Enhanced Performance Controller Design for Stochastic Systems by Adding Extra State Estimation onto the Existing Closed Loop Control

To enhance the performance of the tracking property , this paper presents a novel control algorithm for a class of linear dynamic stochastic systems with unmeasurable states, where the performance enhancement loop is established based on Kalman filter. Without changing the existing closed loop with the PI controller, the compensative controller is designed to minimize the variances of the tracking errors using the estimated states and the propagation of state variances. Moreover, the stability of the closed-loop systems has been analyzed in the mean-square sense. A simulated example is included to show the effectiveness of the presented control algorithm, where encouraging results have been obtained.

Swelling and Diffusion during Methanol Sorption into Hydrated Nafion

Diffusion within polymer electrolyte membranes is often coincident with time-dependent processes such as swelling and polymer relaxation, which are factors that limit their ability to block molecular crossover during use. The solution-diffusion model of membrane permeation, which is the accepted theory for dense polymers, applies only to steady-state processes and does not address dynamic internal structural changes that can accompany permeation. To begin discovery of how such changes can be coupled to the permeation process, we have constructed here a stochastic multiscale reaction-diffusion model that examines time-dependent methanol uptake into and swelling of hydrated Nafion. Several potential mechanisms of diffusion and polymer response are tested. The simulation predictions are compared to real-time Fourier transform infrared attenuated total reflectance spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR) absorbance reported in the literature [ Hallinan , D. T. , Jr. ; Elabd , Y. A. J. Phys. Chem. B 2007 , 111 , 13221 - 13230 ]. Of the proposed polymer response mechanisms, only one, a reaction-limited, local response to increasing methanol concentration that takes the entire experimental time frame of 600 s, produces simulated FTIR-ATR data consistent with experiment. The simulations show that water diffusion out of the membrane is minimal during methanol sorption and that changes in the measured infrared absorbances are due primarily to the increase in methanol concentration accompanied by dilution of water during swelling. Swelling involves densification of the polymer structure even as there is an overall volume expansion of the film. Potential connections between the polymer densification and molecular-level structural changes of Nafion in methanol are discussed. These results indicate that the interaction between methanol and Nafion serves to increase Nafion's capacity to accommodate large volumes of methanol-water solutions, facilitating increased permeation across the membrane relative to pure water.

The timbre of Hawking gravitons: an effective description of energy transport from holography

Planar black holes in AdS, which are holographically dual to compressible relativistic fluids, have a long-lived phonon mode that captures the physics of attenuated sound propagation and transports energy in the plasma. We describe the open effective field theory of this fluctuating phonon degree of freedom. The dynamics of the phonon is encoded in a single scalar field whose gravitational coupling has non-trivial spatial momentum dependence. This description fits neatly into the paradigm of classifying gravitational modes by their Markovianity index, depending on whether they are long-lived. The sound scalar is a non-Markovian field with index 3 - d for a d-dimensional fluid. We reproduce (and extend) the dispersion relation of the holographic sound mode to quartic order in derivatives, constructing in the process the effective field theory governing its attenuated dynamics and associated stochastic fluctuations. We also remark on the presence of additional spatially homogeneous zero modes in the gravitational problem, which remain disconnected from the phonon Goldstone mode.

Synthetic Electricity Market Data Generation and HERON Use Case Setup of Advanced Nuclear Reactors Coupled with Thermal Energy Storage Systems

This study evaluates and optimizes advanced nuclear reactors coupled with thermal energy storage (TES) systems in an Integrated Energy System (IES) architecture to enable advanced nuclear power plants (A NPP) to participate in multi-commodity markets, thus enhancing their economic competitiveness. Nuclear-TES coupling scenarios studied herein are designed attenuate the nuclear heat dynamics and defer energy delivery to a later time, enabling the nuclear reactor to continue operating at or near steady-state design conditions as usual while also enabling flexible generation. Three A-NPPs, namely, an advanced light-water reactor (A LWR), a high temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) and a liquid-metal fast reactor (LMFR) were selected as the initial use cases for demonstrating the technoeconomic of thermally balanced energy storage coupling design for thermal power extraction. Each of the reactor technologies were evaluated in two different electricity markets. Stochastic optimization approach was adopted which included the evaluation of price signals from the Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland (PJM) market, and Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), using an autoregressive moving average (ARMA) model. Risk Analysis Virtual Environment (RAVEN) tool and its dispatch optimization plugin, the Holistic Energy Resource Optimization Network (HERON), were used to perform dispatch and capacity optimization, using the price data provided by the ARMA models. The results from the Nuclear-TES use cases will be used to design and characterize dynamic integrated system behavior and feedback.
