A Deep, High-angular-resolution 3D Dust Map of the Southern Galactic Plane

We present a deep, high-angular-resolution 3D dust map of the southern Galactic plane over 239° < l < 6° and ∣ b∣ < 10° built on photometry from the DECaPS2 survey, in combination with photometry from VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea, the Two Micron All Sky Survey, and “Unofficial” Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer and parallaxes from Gaia Data Release 3 where available. To construct the map, we first infer the distance, extinction, and stellar types of over 700 million stars using the brutus stellar inference framework with a set of theoretical MESA Isochrone and Stellar Tracks (MIST) stellar models. Our resultant 3D dust map has an angular resolution of 1′ , roughly an order of magnitude finer than existing 3D dust maps and comparable to the angular resolution of the Herschel 2D dust emission maps. We detect complexes at the range of distances associated with the Sagittarius-Carina and Scutum-Centaurus arms in the fourth quadrant, as well as more distant structures out to a maximum reliable distance of d ≈ 10 kpc from the Sun. The map is sensitive up to a maximum extinction of roughly A V ≈ 12 mag. We publicly release both the stellar catalog and the 3D dust map, the latter of which can easily be queried via the Python package dustmaps. When combined with the existing Bayestar19 3D dust map of the northern sky, the DECaPS 3D dust map fills in the missing piece of the Galactic plane, enabling extinction corrections over the entire disk ∣b∣ < 10°. Our map serves as a pathfinder for the future of 3D dust mapping in the era of LSST and Roman, targeting regimes accessible with deep optical and near-infrared photometry but often inaccessible with Gaia.

Identification of more than 40 gravitationally magnified stars in a galaxy at redshift 0.725

Strong gravitational magnification enables the detection of faint background sources and allows researchers to resolve their internal structures and even identify individual stars in distant galaxies. Highly magnified individual stars are useful in various applications, including studies of stellar populations in distant galaxies and constraining dark matter structures in the lensing plane. However, these applications have been hampered by the small number of individual stars observed, as typically one or a few stars are identified from each distant galaxy. Here, we report the discovery of more than 40 microlensed stars in a single galaxy behind Abell 370 at redshift of 0.725 (dubbed ‘the Dragon arc’) when the Universe was half of its current age, using James Webb Space Telescope observations with the time-domain technique. These events were found near the expected lensing critical curves, suggesting that these are magnified stars that appear as transients from intracluster stellar microlenses. Through multi-wavelength photometry, we constrained their stellar types and found that many of them are consistent with red giants or supergiants magnified by factors of hundreds. Furthermore, this finding reveals a high occurrence of microlensing events in the Dragon arc and demonstrates that time-domain observations by the James Webb Space Telescope could lead to the possibility of conducting statistical studies of high-redshift stars.

The Tianlai-WIYN North Celestial Cap Redshift Survey

We present the results of a small, low redshift spectroscopic survey of galaxies within 3 degrees of the North Celestial Pole (NCP) selected using V-band photometry obtained from the North Celestial Cap Survey (NCCS) (Gorbikov & Brosch 2014). The purpose of the current survey is to create a redshift space template for 21 cm emission from neutral hydrogen with which to correlate radio line intensity observations by the Tianlai dish and cylinder interferometers. A total of 898 redshifts were obtained from the 2102 extended objects in the NCCS with m_V < 19 in the survey area. After accounting for extinction, the survey geometry and selection effects, the number density and clustering pattern of galaxies in the redshift catalog are consistent with other low redshift surveys. We were also able to identify 11 galaxy cluster candidates from this redshift catalog.
