THERMS Technology Commercialization Fund Final Report

The technology commercialization fund assisted with the design and development of an intermediate scale packed be thermal energy storage system. Presented in this final report is the design, testing, and modeling of a 100 kWh th radial packed-bed. Air is used as a heat transfer fluid and 3/8” pea gravel is used as the storage medium. Testing has demonstrated the formation of a thermocline within the packed-bed. An air charging temperature of 450 °C was achieved resulting in a charging power of 26.5 kWh th . The radial packed-bed was charged for 5 hours and discharged for 5 hours. Minimal temperature variation was observed at the bottom, middle, and top axial locations of the radial packed-bed which suggests that buoyancy and hydrodynamics in the injection well had a minimal effect on the uniformity of air flow through the bed during charging and discharging. This indicates that the forced convection in a radial direction is dominating the flow regime compared to the buoyancy. The findings of this study suggest an increased air duct diameter through the air heater will increase the charging temperature and increase air mass flow through the system. Increased mass flow through the packed-bed is hypothesized to shorten the thermocline length. Modeled and measured results are compared, and it is here determined that a more comprehensive CFD model will aid in the understanding of air flow and thermocline evolution within the packed-bed.

PACT Center: Perovskite PV Accelerator for Commercializing Technologies (Final Technical Report)

The Perovskite PV Accelerator for Commercializing Technologies (PACT) center was established in July 2021 as a national resource to accelerate the commercialization of perovskite photovoltaic (PV) technology in the United States. Since its inception, PACT has been led by Sandia National Laboratories (Sandia) in partnership with the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR), formerly known as NREL. From FY20-FY23, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), CFV Labs, Black & Veatch (B&V), and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) were part of the project team. LANL brought expertise in perovskite PV device designs and processing, CFV Labs (now GroundWork Renewables) provided initial indoor and outdoor measurement hardware technology, B&V led the initial effort on perovskite PV bankability, and EPRI worked on reviewing testing standards, identifying commercialization gaps, and helping to run PACT’s Industry Advisory Board, a group including representatives from commercial testing labs, independent engineering firms, insurance companies, state regulators, and electric utilities. To source perovskite PV module samples, PACT contracted with the University of North Carolina (UNC), the University of Toledo, the University of Washington, and SLAC/Stanford University to provide a steady stream of research-grade perovskite mini modules, enabling protocol development in advance of commercial module availability. The project period ran from July 1, 2021, through December 31, 2025, including a No Cost Extension. Starting in FY25, the project was continued as a Core Capability in the Lab Call portfolio and continues at a reduced budget with only Sandia and NLR as funded recipients. Notably, starting in FY25 PACT expanded its scope beyond MHP modules to accept all emerging PV mini module technologies for testing, including organic PV (OPV) and all-thin-film tandems, with the aim of supporting commercialization across the broader emerging PV ecosystem. With this change in scope the program was renamed the PV Accelerator for Commercializing Technologies, dropping perovskite from the name.

Energy Technology Commercialization and Entrepreneurship: Insights From the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Technology Transitions 2024 Energy Technology University Prize Faculty Track

The Energy Technology University Prize (EnergyTech UP) was established in 2022 with the goal of challenging student teams to develop impactful business plans for energy technologies of their choosing. EnergyTech UP is part of the The American Made Challenges program portfolio, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. EnergyTech UP is specifically funded by the Department of Energy's Office of Technology Transfer (OTT) and is administrated by staff at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). Since its inception, the annual prize has attracted applications from approximately 1,948 students across nearly every U.S. state and territory, awarding over $1 million in funds to student teams. In 2024, the prize expanded to include a Faculty Track, which invited faculty members from degree-granting institutions across the U.S. to design entrepreneurship-based curricula or educational activities. This new track aims to foster innovation in energy entrepreneurship education by leveraging the expertise of faculty to create robust, practical, and inclusive learning experiences. This report summarizes the themes, strategies and impacts identified in proposals from EnergyTech UP's inaugural Faculty Track. Our primary data for organizing insights are the Faculty Track applications themselves. This evaluation of 2024 EnergyTech UP Faculty Track applications aims to support future EnergyTech UP Faculty Track applicants as well as others who are interested in promoting, developing, and/or implementing educational activities that focus on energy commercialization and entrepreneurship at their institutions. By presenting insights from 2024 entries to the Faculty Track, we hope to contribute to a growing inventory of open-source curriculum development resources and provide materials to facilitate the growth of similar programs at a variety of collegiate institutions.

Sandia and Ditch Witch Technology Commercialization Fund Integral Motor and Percussive Hammer

This report captures the results of development and testing of a integral downhole motor and percussive hammer used for drilling in near-surface hard rock formations. The work was funded through the DOE Office of Technology Transitions Technology Commercialization Fund. It was a collaboration between Sandia National Labs and The Charles Machine Works (aka Ditch Witch). In the collaboration, Sandia developed a pneumatic motor derived from an indexing tool used in other drilling applications, and Ditch Witch developed the bearing pack tied to the output shaft of the motor as well as the angled beacon housing used for directional control.
