Sr(Ag 1− x Li x ) 2 Se 2 and [Sr 3 Se 2 ][(Ag 1− x Li x ) 2 Se 2 ] Tunable Direct Band Gap Semiconductors

Abstract Synthesizing solids in molten fluxes enables the rapid diffusion of soluble species at temperatures lower than in solid‐state reactions, leading to crystal formation of kinetically stable compounds. In this study, we demonstrate the effectiveness of mixed hydroxide and halide fluxes in synthesizing complex Sr/Ag/Se in mixed LiOH/LiCl. We have accessed a series of two‐dimensional Sr(Ag 1− x Li x ) 2 Se 2 layered phases. With increased LiOH/LiCl ratio or reaction temperature, Li partially substituted Ag to form solid solutions of Sr(Ag 1− x Li x ) 2 Se 2 with x up to 0.45. In addition, a new type of intergrowth compound [Sr 3 Se 2 ][(Ag 1− x Li x ) 2 Se 2 ] was synthesized upon further reaction of Sr(Ag 1− x Li x ) 2 Se 2 with SrSe. Both Sr(Ag 1− x Li x ) 2 Se 2 and [Sr 3 Se 2 ][(Ag 1− x Li x ) 2 Se 2 ] exhibit a direct band gap, which increases with increasing Li substitution ( x ). Therefore, the band gap of Sr(Ag 1− x Li x ) 2 Se 2 can be precisely tuned via fine‐tuning x that is controlled by only the flux ratio and temperature.

Single-crystal growth and superconductivity in RbNi 2 Se 2

Herein we report the synthesis and characterization of RbNi 2 Se 2 , an analog of the iron chalcogenide superconductor Rb x Fe 2 Se 2 , via transport, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. A superconducting transition at T c =1.20 K is identified. In the normal state, RbNi 2 Se 2 shows paramagnetic and Fermi-liquid behaviors. A large Sommerfeld coefficient yields an effective electron mass of m* ≈ 6m e . In the superconducting state, zero-field electronic specific-heat data C es can be described by a two-gap BCS model, indicating that RbNi 2 Se 2 is a possible multigap superconductor. Our density functional theory calculations and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements demonstrate that RbNi 2 Se 2 exhibits relatively weak correlations and multiband characteristics, consistent with the multigap superconductivity.

Fermi surface topology and magnetotransport properties of superconducting Pd 3 Bi 2 Se 2

Pd 3 Bi 2 Se 2 is a rare realization of a superconducting metal with a non-zero topological invariant. Here, in this study, we report the growth of high-quality single crystals of layered Pd 3 Bi 2 Se 2 with a superconducting transition at T c ≈ 0.80 K and upper critical fields of ~10 mT and ~5 mT for the in plane and out-of-plane directions, respectively. Our density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal three pairs of doubly degenerate bands crossing the Fermi level all displaying clear three dimensional dispersion consistent with the overall low electronic anisotropy (<2). The multiband electronic nature of Pd 3 Bi 2 Se 2 is evident in magneto-transport measurements, yielding a sign changing Hall resistivity at low temperatures. The magnetoresistance is non-saturating and follows Kohler’s scaling rule. We interpret the magneto-transport data in terms of open orbits that are revealed in the DFT calculated Fermi surface. de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation measurements using torque magnetometry on single crystals yield four frequencies for out-of-plane fields: F α = (150 ± 26) T, F β = (293 ± 10) T, F γ = (375 ± 20) T and F η = (1017 ± 12) T, with the low frequency dominating the spectrum. Through the measurement of angular dependent dHvA oscillations and DFT calculations we identify the F α frequency with an approximately ellipsoidal electron pocket centered on the L 2 point of the Brillouin zone. Lifshitz-Kosevich analysis of the dHvA oscillations reveals a small cyclotron effective mass m* = (0.11 ± 0.02)m 0 and a nontrivial Berry phase for the dominant orbit. The presence of nontrivial topology in a bulk superconductor positions Pd 3 Bi 2 Se 2 as a potential candidate for exploring topological superconductivity.

The Crystal Structure of BaZn 2 Se 2 (OH) 2 Featuring Brownmillerite‐Type Layers

Abstract A bimetallic hydroxychalcogenide, BaZn 2 Se 2 (OH) 2 , was synthesized through hydrothermal pouch methods. The single crystal X‐ray diffraction and electron diffraction indicates that the phase crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma and is composed of anionic layers [ZnSe 3/3 (OH) 1/1 ] − that are separated and charged balanced by Ba 2+ cations. The [ZnSe 3/3 (OH) 1/1 ] – layer comprises two unique Zn sites, which form interpenetrating zigzag chains with an in‐plane dipole moment and adopts a brownmillerite‐type structural motif. The adjacent layers contain tetrahedrally coordinated Zn chains of opposite handedness related by an inversion center, which cancel the microscopic dipoles to minimize the macroscopic electric polarization. The adoption of a brownmillerite structural motif in BaZn 2 Se 2 (OH) 2 can be rationalized by the distinct charge difference between Se 2− and OH − anions, which creates a sufficient dipole moment in the ZnSe 3 (OH) tetrahedra to allow the occurrence of twisted chains. FTIR spectroscopy confirms the existence of OH − anions and DFT calculations indicate that BaZn 2 Se 2 (OH) 2 is a semiconductor with a direct band gap. This work expands the chemistry of the brownmillerite family from traditional homoanionic oxides to multianion hydroxychalcogenides, offering a new opportunity to explore tunable structural complexity for better design of functional materials.

Flat-band-induced itinerant ferromagnetism in RbCo 2 Se 2

ACo 2 Se 2 (A=K,Rb,Cs) is a homologue of the iron-based superconductor, AFe 2 Se 2 . From a comprehensive study of RbCo 2 Se 2 via measurements of magnetization, transport, neutron diffraction, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and first-principle calculations, we identify a ferromagnetic order accompanied by an orbital-dependent spin-splitting of the electronic dispersions. However, we identify the ordered moment to be dominated by a d x 2 –y 2 flatband near the Fermi level, which exhibits the largest spin splitting across the ferromagnetic transition, suggesting an itinerant origin of the ferromagnetism. In the broader context of the iron-based superconductors, we find this d x 2 –y 2 flatband to be a common feature in the band structures of both iron chalcogenides and iron pnictides, accessible via heavy electron doping.

Dynamical Bond Formation in KNi 2 Se 2

Emphanisis, or the appearance out of nothing, has been used to describe the phenomena of spontaneous atom off-centering and dipole formation at elevated temperatures in lead chalcogenides. Here, we provide spectroscopic evidence of spontaneous formation of metal-metal bonds above T~50 K in the layered metal KNi 2 Se 2 . These bonds form zig-zag chains that lower the local symmetry from tetragonal to monoclinic. Energy-resolved pair distribution function measurements exclude a pure phonon origin of our observations, and instead imply the existence of extra, slowly fluctuating, Ni-Ni bonds above T=50 K. Density functional theory calculations support this lower symmetry configuration as an instability of tetragonal KNi 2 Se 2 . We thus demonstrate that the phenomena of emphansis is not limited to local electric dipole formation, but can also be driven by the formation of metal-metal bonds.

La 2 ⁢O 3 ⁢Mn 2 ⁢Se 2 : A correlated insulating layered d-wave altermagnet

Altermagnets represent a new class of magnetic phases without net magnetization, invariant under a combination of rotation and time reversal. Unlike conventional collinear antiferromagnets (AFM), altermagnets could lead to new correlated states and important material properties deriving from their nonrelativistic spin-split band structure. Indeed, they serve as the magnetic analogue of unconventional superconductors and can yield spin-polarized electrical currents in the absence of external magnetic fields, making them promising candidates for next-generation spintronics. Here, we report altermagnetism in the correlated insulator, magnetically ordered tetragonal oxychalcogenide, L⁢a 2 ⁢O 3⁢ M⁢n 2 ⁢S⁢e 2 . Symmetry analysis reveals a 𝑑 𝑥 2 −𝑦 2 -wave-like spin-momentum locking arising from the M⁢n 2 ⁢O Lieb lattice, supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Magnetic measurements confirm the AFM transition below ∼166K while neutron pair distribution function analysis reveals a 2D short-range magnetic order that persists above the Néel temperature. Single crystals are grown and characterized using x-ray diffraction, optical and electron microscopy, and micro-Raman spectroscopy to confirm the crystal structure, stoichiometry, and uniformity. Furthermore, our findings establish L⁢a 2⁢ O 3 ⁢M⁢n 2⁢ S⁢e 2 as a model altermagnetic system realized on a Lieb lattice.

In Situ Visualization of Local Distortions in the High- T c Molecule-Intercalated Li x (C 5 H 5 N) y Fe 2– z Se 2 Superconductor

A time-resolved synchrotron X-ray total scattering study sheds light on the evolution of the different structural length scales involved during the intercalation of the layered iron–selenide host by organic molecular donors, aiming at the formation of the expanded-lattice Li x (C 5 H 5 N) y Fe 2– z Se 2 hybrid superconductor. The intercalates are found to crystallize in the tetragonal ThCr 2 Si 2 -type structure at the average level, however, with an enhanced interlayer iron–selenide spacing ( d = 16.2 Å) that accommodates the heterocyclic molecular spacers. Quantitative atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis at variable times suggests distorted FeSe 4 tetrahedral local environments that appear swollen with respect to those in the parent β-FeSe. Simultaneously acquired in situ synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data disclose that secondary phases (α-Fe and Li 2 Se) grow significantly when a higher lithium concentration is used in the solvothermal reaction or when the solution is aged. These observations are in line with the strongly reducing character of the intercalation medium’s solvated electrons that mediate the defect chemistry of the expanded-lattice superconductor. In the latter, intralayer correlated local distortions indicate electron-donating aspects that reflect in somewhat enlarged Fe–Se bonds. Additionally, they also reveal a degree of relief of chemical pressure associated with a large distance between Fe and Se sheets (“taller” anion height) and a stretched Fe–Fe square planar topology. The elongation of the latter, derived from the in situ PDF study, speaks for a plausible increase in the Fe-site vacancy concentration. The evolution of the local structural parameters suggests an optimum reaction window where kinetically stabilized phases resemble the distortions of the edge-sharing Fe–Se tetrahedra, required for a high- T c in expanded-lattice iron-chalcogenides.

Native Defects Hybridization and Electronic Transport in Cu 2 Se–CuGaSe 2 Hierarchical Composites

Engineering the energy distribution of electronic defects in semiconductors can afford the coexistence of degenerate and nondegenerate transport behavior. By leveraging native defects in Cu 2 Se and CuGaSe 2 phases, the tunability of the concentration and energy distribution of active electronic defects in hierarchical (1-x)Cu 2 Se-(x)CuGaSe 2 composites is demonstrated. This study found that the electrical conductivity of various composites decreases with rising temperature indicating degenerate semiconducting behavior, whereas the carrier density increases with temperature, which is consistent with non-degenerate semiconductivity. Remarkably, this study found that while the carrier density and electrical conductivity drop with the increasing CuGaSe 2 content for samples with x ≤ 0.45 is consistent with an increase in the activation energy of “active” electronic defects, the sudden increase by 140% in the electrical conductivity and by 109% in the carrier density for near equimolar composition suggests the formation of a large density of electronic defects with lower activation energy. This unusual behavior is understood within the context of the hybridization of coexisting native electronic defects to form degenerate hybrid acceptor states with lower activation energy. The reported unique electronic transport can be leveraged for the development of more versatile electronic and optoelectronic devices with superior performance.

Axion insulator state in ferromagnetically ordered CrI 3 /Bi 2 Se 3 /MnBi 2 Se 4 heterostructures

Ferromagnetic (FM) axion insulators may greatly simplify experimental explorations of the topological magnetoelectric effect, as the FM ordering can be stable in a broad range of magnetic field. Through density functional theory calculations and four-band model studies, we find that two-dimensional van der Waals FM CrI 3 and MnBi 2 Se 4 overlayers induce opposite-sign exchange fields in the topological surface states of Bi 2 Se 3 film when they are ferromagnetically ordered. As a consequence, the CrI 3 /Bi 2 Se 3 /MnBi 2 Se 4 heterostructure is a robust FM axion insulator, according to surface-resolved Berry curvature calculations. Our work opens up opportunities for the design of materials with the topological magnetoelectric effect.

Li x (C 5 H 5 N) y Fe 2– z Se 2 : A Defect-Resilient Expanded-Lattice High-Temperature Superconductor

Two-dimensional iron chalcogenide intercalates display a remarkable correlation of the interlayer spacing with enhancement of the superconducting critical temperature (T c ). In this work, synchrotron X-ray absorption (XAS; at the Fe and Se K-edges) and emission (XES; at the Fe Κβ) spectroscopies allow one to discuss how the important rise of T c (~44 K) in the molecule-intercalated Li x (C 5 H 5 N) y Fe 2-z Se 2 relates to the electronic and local structural changes felt by the inorganic host upon doping (x). XES shows that widely separated layers of edge-sharing FeSe 4 tetrahedra carry low-spin moieties, with a local Fe magnetic moment slightly reduced compared to the parent β-Fe 2-z Se 2 . Pre-edge XAS expresses the progressively reduced mixing of metal 3d-4p states upon lithiation. Doping-mediated local lattice modifications, probed by conventional T c optimization measures (cf. the anion height and FeSe 4 tetrahedra regularity), become less relevant when layers are spaced far away. On the basis of extended X-ray absorption fine structure, such distortions are compensated by a softer Fe network that relates to Fe-site vacancies, alleviating electron-lattice correlations and superconductivity. Density functional theory (DFT) guided modification of the isolated Fe 2-z Se 2 (z, vacant sites) planes, resembling the host layers, identify that Fe-site deficiency occurs at low energy cost, giving rise to stretched Fe sheets, in accordance with experiments. Here, the robust high-T c in Li x (C 5 H 5 N) y Fe 2-z Se 2 , arises from the interplay of electron-donating spacers and the iron selenide layer's tolerance to defect chemistry, a tool to favorably tune its Fermi surface properties.

Electronic and structural properties of RbCe X 2 ( X 2 : O 2 , S 2 , SeS, Se 2 , TeSe, Te 2 )

We report triangular lattice delafossite compounds built from magnetic lanthanide ions are a topic of recent interest due to their frustrated magnetism and realization of quantum disordered magnetic ground states. Here we report the evolution of the structure and electronic ground states of RbCeX 2 compounds, built from a triangular lattice of Ce 3+ ions, upon varying their anion character (X 2 =O 2 , S 2 , SeS, Se 2 , TeSe, Te 2 ). This includes the discovery of a new member of this series, RbCeO 2 , that potentially realizes a quantum disordered ground state analogous to NaYbO 2 . Magnetization and susceptibility measurements reveal that all compounds manifest mean-field antiferromagnetic interactions and, with the exception of the oxide, possess signatures of magnetic correlations onset below 1 K. The crystalline electric field level scheme is explored via neutron scattering and ab initio calculations in order to model the intramultiplet splitting of the J=5/2 multiplet. In addition to the two excited doublets expected within the J=5/2 manifold, we observe one extra local mode present across the sample series. This added mode shifts downward in energy with increasing anion mass and decreasing crystal field strength, suggesting a long-lived anomalous mode endemic to anion motion about the Ce3 + sites.

Unusual electronic transport in (1 - x )Cu 2 Se-( x )CuInSe 2 hierarchical composites

The ability to control the relative density of electronic point defects as well as their energy distribution in semiconductors could afford a systematic modulation of their electronic, optical, and optoelectronic properties. Using a model binary hybrid system Cu 2 Se–CuInSe 2 , we have investigated the correlation between phase composition, microstructure, and electronic transport behavior in the synthesized composites. We found that both Cu 2 Se and CuInSe 2 phases coexist at multiple length scales, ranging from sub-ten nanometer to several micrometers, leading to the formation of a hybrid hierarchical microstructure. Astonishingly, the electronic phase diagram of the (1 - x)Cu 2 Se–(x)CuInSe 2 (15% ≤ x ≤ 100%) hierarchical composites remarkably deviates from the trend normally expected for composites between a heavily doped semiconductor (Cu 2 Se) and a poorly conducting phase (CuInSe 2 ). A sudden 3-fold increase in the electrical conductivity and carrier concentration along with a marginal increase in the carrier mobility is observed for composites at the vicinity of equimolar composition (48% ≤ x ≤ 52%). The carrier concentration increases from ~1.5 × 10 20 cm -3 for the composites with x ≤ 45% to 5.0 × 10 20 cm -3 for x = 50%, and remains constant at 4.5 × 10 20 cm -3 with x value in the range of 52% < x ≤ 90%, then quickly drops to 8 × 10 18 cm -3 for pristine CuInSe 2 phase (x = 100%). The atypical electronic behavior was rationalized in the light of the formation of an inter-band (IB) within the band gap, which arises from the hybridization of native electronic point defects from both Cu 2 Se and CuInSe 2 phases in the resulting hierarchical composites. The result points to a new strategy to modulate the electronic structure of semiconductor composites to maximize interaction and coupling between two fundamentally contrasting properties enabling access to electronic hybrid systems with potential applications as interactive and stimuli-responsive multifunctional materials.

Surface Conversion of Single-Crystal Bi 2 Se 3 to β-In 2 Se 3

In this work, we demonstrate that the surface layers of single-crystal layered-2D Bi 2 Se 3 can be converted to layered-2D rhombohedral ß-In 2 Se 3 by annealing under a trimethylindium (TMIn) flux. Samples were prepared in a metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) chamber, then transferred under vacuum to a surface analysis chamber for analysis with low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and Auger electron spectroscopy. Additional ex situ characterization included x-ray diffraction, transmission-electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) elemental mapping, and Raman spectroscopy. The resulting single-crystal ß-In 2 Se 3 adopts the rhombohedral crystal structure (space group R-3m) and orientation of the underlying Bi 2 Se 3 , and the excess Bi atoms generated by this process create an underlying region of Bi-rich Bi x Se y . Due to the difference in bandgap between Bi 2 Se 3 and In 2 Se 3 , this conversion reaction presents a pathway to lateral heterojunctions if only selected regions are converted by masking the surface to spatially define the TMIn exposure. The conversion may also have implications for heteroepitaxy, because the in-plane lattice constants of Bi 2 Se 3 and In 2 Se 3 (0001) surfaces match those of InP and GaAs (111), respectively, and the natural cleavage planes of a layered-2D crystal facilitate substrate removal and reuse.

Atomic-Scale Insights into the Lateral and Vertical Epitaxial Growth in Two-Dimensional Pd 2 Se 3 –MoS 2 Heterostructures

Two-dimensional (2D) materials form heterostructures in both the lateral and vertical directions when two different materials are interfaced, but with totally different bonding mechanisms of covalent in-plane to van der Waal’s layered interactions. Understanding how the competition between lateral and vertical forces influences the epitaxial growth is important for future materials development of complex mixed layered heterostructures. In this study, we use atomic-resolution annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy to study the detailed atomic arrangements at mixed 2D heterostructure interfaces composed of two semiconductors with distinctly different crystal symmetry and elemental composition, Pd 2 Se 3 :MoS 2 , in order to understand the role of different chemical bonds on the resultant epitaxy. Pd 2 Se 3 is grown off the step edge in bilayer MoS 2 , and the vertical and lateral epitaxial relationships of the Pd 2 Se 3 –MoS 2 heterostructures are investigated. We find that the similarity of geometry at the interface with one metal (Pd or Mo) atoms bonded with two chalcogens (S or Se) are the crucial factors to make the atomically stitched lateral junction of 2D heterostructures. In addition, the vertical van der Waal interactions that are normally dominant in layered materials can be overcome by in-plane forces if the interfacial atomic stitching is high in quality and low in defect density. This knowledge should help guide the approaches for improving the epitaxy in mixed 2D heterostructures and seamless stitching of in-plane 2D heterostructures with various complex monolayer structures.

The highly exothermic hydrogen abstraction reaction H 2 Te + OH → H 2 O + TeH: comparison with analogous reactions for H 2 Se and H 2 S

The “gold standard” CCSD(T) method is adopted along with the correlation consistent basis sets up to aug-cc-pV5Z-PP to study the mechanism of the hydrogen abstraction reaction H 2 Te + OH. Here, the predicted geometries and vibrational frequencies for reactants and products are in good agreement with the available experimental results. With the ZPVE corrections, the transition state in the favorable pathway of this reaction energetically lies 1.2 kcal mol -1 below the reactants, which is lower than the analogous relative energies for the H 2 Se + OH reaction (-0.7 kcal mol -1 ), the H 2 S + OH reaction (+0.8 kcal mol -1 ) and the H 2 O + OH reaction (+9.0 kcal mol -1 ). Accordingly, the exothermic reaction energies for these related reactions are predicted to be 47.8 (H 2 Te), 37.7 (H 2 Se), 27.1 (H 2 S), and 0.0 (H 2 O) kcal mol -1 , respectively. Geometrically, the low-lying reactant complexes for H 2 Te + OH and H 2 Se + OH are two-center three-electron hemibonded structures, whereas those for H 2 S + OH and H 2 O + OH are hydrogen-bonded. With ZPVE and spin–orbit coupling corrections, the relative energies for the reactant complex, transition state, product complex, and the products for the H 2 Te + OH reaction are estimated to be -13.1, -1.0, -52.0, and -52.6 kcal mol -1 , respectively. Finally, twenty-eight DFT functionals have been tested systematically to assess their ability in describing the potential energy surface of the H 2 Te + OH reaction. The best of these functionals for the corresponding energetics are -9.9, -1.4, -46.4, and -45.4 kcal mol -1 (MPWB1K), or -13.1, -2.4, -57.1, and -54.6 kcal mol -1 (M06-2X), respectively.
