Spectrum Interference from Commercial devices in 6 & 7/8 GHz

FCC repurposed spectrum in the 6 GHz band allocated to DOE for commercial use of Wi-Fi 6E/7 in 2020.The 2024 National Spectrum Strategy (NSS) implementation plan is now considering 7/8 GHz band as well for co-existence of commercial devices with federal incumbents such as DOE. This poster summarizes INL’s work on a scientific study on the potential harmful interference caused by the commercial devices in real-world scenarios. It includes research in INL for the following projects funded by DOE: 1) DOE-CIO: Spectrum security for advanced wireless technologies; 2) DOE-OE: 7 GHz Spectrum interference study; 3) DOE-CESER: Harmful interference in 6 GHz from commercial Wi-Fi 6E/7 devices on utility links in the energy sector; 4) DOE/NTIA for NSS Implementation plan: Interference study in 7/8 GHz bands identified in the NSS. 5) NSF: Spectrum Innovation Initiative- National Radio Dynamic Zones (SII-NRDZ).

National Spectrum Strategy (NSS): Its Impact on the DOE Spectrum Allocations

A national initiative to allow commercial service to co-exist with the U.S. Government (USG) in spectrum bands previously used only by the Government has started (White House/NTIA/FCC). The INL, in tandem with the DoE OCIO, has begun researching the possible impacts of spectrum interference on critical communications across the energy sector. This session will share research output for the 6 GHz band study and plans for the 7/8 GHz roadmap.

Ultra-Wideband Communications: Interference Challenges and Solutions

The idea of ultra-wideband (UWB) communications for short ranges (up to a few tens of meters) has been around for nearly three decades. However, despite significant efforts by the industry, UWB deployment has not yet reached its predicted potential. This article, thus, seeks to rectify this situation by providing a practical examination of UWB interference conditions. Through a spectrum survey of today's wireless environments, we explore the interference that UWB devices may face from a perspective of outage probability in both high- and low-rate configurations. We find that by suppressing interference, the outage probability can be reduced by one or more orders of magnitude. In the non-line-of-sight channels, in particular, we find that both interference suppression and bandwidth expansion are required to support the minimum data rates suggested in the IEEE802.15.4 series of standards. Here, we connect these findings to a recently proposed UWB signaling method based on filter banks and show this method fulfills the above requirements for implementing effective UWB systems.

DOE CESER 6 GHz Interference Study

DOE CESER has sponsored Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to conduct an objective and independent study of potential 6 GHz interference from outdoor operation of unlicensed devices in the 6 GHz band on fixed service (FS) microwave communication links operated by electrical sector incumbents in that band. INL is collaborating with University of Notre Dame (UND), Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), Lockard & White, Southern Company, and AT&T, to gather data with real-world 6 GHz interference experiments and identify (1) the potential for interference from unlicensed devices and (2) the interference necessary to cause harm to the incumbents. In addition to the functional assessment, a security assessment of the FCC mandated Automatic Frequency Coordination (AFC) System to regulate use of unlicensed 6 GHz standard power devices is also being conducted. A major objective is to create a science-based and defensible methodology used to produce the necessary data and to derive objective conclusions. This proven methodology can then be used to produce objective data and conclusions for other spectrum bands with similar incumbent uses including 4.4 – 4.9 GHz and 7.125 – 7.4 GHz, identified in the reconciliation bill that was adopted on July 4, 2025, as well as the National Spectrum Strategy discussions that are ongoing. This report contains 6 GHz field experiments and findings in the following real-world scenarios with commercial unlicensed standard power (SP) 6 GHz devices regulated by Automated Frequency Coordination (AFC): • University of Notre Dame (UND) Stadium with a capacity of 80,000 spectators, where Wi-Fi operating in 6 GHz has been deployed recently • Southern Company 6 GHz FS microwave link between Columbus and Fortson, Georgia Following are the following key findings from this study. 1. The AFC is under-protective of FS when line-of-sight exists along the path centerline. Data collected at Southern’s 6 GHz fixed link site shows significant erosion of as much as 21.4-24.4 dB of under-protection that can lead to potential service degradation under typical operating conditions. This first key finding is most likely the result of erroneous use of the RF propagation model. INL will collaborate with EPRI and the AFC Functional Requirements Working Group to submit a change request to the WinnForum TS-1014 standard towards correct use of the propagation model by the AFC. 2. There is additive interference effect of about 3 dB from nearly equal power interferers measured from simultaneous operation of two SP AP's operating co-channel with the FS receive from different locations along the path. This second key finding should be used to add the impact of additive interference of operation of multiple APs in the same geographical area, to the next generation of AFCs. INL will collaborate with FCC on the need for the AFC to consider additive interference. We also recommend that additional experiments are conducted on 6 GHz spectrum interference to further improve the AFC operation as the number of outdoor Wi-Fi devices continues to increase. These proposed steps and recommendations will make the co-existence of the incumbents and the 6 GHz outdoor Wi-Fi providers possible without any impact on the incumbents with a win-win outcome for all.

Radio Frequency Spectrum Audit to Inventory Private Cellular Base Station Infrastructure

The ever-changing cellular communication landscape makes it difficult to identify, map, and localize cellular base stations. Localizing cellular base stations provides various advantages, including information security, cybersecurity, spectrum management, and interference detection. For example, the MITRE ATT&CK® (Adversarial Tactics, Techniques, and Common Knowledge architecture) [1] and Common Attack Pattern Enumeration and Classification [2] emphasize the importance of being able to minimize the cyber security threat presented by unregulated private cellular base stations (PCBS). The majority of published research looks at the malicious use of PCBSs and focuses on using data retrieved from user equipment (UE), data obtained from an application on the UE, or data shared between the UE and a mobile network to locate it. This innovative strategy, however, focuses on the passively discovered uniqueness of radio frequency (RF) transmissions from commercial cellular infrastructure received in a designated monitoring position (DMP).

Contrasting Time-Frequency Representations for Unknown Waveform Detection

In real-world applications like spectrum management and interference detection, dealing with unseen electromagnetic waveforms is critical. Although some methods attempt to simulate open set data using generator models, they face challenges in generating synthetic samples for open set while simultaneously selecting an optimal discriminator for accurate classification. This results in difficulties capturing distinctive features across classes, especially in dynamic scenarios where new classes emerge. To detect unseen waveforms, we propose combining time and frequency domain features with cosine similarity loss to enhance feature distinctiveness and enabling more accurate predictions. This approach efficiently captures more comprehensive information than single-domain representations or approaches without cosine loss. Additionally, our model avoids generic feature vectors by extracting class-specific features during training, resulting in improved class representation. The experiment results show that this combined feature approach with cosine loss outperforms single-domain models and improves accuracy by 10\% over models without cosine loss.

Theory of resonant x-ray scattering with ultrafast intense pulses

Here, we present a time-dependent Schrödinger equation approach within a nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics framework to investigate resonant x-ray scattering driven by intense x-ray pulses. This method enables us to explore how coherent x-ray electron dynamics influence scattering signals from Ne + . We account for both resonance fluorescence and elastic scattering channels, while also considering competing photoionization and inner-shell decay processes. By computing the angular distribution and energy spectrum of scattered photons, we uncover interference effects between elastic scattering and resonance fluorescence pathways. Notably, this interference results in a small asymmetry in the energy spectrum. We discuss the experimental potential for detecting signatures of interference. Our findings demonstrate that the x-ray Rabi dynamics can be used to control scattering responses and provide insights into interference mechanisms and scattering efficiency in high-intensity x-ray regimes.

Higher-order Van Hove singularities in kagome topological bands

Motivated by the growing interest in band structures featuring higher-order Van Hove singularities (HOVHS), we investigate a spinless fermion kagome system characterized by nearest-neighbor (NN) and next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) hopping amplitudes. While NN hopping preserves time-reversal symmetry, NNN hopping, akin to chiral hopping on the Haldane lattice, breaks time-reversal symmetry and leads to the formation of topological bands with Chern numbers ranging from 𝐶 = ±1 to ±4. We perform analytical and numerical analysis of the energy bands near the high-symmetry points Γ, ±𝐊, and 𝐌 𝑖 (𝑖 = 1, 2, and 3), which uncover a rich and complex landscape of HOVHS, controlled by the magnitude and phase of the NNN hopping. We observe power-law divergences in the density of states (DOS), 𝜌⁡(𝜀)∼|𝜀| −𝜈 , with exponents 𝜈 = 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, which can significantly affect the anomalous Hall response at low temperatures when the Fermi level crosses the HOVHS. Additionally, the NNN hopping induces the formation of higher Chern number bands 𝐶 = ±2, ±4 in the middle of the spectrum obeying a sublattice interference whereupon electronic states are maximally localized in each of the sublattices when the momentum approaches the three high-symmetry points 𝐌 𝑖 (𝑖 = 1, 2, and 3) on the Brillouin zone boundary. Finally, this classification of HOVHS in kagome systems provides a platform to explore unconventional electronic orders induced by electronic correlations.

Contrasting Time-Frequency Representations for Unknown Waveform Detection

Identifying unseen electromagnetic waveforms is critical for many applications, like interference management, electronic warfare and spectrum management. Traditionally this is done using statistical methods for anomaly detection, which has evolved to deep learning models for identifying the unseen data, formally termed as open set recognition. Some prior methods use a generative model to emulate open set data, which face challenges in generating synthetic samples for open set while simultaneously selecting an optimal discriminator for accurate classification. To alleviate this issue, we propose a discriminative model that effectively combines time and frequency domain features of communication signals for accurate predictions. We further introduce a cosine similarity loss that makes the domain specific features unique to enhance the prediction rate. Additionally, our model avoids generic feature vectors by extracting class-specific features during training, resulting in improved class representation. The experiment results show that this combined feature approach with cosine loss outperforms single-domain models and improves accuracy by 10% over models without cosine loss.

Photoproduction of K0K0-bar with the GlueX Experiment

In this dissertation, we study photoproduction of K0 ?K 0 through the KSKLp and KSKSp ?nal states with the GlueX Phase-I (GlueX-I) data set. We measure the spin-density matrix elements (SDMEs) and di?erential cross section of ?(1020) ! KSKL to better understand photoproduction of light vector mesons. A mass independent Partial Wave Analysis (PWA) of the KSKL and KSKS meson spectrum below 2 GeV is also undertaken to study the meson spectrum with JPC = even++ and odd??. The ?(1020) di?erential cross section is measured at E = 8:2 ? 8:8 GeV and ?t = 0:15 ? 1:00 GeV2. The di?erential cross section is well described by an exponential decay with slope 4:44?0:01 GeV?2 and the integrated cross section is determined to be 295:7?0:4 nb, only statistical uncertainties are quoted. Both measurements are consistent and far more precise than the previous measurement by Ballam et al. [1]. The ?(1020) SDMEs were measured in nine bins of ?t in the same range. At low ?t, we ?nd the data were consistent with s-channel helicity conservation, SCHC, i. e. the only non-zero SDMEs were ?1 1?1 = ?Im(?2 1?1) = 1=2. At higher ?t, the SDMEs deviate from SCHC and the measurements indicate this is due to natural parity exchange since we observe that the SDMEs are consistent with zero unnatural exchange. We also ?find that the contribution from helicity double-flip amplitudes is consistent with zero. The measured SDMEs are in poor agreement with theoretical predictions put forward by JPAC [35]. These measurements will serve as input to re?ne models of production processes, which will be essential for the interpretation of possible signals of exotic mesons in GlueX. Analysis of the spectrum above the ?(1020) indicates the presence of at least three particles at ? 1:50, ? 1:75, and 2:20 GeV. We employ simple parametrizations of the resonance line shape based on relativistic Breit-Wigner functions considering cases with and without interference. The resonance at ? 1:50 GeV is not identifi?ed as any specifi?c resonance, but could be due to interference between the ?(1450) and !(1420). Our models favor the resonance at ~1:75 GeV as the X(1750) rather than the ?(1680). We ?find that introducing a third Breit-Winger into the models improves the ?t quality with the ?2/ndf going from 1.75 to 1.59 and 1.41 to 1.18 for models without and with interference respectively. A PWA of the KSKL spectrum indicates that the spectrum is consistent with exclusively spin-1 contribution up to ? 1:6 GeV. Above ? 1:6 GeV we ?find evidence for a small spin-3 contribution. We also ?nd that the spectrum predominantly positive reflectivity up to ? 1:6 GeV, after which the spectrum becomes a nearly equal mix of both. The KSKS system shows a rich spectrum with multiple resonance structures but is more statistically limited than the KSKL system. Modelling the line shape we ?find evidence at greater than 10? level in favor of a resonance at ? 1:75 GeV. The model parameters suggest this resonance is the f0(1710). The PWA of the KSKS system was inconclusive. However, using a small set of amplitudes suggests that the spin-2 contribution to the spectrum is primarily in the range 1:2?1:6 GeV, where f2(1270), a2(1320) and f02 (1525) are expected.

Optimal filtering and generation of entangled photons for quantum applications in the presence of noise

Filtering is commonly used in quantum optics to reject noise photons, and also to enable interference between independent photons. However, filtering the joint spectrum of photon pairs can reduce the inherent coincidence probability or loss-independent heralding efficiency. Here we investigate filtering for multiphoton applications based on entanglement and interference (e.g., quantum teleportation). We multiplex C-band entangled photons and C-band classical communications into the same long-distance fibers, which enables scalable low-loss quantum networking but requires filtering of spontaneous Raman scattering noise from classical light. Using tunable-bandwidth filters, low-jitter detectors, and polarization filters, we distribute wavelength-degenerate time-bin entangled photons in the C band (1536.5 nm) over 25 km/25 km standard fibers (50 km) each carrying 10 Gbit/s C-band classical data signals. Narrow filtering enables milliwatt-level C-band power, which exceeds the power achieved by comparable studies by roughly an order of magnitude and could feasibly support terabit per second classical rates. We evaluate how performance depends on pump and filter bandwidths, multipair emission, filter shapes, loss, phase matching, and how quantum information is measured. We find a trade-off between reducing noise impact and increasing single-mode purity, and discuss mitigation methods toward optimal multiphoton applications. Importantly, these results apply to noise in free space and in quantum devices (sources, frequency converters, switches, detectors, etc.) and provide insight into filter-induced degradation of single-photon purity and rates even in noise-free environments.

Phase and contrast moiré signatures in two-dimensional cone beam interferometry

Neutron interferometry has played a distinctive role in fundamental science and characterization of materials. Moiré neutron interferometers are candidate next-generation instruments: they offer microscopy-like magnification of the signal, enabling direct camera recording of interference patterns across the full neutron wavelength spectrum. Here we demonstrate the extension of phase-grating moiré interferometry to two-dimensional geometries. Our fork-dislocation phase gratings reveal phase singularities in the moiré pattern, and we explore orthogonal moiré patterns with two-dimensional phase gratings. Our measurements of phase topologies and gravitationally induced phase shifts are in good agreement with theory. These techniques can be implemented in existing neutron instruments to advance interferometric analyses of emerging materials and precision measurements of fundamental constants. 7-8 GHz Point-to-Point Testing

Wireless spectrum is a limiting resource for continued economic growth in the United States. As discussed in the recent National Spectrum Strategy (NSS), wireless spectrum underpins several aspects of the U.S. economy and the demand for additional spectrum is driving the need for realizing spectrum sharing to enable continued development. At the same time, wireless spectrum is an essential foundation of critical energy infrastructure, including electric, oil, and natural gas resources. In particular, wireless point-to-point (P2P) links are the backbone of vast infrastructure networks that enable the flow of sensor and control information needed to manage critical energy sector infrastructure in the United States. These links will only become more important as the energy sector incorporates more diverse sensing and more efficient control mechanisms, which increases system complexity and data volume requiring more resilient communications. Therefore, the continued economic development of the U.S. depends on determining novel approaches to spectrum management that balance both broad access for advanced wireless technologies and resilience for critical infrastructure.

21 cm Power Spectrum Analysis of North Celestial Pole Observations with the Tianlai Dish Pathfinder Array

The Tianlai Dish Pathfinder Array (TDPA) is a radio interferometer designed to test techniques for 21 cm intensity mapping in the post-reionization Universe as a means of measuring large-scale cosmic structure. Using nine nights of observations targeting the North Celestial Pole field, totaling approximately 107 hr of integration time, we analyze data in the frequency range 700–800 MHz (corresponding to redshift z ∼ 0.9). We do the data format conversion, radio frequency interference flagging, calibration, imaging and point source subtraction, and foreground removal via Singular Value Decomposition. The spherically averaged power spectrum Δ 2 (k) is obtained. Furthermore, this work successfully establishes and validates a comprehensive data analysis framework for the TDPA. We identify key improvements including sky model refinement, increased integration time, and pipeline optimization that will enable future detection of the 21 cm signal through auto-correlation and cross-correlation with optical galaxy surveys.

Multicarrier Spread Spectrum Communications With Noncontiguous Subcarrier Bands for HF Skywave Links

Existing high-frequency (HF) radio platforms offer robust performance against the volatile HF propagation channel. However, the growing traffic across the band contests the reliability of these systems. While techniques to mitigate the effects of narrowband interference have been thoroughly explored, they are insufficient against wideband interference or when the transmission band is occupied by numerous scattered users. To improve reliability in these congested channel conditions, we propose a filter-bank based multicarrier spread-spectrum waveform with noncontiguous subcarrier bands. Using noncontiguous subcarrier bands enables the system to at once leverage the robustness of a wideband system while retaining the frequency agility of a narrowband system. In this study, we modify a filter-bank transmitter structure to accommodate noncontiguous subcarrier bands and consider several immediate impacts of this change, such as elevated peak-to-average-power ratios (PAPRs). A receiver architecture to process the noncontiguous spread-spectrum signal is also introduced, along with details regarding wideband channel estimation. Finally, we develop efficient transmitter and receiver structures to support practical system implementations. We conclude by comparing the performance of contiguous and noncontiguous systems through both simulation and over-the-air testing. The results show that the noncontiguous system remains robust in typical HF channels while significantly outperforming the contiguous system in congested spectral conditions.

Investigation of oscillations above the acoustic cut-off frequency for a sample of Kepler stars. II. Identifying temporal frequency shifts

ABSTRACT Stellar oscillations with frequencies greater than the acoustic cut-off frequency are not trapped within the star’s interior. Geometric interference between these high-frequency waves produces a peak-like structure in the power spectrum of the star, known as the pseudo-modes. In this study, we aim to analyse 51 stars previously identified (from a sample of 91 Kepler stars) to contain statistically significant evidence for pseudo-modes, to determine if the pseudo-mode frequencies vary in time. We obtained these frequency variations and the uncertainty by the resampled periodogram approach, where periodogram realisations were created from successive, overlapping 90-d time segments, and a cross-correlation function was generated between them. The computed shifts were compared against temporal p-mode frequency shifts and a stellar magnetic activity proxy, $S_{\mathrm{ph}}$. We found that for 16 per cent of the stars pseudo-mode frequency shifts were significantly anticorrelated with p-mode shifts, as is the case for the Sun. However, we also found pseudo-mode and p-mode shifts to be significantly correlated in-phase in 8 per cent of our sample. The remainder showed no significant correlation. We also searched for trends between the maximum variation of pseudo-mode frequency shifts and stellar parameters. Whilst we found no correlation between the maximum variation and stellar photospheric and chromospheric proxies, we found frequency variations to have a greater amplitude for cooler and slower rotating stars, which is in opposition to p-mode frequency shift variation. Temporal changes to pseudo-mode frequencies may be attributable to variations in stellar magnetic activity, and therefore can contribute to our understanding of stellar activity cycles.

Tuning magneto-optical zero reflection via dual-channel hybrid magnonics

Multichannel coupling in hybrid systems makes an attractive testbed not only because of the distinct advantages entailed by each constituent mode but also because the opportunity to leverage interference among the various excitation pathways. Here, via combined analytical calculation and experiment, we demonstrate that the phase of the magnetization precession at the interface of a coupled yttrium iron garnet (YIG)/permalloy (Py) bilayer is collectively controlled by the microwave photon field torque and the interlayer exchange torque, manifesting a coherent, dual-channel excitation scheme that effectively tunes the magneto-optical spectrum. Furthermore, the different torque contributions vary with frequency, external bias field, and type of interlayer coupling between YIG and Py, which further results in destructive or constructive interferences between the two excitation channels, and hence selective suppression or amplification of the hybridized magnon modes.
