Directional, joule per steradian THz pulses from multi-joule laser irradiation of wires

We report on THz pulses with energy flux exceeding 2.5 J/sr and high directionality, generated from picosecond, joule laser irradiation of microwires. The impact of wire diameter, length, and laser irradiation orientation is explored with the irradiation of 160 μm diameter, 750 μm, sharpened wires at the dull base found to produce the highest energy and shortest wavelength THz pulses among the targets tested. A traveling wave antenna combined with coherent transition radiation model is developed to explain the emission pattern, pulse energy, and spectrum seen.

Compact single-shot electro-optic detection system for THz pulses with femtosecond time resolution at MHz repetition rates

Electro-optical detection has proven to be a valuable technique to study temporal profiles of THz pulses with pulse durations down to femtoseconds. As the Coulomb field around a relativistic electron bunch resembles the current profile, electro-optical detection can be exploited for non-invasive bunch length measurements at accelerators. We have developed a very compact and robust electro-optical detection system based on spectral decoding for single-shot longitudinal bunch profile monitoring at the European X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) for electron bunch lengths down to 200 fs (rms). Apart from the GaP crystal and the corresponding laser optics at the electron beamline, all components are housed in 19 in. chassis for rack mount and remote operation inside the accelerator tunnel. An advanced laser synchronization scheme based on radio-frequency down-conversion has been developed for locking a custom-made Yb-fiber laser to the radio-frequency of the European XFEL accelerator. In order to cope with the high bunch repetition rate of the superconducting accelerator, a novel linear array detector has been employed for spectral measurements of the Yb-fiber laser pulses at frame rates of up to 2.26 MHz. In this paper, we describe all sub-systems of the electro-optical detection system as well as the measurement procedure in detail and discuss the first measurement results of longitudinal bunch profiles of around 400 fs (rms) with an arrival-time jitter of 35 fs (rms).

Inference of joule-class THz radiation sources from microchannel targets driven with hundreds of joule, picosecond lasers is reported. Here, THz sources of this magnitude are useful for nonlinear pumping of matter and for charged-particle acceleration and manipulation. Microchannel targets demonstrate increased laser–THz conversion efficiency compared to planar foil targets, with laser energy to THz energy conversion up to ~0.9% in the best cases.

Generation of nanosecond THz pulses using a high gain ring resonator with a semiconductor switch

A 250 GHz quasi-optical ring resonator consisting of an input coupler and three mirrors has been designed and tested. A low-loss silicon wafer in the ring provides output coupling of the stored power when irradiated by a pulse from a 532 nm laser. The ring created 5.8 ns, 268 mW output power pulses when excited by a 17 mW, 250 GHz continuously operating input source, achieving a power gain of 16. In a fully tuned ring, higher gain is achievable. If the ring was used with a pulsed input source having a pulse length of several times the fill time, the ring could be used as an efficient pulse compressor with similar high gain. The resonator has a wide range of applications, including, at low power, spectroscopy and, at high power, testing of accelerator structures and materials.

Spatiotemporal Structure in Intense THz Pulsed Beams

Optically generated terahertz radiation, with gigavolt per meter (GV/m) electric fields accessible in tabletop experiments, provides a promising source of accelerating gradients for future particle accelerator applications. Manipulation and characterization of radiation is essential for efficiently producing high fields and effectively delivering them to an accelerating structure or interaction region. The talk will cover a method of generating and characterizing high quality and structured terahertz pulsed laser beams for compact particle acceleration.

DC electrical conductivity measurements of warm dense matter using ultrafast THz radiation

We describe measurements of the DC electrical conductivity of warm dense matter using ultrafast terahertz (THz) pulses. THz fields are sufficiently slowly varying that they behave like DC fields on the timescale of electron–electron and electron–ion interactions and hence probe DC-like responses. Using a novel single-shot electro-optic sampling technique, the electrical conductivity of the laser-generated warm dense matter was determined with <1 ps temporal resolution. We present the details of the single-shot THz detection methodology as well as considerations for warm dense matter experiments. We, then, provide proof-of-concept studies on aluminum driven to the warm dense matter regime through isochoric heating and shock compression. Our results indicate a decrease in the conductivity when driven to warm dense matter conditions and provide a platform for future warm dense matter studies.

Three-dimensional reconstruction of THz near-fields from a LiNbO3 optical rectification source

Terahertz (THz) generation by optical rectification in LiNbO3 (LN) is a widely used technique for generating intense THz radiation. The spatiotemporal characterization of THz pulses from these sources is currently limited to far-field methods. While simulations of tilted pulse front THz generation have been published, little work has been done to measure the near-field properties of the THz source. A better understanding of the THz near-field properties will improve optimization of THz generation efficiency, transport, and coupling. We demonstrate a technique for quantitative spatiotemporal characterization of single-cycle strong-field THz pulses with 2-D near-field electro-optic imaging. We have reconstructed the full temporal 3D THz near-field and shown how the phase front can be tailored by controlling the incident pump pulse.

THz Radiation Generation to Enable Internal Magnetic Field Measurement of Burning Plasmas (Final Scientific Report)

A one-year experimental program was performed using the Multi-TeraWatt (MTW) laser at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) to investigate the efficiency and physical process of laser-driven—wire THz generation. This process was evaluated as a potential high-repetition-rate source of powerful THz pulses for use in THz pulsed polarimetry of a moderate-density magnetic-confinement fusion concept developed by TAE. The goal was to develop a source for short pulses in the THz regime (150 μm wavelength) containing 10’s of mJ. The campaign tested the impact of Cu wire diameter (25, 75, 160 μm), length (250 – 750 μm), and laser irradiation orientation on THz production efficiency in comparison to 20-μm thick Cu foils. Of these targets, the 160 µm diameter, 750 µm long wires with sharpened tips and irradiated at the base were found to produce the highest energy and shortest wavelength THz pulses, exceeding 2.5 Joule/sr and meeting the requirements for the polarimetry diagnostic. The brightest THz signal was radiated in the direction of the sharpened wire tip. A combination of two models – a traveling wave antenna combined with coherent transition radiation – describes the emission pattern, pulse energy, and spectrum observed in the experiments.

Carrier-Envelope Phase Control in Terahertz Pulse Generation Using InAs Ribbon Metasurfaces

Generation of broadband terahertz (THz) pulses with variable polarization and carrier-envelope phase can enable the tailoring of THz beam wavefronts for advanced applications in THz imaging and spectroscopy and for strong THz field optics. While metasurfaces composed of deeply subwavelength THz emitters have recently been demonstrated to define the polarization and spatial profile of the generated THz fields, precise phase control or synthesis of THz pulse waveforms remains a challenging problem. Here, we propose and demonstrate metasurfaces composed of indium arsenide (InAs) nanoscale ribbon arrays capable of generating THz pulses with variable carrier-envelope phase. We show that different THz generation mechanisms, each contributing distinct phases, can be activated in the ribbons, enabling carrier-envelope phase control spanning a range of π over a wide band of frequencies (∼1–3 THz). This is achieved solely through the ribbon array geometry using linearly polarized optical excitation of the ribbons. The arrays enable precise control of the THz phase and amplitude, opening the door to advanced structured THz wavefront synthesis using ultrathin dielectric metasurfaces.

Interferometric bunch length measurements of 3 MeV picocoulomb electron beams

We report picosecond bunch length measurements using an interferometric method for a 3 MeV electron beam having bunch charge ranging from 1 to 14 pC. The method senses the single-cycle sub-terahertz (THz) pulse emitted by each electron bunch as coherent transition radiation which, in turn, is analyzed using a Michelson-type interferometer, forming an interferogram that is then processed to yield the nominal electron bunch length. This sub-THz coherent radiation intensity was measured using a quasi-optical detector (QOD) operated at room temperature. This experiment was quite challenging since the divergence angle of the sub-THz pulse emitted by the low-energy electron bunch exceeds ±10°, and its pulse energy at the entrance to the detector was as low as 100 pJ. When compared to a conventional helium-cooled silicon composite bolometer designed for frequencies above 0.5 THz, the QOD provided much better signal-to-noise ratio in the ~80 GHz frequency range, which was critical for the successful measurement of the bunch length.

Ultrafast state-selective tunneling in two-dimensional semiconductors with a phase- and amplitude-controlled THz-scanning tunneling microscope

THz-pulse driven scanning tunneling microscopy (THz-STM) enables access to the ultrafast quantum dynamics of low-dimensional material systems at simultaneous ultrafast temporal and atomic spatial resolution. State-selective tunneling requires precise amplitude and phase control of the THz pulses combined with quantitative near-field waveform characterization. Here, we employ our state-of-the-art THz-STM with multi-MHz repetition rates, efficient THz generation, and precisely tunable THz waveforms to investigate a single sulfur vacancy in monolayer MoS2. We demonstrate that 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are an ideal platform for near-field waveform sampling by THz cross-correlation. Furthermore, we determine the THz voltage via QEV scans, which measure the THz rectified charge Q as a function of THz field amplitude E and dc bias Vdc. Mapping the complex energy landscape of localized states with a resolution down to 0.01 electrons per pulse facilitates state-selective tunneling to the HOMO and LUMO orbitals of a charged sulfur vacancy.

Mechanisms Underlying a Quantum Superposition Microscope Based on THz-Driven Coherent Oscillations in a Two-Level Molecular Sensor

Here we report pump-probe measurements of a hydrogen molecule (H 2 ) in the tunnel junction of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) coupled to ultrashort terahertz (THz) pulses. The coherent oscillation of the THz induced DC tunneling current at a frequency of ~0.5 THz fingerprints the absorption by H 2 as a two-level system (TLS). Two components of the oscillatory signal are observed and point to both photon and field aspects of the THz pulses. A few loosely bound states with similar energies for the upper state of the TLS are evidenced by the coherent revival of oscillatory signal. Furthermore, the comparison of spectroscopic features of H 2 with different tips provides an understanding of the TLS for H 2 .

Dephasingless two-color terahertz generation

A laser pulse composed of a fundamental and an appropriately phased second harmonic can drive a time-dependent current of photoionized electrons that generates broadband THz radiation. Over the propagation distances relevant to many experiments, dispersion causes the relative phase between the harmonics to evolve. This “dephasing” slows the accumulation of THz energy and results in a multi-cycle THz pulse with significant angular dispersion. Here, we introduce a novel optical configuration that compensates the relative phase evolution, allowing for the formation of a half-cycle THz pulse with almost no angular dispersion. The configuration uses the spherical aberration of an axilens to map a prescribed radial phase variation in the near field to a desired longitudinal phase variation in the far field. Simulations that combine this configuration with an ultrashort flying focus demonstrate the formation of a half-cycle THz pulse with a controlled emission angle and 1/4 the angular divergence of the multi-cycle pulse created by a conventional optical configuration.

Second-harmonic generation in zinc blende crystals under combined action of femtosecond optical and strong terahertz fields

The influence of a short intense (with an electric field strength up to 250 kV cm{sup −1}) terahertz (THz) pulse on the generation of second harmonic (SH) of Ti : sapphire laser radiation in crystals of zinc blende type (InAs and GaAs), characterised by nonzero bulk quadratic susceptibility, is investigated. It is experimentally shown for InAs(100) that, in the case of s-polarised first and second harmonics, an application of s-polarised THz field changes significantly the SH signal. The THz field-induced azimuthal dependence of the SH signal is in good agreement with the results of theoretical calculation within a phenomenological approach. The dependence of the SH signal on the delay time between the optical and THz pulses is investigated. This dependence for the GaAs crystal repeats the envelope of the THz pulse intensity, whereas in the case of InAs crystal there is a significant discrepancy, caused by the nonlinear dynamics of strong THz field in InAs. InAs Terahertz Metalens Emitter for Focused Terahertz Beam Generation

Metasurfaces have opened doors to combining multiple photonic functionalities in a single compact device. In particular, the ability to generate short terahertz (THz) pulses with precise wavefront engineering in a single THz metasurface redefined the role metasurfaces can play in THz systems. Here, an InAs metalens emitter which generates and focuses a THz pulse beam is demonstrated using a 130 nm thick InAs metasurface designed as a binary‐phase Fresnel zone plate. The THz beam is focused to a spot of ≈430 μm at 1 THz with a short focal length of 5 mm and large numerical aperture of 0.5. Nanoscale InAs Mie resonators comprising the metasurface enable THz generation with an amplitude as high as 20 times compared to plasmonic THz emitters and several times compared to a 1 mm thick ZnTe crystal. This InAs metasurface emitter provides a new paradigm for designing THz imaging, spectroscopy, and communication systems, where THz beam generation and shaping are performed with a single device without compromising the generation efficiency, while eliminating losses and avoiding limitations of phase matching of conventional nonlinear optics approaches.

A high-power, high-repetition-rate THz source for pump–probe experiments at Linac Coherent Light Source II

Experiments using a THz pump and an X-ray probe at an X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) facility like the Linac Coherent Light Source II (LCLS II) require frequency-tunable (3 to 20 THz), narrow bandwidth (~10%), carrier-envelope-phase-stable THz pulses that produce high fields (>1 MV cm –1 ) at the repetition rate of the X-rays and are well synchronized with them. Herein, a two-bunch scheme to generate THz radiation at LCLS II is studied: the first bunch produces THz radiation in an electromagnet wiggler immediately following the LCLS II undulator that produces X-rays from the second bunch. The initial time delay between the two bunches is optimized to compensate for the path difference in THz transport. The two-bunch beam dynamics, the THz wiggler and radiation are described, as well as the transport system bringing the THz pulses from the wiggler to the experimental hall.

Ultrafast Neuromorphic Dynamics Using Hidden Phases in the Prototype of Relaxor Ferroelectrics

Materials possessing multiple states are promising to emulate synaptic and neuronic behaviors. Their operation frequency, typically in or below the GHz range, however, limits the speed of neuromorphic computing. Ultrafast THz electric field excitation has been employed to induce nonequilibrium states of matter, called hidden phases in oxides. One may wonder if there are systems for which THz pulses can generate neuronic and synaptic behavior, via the creation of hidden phases. Using atomistic simulations, we discover that relaxor ferroelectrics can emulate all the key neuronic and memristive synaptic features. Their occurrence originates from the activation of many hidden phases of polarization order, resulting from the response of nanoregions to THz pulses. We find such phases further possess different dielectric constants, which is also promising for memcapacitor devices.
