On the fundamental structure of Galois switching functions

It is shown that the fundamental structure of Galois switching functions follows naturally from that of Boolean switching functions. An expanded formula for deriving multimomial Galois switching functions is provided with illustrations of its application.

On the fundamental structure of Galois switching functions

In connection with investigations conducted by Menger (1969), Benjauthrit and Reed (1976), and Pradhan (1978) two methods have been reported for deriving a unique Galois switching function from a given truth table description of the function. However, neither of the two methods appears satisfactory. One method often contains many redundant terms in its formulation, whereas the second method requires a great number of multiplications and additions. By some algebraic manipulations, an expanded formula is obtained which combines the best features of both methods. This formula makes it possible to compute the coefficients of the desired function more directly and probably with less effort. The conduction of calculations by means of the new formula is illustrated with the aid of examples.

Development of a nonlinear switching function and its application to static lift characteristics of straight wings

A mathematical modeling technique was developed for the lift characteristics of straight wings throughout a very wide angle of attack range. The technique employs a mathematical switching function that facilitates the representation of the nonlinear aerodynamic characteristics in the partially and fully stalled regions and permits matching empirical data within + or - 4 percent of maximum values. Although specifically developed for use in modeling the lift characteristics, the technique appears to have other applications in both aerodynamic and nonaerodynamic fields.

Reversible function switching of Ag catalyst in Mg/S battery with chloride-containing electrolyte

Rechargeable Mg/S batteries suffer from fast capacity decay because of the difficult re-oxidation of MgS. To tackle this problem, we used Ag catalyst in Mg/S cells with Cl- containing electrolyte, and achieved a greatly improved specific capacity of ~1200 mAh•g -1 and a long cycling life of 100 cycles. To understand the mechanism behind this improvement, we employed in-situ synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction and in-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy tools to study the reversible phase transitions during charge/discharge cycling. Additionally, the in-situ experiment results revealed that, at deeply charged state, Ag reacted with Cl- in the electrolyte to form the AgCl interfacial layer which prevented the physical contact of Ag with elemental S and avoided the formation of Ag 2 S; at early discharged state, AgCl transformed back to metallic Ag, which guaranteed its catalytic effectiveness for MgS decomposition. This reversible function switching mechanism of Ag catalyst is completely different from that in Mg/S cells using other catalysts or electrolytes.

Fuse and switch functions combined within a single housing

Fuswitch provides both switch and fuse functions within a single housing. A mercury capillary is used to alternately vaporize and condense the mercury within a reservoir. The housing is impervious to mercury and the fuse portion of the device operates on the principle of the self-healing mercury fuse.

System providing limit switch function with simultaneous absolute position output

A limit and position sensing system includes a sensor assembly and an emitter. The sensor assembly includes first and second electrical conductors arranged in opposing parallel planes. The first electrical conductor is coiled outwardly from either end thereof in a clockwise fashion to form a first coil region and a second coil region. The second electrical conductor forms a single coil with portions of the single coil's rings lying between the first end and second end of the first electrical conductor being parallel to an axis of the first electrical conductor's plane. Ferromagnetic material is aligned with the first and second electrical conductors and spans beyond (a) the first and second ends of the first electrical conductor, and (b) the portions of the rings of the second electrical conductor's single coil that lie between the first end and second end of the first electrical conductor. The emitter is spaced apart from the sensor assembly and transmits a periodic electromagnetic wave towards the sensor assembly.

Hybrid model for solidification and convection

A hybrid model for continuum phase-change problems is presented. The hybrid model accounts for flow in regions of concentrated mush, dilute mush, and single-phase liquid. Scale analysis shows that, in dilute mush, the Blake-Kozeny-Carman relation may lead to inaccuracy in the continuum formulation for certain values of the Rayleigh and Darcy numbers. The hybrid model uses arctangent switching functions to switch on the Darcy flow and variable viscosity terms depending on the local value of the fraction solid. Two-dimensional example calculations suggest that the hybrid model more accurately accounts for transport in the dilute mush region.

Battery models, systems, and methods using robust fail-safe iteration free approach for solving differential algebraic equations

Battery models using robust fail-safe iteration free approach for solving Differential Algebraic Equations, and associated systems and methods are disclosed. In one embodiment, a method includes generating a model of the rechargeable battery; determining one or more initial conditions for one or more algebraic variables of the model using a solver; holding differential variables of the model static by a switch function while determining the one or more initial conditions; applying the initial conditions to the model by the switch function; and determining one or more parameters for the rechargeable battery by solving the algebraic and differential equations.

Analysis of over-magnetization of elemental transition metal solids from the SCAN density functional

Current investigations have revealed that the strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) meta-generalized gradient approximation exchange-correlation functional significantly over-magnetizes elemental Fe, Co, and Ni solids. For the paradigmatic case, bcc Fe, the error relative to experiment is ≳ 20 % . A comparative analysis of magnetization results from SCAN and its deorbitalized counterpart, SCAN-L, leads to identification of the source of the discrepancy. It is not from the difference between Kohn-Sham (SCAN-L) and generalized Kohn-Sham (SCAN) procedures. The key is the iso-orbital indicator α (the ratio of the local Pauli and Thomas-Fermi kinetic energy densities). Its deorbitalized counterpart α L has more dispersion in both spin channels with respect to magnetization in an approximate region between 0.6 and 1.2 bohrs around an Fe nucleus. The overall effect is that the SCAN switching function evaluated with α L reduces the energetic disadvantage of the down channel with respect to up compared to the original α , which in turn reduces the magnetization. This identifies the origin of the SCAN magnetization error as insensitivity of the SCAN switching function to α values in the approximate range 0.5 ≲ α ≲ 0.8 and oversensitivity for α ≳ 0.8 .

An Analytical Approach to the Design of an Automatic Discontinuous Control System

An analytical investigation was conducted concerning the design of an attitude-stabilization system for stabilizing a vehicle experiencing negligible external moments. The system studied was an automatic discontinuous control system employing a linear switching function including effects of pure time delays, rise and decay time, and neutral zone. Equations were developed which generalize the transient and limit-cycle performance of the control system. understanding of how the physical constants of the system affect its performance, the equations enable the optimization of the system with regard to most considerations that can be expressed mathematically. Design charts are presented which enable rapid calculation of the best thrust level and switching-function coefficient for minimizing power required to stabilize the vehicle within some amplitude, minimizing attitude error, and minimizing angular-velocity error after a period of operation.

Room-temperature structural studies of SARS-CoV-2 protein NendoU with an X-ray free-electron laser

NendoU from SARS-CoV-2 is responsible for the virus’s ability to evade the innate immune system by cleaving the polyuridine leader sequence of antisense viral RNA. Here we report the room-temperature structure of NendoU, solved by serial femtosecond crystallography at an X-ray free-electron laser to 2.6 Å resolution. The room-temperature structure provides insight into the flexibility, dynamics, and other intrinsic properties of NendoU, with indications that the enzyme functions as an allosteric switch. Functional studies examining cleavage specificity in solution and in crystals support the uridine-purine cleavage preference, and we demonstrate that enzyme activity is fully maintained in crystal form. Optimizing the purification of NendoU and identifying suitable crystallization conditions set the benchmark for future time-resolved serial femtosecond crystallography studies. This could advance the design of antivirals with higher efficacy in treating coronaviral infections, since drugs that block allosteric conformational changes are less prone to drug resistance.

Radiation sensitive solid state switch

A mechanically operable solid state switch suited for use in achieving a variable circuit-switching function is described. This switch is characterized by an annular array of photoresponsive switching devices, disposed in communication with an included source of radiation, and a plurality of interchangeable, mechanically operable interrupter disks. Each disk has a predetermined pattern of transparent and opaque portions. Operative displacement of each disk serves to make and break selected electrical circuits through the photo responsive devices of said array.

Information Switching Processor (ISP) contention analysis and control

In designing a satellite system with on-board processing, the selection of a switching architecture is often critical. The on-board switching function can be implemented by circuit switching or packet switching. Destination-directed packet switching has several attractive features, such as self-routing without on-board switch reconfiguration, no switch control memory requirement, efficient bandwidth utilization for packet switched traffic, and accommodation of circuit switched traffic. Destination-directed packet switching, however, has two potential concerns: (1) contention and (2) congestion. And this report specifically deals with the first problem. It includes a description and analysis of various self-routing switch structures, the nature of contention problems, and contention and resolution techniques.
