Analyzing Trip Chaining Behavior in New York State Using 2009 and 2017 National Household Travel Survey

Trip chaining, defined as the sequential linking of trips by individuals throughout a given day, provides critical insights into daily mobility patterns and activity sequencing. Understanding these patterns has significant implications for transportation demand forecasting, congestion management, and local economic activity. This analysis examines trip chaining behaviors in New York State (NYS) for the years 2009 and 2017 and compares the Middle Atlantic Census Division with other U.S. regions in 2022, utilizing data from the National Household Travel Survey (NHTS). Through demographic, geographic, and temporal analysis, this study characterizes how populations organize travel for work, personal errands, and social activities, providing empirical evidence of evolving trip chaining behaviors to inform transportation planning strategies.

Are Baby Boomers' Non-Work Trip-Making Behavior Different than Millennials? Lessons Learned from NHTS Data

This paper presents a comparison between Millennials' and Baby Boomers' non-work travel behaviors using data from the 2017 National Household Travel Survey. Bootstrapped segmented ordered logit models are employed to capture the variability in travel preferences and trip frequency across these generational groups, providing more robust insights into their non-work travel. Millennials, particularly those who work from home, are found to have a negative association with higher non-work trip frequency, whereas Baby Boomers have a positive association with higher non-work trip frequency. The model results show that female Millennials who are heads of households are more likely to make non-work trips but less likely when living in urban areas. Ride sharing among Baby Boomers shows a higher association with non-work travel compared to Millennials. These insights could have implications for travel demand management, as shifting travel patterns necessitate adjustments in infrastructure investments and management strategies to support effective long-term transportation planning.

A High-Fidelity Model of the Peach Bottom 2 Turbine-Trip Benchmark Using VERA

This work presents a high-fidelity simulation of the Peach Bottom turbine trip (PBTT) benchmark using the Virtual Environment for Reactor Applications (VERA), a multiphysics reactor modeling tool developed by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Consortium for Advanced Simulation of Light Water Reactors energy innovation hub. The PBTT benchmark, based on a 1977 transient event at the end of cycle 2 in a General Electric Type-4 boiling water reactor (BWR), is a critical test case for validating core physics models with thermal feedback during rapid reactivity events. VERA was employed to perform end-to-end, pin-resolved simulations from conditions at the beginning of cycle 1 through the turbine-trip transient, incorporating detailed neutron transport, fuel depletion, and subchannel thermal hydraulics. The simulation reproduced key benchmark observables with high accuracy: the peak power excursion occurred at 0.75 s, matching the scram time and closely aligning with the benchmark average of 0.742 s; the simulated maximum power spike was approximately 7600 MW, which is within 3% of the benchmark average of 7400 MW; and void-collapse dynamics were consistent with benchmark expectations. Reactivity predictions during cycles 1 and 2 remained within 1500 pcm and 400 pcm of criticality, respectively. These results confirm VERA’s ability to model complex coupled neutronic and thermal hydraulic behavior in a BWR turbine-trip transient, which will support its use in future studies of modeling dryout, fuel performance, and uncertainty quantification for transients of this type.

2003 Interstate 595 Vehicle Trip-Length Study

# 2003 Interstate 595 Vehicle Trip-Length Study The 2003 Vehicle Trip-Length Study focused on Interstate 595 between Davie Road and University Drive in Florida. Survey participants answered questions about their trip's origin and destination—including the type of location such as work, home, store, etc.—the on- and off-ramps used, how many people were in the car, and the type of vehicle. The survey also collected household demographic data such as annual household income, available vehicles, the number of people living in their household, and the number of workers in their household above the age of 16. It also asked if they would use proposed bus-only lanes or train service along the corridor, if available. ## Data Collection Agency The survey was conducted by and for the Florida Department of Transportation. ## Survey Methodology The survey was conducted via mail and online in March 2003. ## Survey Records, Data, and Documentation Survey records include 7,917 participants. Origin and destination locations include street addresses, nearest intersections or landmarks, city, state, zip code, and latitude/longitude.

Investigating the Vulnerabilities of the Direct Transfer Trip Scheme for Network Protector Units in the Secondary Networks of Electric Power Distribution Grids

Network protector units (NPUs) are crucial parts of the protection of secondary networks to effectively isolate faults occurring on the primary feeders. When a fault occurs on the primary feeder, there is a path of the fault current going through the service transformers that causes a negative flow of current on the NPU connected to the faulted feeder. Conventionally, NPUs rely on the direction of current with respect to the voltage to detect faults and make a correct trip decision. However, the conventional NPU logic does not allow the reverse power flow caused by distributed energy resources installed on secondary networks. The communication-assisted direct transfer trip logic for NPUs can be used to address this challenge. However, the communication-assisted scheme is exposed to some vulnerabilities arising from the disruption or corruption of the communicated data that can endanger the reliable operation of NPUs. This paper evaluates the impact of the malfunction of the communication system on the operation of communication-assisted NPU logic. To this end, the impact of packet modification and denial-of-service cyberattacks on the communication-assisted scheme are evaluated. The evaluation was performed using a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) co-simulation testbed that includes both real-time power system and communication network digital simulators. This paper evaluates the impact of the cyberattacks for different fault scenarios and provides a list of recommendations to improve the reliability of communication-assisted NPU protection.

A Large Language Model for Determining Partial Tripping of Distributed Energy Resources

Knowing the status of individual distributed energy resources, i.e., being tripped or not, after a contingency can inform the development of an aggregated DER model. Here, this letter presents a large language model application to determine the partial tripping of distributed energy resources depending on the types, locations, and duration of faults in the transmission network. The large language model, or more specifically BERT-based approach can streamline the fault information into tokenized input, which not only reduces the complexity of the machine learning model but also demonstrates a robust performance with only limited data sets.

EVI-RoadTrip™: Electric Vehicle Infrastructure for Road Trips [SWR-22-17]

The EVI-RoadTrip™ tool offers high-resolution refueling network design and analysis to inform electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure development for road trips or long-distance travels. EVI-RoadTrip helps infrastructure planners, analysts, and decision makers evaluate EV energy consumption and corresponding charging demands along the routes-between origin and destination. It considers the projected location and characteristics of charging stations, potential electric grid impacts, and required infrastructure improvements. Strategically located charging stations for long-distance travel are critical to enabling the widespread adoption of EVs by allowing them to travel further beyond city or town boundaries. Sophisticated analysis and planning can identify the points (e.g., corridors) that may require increased availability of EV charging stations to support electrified road trips.
