Camp Lejeune Federal Fleet Tiger Team EVSE Site Assessment

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) was contracted by the Department of Defense (DOD) Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) and the Department of Energy (DOE) Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) to develop a web tool and complete pilot assessments for the installation of Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE). NREL has deployed Tiger Teams comprising engineers and fleet experts to support DOD and DOE on several EVSE site assessments since 2015. However, the advancements developed in support of this report, including a cost-estimation tool and geospatial mapping tool, will enable a user-driven path to assess EVSE needs. This report details the site design recommendations for Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Yellowstone National Park Federal Fleet Tiger Team EVSE Site Assessment [Slides]

The U.S. Department of Energy Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) helps federal agencies reduce petroleum consumption and increase alternative fuel use through its resources for sustainable federal fleets. A key element of this assistance involves supporting agencies in the transition to zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs). Fleet electrification is part of a federal policy to achieve net-zero emissions economy-wide and a carbon pollution-free electricity sector, established through two executive orders (EOs) - EO 14008: Tackling the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad and EO 14057: Catalyzing America's Clean Energy Industries and Jobs through Federal Sustainability. This site report supports the development of a ZEV deployment plan for Yellowstone National Park, which can ultimately be incorporated into the overall U.S. Department of the Interior ZEV fleet strategy.

Exploiting Kubernetes to Simplify the Deployment and Management of the Multi-purpose CMS Pilot Job Factory

GlideinWMS, a widely utilized workload management system in high-energy physics (HEP) research, serves as the backbone for efficient job provisioning across distributed computing resources. It is utilized by various experiments and organizations, including CMS, OSG, Dune, and FIFE, to create HTCondor pools as large as 600k cores. In particular, a shared factory service historically deployed at UCSD has been configured to interface with more than 500 routes to compute clusters. As part of our team’s initiative to modernize infrastructure and enhance scalability, we undertook the migration of the GlideinWMS factory service into the Kubernetes environment. Leveraging the flexibility and orchestration capabilities of Kubernetes, we successfully deployed the factory service within the OSG Tiger Kubernetes cluster. The major benefits Kubernetes gives us is it streamlines the management and monitoring of the factory infrastructure, and improves fault tolerance through its resilient deployment strategies. Through this case study, we aim to share insights, challenges, and best practices encountered during the migration process. Our experience underscores the benefits of embracing containerization and Kubernetes orchestration for HEP computing infrastructure, paving the way for scalability and resilience in distributed computing environments.

malbacR: A Package for Standardized Implementation of Batch Correction Methods for Omics Data

Mass spectrometry is a powerful tool for identifying and analyzing small molecules, such as metabolites and lipids, in com-plex biological samples. Liquid chromatography and gas chromatography mass spectrometry studies quite commonly in-volve large numbers of samples, which can require significant time for sample preparation and analyses. To accommodate such studies, the samples are commonly split into batches. Inevitably, variations in sample handling, temperature fluctua-tion, imprecise timing, column degradation and other factors result in systematic errors or biases of the measured abundances between the batches. Numerous methods are available via R packages to assist with batch correction for small molecule om-ics data; however, since these methods were developed by different research teams, the algorithms are available in separate R packages, each with different data input and output formats. We introduce the malbacR package which consolidates eleven common batch effect correction methods for small molecule omics data into one place so users can easily implement and compare: pareto scaling, power scaling, range scaling, ComBat, EigenMS, NOMIS, RUV-random, QC-RLSC, WaveI-CA2.0, TIGER, and SERRF. The malbacR package standardizes data input and output formats across these batch correction methods. The package works in conjunction with the pmartR package, allowing users to seamlessly include batch effect cor-rection in a pmartR workflow without needing any additional data manipulation.
