Synthesis of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythuophene) derivatives using three-armed conjugated cross-linker and its thermoelectric properties

Conducting polymer based thermoelectric systems are very effective at harvesting electricity from waste heat with low-temperature gradients relative to environmental temperature. However, although various studies concerning the doping effect exist, there are insufficient reports on the effect of the change in polymer chain structure on the thermoelectric properties. Here we demonstrate different poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)-derivative chain structures (such as linear, two-dimensional, co-polymer), by varying the amount of three-armed conjugated cross-linker (1,3,5-tri(2-thienyl)-benzene (TTB)). Further, at a small amount of TTB addition (until 0.5 mM), the electrochemical charge transport of the PEDOT films increased without shift of the UV–Vis absorbing property. However, from higher than 0.5 mM TTB, electrochemical charge transport decreased with blue shift of the UV–Vis absorbing curve. Moreover, the power factor of the PEDOT-derivative films without TTB to a small amount of TTB (0.5 mM) was improved from (27.03 to 49.43) µWm -1 K -2 , and at higher than 0.5 mM TTB concentration, was diminished, respectively, because a small amount of TTB enhanced the π–π interaction of the polymer chains without disrupting the conjugation, while excess TTB molecules blocked conjugation of the polymer.

Thermoelectric properties of BiSbTe-type alloys prepared by chill-casting and cryo-milling

The thermoelectric properties of Bi x Sb 1-x Te 3 processed through milling have been extensively studied with varied results that needs to be rationalized. Since cryo-milling is a relatively cleaner milling process compared to other milling processes, in this study we explore this technique to reduce the particle size prior to compaction to get an insight into the thermoelectric properties. We first report the results of cryomilled BiSbTe 3 compacted by spark plasmas sintering (SPS) process and show that milling leads to a change in transport behavior from ‘p’ to ‘n’ type similar to that reported for Bi 2 Te 3 . It is shown that the defects induced by milling is responsible for this change in materials behavior. We further study the effect of change in Bi to Sb ratio and excess tellurium on the thermoelectric properties when processed through cryo-milling as well as casting using a chilled copper block. Excess tellurium leads to a microstructure containing a fraction of layered eutectic that gets further fragmented during cryo-milling. Although the Seebeck coefficient does not change significantly, reflecting the cleanliness of the process, the thermal conductivity changes during hot compaction leading to an improvement of ZT. However, a comparison of all the reported results does not reveal any systematics in thermoelectric properties reflecting the difficulties with these materials.

Enhanced Thermoelectric Properties of Heavy-fermion Compounds $\text{Yb}_x\text{Ce}_y\text{Sm}_z\text{Ir}_2\text{Zn}_{20}$ $(x+y+z=1)$

Herein, thermoelectric materials hold tremendous promise for advances in fundamental science and practical ap- plications, particularly for robust electricity generation in extreme and remote environments. Despite this, for most materials the energy conversion efficiency is limited by the proportionality between the electrical and thermal conductivities and small values of the Seebeck coefficient for metals. It was previously reported that the heavy-fermion compound $\text{YbIr}_2$ $\text{Zn}_{20}$ exhibits large Seebeck coefficient and thermoelectric figure of merit $ZT$ at 35 K. This behavior is primarily associated with strong hybridization between the $f$- and conduction electron states. Here, we seek to improve the thermoelectric properties through chemical substitution on the Yb site using Ce and Sm. By surveying different levels of substitution, we find that the thermoelectric properties vary strongly with the $f$-element ratio. This confirms that electronic hybridization dominates the thermoelectric properties and clarifies directions for optimizing these materials for applications. We also investigate the impact of the disorder on the thermal conductivity, where we find only weak variation with lanthanide content.

Single crystal growth and thermoelectric properties of Nowotny chimney-ladder compound Fe 2 Ge 3

Fe 2 Ge 3 with an incommensurate Nowotny chimney-ladder (NCL) structure is a promising material for thermoelectric applications due to its low thermal conductivity. Previous experimental studies on Fe 2 Ge 3 have mainly focused on polycrystalline samples, resulting in a limited understanding of the material's intrinsic thermoelectric properties and the underlying causes of its low thermal conductivity. Here we report the synthesis and thermoelectric properties of single crystalline Fe 2 Ge 3 . Millimeter-sized Fe 2 Ge 3 single crystals grown by the chemical vapor transport method enable the study of the intrinsic thermoelectric properties. The Seebeck coefficient of Fe 2 Ge 3 is negative and its magnitude increases linearly with temperature, showing a degenerate n-type semiconductor behavior. Analysis of the electrical resistivity and specific heat data indicates the existence of an Einstein mode with a characteristic temperature of about 60 K, suggesting the presence of low-energy optical phonons. Further, the thermal conductivity of Fe 2 Ge 3 along the c axis is as low as 1.9Wm -1 K -1 at 300 K and exhibits a nearly temperature-independent characteristic, which is distinct from the previous theoretical calculations with a stronger temperature dependence. The low thermal conductivity may be attributed to the scattering of acoustic phonons by low-energy optical modes and the presence of non-extended diffuson modes, as reported in another NCL compound, MnSi 1.74 . This study provides valuable insights into the electrical and thermal properties of Fe 2 Ge 3 , which can open up possibilities for future advances in thermoelectric applications.

Electronic structure and thermoelectric properties of CoAsSb with post-DFT approaches

Here, we study the electronic structure and thermoelectric properties of recently synthesized CoAsSb. The calculated bandgap becomes more accurate for increasingly-complex electronic structure methods: generalized gradient approximation, hybrid functionals, selfconsistent linearized quasiparticle GW method (LQSGW), and LQSGW with simplified vertex corrections. By equating the bandgaps of each method from a rigid shift of the bands, we evaluate the contributions made to thermoelectric properties beyond the bandgap. In doing so, we evaluate the efficacy of a commonpractice: a rigid shift applied to less-costly electronic structure methods in order to gain some accuracy of the more-costly methods. We find that while the shift made the Seebeck coefficients much closer to one another than from the original electronic structures, there remain differences in the Goldsmid-Sharp (thermoelectric) bandgap between the methods and from the intended electronic bandgap. Additionally, some lasting differences in temperature dependence remain between the methods.

Thermoelectric properties of SnSe and SnSe 2 single crystals

Thermoelectric materials can serve for conversion between thermal and electrical energy. In the search for new thermoelectric materials, layered SnSe and SnSe 2 are promising candidates. Here we have successfully synthesized SnSe and SnSe 2 single crystals by the modified Bridgman method and studied their thermoelectric properties: thermopower (S), thermal conductivity (κ), and electrical conductivity (σ) in the temperature range between 2 K and 400 K, which are absent in the literature. In particular, the kink observed in the thermopower corresponds to the metallic-nonmetallic crossover temperature for both SnSe and SnSe 2 , reflecting their inherent electronic nature. Compared to SnSe 2 above 100 K, we find that SnSe exhibits higher electrical conductivity, higher thermopower, and lower thermal conductivity, thus resulting in the higher figure of merit. Hall effect measurements reveal that the Hall mobility in SnSe is an order higher than that in SnSe 2 , advancing its thermoelectric performance. These experimental results are supported by first principles calculations, which indicate that the inequivalent Sn-Se bonding lengths help improve the figure of merit of SnSe.

Crystal Structure and Atomic Vacancy Optimized Thermoelectric Properties in Gadolinium Selenides

Thermoelectric materials enable the energy conversion of waste heat into electricity, helpful to relieve global energy crisis. Here, we report a systematic investigation on high-temperature thermoelectric gadolinium selenides, cubic Gd 3-x Se 4 (x = 0.16, 0.21 and 0.25) and orthorhombic Gd 2 Se 3-y (y = 0.02, 0.06 and 0.08). High energy synchrotron x-ray diffraction and total scattering have been used to investigate the crystallographic and local structures. Atomic-scale clusters of Gd vacancy in the cubic phase are observed by employing the reverse Monte Carlo simulation. For cubic Gd 3-x Se 4 , adjusting Gd vacancy triggers the effect of multiple conduction bands, confirmed by the increase in effective masses and theoretical calculations. A reasonable peak zT value of 0.27 is achieved at 850 K for Gd 3-x Se 4 (x = 0.16). On the other hand, tuning Se vacancy enables the optimization of electron concentration for the orthorhombic Gd 2 Se 3-y . More significantly, its low deformation potential (Ξ = 12eV) gives rise to enhanced electron mobility and higher peak zT value of 0.54 at 850 K for Gd 2 Se 3-y (y = 0.02). Intriguingly, a higher zT of 1.2 at 1200 K is reasonably predicted by quality factor analysis. Finally, this work extends the scope of high-temperature thermoelectric materials and facilitates the exploration of novel high-temperature thermoelectric materials

Microstructure and heteroatom dictate the doping mechanism and thermoelectric properties of poly(alkyl-chalcogenophenes)

Heteroatom substitution can favorably alter electronic transport in conductive polymers to improve their thermoelectric performance. Here we report the spectroscopic, structural, and thermoelectric properties of poly(3–(3',7'-dimethyloctyl) chalcogenophenes) or P3RX doped with 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4TCNQ), where the heteroatom [X = thiophene (T), selenophene (Se), tellurophene (Te)], the doping methodology, and extent of doping are systematically varied. Spectroscopic measurements reveal that while all P3RX polymers are appreciably doped, the doping mechanism is inherently different. Poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT, used as a control) and poly(3–(3',7'-dimethyloctyl)tellurophene) (P3RTe) are doped primarily via integer charge transfer (ICT), whereas poly(3–(3',7'-dimethyloctyl)selenophene) (P3RSe) and poly(3–(3',7'-dimethyloctyl)thiophene) (P3RT) are doped via charge transfer complex (CTC) mechanisms. Despite these differences, all polymers saturate with roughly the same number of F4TCNQ counterions (1 dopant per 4 to 6 heterocycles), reinforcing the idea that the extent of charge transfer varies with the doping mechanism. Grazing incidence wide-angle x-ray scattering measurements provide insight into the structural driving forces behind different doping mechanisms—P3RT and P3RSe have similar microstructures in which F4TCNQ intercalates between the π-stacked backbones resulting in CTC doping (localized carriers), while P3HT and P3RTe have microstructures in which F4TCNQ intercalates in the alkyl side chain region, giving rise to ICT doping (delocalized carriers). These structural and spectroscopic observations shed light on why P3HT and P3RTe obtain electrical conductivities ca. 3 S/cm, while P3RT and P3RSe have conductivities <10–3 S/cm under the same thin film processing conditions. Ultimately, this work quantifies the effects of heteroatom, microstructural ordering, extent of doping, and doping mechanism, thereby providing rational guidance for designing future thermoelectric polymer-dopant systems.

Determining the Electronic Structure and Thermoelectric Properties of MoS 2 /MoSe 2 Type‐I Heterojunction by DFT and the Landauer Approach

Abstract The electronic structure and thermoelectric properties of MoX 2 (X = S, Se) Van der Waals heterojunctions are reported, with the intention of motivating the design of electronic devices using such materials. Calculations indicate the proposed heterojunctions are thermodynamically stable and present a band gap reduction from 1.8 eV to 0.8 eV. The latter effect is highly related to interactions between metallic d‐character orbitals and chalcogen p‐character orbitals. The theoretical approach allows to predict a transition from semiconducting to semi‐metallic behavior. The band alignment indicates a type‐I heterojunction and band offsets of 0.2 eV. Transport properties show clear n‐type nature and a high Seebeck coefficient at 300 K, along with conductivity values (σ/τ) in the order of 10 20 . Lastly, using the Landauer approach and ballistic transport, the proposed heterojunctions can be modeled as a channel material for a typical one‐gate transistor configuration predicting subthreshold values of ≈60 mV dec −1 and field–effect mobilities of ≈160 cm −2 V −1 s −1 .

Ultralow Thermal Conductivity and Thermoelectric Properties of Rb 2 Bi 8 Se 13

Complex bismuth chalcogenides are narrow band gap semiconductors with intrinsic low thermal conductivity, which exhibit high potential as highly efficient thermoelectric materials. Here, we assess the basic thermoelectric properties of polycrystalline Rb 2 Bi 8 Se 13 in the temperature range 300-823 K as well as performance-optimizing strategies. We find that the as-made bulk samples are single phase with the monoclinic crystal structure (P2 1 /m) and crystallize in layer morphology. The pristine sample exhibits an exceedingly low lattice thermal conductivity of 0.6- 0.46 W·m -1 ·K -1 at 300-823 K, which derives from strong lattice anharmonicity, large Grüneisen parameters, and low phonon velocities induced by the complex crystal structure with heavy atom Bi and a large unit cell. Here, the Cl doping successfully enhances the carrier concentration in Rb 2 Bi 8 Se 13 with a negligible impact on the electronic band structure, displaying common doping behaviors. Se vacancy, on the contrary, leads to n-type doping and enhances the effective mass and power factors more significantly. Consequently, a maximum ZT of ~0.75 at 823 K for the 0.3% Se-vacancy-doped sample is obtained.

Lattice dynamics and thermoelectric properties of diamondoid materials

Abstract The diamondoid compounds are a large family of important semiconductors, which possess various unique transport properties and had been widely investigated in the fields of photoelectricity and nonlinear optics. For a significantly long period of time, diamondoid materials were not given much attention in the field of thermoelectricity. However, this changed when a series of diamondoid compounds showed a thermoelectric figure of merit ( ZT ) greater than 1.0. This discovery sparked considerable interest in further exploring the thermoelectric properties of diamondoid materials. This review aims to provide a comprehensive view of our current understanding of thermal and electronic transport in diamondoid materials and stimulate their development in thermoelectric applications. We present a collection of recent discoveries concerning the lattice dynamics and electronic structure of diamondoid materials. We review the underlying physics responsible for their unique electrical and phonon transport behaviors. Moreover, we provide insights into the advancements made in the field of thermoelectricity for diamondoid materials and the corresponding strategies employed to optimize their performance. Lastly, we emphasize the challenges that lie ahead and outline potential avenues for future research in the domain of diamondoid thermoelectric materials.

Topological and thermoelectric properties of double antiperovskite pnictides

Doubling the perovskite cell (double perovskite) has been found to open new possibilities for engineering functional materials, magnetic materials in particular. This route should be applicable to the antiperovskite (aPV) class. In the pnictide based double aPV (2aPV) class introduced here magnetism is very rare, and we address them as new topological materials, possibly with thermoelectric interest. We have found that the 2aPV supercell provides a systematically larger band gap that can serve to inhibit bulk conductivity, and also large spin–orbit coupling for band inversion. We present examples from a broad study of double antiperovskites focusing on the X 6 AA'B 2 configuration, where X is the alkaline earth element and A and B are the group 5A pnictogens. We find that an 'extended s' state at the valence band minimum, described alternatively as a cation valence state or a modulated interstitial planewave state, plays a crucial role in both topological and thermoelectric properties. Several of these compounds may house topological phases, while transport calculations indicate they may also find themselves useful in thermoelectric applications.

A robust high sensitivity scanning thermal probe for simultaneous microscale thermal and thermoelectric property mapping

Scanning Thermal Microscopy (SThM) provides efficient thermal property measurement with micro- or nanoscale spatial resolution. However, the sensitivity and accuracy of state-of-the-art thermal probes have been limited by excessive thermal contact resistance between the probe and sample. Introduced herein is a robust thermal microprobe that can increase the probe-sample contact force by more than two orders of magnitude, thereby reducing the probe-sample thermal contact resistance by as much as 96% and increasing measurement sensitivity by more than 240% compared to a commercial thermal probe with the same dimensions and measurement principle. The relationship between the probe-sample thermal contact resistance, thermal exchange radius, and sample thermal conductivity is determined experimentally. Simultaneous measurement of thermal conductivity and Seebeck coefficient with unprecedented sensitivity is demonstrated using the enhanced scanning thermal microprobe on samples of an extended range of thermal conductivity up to 18 W/m K, increasing the range of samples applicable to SThM when compared to the conventional commercial probe with diminished measurement sensitivity above ~10 W/m K. The probe is further demonstrated by simultaneously mapping thermal conductivity and Seebeck coefficient as a function of depth from the irradiated surface of an ion-irradiated bulk nanostructured thermoelectric material. In addition to enabling microscale thermal conductivity and Seebeck coefficient measurement of materials previously not applicable to SThM, the probe can also facilitate high-throughput characterization of combinatorial materials to aid the rapid discovery of compositions and processing conditions that yield highly desired thermal and thermoelectric properties.

Organizing Chaos: Boosting Thermoelectric Properties by Ordering the Clathrate Framework of Ba 8 Cu 16 As 30

The type I clathrate, Ba 8 Cu 16 As 30 , is reinvestigated and found to have a low-temperature polymorph mP 108-Ba 8 Cu 16 As 30 with ordered Cu and As sites. In situ temperature-dependent powder X-ray diffraction experiments guided synthetic efforts toward the synthesis of the ordered monoclinic ( mP 108) and disordered cubic ( cP 54) polymorphs with high phase purity. While a transition from mP 108-Ba 8 Cu 16 As 30 to cP 54-Ba 8 Cu 16 As 30 is not directly observed, cP 54-Ba 8 Cu 16 As 30 is stabilized through quenching from high temperatures and is confirmed through high-resolution synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction. Further, combined theoretical predictions and experimental observations of the thermoelectric properties of both polymorphs reveal that the ordering of Cu and As atoms in the clathrate framework simultaneously enhances the Seebeck coefficient and electronic conductivity by increasing the hole effective mass and reducing the electronic scattering events. Consequently, the zT of mP 108-Ba 8 Cu 16 As 30 reaches a maximum of 0.2 at 575 K, an order of magnitude higher than that of cP 54-Ba 8 Cu 16 As 30 .

Tuning the Radius Ratio to Enhance Thermoelectric Properties in the Zintl Compounds AM 2 Sb 2 (A = Ba, Sr; M = Zn, Cd)

Five novel Zintl phase solid solutions in the Ba 1–x Sr x Zn 2–y Cd y Sb 2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.13(1); 0 ≤ y ≤ 0.32(2)) system were successfully synthesized by the molten Pb metal-flux method, and the powder X-ray diffraction and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses proved that all five title compounds adopted the BaCu 2 S 2 -type phase having the orthorhombic Pnma space group (Z = 4, Pearson code oP20) with five crystallographically independent atomic sites. The previously studied BaCu 2 S 2 -type antimonides demonstrated a limited tolerance for doping in contrast to the CaAl 2 Si 2 -type antimonides. To understand the relatively narrower phase width and limited dopability of the title BaCu 2 S 2 -type phase than the CaAl 2 Si 2 -type phase in the overall Ba 1–x Sr x Zn 2–y Cd y Sb 2 system, the radius ratio of cations and anionic elements r + /r – for two structure types were thoroughly investigated. For the first time, the r + /r – ratio was identified as a critical factor for the phase selectivity: (1) r + /r – > 1 favored the BaCu 2 S 2 -type phase, and (2) r + /r – < 1 favored the CaAl 2 Si 2 -type phase. Further, we also revealed the structural transformation mechanism from the more widely observed CaAl 2 Si 2 -type phase to the title BaCu 2 S 2 -type phase as the relatively larger cationic elements were introduced to the system. A series of DFT calculations using the three hypothetical models indicated that a resonance peak near EF in the density of states curves was descended from the relatively flat band structure at several special symmetry points rationalizing the enhanced Seebeck coefficients of Ba 0.94(1) Sr 0.06 Zn 1.86(3) Cd 0.14 Sb 2 and Ba 0.96(1) Sr 0.04 Zn 1.68(2) Cd 0.32 Sb 2 . Electron localization function analysis rationalized the correlation between the polarity change of anionic Zn/Cd–Sb bonds and the charge carrier mobility on the anionic frameworks. Temperature-dependent thermoelectric properties were studied for the four title compounds, and the results proved that the Sr and Cd doping in the title Ba 1–x Sr x Zn 2–y Cd y Sb 2 system successfully enhanced the ZT values through the increased Seebeck coefficients and the reduced total thermal conductivities.

Influence of metal organic framework glasses on thermoelectric properties of AgSb 0.96 Zn 0.04 Te 2 alloy

In recent years, a significant number of chalcogenides-based thermoelectric (TE) materials have been investigated theoretically and experimentally. However, the efficiency of TE materials is often limited by physical and chemical stability issues. Therefore, it is crucial to identify additive materials that can reduce thermal conductivity and improve the efficiency of crystalline TE materials. One well-known approach to lower thermal conductivity is introducing porosity into the material structure, which helps scatter phonon energy. Metal-organic framework (MOF) crystalline materials, known for their porosity and physical and chemical stability, offer unique advantages in TE applications. In this study, we investigate the influence of 20 weight% amorphous Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework (ZIF)-62 to p-type AgSb 0.96 Zn 0.04 Te 2 (ASTZ), a well-known TE material. We synthesized composites, ASTZ, ASTZ-Zn, and ASTZ-Co, by sintering ASTZ with amorphous ZIF-62(Zn) and ZIF-62(Co) respectively. The addition of amorphous ZIF-62(Zn) leads to a significant enhancement in the Seebeck coefficient of ASTZ increasing from 151 µV/K to 229 µV/K at 586K. Moreover, the thermal conductivity of the ASTZ TE materials drops drastically from 0.491 Wm -1 K -1 to around 0.22 Wm -1 K -1 at 623K with the addition of either amorphous ZIF-62(Zn) or ZIF-62(Co). Remarkably, ASTZ containing amorphous ZIF-62(Zn) achieves a maximum thermoelectric figure of merit (zT max ) of approximately 0.078 at 573K, surpassing any MOF-based thermoelectric material reported to date. In conclusion, these findings highlight the potential of amorphous ZIF-62 as an effective additive for enhancing the properties of thermoelectric materials.
