Materials Data on SrPd by Materials Project

SrPd crystallizes in the orthorhombic Cmcm space group. The structure is three-dimensional. Sr is bonded in a 7-coordinate geometry to seven equivalent Pd atoms. There are a spread of Sr–Pd bond distances ranging from 3.21–3.30 Å. Pd is bonded in a 9-coordinate geometry to seven equivalent Sr and two equivalent Pd atoms. Both Pd–Pd bond lengths are 2.81 Å.

Ultrarelativistic Heavy-Ion Reactions at the LHC with the CMS Detector

This grant funded the travel to CERN to allow participation in the 2018 PbPb run as part of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector collaboration. Among the activities performed were the testing and installation of the spectator reaction plane detector (SRPD). This detector was designed and constructed by the heavy ion group at the University of Maryland. Its purpose is to map the spacial distribution of the spectator neutrons that make it at zero degrees to the Zero Degree Calorimeter (ZDC), located 140 meters from the interaction point of CMS. This will be used to determine the spectator reaction plane for the PbPb collisions. During this heavy ion run at the LHC, there was also the opportunity to participate in a test beam at the CERN SPS. A duplicate copy of the SRPD was used in this test. This report focuses on the results from the test beam.

Directed Flow and the Chiral Magnetic Effect in Ultrarelativistic Collisions with CMS at the LHC (Final Technical Report for DOE Grant # DE-SC0021080)

This Final Technical Report covers the years of activity for the Grant DE-SC0021080. It reflects the efforts of Alice Mignerey, the PI, Timothy Koeth, the co-PI, graduate students Eric Adams and Samuel Lascio, and undergraduates Alyssa Marinelli and Max Bernard. Results from three separate aspects of the project are presented: 1) understanding the radiation damage of the positive and negative sides of the Spectator Reaction Plane detector (SRPD) for data from the 2018 PbPb run at the CERN LHC. 2) Results of the directed flow in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{SNN}$ = 5.02 TeV. 3) Activation studies of the sectors of the positive side of the SRPD and radiation damage studies on fused quartz using the Maryland 4-MeV electron accelerator. The most significant result is that the reaction plane derived directed flow for both participant and spectator reaction planes is many times larger than that obtained by ALICE.

Crystal growth and magnetic structure of ternary silicide Eu Pd 3 Si 2

The hexagonal CaCu 5 –type structure (P6/mmm) is the prototype for more than 100 ternary borides, gallides, and silicides, with general stoichiometry of RTM 3 X 2 (R=lanthanide/alkaline earth; TM=transition metal; X=B, Ga, Si, Ge). Here we report the synthesis, crystal structure, and bulk magnetic properties of polycrystalline and single crystal samples of EuPd 3 Si 2 and its nonmagnetic analog SrPd 3 Si 2 . Both compounds crystallize in the orthorhombic space group symmetry Imma (no. 74, Z = 2, oI12) displaying pseudohexagonal symmetry. Ferromagnetic (FM) order of Eu 2+ at T C1 =78K and a spin-reorientation transition at T C2 =5K appear as distinctive features in bulk magnetization, specific heat, and resistivity/resistance measurements. Neutron powder diffraction measurements on EuPd 3 Si 2 confirm FM order of the Eu 2+ spins below T C1 , with the spins aligned along the a axis below T C2 . Electronic band structure calculations corroborate the crystal structure and the FM state for EuPd 3 Si 2 , with a Pd d–band polarization in the same direction as the Eu 4f polarization, enhancing the observed spin moment.

Directed Flow and the Chiral Magnetic Effect in Ultrarelativistic Collisions at the LHC with CMS at the LHC (Final Technical Report)

This Technical Report focuses on two aspects of this project. First, the results from the calibration of the Spectator Reaction Plane Detector (SRPD) addition to the Zero Degree Calorimeter (ZDC) in the CMS experiment are presented, followed by the pre-liminary results from radiation studies of quartz being performed using the electron linac here at the University of Maryland. The data taken in the November 2018 run are being analyzed with the ultimate goal of producing a reaction plane measurement using spectator neutrons detected in the ZDC. Funds provided by this grant partially supported the graduate student who is performing these calibrations. They were also used to support radiation tests of quartz rod material being performed at the University of Maryland Radiation Facilities Electron Linear Accelerator.
