Evaluation of HVAC & refrigeration system fault behaviors and impacts: A systematic review

Achieving the goals of green buildings critically depends on the fault-free operation of heating, ventilation and air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC&R) systems. However, faults frequently occur in these systems, causing a range of negative consequences, including increased energy consumption, diminished operational performance, compromised indoor environmental quality, higher operational costs, and shortened system lifespan. The evaluation of fault behaviors and impacts plays a critical role in revealing fault characteristics and consequently supports many research areas, including the design of the high-performance equipment, development of fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) and robust control approaches, as well as the enhancement of maintenance decision-making activities. This paper systematically reviews 112 research publications that reported the analysis and evaluation of fault behaviors and impacts in HVAC&R systems over the past thirty years. Here, we designed a review approach to address five crucial research questions, namely: 1) the objectives of analysis and evaluation of fault behaviors and impacts, 2) data sources, 3) equipment/system types and fault types, 4) evaluation methods including evaluation measures and associated metrics, and 5) challenges and future directions in the research on evaluating of fault behaviors and impacts. In-depth discussions on these questions help bridge the gap between the evaluation of fault behaviors and impacts and their practical applications, such as the development of high-performance systems, fault models, FDD methods, and maintenance decision-making tools within the HVAC&R FDD domain.

Toward Large-Area Sub-Arcsecond X-Ray Telescopes II

In order to advance significantly scientific objectives, future x-ray astronomy missions will likely call for x-ray telescopes with large aperture areas (approx. = 3 sq m) and fine angular resolution (approx. = 1"). Achieving such performance is programmatically and technologically challenging due to the mass and envelope constraints of space-borne telescopes and to the need for densely nested grazing-incidence optics. Such an x-ray telescope will require precision fabrication, alignment, mounting, and assembly of large areas (approx. = 600 sq m) of lightweight (approx. = 2 kg/sq m areal density) high-quality mirrors, at an acceptable cost (approx. = 1 M$/sq m of mirror surface area). This paper reviews relevant programmatic and technological issues, as well as possible approaches for addressing these issues-including direct fabrication of monocrystalline silicon mirrors, active (in-space adjustable) figure correction of replicated mirrors, static post-fabrication correction using ion implantation, differential erosion or deposition, and coating-stress manipulation of thin substrates.

Spin structure and dynamics of the topological semimetal Co 3 Sn 2-x In x S 2

The anomalous Hall effect (AHE), typically observed in ferromagnetic (FM) metals with broken time-reversal symmetry, depends on electronic and magnetic properties. In Co 3 Sn 2-x In x S 2 , a giant AHE has been attributed to Berry curvature associated with the FM Weyl semimetal phase, yet recent studies report complicated magnetism. We use neutron scattering to determine the spin dynamics and structures as a function of x and provide a microscopic understanding of the AHE and magnetism interplay. Spin gap and stiffness indicate a contribution from Weyl fermions consistent with the AHE. The magnetic structure evolves from c-axis ferromagnetism at x = 0 to a canted antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure with reduced c-axis moment and in-plane AFM order at x = 0.12 and further reduced c-axis FM moment at x = 0.3. Since noncollinear spins can induce non-zero Berry curvature in real space acting as a fictitious magnetic field, our results revealed another AHE contribution, establishing the impact of magnetism on transport.

Hybrid polymer network cathode-enabled soluble-polysulfide-free lithium–sulfur batteries

Among the emerging 'beyond lithium-ion' technologies for maximized sustainability, lithium-sulfur (Li-S) is a favoured chemistry because of its exceptional energy density from the conversion of sulfur, an element in abundant supply. However, the dissolution of several intermediate polysulfides formed during conversion leads to rapid performance degradation over cycling. Here, in this study, we address this issue by sulfurizing a hybrid polymer network with polyphosphazene and carbon as a cathode for Li-S batteries. With rich sites to re-bond and adsorb dissociative sulfur species, this hybrid polymer network circumvents the formation of soluble polysulfides and enables a unique, reversible inserting conversion reaction. Thus, our cathode delivers both high capacity (~900 mAh g -1 cathode ) and excellent cycling stability in Li-S coin cells, with a pouch cell demonstration of projected energy density of ~300 Wh kg -1 and 84.9% capacity retention after 150 cycles. The strategy can be extended to other cost-effective, recyclable polymers, advancing sulfur-based batteries towards practical energy storage application.

Online Detection of Low-Quality Synchrophasor Data Considering Frequency Similarity

Here, this letter proposes a new approach for online detection of low-quality synchrophasor data under both normal and event conditions. The proposed approach utilizes the features of synchrophasor data in time and frequency domains to distinguish multiple regional PMU signals and detect low-quality synchrophasor data. It is more effective to detect low-quality data with apparently indistinguishable profiles. Case studies from recorded synchrophasor measurements verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach for detecting low-quality synchrophasor data in frequency, voltage magnitude and voltage angle.
