High resolution Fourier interferometer-spectrophotopolarimeter

A high-resolution Fourier interferometer-spectrophotopolarimeter is provided using a single linear polarizer-analyzer the transmission axis azimuth of which is positioned successively in the three orientations of 0 deg, 45 deg, and 90 deg, in front of a detector; four flat mirrors, three of which are switchable to either of two positions to direct an incoming beam from an interferometer to the polarizer-analyzer around a sample cell transmitted through a medium in a cell and reflected by medium in the cell; and four fixed focussing lenses, all located in a sample chamber attached at the exit side of the interferometer. This arrangement can provide the distribution of energy and complete polarization state across the spectrum of the reference light entering from the interferometer; the same light after a fixed-angle reflection from the sample cell containing a medium to be analyzed; and the same light after direct transmission through the same sample cell, with the spectral resolution provided by the interferometer.

JPL activities on development of acousto-optic tunable filter imaging spectrometer

Recent activities of JPL in the development of a new type of imaging spectrometers for earth observation and planetary exploration are reported. This instrument uses the acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) as high resolution and fast programmable bandpass filter. AOTF operates in the principle of acousto-optic interaction in an anisotropic medium. This filter can be tuned in sequential, random, and multiwavelength access modes, providing observational flexibility. The diffraction process in the filter generates two diffracted monochromatic beams with polarization orthogonal to each other, creating a unique capability to measure both polarimetric and spectral properties of the incoming light simultaneously with a single instrument. The device gives wide wavelength operations with reasonably large throughput. In addition, it is in a compact solid-state structure without moving parts, providing system reliability. These attractive features give promising opportunities to develop a new generation of airborne/spaceborne and ground, real-time, imaging spectrometer systems for remote sensing applications.

Porphyrins in the interstellar medium (in grains)

Spectral sensitivity of the chromophores to their immediate chemical environment establishes some of the chemical constituents of the grains in which they reside. These are: (1) Paraffins, such as, octane, nonane, decane, and others...(needed for Shpolskii matrices and producing quasilines); and (2) Pyridine. The presence of pyridine is required not only to produce the spectral DIB matching, but also to produce the 36 cm(sup -1) crystal field splitting of the S(sub 1) electronic state. The presence of pyridine in the grains can be confirmed spectroscopically. Pyridine produces a transmission window at 2175 A, matching exactly the well known UV hump. On grain reflection, some of the incoming UV radiation is absorbed into the grain's outer layers. Spikes in the lab and in the astronomical data are due to vibronic transitions in pyridine. The lab spectroscopy reported here clearly establishes the presence of MgTBP, H2TPB, and pyridine in the interstellar grains. The high fluorescence efficiency of MgTBP (being optically pumped in the visible) apparently accounts for all the observed UIR emissions.

Impacts of Extreme Events on Human Health

Increased Exposure to Extreme Events Key Finding 1: Health impacts associated with climate-related changes in exposure to extreme events include death, injury, or illness; exacerbation of underlying medical conditions; and adverse effects on mental health[High Confidence]. Climate change will increase exposure risk in some regions of the United States due to projected increases in the frequency and/or intensity of drought, wildfires, and flooding related to extreme precipitation and hurricanes [Medium Confidence].Disruption of Essential Infrastructure Key Finding 2: Many types of extreme events related to climate change cause disruption of infrastructure, including power, water, transportation, and communication systems, that are essential to maintaining access to health care and emergency response services and safeguarding human health [High Confidence].Vulnerability to Coastal Flooding Key Finding 3: Coastal populations with greater vulnerability to health impacts from coastal flooding include persons with disabilities or other access and functional needs, certain populations of color, older adults, pregnant women and children, low-income populations, and some occupational groups [High Confidence].Climate change will increase exposure risk to coastal flooding due to increases in extreme precipitation and in hurricane intensity and rainfall rates, as well as sea level rise and the resulting increases in storm surge.

Boundary Conditions for Unsteady Compressible Flows

This paper explores solutions to the spherically symmetric Euler equations. Motivated by the work of Hagstrom and Hariharan and Geer and Pope, we modeled the effect of a pulsating sphere in a compressible medium. The literature available on this suggests that an accurate numerical solution requires artificial boundary conditions which simulate the propagation of nonlinear waves in open domains. Until recently, the boundary conditions available were in general linear and based on nonreflection. Exceptions to this are the nonlinear nonreflective conditions of Thompson, and the nonlinear reflective conditions of Hagstrom and Hariharan. The former are based on the rate of change of the incoming characteristics; the latter rely on asymptotic analysis and the method of characteristics and account for the coupling of incoming and outgoing characteristics. Furthermore, Hagstrom and Hariharan have shown that, in a test situation in which the flow would reach a steady state over a long time, Thompson's method could lead to an incorrect steady state. The current study considers periodic flows and includes all possible types and techniques of boundary conditions. The technique recommended by Hagstrom and Hariharan proved superior to all others considered and matched the results of asymptotic methods that are valid for low subsonic Mach numbers.

Comparing Performance of Coded Communications over Fading Channels between the Lunar South Pole & Earth

In this paper we design and analyze an end-to-endcommunication system between a lander/rover on the surface ofthe lunar South Pole and an Earth station. Various communicationsystems on the lander or rover could be used for the Earthto-Moon communication in both the uplink and downlink direction. To communicate to and from the lander/rover on the lunarSouth Pole, low and/or medium directional antennas onboardthe lander/rover will have to be pointed at low elevation anglesbetween 2 to 10 degrees, thus causing multipath fading effectsdue to reflection of a portion of the transmitted electromagneticwaves from the surface of the Moon. These are not commonlyencountered in traditional deep space communications betweena spacecraft and a ground station. We investigate various design methods and analyze such communicationsystems, in the presence of multipath fading. Wemodel the fading channel based on existing and simulated data. For coherent reception, the acquisition and tracking loop shouldacquire and track incoming carrier phase in presence of Ricianmultipath fading. For this communication system in additionto estimating the received carrier phase, the amplitude of thefading signal should also be estimated, in particular to be used inthe decoder. We consider simple modulation and coding schemesin particular those specified in the CCSDS standards for spaceapplications. After designing various components of the communication system,we use Simulink models to obtain the end-to-end performanceof the communication link under investigation. Basedon the available data, the fading channel can be accuratelymodeled as a Rician fading channel with various Rician parametersdepending on the Earth elevation angle, which alsoaffects the Doppler spread. Therefore, the challenge is todesign a communication system robust in the presence of themultipath fading where the channel conditions change in timeand thus produce fading. In summary, this paper comparespossible communication system designs, performance analysis, and simulations for coded system with/without interleaving withhard/soft decision and with/without channel state information(CSI), over a communication link between a lander/rover at theLunar south pole and a Deep Space Network station in presenceof Rician fading.
