Fluidic Oscillator Array for Synchronized Oscillating Jet Generation

A fluidic oscillator array includes a plurality of fluidic-oscillator main flow channels. Each main flow channel has an inlet and an outlet. Each main flow channel has first and second control ports disposed at opposing sides thereof, and has a first and a second feedback ports disposed at opposing sides thereof. The feedback ports are located downstream of the control ports with respect to a direction of a fluid flow through the main flow channel. The system also includes a first fluid accumulator in fluid communication with each first control port and each first feedback port, and a second fluid accumulator in fluid communication with each second control port and each second feedback port.

Mars global atmospheric oscillations - Annually synchronized, transient normal-mode oscillations and the triggering of global dust storms

Transient events of an unusual character have been discovered in the daily pressure variations of the Mars atmosphere's pressure at the planetary surface which last only a few Martian days, appear to repeat on an annual basis, cover a large part of the given day's hemisphere, occur in pairs separated by 20-days in some cases, and coincide with the annual pressure minimum. They also consist of spectral components nearly identical in frequency with diurnal and semidiurnal harmonics. It is presently suggested that these events are Kelvin, normal-mode, transient, global oscillations. An almost-diurnal and an almost-semidiurnal high-frequency global oscillation distinct from solar-driven tides may be common on Mars.

Digital phase shifter synchronizes local oscillators

Digital phase-shifting network is used as synchronous frequency multiplier for applications such as phase-locking two signals that may differ in frequency. Circuit has various phase-shift capability. Possible applications include data-communication systems and hybrid digital/analog phase-locked loops.

Synchronizing redundant power oscillators

Outputs of oscillators are synchronized by summing the power transformer phase voltages, the summed voltages are applied to the frequency determining inductors of the individual voltage-controlled power oscillators. The beat frequency is eliminated when synchronization is achieved.

A theoretical and experimental study of the noise behavior of subharmonically injection locked local oscillators

A method for the noise characterization of optically controlled subharmonically injection-locked oscillators is presented. Based on a nonlinear model of synchronized oscillators, this method is used to formulate a general expression for phase noise calculation, so that FM noise degradation of a subharmonically synchronized LO at large-signal levels can be predicted easily and accurately. Experimental results of FM noise measurement of an oscillator confirmed the accuracy of the analysis.

Improved frequency divider employs transistor avalanche effect

New frequency divider circuit can be synchronized over a wider input control frequency range, has greater phase stability, and is less sensitive to temperature changes than conventional synchronized oscillators. The new circuit uses the avalanche breakdown mode of operation of transistors.

Enhancing Soundtracks From Old Movies

Proposed system enhances soundtracks of old movies. Signal on optical soundtrack of film digitized and processed to reduce noise and improve quality; timing signals added, and signal recorded on compact disk. Digital comparator and voltage-controlled oscillator synchronizes speed of film-drive motor and compact disk motor. Frame-coded detector reads binary frame-identifying marks on film. Digital comparator generates error signal if marks on film do not match those on compact disk.

Optical synchronization of millimeter-wave oscillators for distributed architecture

A review of various methods of phase and frequency synchronization of active MMIC based transmit/receive modules is presented, and particular emphasis is placed on the synchronization of oscillators through the use of an indirect subharmonic optical injection locking technique. In this approach, the nonlinear behavior of large-signal modulated laser diodes and solid-state oscillators is exploited to extend the bandwidth of the synchronizing link to the millimeter-wave frequency range. Experimental results of the phase and frequency coherency of two 21.5 GHz FET oscillators are reported. Optimum performance is achieved at a subharmonic factor of 1/4, with a locking range of 84 MHz and a phase noise degradation of only 14 dB. The phase coherency measurement of two injection-locked oscillators points to a phase shift, which is introduced as a result of the frequency detuning between the slave and master oscillator signals. A scheme to correct for this phase error is presented.

High-speed analog fiber optic links for satellite communication

Large-aperture phased array antennas operating at millimeter wave frequencies are designed for space-based communications and imaging. Array elements are comprised of active transmit/receive (T/R) modules which are linked to the central processing unit through a high-speed fiberoptic network. This paper demonstrates optical control of active modules for satellite communication at 24 GHz. An approach called T/R level data mixing, which utilizes fiberoptic transmission of a data signal to individual T/R modules to be upconverted by an optically synchronized local oscillator, is demonstrated at 24 GHz. A free-running HEMT oscillator, used as local oscillator at 24 GHz, is synchronized using indirect subharmonic optical injection locking over a locking range of 14 MHz. Results of data link performance over 500-1000 MHz is also reported in terms of gain-bandwidth, linearity and third-order intercept, sensitivity, and dynamic range.

A two-year history of atomic frequency standards syntonization in the Deep Space Network

The frequency and timing system (FTS) of the Deep Space Network (DSN) consists of a collection of three sets of clocks driven by independent atomic oscillators. The synchronization of the output frequencies (syntonization) of these oscillators (reference frequency standards) is reported. There is an implied specification of a + or - 5.5 X 10 to the 12th power related to the DSN time synchronization specification of a + or - 100 microseconds. Both the syntonization within the three sets and the syntonization of the sets to the international standard (International Atomic Time) are considered.

Neurodynamic oscillators

Oscillation of electrical activity has been found in many nervous systems, from invertebrates to vertebrates including man. There exists experimental evidence of very simple circuits with the capability of oscillation. Neurons with intrinsic oscillation have been found and also neural circuits where oscillation is a property of the network. These two types of oscillations coexist in many instances. It is nowadays hypothesized that behind synchronization and oscillation there is a system of coupled oscillators responsible for activities that range from locomotion and feature binding in vision to control of sleep and circadian rhythms. The huge knowledge that has been acquired on oscillators from the times of Lord Rayleigh has made the simulation of neural oscillators a very active endeavor. This has been enhanced with more recent physiological findings about small neural circuits by means of intracellular and extracellular recordings as well as imaging methods. The future of this interdisciplinary field looks very promising; some researchers are going into quantum mechanics with the idea of trying to provide a quantum description of the brain. In this work we describe some simulations using neuron models by means of which we form simple neural networks that have the capability of oscillation. We analyze the oscillatory activity with root locus method, cross-correlation histograms, and phase planes. In the more complicated neural network models there is the possibility of chaotic oscillatory activity and we study that by means of Lyapunov exponents. The companion paper shows an example of that kind.
