Siberian Snakes, Figure-8 and Spin Transparency Techniques for High Precision Experiments with Polarized Hadron Beams in Colliders

We present a review of the possibilities to conduct experiments of high efficiency in the nuclear and high energy physics with spin-polarized beams in a collider complex, configuration of which includes Siberian snakes or figure-8 collider ring. Special attention is given to the recently elicited advantageous possibility to conduct high precision experiments in a regime of the spin transparency (ST) when the design global spin tune is close to zero. In this regime, the polarization control is realized by use of spin navigators (SN), which are compact special insertions of magnets dedicated to a high flexibility spin manipulation including frequent spin flips.

Polarization preservation of polarized deuteron beams in the electron ion collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory

The physics program at the future electron ion collider (EIC) calls for polarized neutron beams at high energies. The best neutron carriers are 3 He nuclei and deuterons. Both neutron carriers are expected to be utilized by the spin physics program in the EIC. Owing to the small magnetic moment anomaly of a deuteron particle, significantly higher magnetic fields are required for spin rotation, so that full Siberian snakes are not feasible. However, the resonance strengths are weak, and the number of resonances is small. It is possible to deal with individual resonances using conventional methods such as a betatron tune jump and vertical ac dipole for intrinsic depolarizing resonances, and a weak partial snake for imperfection resonances. This study employed a realistic magnet ramp rate and parameters (both transverse and longitudinal emittances, as well as realistic lattices) to show that it is possible to accelerate polarized deuterons beyond 100 GeV/n. This paper summarizes the details of the feasibility of a polarized deuteron beam for the future EIC at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Numerical simulation of RHIC polarized proton run 17 spin flipper experiments

RHIC nine-magnet spin flipper has been operated successfully during RHIC polarized proton Run 17, with 97% spin flip efficiency achieved. The results show the importance of mirror resonance removal, small spin tune spread, and proper spin flipper driving tune sweep speed. Detailed spin tracking simulations, based on a Lorentz force and Thomas-BMT differential equation numerical solver code for accuracy, have been carried out to understand the experimental results. Agreement within measurement accuracy is obtained at injection energy, 23.8 GeV. It is not as tight at 255 GeV, reasons for that are exposed. These measurements and numerical studies allow to determine the sensitivity of spin-flip efficiency to the dispersion slopes at the two Siberian snakes and to the ac dipole frequency sweep speed. They also provide guidance for future developments at BNL’s electron-ion collider. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Polarization transmission in the Hadron Storage Ring of the Electron-Ion Collider

The successful operation of the future Electron-Ion Collider is contingent on maintaining high hadron beam polarization up to 275 GeV. The Hadron Storage Ring lattice, however, features a symmetry-breaking interaction region that excites strong, nonsystematic spin resonances, posing a significant threat to polarization preservation. This paper systematically investigates two complementary strategies to ensure high polarization transmission. The first method involves optimizing the vertical betatron phase advance between Siberian snakes to orchestrate a cancellation of depolarizing kicks across the ring. We demonstrate through simulations that both dynamic and fixed-optics solutions based on this principle can successfully preserve polarization through the strongest resonances. The second, more powerful approach involves optimizing the snake rotation axes to suppress resonance driving terms at their source. We revisit established symmetric configurations, such as the Lee-Courant schemes, and introduce a novel, highly symmetric “Doubly Lee-Courant” (DLC) scheme, which enforces a local 𝜋 spin phase advance across every consecutive pair of snakes. Our analysis reveals a clear performance hierarchy, with the DLC configuration providing an exceptionally robust and energy-insensitive baseline for polarization preservation. We conclude that a hybrid strategy, using a DLC snake scheme as a symmetric foundation and betatron phase tuning for fine corrections, offers the most effective path forward for the EIC and future high-energy polarized-beam facilities.

Design of a removable vacuum bellow restraint for RHIC vacuum vessels

In preparation for the rework of a RHIC Siberian snake for EIC, a DU7 cold section is being refurbished to replace the snake magnet before the RHIC run 25. There is a need to check the vacuum vessel leak tightness before tunnel installation, however the vacuum vessel original restraints have been removed. So there is a need to design a new removable bellow restraint for this vacuum testing. This report details the design and analysis done to ensure the safe operation of this bellow restraint.
