Deep glassy state dynamic data challenge glass models: Elastic models

The idea of an “ideal” glass transition temperature has persisted at least since the work from Kauzmann when it was observed that the entropy of glass-forming liquids extrapolated to below that of the crystal, thus suggesting the need for a phase transition at a finite or non-zero absolute temperature. This thermodynamic paradox was also found to be related to the observations of a diverging of the extrapolated viscosity or relaxation times at a temperature near to this ideal glass transition. Recently, however, we have carried out experiments using both an ancient amber material and an ultra-stable amorphous fluoropolymer that challenge the ideas of the divergence of the viscosity or relaxation times at this ideal glass transition. In the present manuscript we have evaluated two theories of the glass transition that are based on ideas related to elasticity of the amorphous glass-forming material. We find that the models from both J. Dyre and his group and of K.S. Schweizer and his group not only show non-diverging behavior but are also in some agreement with the new data, though still showing somewhat slower dynamics than those observed in the experiments. The work shows that the data are good enough to distinguish between theories and it is suggested that other mechanisms may be needed to fully describe the non-diverging responses of the ultra-stable glasses.

Long- and short-range correlations and their event-scale dependence in high-multiplicity pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

Two-particle angular correlations are measured in high-multiplicity proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV by the ALICE Collaboration. The yields of particle pairs at short-(Δη ~ 0) and long-range (1.6 < |Δη| < 1.8) in pseudorapidity are extracted on the near-side (Δ~ 0). They are reported as a function of transverse momentum (p T ) in the range 1 < p T < 4 GeV/c. Furthermore, the event-scale dependence is studied for the first time by requiring the presence of high-p T leading particles or jets for varying p T thresholds. The results demonstrate that the long-range “ridge” yield, possibly related to the collective behavior of the system, is present in events with high-p T processes as well. The magnitudes of the short- and long-range yields are found to grow with the event scale. The results are compared to EPOS LHC and PYTHIA 8 calculations, with and without string-shoving interactions. It is found that while both models describe the qualitative trends in the data, calculations from EPOS LHC show a better quantitative agreement for the p T dependency, while overestimating the event-scale dependency.

Multiplicity-dependent production of Σ(1385) ± and Ξ(1530) 0 in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The production yields of the Σ(1385) ± and Ξ(1530) 0 resonances are measured in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with ALICE. The measurements are performed as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity $\langle$dN ch /dη$\rangle$, which is related to the energy density produced in the collision. The results include transverse momentum (p T ) distributions, p T - integrated yields, mean transverse momenta of Σ(1385) ± and Ξ(1530) 0 , as well as ratios of the p T - integrated resonance yields relative to yields of other hadron species. The Σ(1385) ± /π ± and Ξ(1530) 0 /π ± yield ratios are consistent with the trend of the enhancement of strangeness production from low to high multiplicity pp collisions, which was previously observed for strange and multi-strange baryons. The yield ratio between the measured resonances and the long-lived baryons with the same strangeness content exhibits a hint of a mild increasing trend at low multiplicity, despite too large uncertainties to exclude the flat behaviour. The results are compared with predictions from models such as EPOS-LHC and PYTHIA 8 with Rope shoving. The latter provides the best description of the multiplicity dependence of the Σ(1385) ± and Ξ(1530) 0 production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV.

Mixed-species charge and baryon balance functions studies with PYTHIA

Mixed species charge and baryon balance functions are computed based on proton-proton ( p p ) collisions simulated with the PYTHIA8 model. Simulations are performed with selected values of the collision energy s and the Monash tune and the ropes and shoving modes of PYTHIA8 to explore whether such measurements provide useful new information and constraints on mechanisms of particle production in p p collisions. Charge balance functions are studied based on mixed pairs of pions, kaons, and protons, whereas baryon balance functions are computed for mixed low mass strange and nonstrange baryons. Both charge and baryon balance functions of mixed particle pairs feature shapes and amplitudes that sensitively depend on the particle considered owing largely to the particle production mechanisms implemented in PYTHIA. The evolution of balance functions integrals with the longitudinal width of the acceptance are presented and one finds that sums of such integrals for a given reference particle obey expected sum rules for both charge and baryon balance functions. Additionally, both types of balance functions are found to evolve in shape and amplitude with increasing collision energy s and the PYTHIA tunes considered.
