Improved modified turnstile antenna

Improved antenna design embodies the principles of turnstiling, broadbanding, and delta dipole matching. Antenna is useful in commercial broadcast applications.

Flared-cone turnstile antenna

Antenna could be used in any application where increased ultrahigh frequency beamwidth is desired. Possible applications include aircraft, communication links, ground omniranges, and satellites. It is also possible that antenna could be adapted for use in television transmission and receiving.

Turnstile slot antenna

A turnstile slot antenna is disclosed, the antenna being for and integral with a spacecraft having a substantially cylindrical body portion. The antenna comprises a circumferential slot about the periphery of the spacecraft body portion with an annular wave guide cavity defining a radial transmission line disposed within the spacecraft body portion behind and in communication with the circumferential slot. Feed stubs and associated transmission apparatus are provided to excite the annular cavity in quadrature phase such that an omnidirectional, circularly polarized, rotating radiation pattern is generated. The antenna of the instant invention has utility both as a transmitting and receiving device, and ensures continuous telemetry and command coverage with the spacecraft.

Wide-angle, circularly polarized, omnidirectional-array antenna

Modified conventional turnstile antenna features bifoliate pattern with relatively high gain and good circularity over solid area enclosed by the 0.26 and 1.31 radian angles of elevation. These antennas are intended for high altitude balloon use, their permissible weight is restricted to one pound.

Vehicle Tracking System using Nanotechnology Satellites and Tags

This paper describes a joint project to design, develop, and deploy a satellite based tracking system incorporating micro-nanotechnology components. The system consists of a constellation of 'nanosats', a satellite command station and data collection sites, and a large number of low-cost electronic 'tags'. Both government and commercial applications are envisioned for the satellite based tracking system. The projected low price for the tracking service is made possible by the lightweight nanosats and inexpensive electronic tags which use high production volume single chip transceivers and microprocessor devices. The nanosat consists of a five inch aluminum cube with body mounted solar panels (GaAs solar cells) on all six faces. A UHF turnstile antenna and a simple, spring release mechanism complete the external configuration of the spacecraft.

GPS antenna designs

Application of the current GPS NAVSTAR system to civilian service requires that a right hand, circularly polarized, -160 dBW spread spectrum signal be received from an orbiting satellite, where the antenna environment is also moving. This presents a design challenge when inexpensive antennas are desired. The intent of this survey is to provide information on the antennas mentioned and to construct and test prototypes to determine whether the choice made by the industry, the quadrifilar helix, is the best. The helix antenna is currently the low cost standard for GPS. Prototype versions were constructed using 12 gauge wire and subminiature coaxial hardline. The constructed antennas were tested using a signal generator and a reference turnstile. A spectrum analyzer was used to measure the level of the received signal.
