A Case Study of the Failure on Apollo 13: Based on TMX-65270, Report of Apollo 13 Review Board

The dramatic journey of the crippled Apollo 13 vehicle has been heavily documented and popularized. Many people know there was an explosion in the service module which caused the vehicle to lose its oxygen supply. Less well known is the set of circumstances which led to the explosion. This paper examines the manufacturing, processing and testing history of oxygen tank #2, detailing the additive effects which caused the oxygen to ignite and to overpressure the tank.

A Fast-Time Simulation Environment for Airborne Merging and Spacing Research

As part of NASA's Distributed Air/Ground Traffic Management (DAG-TM) effort, NASA Langley Research Center is developing concepts and algorithms for merging multiple aircraft arrival streams and precisely spacing aircraft over the runway threshold. An airborne tool has been created for this purpose, called Airborne Merging and Spacing for Terminal Arrivals (AMSTAR). To evaluate the performance of AMSTAR and complement human-in-the-loop experiments, a simulation environment has been developed that enables fast-time studies of AMSTAR operations. The environment is based on TMX, a multiple aircraft desktop simulation program created by the Netherlands National Aerospace Laboratory (NLR). This paper reviews the AMSTAR concept, discusses the integration of the AMSTAR algorithm into TMX and the enhancements added to TMX to support fast-time AMSTAR studies, and presents initial simulation results.

Instabilities excited by an energetic ion beam and electron temperature anisotropy in tandem mirrors

Tandem mirrors are magnetic confinement devices, which have the objective to prevent a leaking out of ions in a central (solenoidal) cell at the end. This is accomplished by making use of an electrostatic potential, which is maintained by a denser plasma in mirror end cells. In the Tandem Mirror Experiment (TMX), Correll et al. (1982) have successfully verified the basic concepts involved in the design of the considered device. However, it was also found that the simple tandem mirror could not be easily scaled to a reactor-size device. Approaches for solving the arising problems were studied, taking into account also the utilization of a thermal barrier. In this connection, Winske et al. (1985) studied the nonlinear development of the instability in a finite beta plasma with isotropic electrons. The present investigation is concerned with an extension of the calculations conducted by Winske et al., giving attention to the parameter regime of the TMX. It is found that three instabilities can occur.

Lightning criteria relative to space shuttles: Currents and electric field intensity in Florida lightning

The measured electric field intensities of 161 lightning strokes in 39 flashes which occurred between 1 and 35 km from an observation point at Kennedy Space Center, Florida during June and July of 1971 have been analyzed to determine the lightning channel currents which produced the fields. In addition, typical channel currents are derived and from these typical electric fields at distances between 0.5 and 100 km are computed and presented. On the basis of the results recommendations are made for changes in the specification of lightning properties relative to space vehicle design as given in NASA TMX-64589 (Daniels, 1971). The small sample of lightning analyzed yielded several peak currents in the 100 kA range. Several current rise-times from zero to peak of 0.5 microsec or faster were found; and the fastest observed current rate-of-rise was near 200 kA/microsec. The various sources of error are discussed.

This bibliography lists 478 documents which relate to all heavier-than-air fixed wing aircraft exclusive of military types and those used for commercial air transport. An exception is the inclusion of commuter transport aircraft types within the general aviation category. Operational Improvements From the In-Trail Procedure in the North Atlantic Organized Track System

This paper explains the computerized batch processing experiment examining the operational impacts of the introduction of Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) equipment and the In-Trail Procedure (ITP) to the North Atlantic Organized Track System (NATOTS). This experiment was conducted using the Traffic Manager (TMX), a desktop simulation capable of simulating airspace environments and aircraft operations. ADS-B equipment can enable the use of new ground and airborne procedures, such as the ITP. The ITP is among the first of these new procedures, which will make use of improved situation awareness in the local surrounding airspace of ADS-B equipped aircraft to enable more efficient oceanic flight level changes. The data collected were analyzed with respect to multiple operationally relevant parameters including fuel burn, request approval rates, and the distribution of fuel savings. This experiment showed that through the use of ADS-B or ADS-B and the ITP that operational improvements and benefits could be achieved.

Simulation of a Representative Future Trajectory-Based Operations Environment

Trajectory-Based Operations in the National Airspace System is a key aspect of advanced air traffic management research. Trajectory-Based Operations focuses on modernizing the current operating paradigm to increase efficiency, predictability, resilience, and flexibility while migrating toward greater operational autonomy across the airspace. Research conducted at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration supports the transition from current airspace operations to Trajectory-Based Operations targeting a 2035-2045 implementation timeframe. Simulation scenarios that demonstrate a representative Trajectory-Based Operations environment in that timeframe, and enable the evaluation of advanced airborne tools such as strategic airborne trajectory management services, are necessary to support this research effort. This report describes characteristics and assumptions made about the future operating environment that were applied to a scenario development methodology to study a representative 2040 Trajectory-Based Operations environment in a simulation use case. This report also includes descriptions of the study design and analysis approach, discussion of the simulation results, and application of these scenarios to future research activities.
