Coupled Multiphysics Primary Loop Simulations of the Mk1-FHR in the Virtual Test Bed

To support advanced reactor demonstrations, the Virtual Test Bed (VTB) [1] repository hosts a wide range of challenge problems for showcasing modeling and simulation capabil- ities in support of advanced reactor demonstrations. This document presents a coupled multiphysics model of the Mark 1 pebble-bed fluoride-salt-cooled high-temperature reactor (PB-FHR). The analysis leverages NEAMS tools (Griffin [2], SAM [3], Pronghorn [4], and the MOOSE [5] heat con- duction module) for core neutronics, thermal hydraulics of the core and primary loop, and multiscale fuel performance simulations. The analysis was entirely created by coupling standalone simulations of the reactor that were previously available on the VTB. All input files and documentation de- veloped for this example are available on the VTB website: mooseframework.inl.gov/ virtual_test_bed/ . This model was featured in the National Reactor Innovation Cen- ter Tech Talk presented in December 2021.

An AI-Based 3D Bat Movement Tracking System at Wind Energy Facilities Using Multi-Thermal Video Cameras

The talk at the NAWEA Wind Tech 2024 conference discusses how to leverage the potential of real-time thermal-imaging methodologies in quantifying nocturnal bat activities at wind turbines, using 3D computer vision techniques within a deep learning framework. This innovation enables the automatic detection and classification of bats, birds, and insects in thermal-imaging videos captured at wind turbine sites, facilitating efficient and accurate data analysis for enhanced understanding and mitigation of bat-wind turbine interactions.

Supply Chain for Energy Technologies

Understanding manufacturing cost implications of technologies is critical to aid adoption of next-generation energy solutions. It is important to understand not only of the manufacturing costs and value-add along the supply chain, but also gain understanding of manufacturing location decisions. By identifying a technology's competitive strengths and weaknesses, analyses give researchers and program decision makers the data and insights needed to create strategies and plans that better promote U.S. economic growth and pursue R&D activities that have the greatest long-term potential to yield significant energy savings for U.S. consumers. In this talk, we present examples of analysis from a variety of energy technologies to demonstrate how manufacturing cost analysis can be used to answer specific policy or research questions. In addition, we present case studies showing the importance of understanding trade flow, manufacturing locations, and capacity and utilization to inform economic growth and potential for technology adoption.
