Supergravity spectrum of AdS 5 black holes

We embed Kerr-Newman-AdS black holes into N = 8 gauged supergravity and study quadratic fluctuations around the black hole backgrounds of all fields in the larger theory. The equations of motion of the perturbations are partially diagonalized by the group theory of broken symmetry. Nearly all fields in theory have non-minimal couplings, so their equations of motion are not merely massive Klein-Gordon equations with minimal coupling to background gauge fields, and their analogues for fields with spin. In the special case of extremal black holes we identify specific modes of instability, some of which touch supersymmetric locus. For example, we identify scalar fields in supergravity that condense in the near horizon region and transition the black hole into a superconducting phase. We also identify supergravity modes that are susceptible to superradiant instability.

Extended JT supergravity and random matrix models: The power of the string equation

A number of supersymmetric Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity theories are known to be described (in the Euclidean path integral formulation) by double-scaled random matrix models. Such matrix models can be characterized using a certain “string equation”. It was shown recently that in extended supergravity, when the number of BPS states scales as e$^{S_0}$, where $S_0$ is the extremal entropy, a special ansatz for the leading order solution of the string equation yields the supergravity spectrum. Somewhat miraculously, the construction showed that the functional form of the non-BPS (continuum) sector predicts the precise form of the BPS sector, showing the robustness of the supergravity/matrix-model correspondence. In this paper, we refine the analysis and show that the string equation, combined with some simple requirements on solutions, are powerful tools for constraining the spectrum of extended JT supergravity theories. We re-explore the cases of $\mathcal{N} = 2$ and (small) $\mathcal{N} = 4$ JT supergravity, and then explore the new cases of spectra from $\mathcal{N} = 3$ and $\mathcal{N} = 4$ large JT supergravity (recently derived by Heydeman, Shi, and Turiaci) showing that our approach also works naturally for (nearly) all the models. Based on this success, we conjecture that these new supergravity models also have matrix model descriptions.

Inflaton Decay in No-Scale Supergravity and Starobinsky-like Models

We consider the decay of the inflaton in Starobinsky-like models arising from either an R+R 2 theory of gravity or N = 1 no-scale supergravity models. If Standard Model matter is simply introduced to the R+R 2 theory, the inflaton (which appears when the theory is conformally transformed into the Einstein frame) couples to matter predominantly in Standard Model Higgs kinetic terms. This will typically lead to a reheating temperature of ~3 × 10 9 GeV. However, if the Standard Model Higgs is conformally coupled to curvature, the decay rate may be suppressed and vanishes for conformal coupling ζ = 1/6. Nevertheless, the inflaton decays through the conformal anomaly, leading to a reheating temperature of the order of 10 8 GeV. The Starobinsky potential may also arise in no-scale supergravity. In this case, the inflaton decays if there is a direct coupling of the inflaton to matter in the superpotential or to gauge fields through the gauge kinetic function. We also discuss the relation between the theories and demonstrate the correspondence between the no-scale models and the conformally coupled R+R 2 theory (with ζ = 1/6).

Nonperturbative random matrix model of N = 2 JT supergravity

It is shown how to nonperturbatively define a random matrix model that captures key physics of N = 2 Jackiw-Teitelboim supergravity, going well beyond the perturbative topological expansion defined recently by Turiaci and Witten. A decomposition into an infinite family of certain multicritical models is derived, leading to the definition of a nonlinear ordinary differential equation from which the physics may be computed. Bogomol’nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) states are naturally described by the model. The nonperturbative completions of the spectral densities for non-BPS multiplets are readily extracted. The gravitational index of 5d black holes and black strings

The supersymmetric index of 5d black strings and spinning black holes in M-theory is related to that of 4d black holes in type IIA supergravity when both theories are compactified on the same Calabi-Yau threefold. We find the finite-temperature saddles for the 5d gravitational supersymmetric index by uplifting the recently found attractor saddles of the corresponding 4d index. We study uplifts for two types of geometries: 5d black holes and 5d black strings. For 5d black holes, the uplift guarantees that the index of 4d and 5d black holes match. For 5d black strings, the saddle reproduces the microscopic index at leading order in G N , even without the conventional decoupling limit taken in AdS/CFT. In particular, when the temperature is set to be finite in the 5d flat space region, the black string index is computed from an asymptotically flat solution where the AdS throat is absent. Further, as the temperature is lowered and eventually becomes infinitesimally small in the flat space region, the solution admits a novel decoupling limit in which the AdS 3 throat takes the form of a finite-temperature BTZ black hole that is known to compute the index in AdS 3 /CFT 2 . This represents the first step towards understanding holography for supersymmetric observables in flat space, away from the decoupling limit.

BPS and near-BPS black holes in AdS 5 and their spectrum in $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 SYM

We study quantum corrections in the gravitational path integral around nearly 1/16-BPS black holes in asymptotically AdS 5 × S 5 space, dual to heavy states in 4D N = 4 super Yang-Mills. The analysis provides a gravitational explanation of why 1/16-BPS black holes exhibit an exact degeneracy at large N and why all such states have the same charges, confirming the belief that the superconformal index precisely counts the entropy of extremal black holes. We show the presence of a gap of order N −2 between the 1/16-BPS black holes and the lightest near-BPS black holes within the same charge sector. This is the first example of such a gap for black hole states within the context of AdS 5 holography. We also derive the spectrum of near-BPS states that lie above this gap. Our computation relies on finding the correct version of the N = 2 super-Schwarzian theory which captures the breaking of the SU(1, 1|1) symmetry when the black hole has finite temperature and non-zero chemical potential. Finally, we comment on possible stringy and non-perturbative corrections that can affect the black hole spectrum.

Gravitational index of the heterotic string

The fundamental heterotic string has a tower of BPS states whose supersymmetric index has an exponential growth in the charges. We construct the saddle-point of the gravitational path integral corresponding to this index. The saddle-point configuration is a supersymmetric rotating non-extremal Euclidean black hole. This configuration is singular in the two-derivative theory. We show that the addition of higher-derivative terms in four-dimensional N = 2 supergravity resolves the singularity. In doing so, we extend the recently-developed “new attractor mechanism” to include the effect of higher-derivative terms. Remarkably, the one-loop, four-derivative F-term contribution to the prepotential leads to a precise match of the gravitational and microscopic index. We also comment, using the effective theory near the horizon, on the possibility of a string-size near-extremal black hole. Our results clarify the meaning of different descriptions of this system in the literature. The thermal state transitions to a winding condensate and a gas of strings without ever reaching a small black hole, while the index is captured by the rotating Euclidean black hole solution and is constant and thus smoothly connected to the microscopic ensemble.

Testing α -attractor quintessential inflation against CMB and low-redshift data

Due to universality and attractor properties, α-attractor quintessential inflation establishes direct relations between inflationary observables such as the scalar tilt n s and the tensor-to-scalar ratio r, and late-time dark energy equation of state parameters w 0 and w a . In this work, we examine three different physically motivated regimes, considering complete freedom in the parameter α, models inspired by supergravity where α takes on values up to α = 7/3, and Starobinsky inflation (α = 1). We investigate the consistency and constraints imposed by Cosmic Microwave Background measurements from the Planck satellite, B-mode polarization data from the BICEP/Keck collaboration, and low-redshift observations. Additionally, we consider small-scale CMB measurements released by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope, which give results approaching the Harrison– Zel’dovich spectrum (n s ≈ 1). Here α-attractors lead to an improved fit over $\Lambda$CDM. For the large-scale CMB measurements, α ≳ 2 models can provide equally good fits as $\Lambda$CDM

Testing the scalar weak gravity conjecture in no-scale supergravity

We explore possible extensions of the Weak Gravity Conjecture (WGC) to scalar field theories. To avoid charged black hole remnants, the WGC requires the existence of a particle with a mass m ≤ gqM P , with charge q and U(1) gauge coupling g, allowing the decay to shed the black hole charge. Although there is no obvious problem that arises in the absence of a U(1) charge, it has been postulated that gravity must remain the weakest force even when extended to scalar interactions. Quantifying this conjecture may be done by comparing scalar and gravitational amplitudes, or as we advocate here by comparing scattering cross sections. In theories with non-trivial field space geometries, by working out examples with perturbation theory around arbitrary field values and performing tadpole resummations, we argue that the conjecture must be applied only at extrema of the scalar potential (when expressed in locally canonical coordinates). We consider several toy models in the context of no-scale supergravity and also consider examples of inflationary models.

Soft theorems in matrix theory

We show that the Banks-Fischler-Shenker-Susskind matrix model for M-theory obeys the leading and subleading soft theorems expected from eleven-dimensional supergravity. The subleading soft theorem implies the amplitude is Lorentz symmetric. This is argued for general four point amplitudes, but only for restricted kinematics for five and higher point amplitudes.

Axion cogenesis without isocurvature perturbations

Axion rotations can simultaneously explain the dark matter abundance and the baryon asymmetry of the Universe by kinetic misalignment and axiogenesis. We consider a scenario in which the Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking field is as large as the Planck scale during inflation and the axion rotation is initiated by the inflaton-induced potential immediately after the end of inflation. This is a realization of the cogenesis scenario that is free of problems with domain walls and isocurvature perturbations thanks to large explicit Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking at the Planck scale during inflation. The baryon asymmetry can be more efficiently produced by leptoaxiogenesis, in which case the axion mass is predicted to be larger than O⁡(0.1) meV. We also discuss a UV complete model in supersymmetric theories.

Right-handed slepton bulk region for dark matter in generalized no-scale F -SU(5) with effective supernatural supersymmetry

We propose generalized no-scale supergravity, the simplest scenario for effective supernatural supersymmetry, naturally solving the supersymmetry electroweak fine-tuning problem and including natural dark matter. A light right-handed slepton bulk region is realized in F -SU(5) and the phenomenological minimal supersymmetric standard model. The bulk may be beyond the LHC reach, although it can be probed at the 1000-day LUX-ZEPLIN, Future Circular Collider at CERN, Circular Electron-Positron Collider, and Hyper-Kamiokande. On the holographic dual of a symmetry operator at finite temperature

Topological symmetry operators of holographic large 𝑁 CFT 𝐷 ’s are dual to dynamical branes in the gravity dual AdS 𝐷+1 . We use this correspondence to establish a dictionary between thermal expectation values of symmetry operators in the Euclidean CFT 𝐷 and the evaluation of gravitational saddles in the presence of a dynamical brane. Expectation values of 0-form symmetry operators in the CFT 𝐷 are then related to branes wrapped on volume minimizing cycles in the bulk, i.e., the Euclidean continuation of a black hole horizon. We illustrate with some representative examples, including gravity in AdS 3 , duality/triality defects in four-dimensional 𝒩 = 4 super Yang-Mills theory, and the dual of R-symmetry operators probing five-dimensional Bogomol’nyi–Prasad–Sommerfield black holes.

Finite-temperature phase diagram of the Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase matrix model on the lattice

We investigate the thermal phase structure of the Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase matrix model using nonperturbative lattice Monte Carlo calculations. Our main analyses span 3 orders of magnitude in the coupling, involving systems with sizes up to 𝑁𝜏 =24 lattice sites and SU⁡(𝑁) gauge groups with 8 ≤𝑁 ≤16. In addition, we carry out extended checks of discretization artifacts for 𝑁𝜏 ≤128 and gauge group SU(4). We find results for the deconfinement temperature that interpolate between the perturbative prediction at weak coupling and the large-𝑁 dual supergravity calculation at strong coupling. While we confirm that the phase transition is first order for strong coupling, it appears to be continuous for weaker couplings.

Nonrenormalization theorem for $\mathcal{N}$ = (4, 4) interface entropy

We derive a formula for the half-BPS interface entropy between any pair of $\mathcal{N}$ = (4, 4) theories on the same conformal manifold. This generalizes the diastasis formula derived in [1] for $\mathcal{N}$ = (2, 2) theories, which is restricted to the conformal submanifolds generated by either chiral or twisted chiral multiples of $\mathcal{N}$ = (2, 2) supersymmetry. To derive the $\mathcal{N}$ = (4, 4) formula, we use the fact that the conformal manifold of $\mathcal{N}$ = (4, 4) theories is symmetric and quaternionic-Kähler and that its isotropy group contains the SU(2) ⊗ SU(2) external automorphism of the $\mathcal{N}$ = (4, 4) superconformal algebra. As an application of the formula, we prove a supersymmetric non-renormalization theorem, which explains the observation in [2] that the interface entropy for half-BPS Janus solutions in type IIB supergravity on AdS 3 × S 3 × T 4 coincides with the corresponding quantity in their free conformal field limits.

Universality in logarithmic temperature corrections to near-extremal rotating black hole thermodynamics in various dimensions

The low-temperature thermodynamics of near-extremal rotating black holes has recently been revisited to incorporate one-loop contributions that are dominant in this regime. We discuss these quantum corrections to the gravitational path integral for asymptotically Anti de-Sitter black holes in four and five dimensions. In four dimensions we explicitly consider Kerr-AdS 4 , Kerr-Newman-AdS 4 and the rotating black hole in $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 gauged supergravity with two scalars and two electric charges turned on. In five dimensions we explicitly address the asymptotically flat Myers-Perry black hole and the Kerr-AdS5 black hole. In every case we find that tensor modes contribute $\frac{3}{2}$logT Hawking to the low-temperature thermodynamics. We identify the root cause of this universality in two facts: (i) the universal presence of a SL(2, $\mathbb{R}$) subgroup of isometries in the near-horizon geometry and (ii) a set of cancellations in the Lichnerowicz operator. We show that these two conditions hold for near-extremal black holes in asymptotically flat and asymptotically AdS spacetimes of various dimensions.

Living on the edge: a non-perturbative resolution to the negativity of bulk entropies

Lin, Maldacena, Rozenberg, and Shan (LMRS) presented a new information paradox in black hole physics by noticing that the entanglement and Rényi entropies in a two-sided black hole can become negative when the geometry contains a very large number of matter excitations behind the black hole horizon. While originally this puzzle was presented in the context of BPS two-sided black holes in two-dimensional supergravity, the negativity in fact persists for more general two-sided black holes in the presence of a large number of matter excitations. Since the entanglement and Rényi entropies in ordinary quantum systems cannot be negative, resolving this puzzle is a necessary step towards understanding the quantum mechanical description of black holes. In this paper, we explain how to address the entanglement negativity puzzle, both in the original setting discussed by LMRS and in more general non-supersymmetric settings, by summing over all non-perturbative contributions to the gravitational path integral. We then interpret this result from the point of view of a dual matrix integral, which we use to extend our analysis beyond the regime of validity of the genus re-summation performed in the gravitational path integral. In this regime, positivity is rescued by new saddles of the matrix integral, a one-eigenvalue instanton and a two-eigenvalue instanton. Finally, we formulate a similar puzzle and its resolution using random tensor network techniques.
