Arctic Black Carbon Aerosol Deposition Study North Slope of Alaska 2020- Sonic Anemometer Measurements

Particles are removed from the atmosphere through both wet and dry deposition. These processes are poorly understood, though they constitute important uncertainties in climate and air quality models. This project aims to use observational constraints on particle fluxes to improve model representations of dry deposition. Within this data set, we measured wind properties using a sonic anemometer. Measurements were made at the meteorological tower between 9 Sept and 25 Oct 2021. This site is a coastal tundra location, and received snow during the project.

WREF 3D Sonic Anemometer - Tower A / Raw Data

Tower A is one of four subcanopy towers that were installed in the WREF canopy across a transect distance of 200m. Tower A had two CSAT3-3D sonics mounted at a height of 2.7m a.g.l. One (A1) is facing 290 degrees; the second (A2) is facing 90 degrees. The towers were installed to observe flow just above the forest floor and to identify any advection flows in the canopy. These data were also part of a larger ICOS project looking at forest flow coupling/decoupling with tower sites in Italy and Czech Republic.

Particle Flux Measurements during TRACER (TRACER PFM) (Field Campaign Report)

The purpose of this campaign was to deploy an instrument payload collocated with a suite of in situ and remote-sensing aerosol instruments at the urban site at the La Porte, Texas Municipal Airport during the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Tracking Aerosol Convection Interactions Experiment (TRACER) in Houston, Texas. The payload was designed to characterize the physicochemical properties, mixing state, and size-resolved vertical fluxes of aerosols. Deployed aerosol instruments associated with the flux measurements included three condensation particle counters (CPCs) with different lower cutoff diameters ( D > 2.5 nm, D > 10 nm, and D > 40 nm), a single-particle soot photometer (SP2) measuring refractory black carbon, and a portable optical particle spectrometer (POPS) measuring the optical size distribution (~180 nm < D < ~5000 nm). A 10-m flux tower hosted a sonic anemometer (SONIC) for vertical velocity measurements. In addition, a humidified tandem differential mobility analyzer (HTDMA) was deployed to measure the growth factors and hygroscopicity parameter of 15-50 nm-sized particles in order to constrain the composition of compounds responsible for modal aerosol growth during new particle formation/growth events. Finally, a radial differential mobility analyzer (RDMA) was deployed to extend the size distribution measurement to 5 nm.

NCSU Flux Tower Data

NCSU Flux Tower Data Level b1: QC checks applied to measurements Data Format: CSV Description: See "instrument descripotion Site: Houston, TX; Tracking Aerosol Convection interactions ExpeRiment (HOU) Location: Houston, TX; AMF1 (main site for TRACER) Facility Code: M1 Category: Aerosol Properties Data Type: PI Data Source Instrument/Data: Sonic Anemometer, 3 Condensation Particle Counters, 1 SP2, 1 POPS Start Date: 2022-06-01 End Date: 2022-9-26 Contact PI: Markus Petters (mdpetter@ncsu.edu) Funding Source: DOE ASR award US Department of Energy, Office of Science, Biological and Environment Research (grant no. DE-SC 0021074) Instrument description The NCSU flux tower was located next to the AMF sampling pad. The flux tower consisted of a 10 m telescoping tower. Mounted at the top of the tower was a sonic anemometer (RM Young 8000) and a Krypton Hygrometer. A sample line (¼” conductive tubing) and communication line was laid to a trailer located underneath and slightly adjacent to the tower. The sample line brought aerosol inside the trailer at 4.5 L min-1, where it was distributed between 3 CPCs (TSI 3776c, Dc ~ 2.5 nm, TSI 3771, Dc ~10nm, and TSI 3772, Dc ~40 nm) with different size cuts. Also sampling was a printed particle optical spectrometer (POPS) and a single particle soot photometer (SP2). Please contact mdpetter@ncsu.edu for further information.

Eddy Covariance Flux / Processed Data

This dataset consists of estimates of mean and turbulent quantities from a vertical array of instruments installed on the barge met mast, including: sonic anemometers, relative humidity and temperature, pressure, and rain. One of the levels consists of a paired sonic anemometer and infrared gas analyzer for direct covariance sensible and latent heat fluxes. Mean and turbulent quantities are determined over 20-minute averaging periods.
