ThAu 2 – , ThAu 2 O – , and ThAuOH – anions: Photoelectron spectroscopic and theoretical characterization

The thorium–gold negative ions ThAu 2 – , ThAu 2 O – , and ThAuOH – have been observed and experimentally characterized by anion photoelectron spectroscopy. These experiments are accompanied by extensive ab initio electronic structure calculations using a relativistic composite methodology based primarily on coupled cluster singles and doubles with perturbative triples calculations. The theoretical electron affinities (EAs) at 0 K agree with the experimental adiabatic EAs to within 0.02 eV for all species. Two separate isomers were located in the calculations for ThAuOH – , and detachment from both of these appears to be present in the photoelectron spectrum. Excited electronic states of the neutral molecules are reported at the equation of motion-coupled cluster singles and doubles level of theory. Atomization energies and heats of formation are also calculated for each neutral species and have expected uncertainties of 3 and 4 kcal/mol, respectively. The σ bonds between Th and Au are determined by natural bond orbital analysis to consist of predominately sd hybrids on Th bonding with the Au 6s orbital. In order to investigate the correspondence between the bonding in Th–Au and Th–F molecules, a limited number of calculations were also carried out on most of the F-analogs of this study. These results demonstrate that Au does behave like F in these cases, although the Th–F σ bonds are much more ionic compared to Th–Au. This results in an EA for ThF 2 that is 10 kcal/mol smaller than that of ThAu 2 . The EA values for the Th(IV) species, i.e., ThX 2 O and ThXOH, only differed, however, by 3–4 kcal/mol.

Materials Data on ThAu by Materials Project

ThAu crystallizes in the orthorhombic Cmcm space group. The structure is three-dimensional. Th is bonded in a 7-coordinate geometry to seven equivalent Au atoms. There are a spread of Th–Au bond distances ranging from 3.12–3.32 Å. Au is bonded in a 9-coordinate geometry to seven equivalent Th and two equivalent Au atoms. Both Au–Au bond lengths are 2.93 Å.

Systems analysis of the space shuttle

Developments in communications systems, computer systems, and power distribution systems for the space shuttle are described. The use of high speed delta modulation for bit rate compression in the transmission of television signals is discussed. Simultaneous Multiprocessor Organization, an approach to computer organization, is presented. Methods of computer simulation and automatic malfunction detection for the shuttle power distribution system are also described.

Adaptive and learning control of large space structures

The paper describes the adaptive learning system for space operations which assumes that structural testing can be conducted during deployment and assembly. Simulation results using the solar electric propulsion array and a novel remote sensor are presented; they involve faster scan television coverage of the motions of the array from four cameras on the corners of the Space Shuttle payload bay. The description of the simulation, the filtering algorithm for processing the TV data, the parameter extraction algorithm, and the simulation results are presented.

On-line structural parameter identification

Algorithms are presented for on-line parameter identification of structural dynamic systems. As an example, they are used to calculate the parameters of a modal model of a flexible beam. The algorithms are tested using hardware consisting of a 12 ft. beam with four voice coil actuators and nine noncontacting displacement sensors. They are programmed in a CDC Cyber 175 digital computer which provides input command signals for the actuators, reads the sensor data, and processes the algorithm to calculate consistent estimates of the modal parameters of the beam. Experimental results are compared with those of simulation analysis.

Adaptive/learning control of large space structures - System identification techniques

Techniques developed for the control of aircraft under changing operating conditions are used to develop a learning control system structure for a multi-configuration, flexible space vehicle. A configuration identification subsystem that is to be used with a learning algorithm and a memory and control process subsystem is developed. Adaptive gain adjustments can be achieved by this learning approach without prestoring of large blocks of parameter data and without dither signal inputs which will be suppressed during operations for which they are not compatible. The Space Shuttle Solar Electric Propulsion (SEP) experiment is used as a sample problem for the testing of adaptive/learning control system algorithms.

Algorithms for on-line parameter and mode shape estimation

Algorithms are presented for on-line parameter and mode-shape estimation. The approach used is based upon a modal decomposition of the dynamic response of the flexible structure and is designed to make use of the parallel processing features of modern minicomputers. Satisfactory performance of the parallel structure identification technique used can be achieved only when the approximation functions noted correspond to the natural modes of the flexible structure. The work summarized here presents a technique for estimating both mode shapes and modal parameters.

Least-squares sequential parameter and state estimation for large space structures

This paper presents the formulation of simultaneous state and parameter estimation problems for flexible structures in terms of least-squares minimization problems. The approach combines an on-line order determination algorithm, with least-squares algorithms for finding estimates of modal approximation functions, modal amplitudes, and modal parameters. The approach combines previous results on separable nonlinear least squares estimation with a regression analysis formulation of the state estimation problem. The technique makes use of sequential Householder transformations. This allows for sequential accumulation of matrices required during the identification process. The technique is used to identify the modal prameters of a flexible beam.

A Nonlinear Dual-Adaptive Control Strategy for Identification and Control of Flexible Structures

A technique is presented for obtaining a control law to regulate the modal dynamics and identify the modal parameters of a flexible structure. The method is based on using a min-max performance index to derive a control law which may be considered to be a best compromise between optimum one step control and identification inputs. Features of the approach are demonstrated by a computer simulation of the controlled modal response of a flexible beam.

An adaptive learning control system for large flexible structures

The objective of the research has been to study the design of adaptive/learning control systems for the control of large flexible structures. In the first activity an adaptive/learning control methodology for flexible space structures was investigated. The approach was based on using a modal model of the flexible structure dynamics and an output-error identification scheme to identify modal parameters. In the second activity, a least-squares identification scheme was proposed for estimating both modal parameters and modal-to-actuator and modal-to-sensor shape functions. The technique was applied to experimental data obtained from the NASA Langley beam experiment. In the third activity, a separable nonlinear least-squares approach was developed for estimating the number of excited modes, shape functions, modal parameters, and modal amplitude and velocity time functions for a flexible structure. In the final research activity, a dual-adaptive control strategy was developed for regulating the modal dynamics and identifying modal parameters of a flexible structure. A min-max approach was used for finding an input to provide modal parameter identification while not exceeding reasonable bounds on modal displacement.
