Active learning of ternary alloy structures and energies

Abstract Machine learning models with uncertainty quantification have recently emerged as attractive tools to accelerate the navigation of catalyst design spaces in a data-efficient manner. Here, we combine active learning with a dropout graph convolutional network (dGCN) as a surrogate model to explore the complex materials space of high-entropy alloys (HEAs). We train the dGCN on the formation energies of disordered binary alloy structures in the Pd-Pt-Sn ternary alloy system and improve predictions on ternary structures by performing reduced optimization of the formation free energy, the target property that determines HEA stability, over ensembles of ternary structures constructed based on two coordinate systems: (a) a physics-informed ternary composition space, and (b) data-driven coordinates discovered by the Diffusion Maps manifold learning scheme. Both reduced optimization techniques improve predictions of the formation free energy in the ternary alloy space with a significantly reduced number of DFT calculations compared to a high-fidelity model. The physics-based scheme converges to the target property in a manner akin to a depth-first strategy, whereas the data-driven scheme appears more akin to a breadth-first approach. Both sampling schemes, coupled with our acquisition function, successfully exploit a database of DFT-calculated binary alloy structures and energies, augmented with a relatively small number of ternary alloy calculations, to identify stable ternary HEA compositions and structures. This generalized framework can be extended to incorporate more complex bulk and surface structural motifs, and the results demonstrate that significant dimensionality reduction is possible in thermodynamic sampling problems when suitable active learning schemes are employed.

Formation enthalpies of Al–Mn–Pd and the structure of the i-AlMnPd quasicrystal

Abstract This paper reports formation enthalpies of phases in the Al–Mn–Pd ternary alloy system as calculated from first principles using electronic density functional theory. We consider all crystal structures as reported in the assessed phase diagrams of the ternary and its binary alloy subsystems (Al–Mn, Al–Pd, and Mn–Pd), as well as additional reported or hypothetical structures. Icosahedral and decagonal quasicrystalline approximants are among the structures that we predict to be stable, or nearly so. Our results suggest the need for careful experimental reexamination of phase stability in each of the alloy systems, in tandem with further efforts to refine crystallographic and ab-initio structures.

Phase equilibria and microstructure evolution in the Ni-rich region of binary Ni-Ce and ternary Ni-Ce-X (X=Al, Nb, Cr, Ti) systems at 900 °C

The equilibrium compositions of all phases in the Ni-rich region of binary Ni-Ce and ternary Ni-Ce-X (X=Al, Nb, Cr, Ti) systems at 900 °C were determined experimentally through isothermal annealing for up to 500 h and compared with currently available computational thermodynamic descriptions. Additionally, the study examined how adding a third element to the binary system affects the microstructure by analyzing changes in the volume fraction of the intermetallic phase in the eutectic region. It was observed that Nb and Ti addition lowered the intermetallic fraction in the eutectic region while Al and Cr addition did the opposite. The fraction of intermetallic phase in the eutectic region is very important because it contributes to extreme brittleness of these alloys. Also, Al, Nb and Ti addition promoted different precipitates upon annealing when added in sufficient amounts. The collected data on composition and phase equilibria provides crucial information for improving the thermodynamic assessments of the binary and ternary alloy systems.

A Search for Asymmetric Barrier Layers for 1550 nm Al-Free Diode Lasers

A search for materials suitable for implementation of 1.55 µm Al-free diode lasers based on InP with asymmetric barrier (AB) layers is conducted. It is shown that a very high (over 10{sup 6}) suppression ratio of the parasitic electron flux can be achieved using common III–V alloys for the ABs. Hence placing such ABs in the immediate vicinity of the active region should completely suppress the parasitic recombination in the waveguide. Several optimal AB designs are proposed that are based on one of the following alloys: Al-free GaInPSb, ternary AlInAs, or quaternary AlGaInAs with a low Al-content. As an important and beneficial byproduct of utilization of such ABs, an improvement of majority carrier capture into the active region occurs.

Multidimensional thermal analysis of an ultrawide bandgap AlGaN channel high electron mobility transistor

Improvements in radio frequency and power electronics can potentially be realized with ultrawide bandgap materials such as aluminum gallium nitride (AlxGa 1-x N). Multidimensional thermal characterization of an Al 0.30 Ga 0.70 N channel high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) was done using Raman spectroscopy and thermoreflectance thermal imaging to experimentally determine the lateral and vertical steady-state operating temperature profiles. An electrothermal model of the Al 0.30 Ga 0.70 N channel HEMT was developed to validate the experimental results and investigate potential device-level thermal management. While the low thermal conductivity of this III-N ternary alloy system results in more device self-heating at room temperature, the temperature insensitive thermal and electrical output characteristics of Al x Ga 1-x N may open the door for extreme temperature applications.

Short-range order and its impact on the CrCoNi medium-entropy alloy

Traditional metallic alloys are mixtures of elements in which the atoms of minority species tend to be distributed randomly if they are below their solubility limit, or to form secondary phases if they are above it. The concept of multiple-principal-element alloys has recently expanded this view, as these materials are single-phase solid solutions of generally equiatomic mixtures of metallic elements. This group of materials has received much interest owing to their enhanced mechanical properties 1,2,3,4,5 . They are usually called medium-entropy alloys in ternary systems and high-entropy alloys in quaternary or quinary systems, alluding to their high degree of configurational entropy. However, the question has remained as to how random these solid solutions actually are, with the influence of short-range order being suggested in computational simulations but not seen experimentally 6,7 . In this paper we report the observation, using energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy, of structural features attributable to short-range order in the CrCoNi medium-entropy alloy. Increasing amounts of such order give rise to both higher stacking-fault energy and hardness. These findings suggest that the degree of local ordering at the nanometre scale can be tailored through thermomechanical processing, providing a new avenue for tuning the mechanical properties of medium- and high-entropy alloys.

Dry-Sliding Tribological Properties of TiAl Alloys and Ti{sub 2}AlN/TiAl Composites at High Temperature

The dry-sliding tribological properties of TiAl alloy and its composite Ti{sub 2}AlN/TiAl were investigated comparatively in the temperature range of 25-800 °C. The wear test results showed the wear resistance of TiAl alloy and Ti{sub 2}AlN/TiAl composite from 25 to 400 °C was poor, but it improved obviously when temperature was above 600 °C. Also, 15 vol.% incorporation of Ti{sub 2}AlN particles was beneficial to improve the friction and wear properties of TiAl. Protective oxide layer generated on the wear surface of 15 vol.% Ti{sub 2}AlN/TiAl composite from 25 to 400 °C, hence, the wear resistance improved. Ti{sub 2}AlN particles played a load-carrying role and inhabited the delamination of enamel layer effectively when the temperature was above 800 °C. Overall, Ti{sub 2}AlN particles which acted as hard spots changed the state of wear surface and further provided a second phase strengthening effect, which resulted in the difference in tribological behaviors between TiAl alloy and its composite.

Wave-Vector Filtering Effect in a Novel Magnetic Nanostructure with Zero Average Magnetic Field

We report a theoretical investigation on wave-vector filtering (WVF) effect in a magnetic nanostructure, which can be experimentally realized by depositing ferromagnetic (FM) stripes on the surface of GaAs/Al{sub x}Ga{sub 1-x}As heterostructure. An appreciable WVF effect appears in this nanosystem. The WVF efficiency is associated with structural parameters of magnetic nanostructure. Therefore, such a device can be employed as a momentum filter for nanoelectronics device applications.

Approaches for handling high-dimensional cluster expansions of ionic systems

Disordered multicomponent systems attract great interest due to their engineering design flexibility and subsequent rich space of properties. However, detailed characterization of the structure and atomic correlations remains challenging and hinders full navigation of these complex spaces. A lattice cluster expansion is one tool to obtain configurational and energetic resolution. While in theory a cluster expansion can be applied to any system of any dimensionality, the method has primarily been used in binary systems or ternary alloys. Here we apply cluster expansions in high-component ionic systems, setting up the largest cluster expansion ever attempted to our knowledge. In doing so, we address and discuss challenges specific to high-component ionic systems, namely charge state assignments, structural relaxations, and rank-deficient systems. We introduce practical procedures to make the fitting and analysis of complex systems tractable, providing guidance for future computational studies of disordered ionic systems.

Microstructure characterization and thermal stability of TC11/Ti2AlNb joints during thermal exposure

Highlights: • Mechanical properties of TC11/Ti{sub 2}AlNb deteriorate due to coarsening of O and α{sub s}. • Thermal stability of α{sub s} phase is lower than that of O phase during exposure. • A relationship was found between the reduction of area and phase thickness. - Abstract: TC11/Ti{sub 2}AlNb welding joints undergoing hot deformation were thermally exposed at the range of 500–700 °C for 100, 200 and 500 h. In present research, typical microstructures of five different zones of the joints were investigated, fusion zone, two interfaces and two base alloys included. The microstructures of fusion zone, Ti{sub 2}AlNb-based alloy and the interface between them were characterized by the coarsening of O phase during thermal exposure, while those of TC11 alloy and the interface between it and fusion zone featured the coarsening of α{sub s} phase. The transformation from B2 to β and O phase was stifled below 600 °C and Ti{sub 2}AlNb-based alloy thus was verified to be stable at this temperature range. α{sub s} phase was stable during exposure at 500 °C. When exposed above 600 °C, α{sub s} phase coarsened by at least 52% with the extension of holding time. Due to the low thermal stability of α{sub s} phase compared with that of O phase, the fracture position of the samples tested at room temperature moved from fusion zone to TC11 alloy when temperature rose. In spite of different thermal exposure conditions, the samples tested at 300 and 500 °C all fractured at TC11 alloy for the severe coarsening of α{sub s} phase. The decrease of interfacial area resulting from the coarsening of O and α{sub s} phases facilitated the dislocation slipping and the strength of joints thus deteriorated. The mechanical properties of TC11/Ti{sub 2}AlNb joints measured at room temperature, 300 and 500 °C were all correlated with the lamellar thickness of O and α{sub s} phases.

Preparation and Characterization of NdFeB/PrCo{sub 5} Nanocomposite Magnetic Materials

We first developed NdFeB/PrCo{sub 5} nanocomposite magnetic material by high-energy ball milling, and the influence of the different contents of PrCo{sub 5} on the magnetic properties of NdFeB was studied by means of XRD, DSC, and VSM. The results showed that compared with single-phase NdFeB permanent-magnet material, NdFeB/PrCo{sub 5} nanocomposite magnetic material has superior magnetic properties. When the content of PrCo{sub 5} is 10% and the time of ball milling is 10 h, the magnetic properties for NdFeB/PrCo{sub 5} nanocomposite magnetic material is best: coercivity is 13.2 kOe, which increased by 14.8% over pure NdFeB phase. Remanent magnetization is 96.31 emu/g and the saturation magnetization is 132.29 emu/g. The remanence ratio is 0.728.

The Effects of La Doping on the Crystal Structure, Magnetic, and Microwave Absorption Properties of Nd{sub 2}Fe{sub 14}B Compound

The crystal structure, magnetic, and microwave absorption properties of the (Nd{sub 1−x}La{sub x}){sub 2}Fe{sub 14}B system have been investigated. The La{sub 2}Fe{sub 14}B compound was successfully synthesized and refined, giving a tetragonal structure, space group P4{sub 2}/mnm with the Nd{sub 2}Fe{sub 14}B-type structure. The crystal structure parameters of the (Nd{sub 1−x}La{sub x}){sub 2}Fe{sub 14}B compounds were determined by full-profile Rietveld refinements. The results revealed that all intermediate alloys form a continuous solid solution. The normalized lattice parameters of the (Nd{sub 1−x}La{sub x}){sub 2}Fe{sub 14}B compounds increase linearly with an increase of La concentration. Based on the results of DSC measurements and X-ray powder diffraction examinations, the phase diagram of the Nd{sub 2}Fe{sub 14}B-La{sub 2}Fe{sub 14}B system has been constructed. The remanence (M{sub r}) and coercivity (H{sub c}) of (Nd{sub 1−x}La{sub x}){sub 2}Fe{sub 14}B (x = 0.00, 0.10, 0.20, 0.30, and 0.40) gradually decrease. The highest reflection loss is − 29.8, − 27.4, − 24.1, − 18.6, and − 14.2 dB at 9.8, 8.9, 7.5, 6.9, and 6.5 GHz, respectively. The absorption peak shifts toward from higher frequency region to lower frequency region and the absorption bandwidth widens with the increase of the La substitution.

Effect of Annealing on Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy and Low Saturation Magnetization of MgO/Co{sub 2}FeAl/Mo Trilayer Films

In this study, we report our approach to manipulate the strength of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) at oxide/ferromagnetic metal of Heusler alloy (HA) interface by tuning the parameter of annealing temperature. Robust PMA energy density (K{sub eff}) of ∼ 0.43 × 10{sup 6} erg/cm{sup 3} and small saturation magnetization (M{sub s}) as low as ∼ 248 emu/cm{sup 3} have been achieved for MgO/Co{sub 2}FeAl (CFA)/Mo stacks at 400 {sup ∘}C. We identify that PMA energy is thermally stable up to the maximum temperature of 400 {sup ∘}C. Effect of annealing temperature on surface morphology, grain distribution, and surface roughness of the stacks are investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Further, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) study demonstrates that the interfacial oxidation decides the strong PMA property at MgO/Co{sub 2}FeAl interface during the annealing process. This MgO/CFA/Mo trilayer system can be a suitable candidate for the development of low-power consumption, huge-density data storage, high-thermal stability against the annealing temperature, and nonvolatile magnetic memories.

Interface-Induced and Interface-Enhanced Superconductivity

Among the various theoretical mechanisms proposed to reach a higher Tc, the interface mechanism in different forms has been the one most explored, and it provides continual inspiration and hope for realizing the ultimate goal for researchers in the superconductivity field—room-temperature superconductivity. Difficulties do exist, as most of the materials proposed to exhibit the interfacial mechanism are artificially formed heterostructures and are by nature delicate and easily disturbed by strain and change in the stoichiometry at the interface. The discoveries of superconductivity in naturally assembled single crystals of rare earth (R)-doped CaFe2As2 (Ca122) with a Tc up to 49 K and undoped CaFe2As2 with a Tc up to 25 K have opened an alternate route to tackle the problem. The experimental observation has provided the most direct evidence for interface-induced superconductivity in Ca122 to date and possibly in R-doped Ca122. Given the fact that neither chemical doping nor the application of physical pressure has ever induced a Tc higher than 40 K in bulk FeSe, the reports of Tc up to 45–109 K in FeSe/STO thin films demonstrate that FeSe/STO is an ideal system in which to explore interface-enhanced superconductivity. Here we review the above three specific examples of our effort toward superconductors of higher Tc to demonstrate that the interface mechanism may be a promising paradigm to achieve higher Tc.

Kinetic Properties and Half-Metallic Magnetism in Mn{sub 2}YAl Heusler Alloys

The electrical, magnetic, and galvanomagnetic properties of Mn{sub 2}YAl Heusler alloys (Y = Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) were experimentally studied. The temperature dependences of the electrical resistivity were obtained in a wide temperature range of 4.2–1000 K. The field dependences of the magnetoresistivity and the Hall effect were measured at T = 4.2 K in magnetic fields of up to 100 kOe, and the magnetization in fields of up to 70 kOe. The systems under consideration demonstrate strong ferromagnetism or compensated ferrimagnetism and phase transitions with a change in the magnetic structure are possible. The variability of the electronic structure in the series of these alloys, including the states of a half-metallic ferromagnet and a spin gapless semiconductor, is discussed.

Effect of the Boron Content on the Amorphization Process and Magnetic Properties of the Mechanically Alloyed Fe{sub 92−x}Nb{sub 8}B{sub x} Powders

The effect of the B content on the microstructural, structural, and magnetic properties of partially amorphous Fe{sub 92−x}Nb{sub 8}B{sub x} (x = 5, 10, 15, and 20) alloys has been investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, high and low-temperature extraction-type magnetometers. The XRD results reveal the formation of a nanocomposite structure where nanocrystalline bcc α-Fe and Fe{sub 2}B phases are embedded into an amorphous matrix. The FeB boride is observed for higher boron contents (x = 15 and 20), and the crystallite sizes are in the range of 7–24 nm. As the B content increases, the amorphous phase-relative proportion and coercivity increase, whereas the saturation magnetization decreases. An important magnetic hardening occurs by lowering the temperature from 400 to 5 K for x = 20% B. The variation of the Curie temperature can be attributed to the heterogeneity of the amorphous matrix.

Electronic Structure, Elastic, Magnetic, and Optical Properties of Fe{sub 2}MnZ (Z = Si, Ge, and Sn) Full Heusler Alloys: First-Principle Calculations

Investigations of the electronic structure, elastic, magnetic, and optical properties of Fe{sub 2}MnZ (Z = Si, Ge, and Sn) full Heusler alloys show mechanical stability with cubic symmetry in all three alloys. They are elastically anisotropic and Fe{sub 2}MnSi is ductile whereas Fe{sub 2}MnGe and Fe{sub 2}MnSn are brittle in nature. The value of total magnetic moment is 3 μ{sub B} for Fe{sub 2}MnSi and Fe{sub 2}MnGe at their equilibrium lattice constants and follows the Slater–Pauling curve. Fe{sub 2}MnSn possess the largest magnetic moment among the three with a value of 5.73 μ{sub B} at equilibrium lattice constant. Fe{sub 2}MnSi shows half-metallic nature with 100% spin polarization for a wide range of lattice parameters and is useful for spintronics devices. Good optical properties over wide photon energies point to the possible use of these alloys as radiation shielding materials, optical filters, and photo-electronic devices.
