TSF Instrumentation Calibration Plan

This document describes the process by which the Thermo-Physics Facilities Branch, Code TSF, implements APR 8730.1, "Metrology/Calibration" and defines the responsibilities and requirements for periodic calibration of IM&TE used in branch facilities for data product and safety-critical measurements.

The ORNL-SNAP shielding program

The effort in the ORNL-SNAP shielding program is directed toward the development and verification of computer codes using numerical solutions to the transport equation for the design of optimized radiation shields for SNAP power systems. A brief discussion is given for the major areas of the SNAP shielding program, which are cross-section development, transport code development, and integral experiments. Detailed results are presented for the integral experiments utilizing the TSF-SNAP reactor. Calculated results are compared with experiments for neutron and gamma-ray spectra from the bare reactor and as transmitted through slab shields.

Configuration and Data Management Plan for the Thermophysics Facilities

This document establishes the Configuration and Data Management Plan for the Thermophysics Facilities Branch (TSF) and describes the implementation of the plan within the organization. Its intent is to control and document changes to facility hardware, software, and facility operating procedures; to control changes to Quality System documents; to ensure that all documents and drawings are current; and to provide for quick retrieval of facility information and documentation while safeguarding original records and documents.

Entry Systems and Vehicle Development Branch (Code TSS)

- TSS was established in 2009 to work with discipline-oriented branches (TSA, TSM, TSF) and provide a leadership approach for sub-system design and hardware components that comprise entry systems. - Currently, branch comprises 11 civil servants and 11 contractors. - 19 NASA Honor Awards in Exceptional Service (2), Achievement (2), Engineering Achievement (5), Early Career Achievement (5), and Outstanding Leadership (5). - In the last decade, TSS has built up core competencies that enable the branch to deliver end-to-end entry systems and vehicle development capabilities.

Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory Mission (GRAIL) Orbit Determination

Launched on 10 September 2011 from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, the twin-spacecraft Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) has the primary mission objective of generating a lunar gravity map with an unprecedented resolution via the Ka-band Lunar Gravity Ranging System (LGRS). After successfully executing nearly 30 maneuvers on their six-month journey, Ebb and Flow (aka GRAIL-A and GRAIL-B) established the most stringent planetary formation orbit on 1 March 2012 of approximately 30 km x 90 km in orbit size. This paper describes the orbit determination (OD) filter configurations, analyses, and results during the Trans-Lunar Cruise, Orbit Period Reduction, and Transition to Science Formation phases. The maneuver reconstruction strategies and their performance will also be discussed, as well as the navigation requirements, major dynamic models, and navigation challenges. GRAIL is the first mission to generate a full high-resolution gravity field of the only natural satellite of the Earth. It not only enables scientists to understand the detailed structure of the Moon but also further extends their knowledge of the evolutionary histories of the rocky inner planets. Robust and successful navigation was the key to making this a reality.
