Wideband radial line slot array antenna

An antenna includes a waveguide defined by a gap between a backplane with radial support ribs and a facesheet, a teardrop-shaped feed pin at a center of the backplane, and a foam spacer between the backplane and facesheet. An outward facing side of the facesheet includes thermal paint. The facesheet includes pairs of through-hole slots for releasing portions of a wave of radiation in the waveguide to generate a transmit-beam or to receive the receive-beam to generate the wave of radiation. The pairs may be disposed as a spiral array about a center of the facesheet. Each of the pairs may include first and second slots. A length of the second slot is oriented approximately perpendicular to a length of the first slot. Dispositions of the slots are set by a computer process. The dispositions optimize a trade-off between transmit and receive gains.

Modal Field Reconstruction in Resonant Cavities in the Fundamental and Undermoded Frequency Regimes

Theory, simulations, and experiments are presented that demonstrate reconstruction of electromagnetic fields in a cavity from sparse probe measurements. Such techniques are often referred to as virtual sensing, allowing fields at unobserved locations to be predicted. These methods are appropriate for the fundamental and undermoded regimes, providing the ability to estimate fields (and shielding effectiveness) throughout an arbitrarily shaped cavity from a few judiciously spaced probes. A modal simulation method is implemented that allows the response of arbitrarily shaped cavities to be rapidly computed with respect to varying probe locations and slot parameters, enabling statistical analysis of probe placement on reconstruction performance. A cylindrical vessel with numerous probe holes is developed for experiments, referred to as Perforated Vessel 2 (PV2). Experiments are performed on the vessel with and without a steel box inside, where transmit power is delivered into the vessel either through probes (probe injection) or through slots using an external antenna (slot excitation). Simulations and experiments illustrate that when the number of probes is minimal (equal to the number of mode coefficients to be estimated at each frequency), probe placement is critical to avoid missed peaks and to have acceptable reconstruction error. Probe placement becomes less important as the number of probes is increased, but care is still required to avoid probe locations giving poor performance.

Wireless Passive Ceramic Sensor for Far-Field Temperature Measurement at High Temperatures

A passive wireless high-temperature sensor for far-field applications was developed for stable temperature sensing up to 1000 °C. The goal is to leverage the properties of electroceramic materials, including adequate electrical conductivity, high-temperature resilience, and chemical stability in harsh environments. Initial sensors were fabricated using Ag for operation to 600 °C to achieve a baseline understanding of temperature sensing principles using patch antenna designs. Fabrication then followed with higher temperature sensors made from (In, Sn) O2 (ITO) for evaluation up to 1000 °C. A patch antenna was modeled in ANSYS HFSS to operate in a high-frequency region (2.5–3.5 GHz) within a 50 × 50 mm2 confined geometric area using characteristic material properties. The sensor was fabricated on Al2O3 using screen printing methods and then sintered at 700 °C for Ag and 1200 °C for ITO in an ambient atmosphere. Sensors were evaluated at 600 °C for Ag and 1000 °C for ITO and analyzed at set interrogating distances up to 0.75 m using ultra-wideband slot antennas to collect scattering parameters. The sensitivity (average change in resonant frequency with respect to temperature) from 50 to 1000 °C was between 22 and 62 kHz/°C which decreased as interrogating distances reached 0.75 m.

Hierarchical Phased-Array Antennas Coupled to Al KIDs: A Scalable Architecture for Multi-band Millimeter/Submillimeter Focal Planes

We present the optical characterization of two-scale hierarchical phased-array antenna kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs) for millimeter/submillimeter wavelengths. Our KIDs have a lumped-element architecture with parallel plate capacitors and aluminum inductors. The incoming light is received with a hierarchical phased array of slot dipole antennas, split into 4 frequency bands (between 125 GHz and 365 GHz) with on-chip lumped-element band-pass filters, and routed to different KIDs using microstriplines. Individual pixels detect light for the 3 higher-frequency bands (190–365 GHz), and the signals from four individual pixels are coherently summed to create a larger pixel detecting light for the lowest frequency band (125–175 GHz). The spectral response of the band-pass filters was measured using Fourier transform spectroscopy (FTS), the far-field beam pattern of the phased-array antennas was obtained using an infrared source mounted on a 2-axis translating stage, and the optical efficiency of the KIDs was characterized by observing loads at 294 K and 77 K. We report on the results of these three measurements.

A Novel Miniaturized MIMO Microstrip Patch Antenna Array with EBG- and Slot-Loading

A compact four-element multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna array based on the miniaturized mi-crostrip patch is presented. The reduction in array form factor is realized by partially populating the ground plane with elec-tromagnetic band gap (EBG) cells constructed from cross slots, in combination with reactively loading each patch with a slot. The resultant 2 × 2 array system demonstrates excellent inter-element isolation and can be easily fabricated using traditional milling and printing techniques, as it exploits a 2D layout that can be conveniently implemented on two sides of a single-layer substrate, without the need for any via structures. The operation of the array near the 2.5 GHz band is verified with full-wave simulations. The size of the new design is approximately 42% of that employing conventional patch elements.
