Solid phase sampling device and methods for point-source sampling of polar organic analytes

Sampling devices for sampling an aqueous source (e.g., field testing of ground water) for multiple different analytes are described. Devices include a solid phase extraction component for retention of a wide variety of targeted analytes. Devices include analyte derivatization capability for improved extraction of targeted analytes. Thus, a single device can be utilized to examine a sample source for a wide variety of analytes. Devices also include an isotope dilution capability that can prevent error introduction to the sample analysis and can correct for sample loss and degradation from the point of sampling until analysis as well as correction for incomplete or poor derivatization reactions. The devices can be field-deployable and rechargeable.

Contamination sampling device

A contamination sample collection device has a wooden dowel with a cotton swab at one end, the cotton being covered by a nylon cloth and the wooden dowel being encapsulated by plastic tubing which is heat shrunk onto the dowel and onto a portion of the cotton swab to secure the cotton in place. Another plastic tube is heat shrunk onto the plastic that encapsulates the dowel and a portion of the nylon cloth to secure the nylon cloth in place. The device may thereafter be covered with aluminum foil protector. The device may be used for obtaining samples of contamination in clean room environments.

A Trade Study and Metric for Penetration and Sampling Devices for Possible Use on the NASA 2003 and 2005 Mars Sample Return Missions

This paper reviews the work completed on the compilation of a database containing viable penetrating and sampling devices, the performance system level trade study comparing selected devices to a set of prescribed parameters and the employment of a metric for the evaluation and ranking of the traded penetration and sampling devices, with respect to possible useage on the 03 and 05 sample return missions.

Sampling device

The present invention relates to a device for sampling internal substance(s) in the gastrointestinal tract of an animal composed of at least one wall which is partially expandable. The invention also relates to a method of orally administering the device to an animal and recovering the device from the stool to carry out analysis on the collected sample for diagnosing the health of the gastrointestinal tract and determining nutrient absorption and digestibility.

Fluid sampling device

An inlet leak is described for sampling gases, more specifically, for selectively sampling multiple fluids. This fluid sampling device includes a support frame. A plurality of fluid inlet devices extend through the support frame and each of the fluid inlet devices include a longitudinal aperture. An opening device that is responsive to a control signal selectively opens the aperture to allow fluid passage. A closing device that is responsive to another control signal selectively closes the aperture for terminating further fluid flow.

A Trade Study and Metric for Penetration and Sampling Devices for Possible Use on the NASA 2003 and 2005 Mars Sample Return Missions

The scientific exploration of Mars will require the collection and return of subterranean samples to Earth for examination. This necessitates the use of some type of device or devices that possesses the ability to effectively penetrate the Martian surface, collect suitable samples and return them to the surface in a manner consistent with imposed scientific constraints. The first opportunity for such a device will occur on the 2003 and 2005 Mars Sample Return missions, being performed by NASA. This paper reviews the work completed on the compilation of a database containing viable penetrating and sampling devices, the performance of a system level trade study comparing selected devices to a set of prescribed parameters and the employment of a metric for the evaluation and ranking of the traded penetration and sampling devices, with respect to possible usage on the 03 and 05 sample return missions. The trade study performed is based on a select set of scientific, engineering, programmatic and socio-political criterion. The use of a metric for the various penetration and sampling devices will act to expedite current and future device selection.

An Organic Decontamination Method for Sampling Devices used in Life-detection Studies

Organic decontamination of sampling and storage devices are crucial steps for life-detection, habitability, and ecological investigations of extremophiles living in the most inhospitable niches of Earth, Mars and elsewhere. However, one of the main stumbling blocks for Mars-analogue life-detection studies in terrestrial remote field-sites is the capability to clean instruments and sampling devices to organic levels consistent with null values. Here we present a new seven-step, multi-reagent cleaning and decontamination protocol that was adapted and tested on a glacial ice-coring device and on a rover-guided scoop used for sediment sampling both deployed multiple times during two field seasons of the Arctic Mars Analog Svalbard Expedition AMASE). The effectiveness of the protocols for both devices was tested by (1)in situ metabolic measurements via APT, (2)in situ lipopolysacchride (LPS) quantifications via low-level endotoxin assays, and(3) laboratory-based molecular detection via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Our results show that the combination and step-wise application of disinfectants with oxidative and solvation properties for sterilization are effective at removing cellular remnants and other organic traces to levels necessary for molecular organic- and life-detection studies. The validation of this seven-step protocol - specifically for ice sampling - allows us to proceed with confidence in kmskia4 analogue investigations of icy environments. However, results from a rover scoop test showed that this protocol is also suitable for null-level decontamination of sample acquisition devices. Thus, this protocol may be applicable to a variety of sampling devices and analytical instrumentation used for future astrobiology missions to Enceladus, and Europa, as well as for sample-return missions.

A fast sampling device for the mass spectrometric analysis of liquid rocket engine exhaust

The design of a device to obtain compositional data on rocket exhaust by direct sampling of reactive flow exhausts into a mass spectrometer is presented. Sampling at three stages differing in pressure and orifice angle and diameter is possible. Results of calibration with pure gases and gas mixtures are erratic and of unknown accuracy for H2, limiting the usefulness of the apparatus for determining oxidizer/fuel ratios from combustion product analysis. Deposition effects are discussed, and data obtained from rocket exhaust spectra are analyzed to give O/F ratios and mixture ratio distribution. The O/F ratio determined spectrometrically is insufficiently accurate for quantitative comparison with cold flow data. However, a criterion for operating conditions with improved mixing of fuel and oxidizer which is consistent with cold flow results may be obtained by inspection of contour plots. A chemical inefficiency in the combustion process when oxidizer is in excess is observed from reactive flow measurements. Present results were obtained with N2O4/N2H4 propellants.

Moisture content and gas sampling device

An apparatus is described for measuring minute quantities of moisture and other contaminants within sealed enclosures such as electronic assemblies which may be subject to large external atmospheric pressure variations. An array of vacuum quality valves is arranged to permit cleansing of the test apparatus of residual atmospheric components from a vacuum source. This purging operation evacuates a gas sample bottle, which is then connected by valve settings to provide the drive for withdrawing a gas sample from the sealed enclosure under test into the sample bottle through a colometric detector tube (Drager tube) which indicates moisture content. The sample bottle may be disconnected and its contents (drawn from the test enclosure) separately subjected to mass spectrograph analysis.

Analysis of an effusive sampling device for analysis of boundary layer gases

The effect of suction, through an opening in a surface, upon a stream of flowing gas is determined. The quantity of interest is the maximum distance, Y, from the surface that the main stream is affected by the applied suction. The fraction of this distance Y of the boundary layer thickness sigma is determined as a function of tubing radius and length, gas pressure, temperature and stream velocity. The shape of the flow in the high velocity stream is assumed to be determined by means of a parameter which is an unknown function of the distance from the leading edge of the surface.
