Thermal properties of field-assisted-sintered SiCN–Y 2 O 3 composites

Polymer-derived amorphous SiCN has excellent high-temperature stability and properties. To reduce the shrinkage during pyrolysis and to improve the high-temperature oxidation resistance, Y 2 O 3 was added as a filler. In this study, polymer-derived SiCN–Y 2 O 3 composites were fabricated by mixing a polymeric precursor of SiCN with Y 2 O 3 submicron powders in different ratios. The mixtures were cross-linked and pyrolyzed in argon. SiCN–Y 2 O 3 composites were processed using field-assisted sintering technology at 1350°C for 5 min under vacuum. Dense SiCN–Y 2 O 3 composite pellets were successfully made with relative density higher than 98% and homogeneous microstructure. Due to low temperature and short time of the heat-treatment, the grain growth of Y 2 O 3 was substantially inhibited. The Y 2 O 3 grain size was ~1 μm after sintering. The composites’ heat capacity, thermal diffusivity, and thermal expansion coefficients were characterized as a function of temperature. The thermal conductivity of the composites ceramics decreased as the amount of amorphous SiCN increased and the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the composites increased with Y 2 O 3 content. However, the thermal conductivity and CTE did not follow the rule of mixture. This is likely due to the partial oxidation of SiCN and the resultant impurity phases such as Y 2 SiO 5 , Y 2 Si 2 O 7 , and Y 4.67 (SiO 4 ) 3 O.

Penta-SiCN: A Highly Auxetic Monolayer

We report the negative Poisson’s (NPR) ratio in a two-dimensional (2D) material is a counterintuitive mechanical property that facilitates the development of nanoscale devices with sophisticated functionality. Inspired by the peculiar buckled lower-symmetric, trilayered geometry of pentagonal monolayers, we theoretically predict penta-SiCN, a ternary auxetic metallic monolayer with highly tunable NPR. The penta-SiCN is structurally, thermally, dynamically, and mechanically stable, and sustainable at and beyond room temperature with experimental feasibility. It possesses nontrivial geometrical and mechanical isotropy and relatively moderate thickness. Remarkably, the shorter and quasi sp3-hybridized C–N bond and the rigidity against the strain allow the monolayer to possess a high value of NPR (-0.136), even higher than that of black phosphorene, extendable up to -0.639 by 4% of biaxial stretching. On the other hand, the 2D Young’s modulus of 129.88 N/m decreases to 41.34 N/m at equivalent stretching, indicating relative softening and flexibility. Interestingly, a buckled-to-planar phase transition is identified at 10% biaxial strain before it suffers the fracture at 16%. Additionally, the strong optical anisotropy, absorbance (up to 6.51 x 105 cm -1 ), and presence of plasmon frequency demonstrate its potential application in optomechanical and plasmonics.

Materials Data on SiCN by Materials Project

SiCN is half-Heusler structured and crystallizes in the cubic F-43m space group. The structure is three-dimensional. Si4+ is bonded in a body-centered cubic geometry to four equivalent C2- and four equivalent N2- atoms. All Si–C bond lengths are 2.06 Å. All Si–N bond lengths are 2.06 Å. C2- is bonded to four equivalent Si4+ atoms to form CSi4 tetrahedra that share corners with four equivalent NSi4 tetrahedra, corners with twelve equivalent CSi4 tetrahedra, and edges with six equivalent NSi4 tetrahedra. N2- is bonded to four equivalent Si4+ atoms to form NSi4 tetrahedra that share corners with four equivalent CSi4 tetrahedra, corners with twelve equivalent NSi4 tetrahedra, and edges with six equivalent CSi4 tetrahedra.

Processing and 3D printing of SiCN polymer-derived ceramics

Preceramic polymer resins are attractive for the 3D printing of net-shaped ceramic components. Recently various processes have been demonstrated for 3D printing of polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs). Ultimately in these processes, the process outcomes strongly depend on the process parameters. In particular, for PDCs the ceramic density, and ceramic yield are affected by the catalyst concentration and cross-linking duration. Here, we use thermal analysis and FTIR to quantify the interrelation of the process parameters on the process outcome for polysilazanes and demonstrate 3D printing of PDC components based on the best-identified process parameters. Furthermore, the results of this work can be used as guidelines for future additive manufacturing of PDCs.

Nonthermal plasma synthesis of silicon carbonitride

Abstract The use of a low‐temperature plasma for the synthesis of amorphous silicon carbonitride (SiCN) nanoparticles enables the realization of sintered bulk samples with high thermal stability. Amorphous SiCN nanoparticles are produced from a mixture of silane, methane, and ammonia utilizing a mid‐pressure, radio‐frequency, continuous flow reactor. Particle characterization shows that the nanoparticles are largely amorphous with some crystalline silicon and silicon carbide domains <10 nm in size. Compositional tuning, controlled by varying the precursor flow rates, coupled with the uniform mixing of elements at the nanoscale, results in samples that resist crystallization even when sintered at temperatures as high as 2000°C. This study suggests that the low‐temperature plasma synthesis of nanoparticles has great potential to produce bulk structural materials for application in harsh environments.
