Asymptotic symmetry algebra of N = 8 supergravity

The asymptotic symmetry algebra of N = 1 supergravity was recently constructed using the well-known two-dimensional celestial conformal field (CFT) theory technique [A. Fotopoulos , ]. In this paper, we extend the construction to the maximally supersymmetric four-dimensional N = 8 supergravity theory in asymptotically flat spacetime and construct the extended asymptotic symmetry algebra, which we call N = 8 s b m s 4 . We use the celestial CFT technique to find the appropriate currents for extensions of N = 8 super-Poincaré and SU ( 8 ) R R-symmetry current algebra on the celestial sphere C S 2 . We generalize the definition of shadow transformations and show that there is infinite dimensional extension of the global SU ( 8 ) R algebra in the theory. Schroedinger operators with the q-ladder symmetry algebras

A class of the one-dimensional Schroedinger operators L with the symmetry algebra LB(+/-) = q(+/-2)B(+/-)L, (B(+),B(-)) = P(sub N)(L), is described. Here B(+/-) are the 'q-ladder' operators and P(sub N)(L) is a polynomial of the order N. Peculiarities of the coherent states of this algebra are briefly discussed.

A symmetry algebra in double-scaled SYK

The double-scaled limit of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model takes the number of fermions and their interaction number to infinity in a coordinated way. In this limit, two entangled copies of the SYK model have a bulk description of sorts known as the “chord Hilbert space”. We analyze a symmetry algebra acting on this Hilbert space, generated by the two Hamiltonians together with a two-sided operator known as the chord number. This algebra is a deformation of the JT gravitational algebra, and it contains a subalgebra that is a deformation of the \mathfrak{sl}_2 𝔰 𝔩 2 near-horizon symmetries. The subalgebra has finite-dimensional unitary representations corresponding to matter moving around in a discrete Einstein-Rosen bridge. In a semiclassical limit the discreteness disappears and the subalgebra simplifies to \mathfrak{sl}_2 𝔰 𝔩 2 , but with a non-standard action on the boundary time coordinate. One can make the action of \mathfrak{sl}_2 𝔰 𝔩 2 algebra more standard at the cost of extending the boundary circle to include some “fake” portions. Such fake portions also accommodate certain subtle states that survive the semi-classical limit, despite oscillating on the scale of discreteness. We discuss applications of this algebra, including sub-maximal chaos, the traversable wormhole protocol, and a two-sided OPE.

Symmetry algebra of a generalized anisotropic harmonic oscillator

It is shown that the symmetry Lie algebra of a quantum system with accidental degeneracy can be obtained by means of the Noether's theorem. The procedure is illustrated by considering a generalized anisotropic two dimensional harmonic oscillator, which can have an infinite set of states with the same energy characterized by an u(1,1) Lie algebra.

Superintegrable systems from block separation of variables and unified derivation of their quadratic algebras

Highlights: • A new method for constructing D-dimensional minimally superintegrable systems. • Superintegrable systems from block coordinate separation of variables. • Unified derivation of quadratic symmetry algebras via gauge transformations. - Abstract: We present a new method for constructing D-dimensional minimally superintegrable systems based on block coordinate separation of variables. We give two new families of superintegrable systems with N (N≤D) singular terms of the partitioned coordinates and involving arbitrary functions. These Hamiltonians generalize the singular oscillator and Coulomb systems. We derive their exact energy spectra via separation of variables. We also obtain the quadratic algebras satisfied by the integrals of motion of these models. We show how the quadratic symmetry algebras can be constructed by novel application of the gauge transformations from those of the non-partitioned cases. We demonstrate that these quadratic algebraic structures display a universal nature to the extent that their forms are independent of the functions in the singular potentials.

Universal corner symmetry and the orbit method for gravity

A universal symmetry algebra organizing the gravitational phase space has been recently found. It corresponds to the subset of diffeomorphisms that become physical at corners – codimension-2 surfaces supporting Noether charges. It applies to both finite distance and asymptotic corners. In this paper, we study this algebra and its representations, via the coadjoint orbit method. We show that generic orbits of the universal algebra split into sub-orbits spanned by finite distance and asymptotic corner symmetries, such that the full universal symmetry algebra gives rise to a unified treatment of corners in a manifold. We then identify the geometric structure that captures these algebraic properties on corners, which is the Atiyah Lie algebroid associated to a principal GL(2,R) $\ltimes$ R 2 -bundle. This structure is suggestive of the existence of a novel quantum gravitational theory which would unitarily glue such geometric structures, with spacetime geometries appearing as semi-classical configurations.

Non-invertible symmetries and LSM-type constraints on a tensor product Hilbert space

We discuss the exact non-invertible Kramers-Wannier symmetry of 1+1d lattice models on a tensor product Hilbert space of qubits. This symmetry is associated with a topological defect and a conserved operator, and the latter can be presented as a matrix product operator. Importantly, unlike its continuum counterpart, the symmetry algebra involves lattice translations. Consequently, it is not described by a fusion category. In the presence of this defect, the symmetry algebra involving parity/time-reversal is realized projectively, which is reminiscent of an anomaly. Different Hamiltonians with the same lattice non-invertible symmetry can flow in their continuum limits to infinitely many different fusion categories (with different Frobenius-Schur indicators), including, as a special case, the Ising CFT. The non-invertible symmetry leads to a constraint similar to that of Lieb-Schultz-Mattis, implying that the system cannot have a unique gapped ground state. It is either in a gapless phase or in a gapped phase with three (or a multiple of three) ground states, associated with the spontaneous breaking of the lattice non-invertible symmetry.

On effective field theories with celestial duals

We show that associativity of the tree-level OPE in a celestial CFT imposes constraints on the coupling constants of the corresponding bulk theory. These constraints are the same as those derived in [9] from the Jacobi identity of the algebra of soft modes. The constrained theories are interesting as apparently well-defined celestial CFTs with a deformed w 1+∞ symmetry algebra. We explicitly work out the ramifications of these constraints on scattering amplitudes involving gluons, gravitons and scalars in these theories. We find that all four-point amplitudes constructible solely from holomorphic or anti-holomorphic three-point amplitudes vanish on the support of these constraints, which implies that all purely holomorphic or purely anti-holomorphic higher-point amplitudes vanish.

Perturbatively exact $w_{1+∞}$ asymptotic symmetry of quantum self-dual gravity

The infinite tower of positive-helicity soft gravitons in any minimally coupled, tree-level, asymptotically flat four-dimensional (4D) gravity was recently shown to generate a w 1+∞ asymptotic symmetry algebra. It is natural to ask whether this classical algebra acquires quantum corrections at loop level. We explore this in quantum self-dual gravity, whose amplitudes acquire known one-loop exact all-plus helicity quantum corrections. We show using collinear splitting formulae that, remarkably, the w 1+∞ algebra persists in quantum self-dual gravity without corrections.

On rational points in CFT moduli spaces

Motivated by the search for rational points in moduli spaces of two-dimensional conformal field theories, we investigate how points with enhanced symmetry algebras are distributed there. We first study the bosonic sigma-model with S 1 target space in detail and uncover hitherto unknown features. We find for instance that the vanishing of the twist gap, though true for the S 1 example, does not automatically follow from enhanced symmetry points being dense in the moduli space. We then explore the supersymmetric sigma-model on K3 by perturbing away from the torus orbifold locus. Though we do not reach a definite conclusion on the distribution of enhanced symmetry points in the K3 moduli space, we make several observations on how chiral currents can emerge and disappear under conformal perturbation theory.

Celestial soft currents at one-loop and their OPEs

Conformally soft operators and their associated soft theorems on the celestial sphere encode the low energy behaviour of bulk scattering amplitudes. They lead to an infinite dimensional symmetry algebra of the celestial CFT at tree-level. In this paper, focusing our attention to Yang-Mills theory, we introduce new operators in the boundary celestial CFT in order to extend the definition of conformally soft currents to include one-loop effects. We then compute their OPEs with other operators in the theory. We also examine new subtleties that arise in defining OPEs of two conformally soft operators. We elucidate the connection between the new operators and loop corrected soft theorems in the bulk. Finally, we conclude by demonstrating how these operators fit into the framework of a logarithmic CFT.

Rindler fluids from gravitational shockwaves

We study a correspondence between gravitational shockwave geometry and its fluid description near a Rindler horizon in Minkowski spacetime. Utilizing the Petrov classification that describes algebraic symmetries for Lorentzian spaces, we establish an explicit mapping between a potential fluid and the shockwave metric perturbation, where the Einstein equation for the shockwave geometry is equivalent to the incompressibility condition of the fluid, augmented by a shockwave source. Then we consider an Ansatz of a stochastic quantum source for the potential fluid, which has the physical interpretation of shockwaves created by vacuum energy fluctuations. Under such circumstance, the Einstein equation, or equivalently, the incompressibility condition for the fluid, becomes a stochastic differential equation. By smearing the quantum source on a stretched horizon in a Lorentz invariant manner with a Planckian width (similarly to the membrane paradigm), we integrate fluctuations near the Rindler horizon to find an accumulated effect of the variance in the round-trip time of a photon traversing the horizon of a causal diamond.

Twisted Supergravity and Koszul Duality: A Case Study in AdS 3

In this note, we study a simplified variant of the familiar holographic duality between supergravity on AdS 3 × S 3 × T 4 and the SCFT (on the moduli space of) the symmetric orbifold theory Sym N (T 4 ) as N → ∞. This variant arises conjecturally from a twist proposed by the first author and Si Li. We recover a number of results concerning protected subsectors of the original duality working directly in the twisted bulk theory. Moreover, we identify the symmetry algebra arising in the N → ∞ limit of the twisted gravitational theory. Further, we emphasize the role of Koszul duality—a ubiquitous mathematical notion to which we provide a friendly introduction—in field theory and string theory. After illustrating the appearance of Koszul duality in the “toy” example of holomorphic Chern-Simons theory, we describe how (a deformation of) Koszul duality relates bulk and boundary operators in our twisted setup, and explain how one can compute algebra OPEs diagrammatically using this notion. Further details, results, and computations will appear in a companion paper.

Scalable learning of potentials to predict time-dependent Hartree–Fock dynamics

We propose a framework to learn the time-dependent Hartree–Fock (TDHF) inter-electronic potential of a molecule from its electron density dynamics. Although the entire TDHF Hamiltonian, including the inter-electronic potential, can be computed from first principles, we use this problem as a testbed to develop strategies that can be applied to learn a priori unknown terms that arise in other methods/approaches to quantum dynamics, e.g., emerging problems such as learning exchange–correlation potentials for time-dependent density functional theory. We develop, train, and test three models of the TDHF inter-electronic potential, each parameterized by a four-index tensor of size up to 60 × 60 × 60 × 60. Two of the models preserve Hermitian symmetry, while one model preserves an eight-fold permutation symmetry that implies Hermitian symmetry. Across seven different molecular systems, we find that accounting for the deeper eight-fold symmetry leads to the best-performing model across three metrics: training efficiency, test set predictive power, and direct comparison of true and learned inter-electronic potentials. All three models, when trained on ensembles of field-free trajectories, generate accurate electron dynamics predictions even in a field-on regime that lies outside the training set. To enable our models to scale to large molecular systems, we derive expressions for Jacobian-vector products that enable iterative, matrix-free training.

Additivity, Haag duality, and non-invertible symmetries

The algebraic approach to quantum field theory focuses on the properties of local algebras, whereas the study of (possibly non-invertible) global symmetries emphasizes global aspects of the theory and spacetime. We study connections between these two perspectives by examining how either of two core algebraic properties — “additivity” or “Haag duality” — is violated in a 1+1D CFT or lattice model restricted to the symmetric sector of a general global symmetry. For the Verlinde symmetry of a bosonic diagonal RCFT, we find that additivity is violated whenever the symmetry algebra contains an invertible element, while Haag duality is violated whenever it contains a non-invertible element. We find similar phenomena for the Kramers-Wannier and Rep(D 8 ) non-invertible symmetries on spin chains.

Analyzing the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm: Ansätze, Symmetries, and Lie Algebras

The quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA) has been proposed as a method to obtain approximate solutions for combinatorial optimization tasks. In this work, we study the underlying algebraic properties of three QAOA ansätze for the maximum-cut problem on connected graphs, while focusing on the generated Lie algebras as well as their invariant subspaces. Specifically, we analyze the standard QAOA ansatz as well as the orbit and multiangle ansätze. We are able to fully characterize the Lie algebras of the multiangle ansatz across arbitrary connected graphs, finding that they only fall into one of just six families. Aside from the cycle and path graphs, the Lie dimensions for every graph are exponentially large in the system size, meaning that multiangle ansätze are extremely prone to exhibiting barren plateaus. Then, a similar quasi-graph-independent Lie-algebraic characterization beyond the multiangle ansatz is impeded as the circuit exhibits additional “hidden” symmetries besides those naturally arising from a certain parity-superselection operator and all automorphisms of the considered graph. Disregarding the “hidden” symmetries, we can upper bound the dimensions of the orbit and the standard Lie algebras, and the dimensions of the associated invariant subspaces are determined via explicit character formulas. To finish, we conjecture that (for most graphs) the standard Lie algebras have only components that are either exponential or that grow, at most, polynomially with the system size. This would imply that the QAOA is either prone to barren plateaus or classically simulable. More generally, our work provides a symmetry framework and tools to analyze any desired variational quantum algorithm.

Majorana chain and Ising model - (non-invertible) translations, anomalies, and emanant symmetries

We study the symmetries of closed Majorana chains in 1+1d, including the translation, fermion parity, spatial parity, and time-reversal symmetries. The algebra of the symmetry operators is realized projectively on the Hilbert space, signaling anomalies on the lattice, and constraining the long-distance behavior. In the special case of the free Hamiltonian (and small deformations thereof), the continuum limit is the 1+1d free Majorana CFT. Its continuum chiral fermion parity (-1)^{F_L} ( − 1 ) F L emanates from the lattice translation symmetry. We find a lattice precursor of its mod 8 ’t Hooft anomaly. Using a Jordan-Wigner transformation, we sum over the spin structures of the lattice model (a procedure known as the GSO projection), while carefully tracking the global symmetries. In the resulting bosonic model of Ising spins, the Majorana translation operator leads to a non-invertible lattice translation symmetry at the critical point. The non-invertible Kramers-Wannier duality operator of the continuum Ising CFT emanates from this non-invertible lattice translation of the transverse-field Ising model.
