Complete β-decay patterns of 142 Cs, 142 Ba, and 142 La determined using total absorption spectroscopy

Background: The β decays of fission products produced in nuclear fuel are important for nuclear energy applications and fundamental science of reactor antineutrinos. In particular, nuclear reactor safety is related to the decay modes of radioactive neutron-rich nuclei, primarily via the emission of γ rays, neutrons, and electrons. Additionally nuclear reactors are the most powerful man-made source of antineutrinos emitted during the β decay of fission products. These antineutrinos are used to inspect fundamental properties of leptons as well as informing reactor operation. However, the majority of data on complex decays of fission products collected in the evaluated nuclear data repositories like Evaluated Nuclear Structure Data File (ENSDF) and Evaluated Nuclear Data Files (ENDF) are based on low-efficiency and often incomplete measurements resulting in questionable reference reactor antineutrino flux predictions, see the analysis by [Nichols, J. Nucl. Sci. Technol. 52, 17 (2015)]. Various assessments like the one done under the auspices of the [Yoshida et al., Assessment of Fission Product Decay Data for Decay Heat Calculations: A report by the Working Party on International Evaluation Co-operation of the Nuclear Energy Agency Nuclear Science Committee (Nuclear Energy Agency, Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, Paris, France, 2007), Vol. 25], as well as by [Sonzogni, Johnson, and McCutchan, Phys. Rev. C 91, 011301(R) (2015)] and [Dwyer and Langford, Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 012502 (2015)], list the A = 142 isobars with high cumulative fission yield among the important nuclei where data for reactor decay heat and/or antineutrino production should be verified and/or improved. Purpose: Here, our goal is to improve the quality of β -decay measurements and evaluate the impact of modified decay schemes on reactor decay heat and antineutrino energy spectra, for fission products along the A = 142 isobaric chain. This work is an in depth follow-up on [Rasco et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 092501 (2016)]. which presented briefly the impact of the corrected decay scheme of 142 Cs . Here, we extend the data to full isobaric decay chain including the daughter nuclei, 142 Ba and 142 La, and present more details on the 142 Cs results. Method: The decays of neutron-rich isobars of mass A = 142 produced by means of proton-induced fission of 238 U were measured using the Modular Total Absorption Spectrometer (MTAS) array on-line at the mass separator and Tandem accelerator at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Results: The β -decay schemes for 142 Cs and 142 La were modified with respect to the nuclear data repositories. A small β-delayed neutron branching ratio for 142 Cs emitter was remeasured as $0.10^{+5}_{–3}% %. Improved precision on the measured half-lives is reported. Small corrections to the low-energy decay of 142 Ba are made. The β-decay patterns for 142 La and 142 Cs are presented. The decay heat release and cross section for the detection of reactor antineutrinos are deduced and compared to earlier results. Conclusions: The β-feeding pattern for 142 Cs having decay energy value $Q_β$ of over 7 MeV was substantially modified with respect to the current ENSDF entry. Smaller changes were encountered for 142 La, but since this A = 142 isobar also has a large cumulative yield in fission, the changes influence both decay heat and the antineutrino spectra. The previously known β intensities for 142 Ba decay ($Q_β$ value of 2.2 MeV) were verified and slightly modified. Overall, increased decay heat values and lower flux of antineutrinos interacting with matter are presented.

ORNL FACE Final Harvest, 2009, with data on leaf characteristics and tree mass

During the final year of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) experiment, 16 trees were felled and processed during July 2009. The trees had been grown for 12 years in ambient or elevated CO2. Two data sets are reported. Leaf characteristics (leaf mass per unit area, leaf thickness, average leaf size, carbon and nitrogen concentrations) are reported for each 1-meter section of the tree crowns in data set "Canopy_subsamples.csv". The measurements were made on approximately 20 subsamples collected from each 1-meter section of the canopy. Wood dry mass, total tree height, basal area, total leaf mass and leaf area are reported in "Tree_harvest.csv", based on field measurements of fresh mass and dry mass to fresh mass ratio of subsamples. The ORNL FACE experiment, including photos of the harvesting activity, is described at: https://richnorby.org/home/face-home/.

Changes in nitrate binding with lanthanides in BLPhen complexes

Preorganized ligands such as bis-lactam-1,10-phenanthroline (BLPhen) offer unique selectivity trends in solvent extraction of rare-earth ions, particularly from aqueous nitrate solutions. However, due to the ligand’s lipophilicity it is experimentally challenging to obtain crystal structures of the corresponding lanthanide (Ln):ligand complexes to describe the local structure of the first coordination shell and the role of the nitrate ions in the organic phase. In this work, we report first principles molecular dynamics (FPMD) simulations of the complexation of trivalent lanthanide ions (La, Nd, and Eu) with the BLPhen ligand in the presence of nitrate ions in the dichloroethane (DCE) solvent. We find that two nitrate anions are present in the first solvation shell and the third nitrate anion is far from the first solvation shell in all three [Ln(BLPhen) 2 ] 3+ complexes examined. Moving along the lanthanide series from La to Nd to Eu, the binding pocket formed by the two BLPhen ligands shrinks in size; as a result, the two nitrate configuration changes from one-monodentate/one-bidentate binding mode for La and Nd to all monodentate for Eu. Meanwhile, the total coordination number drops from 11 for La and Nd to 10 for Eu. More interestingly, the bidentate binding in [La(BLPhen) 2 ] 3+ and [Nd(BLPhen) 2 ] 3+ complexes is highly dynamic, frequently switching to monodentate and back. The FPMD insights into the differing modes and dynamics of nitrates in the first coordination shell will be useful for further atomistic understanding of the complex structure, formation, and stability in the organic phase.

High-temperature superconductivity in LaH 10

The recent discovery of a high critical temperature $T_c$ in compressed H 3 S has been followed by the prediction of Liu et al. of $T_c$ ≈ 250 K in the clathrate LaH 10 structure. This report has been confirmed experimentally by Somayazulu et al. and Drozdov et al. Additional theoretical work by Wang et al. and Quan et al. further established the mechanism of electron-phonon interaction and the dominant role of hydrogen. In the present Rapid Communication we follow the classic McMillan paper, which separates the electron and phonon contributions to the electron-phonon coupling λ. We first compute the numerator of McMillan's expression, the Hopfield parameter η, using the theory of Gaspari and Gyorffy (GG), and obtain the force constants in the denominator from Wang et al. and Quan et al. The resulting λ is used in the Allen-Dynes equation to calculate $T_c$. The value of $T_c$ reaches a maximum in the range of 236–263 K at pressures of 255 GPa and decreases for smaller or larger pressures. Further, we provide a thorough analysis of the different terms of the GG equation and draw the conclusion that the $\textit{sp}$ channel of the hydrogen is the most important contribution to obtain high values of $T_c$ in this material. Consistent with Wang et al., we find large values of λ that decrease with increasing pressure. In addition, we find that the hydrogen sites are the largest contributors to the total value of the coupling constant λ. That is, the acoustic mode associated with La contributes only 2% to the total λ, while the optic modes associated with H contribute 18% for the H1 site and 80% for the H2 site. These relative contributions to λ are consistent with those given by Wang et al. and by Quan et al. Thus, our results strongly support the view that LaH 10 is a metallic hydrogen superconductor.

Data for "Integrated Green Biorefinery for the Production of Anthocyanins, Fermentable Sugars, and High Pure Lignin from Miscanthus × giganteus "

Miscanthus x giganteus (Mxg) is a promising perennial crop for producing natural colorants, renewable fuels, and bioproducts. However, natural recalcitrance and high pretreatment cost are major barriers to their complete conversion. In this study, a green processing method has been investigated for efficient recovery of natural pigments (anthocyanins), fermentable sugars, and pure lignin from Mxg genotypes using choline chloride-based natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) systems. Interestingly, choline chloride: lactic acid (ChCl: LA) NADES-processed biomass resulted in 67.8 ± 2.1 μg g−1 of anthocyanins from dry biomass. A maximum of 87.4%–94.1% glucose yield was achieved after enzymatic saccharification. The effective extraction of lignin with high purity with higher β-aryl ether (βO4) bonds from advanced crops is crucial for lignin valorization. Notably, highly pure lignin (≈93.4% ± 1.4%) is achieved after low-temperature NADES pretreatment while retaining lignin’s native structure. 31P nuclear magnetic resonance demonstrated that total phenolics for ChCl: LA-lignin resulted in 1.20 mmol g−1 hydroxyls. The relative monolignol composition of syringyl (S), guaiacyl (G), and p-hydroxyphenyl (H) is 19.0, 65.7, and 14.3%, respectively, as evidenced by heteronuclear single quantum coherence analysis. This study provides a novel approach for obtaining high-purity lignin for catalytic depolymerization for oligomers and bifunctional monoaromatics production and leverages current cellulosic biorefinery technologies.

Cepheid Calibration of the Peak Brightness of SNe Ia.: SN 1989B in NGC 3627 - 9

Repeated imaging observations have been made of NGC 3627 with the Hubble Space Telescope in 1997/98, over an interval of 58 days. Images were obtained on 12 epochs in the F555W band and on five epochs in the F8141,V band. The galaxy hosted the prototypical, "Branch normal", type la supernova SN 1989B. A total of 83 variables have been found, of which 68 are definite Cepheid variables with periods ranging from 75 days to 3.85 days. The de-reddened distance modulus is determined to be (m - M)(sub 0) = 30.22 +/- 0.12 (internal uncertainty) using a subset of the Cepheid data whose reddening and error parameters are secure. The photometric data of Wells et al. (1994), combined with the Cepheid data for NGC 3627 give MB(max) = -19.36 +/- 0.18 and M(sub V)(max) = -19.34 +/- 0.16 for SN 1989B. Combined with the previous six calibrations in this program, plus two additional calibrations determined by others gives the mean absolute magnitudes at maximum of (M(sub B)) = -19.48 +/- 0.07 for "Brunch normal" SNe Ia at this interim stage in the calibration program. Using the argument by Wells et al. (1994) that SN 1989B here is virtually identical in decay rate and colors at maximum with SN 198ON in NGC 1316 in the Fornax cluster, and that such identity means nearly identical absolute magnitude, it follows that the difference in the distance modulus of NGC 3627 and NGC 1316 is 1.62 +/- 0.03 mag. Thus the NGC 3627 modulus implies that (m - M)(sub 0) = 31.84 for NGC 1316. The second parameter correlations of M(max) of blue SNe la with decay rate, color at maximum, and Hubble type are re-investigated. The dependence of (M(max)) on decay rate is non-linear, showing a minimum for decay rates between 1.0 less than ADelta(sub m)15 less than 1.6. Magnitudes corrected for decay rate show no dependence on Hubble type, but a dependence on color remains. Correcting both the fiducial sample of 34 SNe la with decay-rate data and the current eight calibrating SNe la for the correlation with decay rate as well as color gives H(sub 0) = 60 +/- 2 (internal) km/s Mpc, in both B and V. The same value to within 4% is obtained if only the SNe la in spirals (without second parameter corrections) are considered. The correlation of SNe la color at maximum with M(max) cannot be due to internal absorption because the slope coefficients in B, V, and I with the change in magnitude are far from or even opposite to the canonical reddening values. The color effect must be intrinsic to the supernova physics. "Absorption" corrections of distant blue SNe la will lead to incorrect values of H(sub 0). The Cepheid distances used in this series are insensitive to metallicity differences. The zeropoint of the P-L relation is based on an assumed LMC modulus of (m - M)(sub 0) = 18.50. As this may have to be increased by 0(sup m).06 to 0(sup m).08, all distances in this paper will follow and Ho will decrease by 3 - 4%.

Hydrogen Production Cost with Alkaline Electrolysis

Rigorous stakeholder-vetted techno-economic analysis was performed to assess the cost of hydrogen (H 2 ) produced using state-of-the-art Liquid Alkaline (LA) electrolysis. Projected high-volume, untaxed levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) range from 2020US $\$ 1.84$ to $\$ 2.88$/kg-H 2 depending on technology year, process design, and electrolyzer project scale, assuming an electricity price of $\$ 0.03$/kWh. The total installed capital cost for a LA electrolysis plant was estimated from bottom-up stack and installed cost models that account for purchased equipment, installation costs, site preparation, and general overhead costs. For this study, the LA electrolysis plant is assumed to be a stick-built, greenfield project developed by an EPC firm with electrolysis stacks purchased directly from an electrolysis stack manufacturer. The price of the electrolysis stacks is based on a bottom-up cost assessment with business markup for the electrolysis company fabricator. Methods from the Hydrogen Analysis (H 2 A) production model, a peer-reviewed national laboratory-developed discounted cash flow model, were used to calculate the LCOH production in 2020$/kg-H 2 . The baseline electricity price case ($\$ 0.03$/kWh) corresponds to average wholesale electricity prices currently possible in U.S. markets with plentiful wind. Similar low-cost electricity pricing is possible from solar Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) although these prices are typically limited by renewable energy capacity factors.

Accurate CI-MBPT calculation of radiative lifetimes and transition probabilities of neutral lanthanum (La I) odd states with J = 3/2

In this work, an accurate calculation of radiative lifetimes and transition probabilities of the first 21 odd states with a total angular momentum J = 3/2 was performed for La I using configuration-interaction many-body perturbation theory (CI-MBPT). A technique to obtain correct transition amplitudes was devised for pairs of states with substantial mixing that improved the theoretical accuracy. The results were compared to known experimental and theoretical data for the considered transitions. It has been shown that the transition data calculated with CI-MBPT and with corrections for pairs of mixed states are in good agreement with the latest experimental data of Den Hartog et al, 2015 J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Phys. 48, 155 001, better than other theoretical results. The transition data can find many applications in astrophysics, and the CI-MBPT formalism with mixing correction is applicable to other atoms similar to or more complex than La I.

Microorganisms, Organic Carbon, and Their Relationship with Oxidant Activity in Hyper-Arid Mars-Like Soils: Implications for Soil Habitability

Soil samples from the hyper-arid region in the Atacama 23 Desert in Southern Peru (La Joya Desert) were analyzed for total and labile organic carbon (TOC & LOC), phospholipid fatty acids analysis (PLFA), quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), 4',6- diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI)-fluorescent microscopy, culturable microorganisms, and oxidant activity, in order to understand the relationship between the presence of organic matter and microorganisms in these types of soils. TOC content levels were similar to the labile pool of carbon suggesting the absence of recalcitrant carbon in these soils. The range of LOC was from 2 to 60 micro-g/g of soil. PLFA analysis indicated a maximum of 2.3 x 10(exp 5) cell equivalents/g. Culturing of soil extracts yielded 1.1 x 10(exp 2)-3.7 x 10(exp 3) CFU/g. qRT-PCR showed between 1.0 x 10(exp 2) and 8 x 10(exp 3) cells/g; and DAPI fluorescent staining indicated bacteria counts up to 5 x 104 cells/g. Arid and semiarid samples (controls) showed values between 10(exp 7) and 10(exp 11) cells/g with all of the methods used. Importantly, the concentration of microorganisms in hyper-arid soils did not show any correlation with the organic carbon content; however, there was a significant dependence on the oxidant activity present in these soil samples evaluated as the capacity to decompose sodium formate in 10 hours. We suggest that the analysis of oxidant activity could be a useful indicator of the microbial habitability in hyper-arid soils, obviating the need to measure water activity over time. This approach could be useful in astrobiological studies on other worlds.

Local lattice distortions and electronic orders in strongly correlated systems by resonant total x-ray scattering: A case study of A Pt 2 X 2 intermetallics ( A = U , Ce, or La and X = Si or Ge)

Revealing local lattice distortions in physical systems is nontrivial, largely because such structural features often are not necessarily amenable to traditional crystallographic investigations. This poses limits to our understanding of the underlying physic, particularly in the case of strongly correlated systems where structural, electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom are intertwined. Using resonant total x-ray scattering coupled to differential pair distribution function analysis, we reveal the presence of pronounced local lattice distortions in the square net Pt planes in the prototypical strongly correlated APt 2 X 2 intermetallics (A = U, Ce or La and X = Si or Ge). The distortions are present before charge density wave, magnetic, Kondo lattice coherence and/or superconducting orders emerge in these materials and, as density functional calculations suggest, are likely to affect them. Finally, our study sheds light on the poorly known interactions between electronic orders and structural disorder in strongly correlated systems and also demonstrates an advanced experimental approach to determine it that is relevant to any physical system showing deviations from perfect crystallinity.

Early Results from the Solar-Minimum 2019 Total Solar Eclipse

We observed the 2 July 2019 total solar eclipse with a variety of imaging and spectroscopic instruments recording from three sites in mainland Chile: on the centerline at La Higuera, from the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, and from La Serena, as well as from a chartered flight at peak totality in mid-Pacific. Our spectroscopy monitored Fe X, Fe XIV, and Ar X lines, and we imaged Ar X with a Lyot filter adjusted from its original H-alpha bandpass. Our composite imaging has been compared with predictions based on modeling using magnetic-field measurements from the pre-eclipse month. Our time-differenced sites will be used to measure motions in coronal streamers.

A case study on the use of carbon sticky tabs for microbeam uranium isotope measurement with an emphasis on understanding the influence of subtle variations in substrate composition

In this paper we integrate laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), large geometry secondary ion mass spectrometry (LG-SIMS), laser ablation—multi collector—inductively coupled plasma—mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS), and trace elemental compositions obtained by bulk digestion from a suite of commercially available carbon sticky tabs to determine if subtle variations in the tab’s composition can be tied to shifts in the observed uranium isotopic composition of the IRMM-2020 standard relative to its ‘true’ value. The results suggest that, although clear differences exist in the relative abundances of carbon and hydrogen across the various carbon sticky tabs examined, as well as differences in their trace elemental and total uranium concentrations, these differences do not appear to influence the LG-SIMS or LA-MC-ICP-MS uranium isotope ratio measurements, or the appearance of the uranium mass spectrum scans. Instead, the quality (i.e., precision and accuracy) of the LG-SIMS and LA-MC-ICP-MS results are directly proportional to the observed signal intensity at the time of analysis. For the LG-SIMS measurements, there does appear to be a direct correlation between 235U1H hydride formation rates and vacuum conditions within the instrument’s analytical chamber. Furthermore, none of the carbon sticky tabs examined by LG-SIMS displayed evidence of elevated background uranium content. While a preliminary correlation was observed between the uranium isotope background signal during LA-MC-ICP-MS and the total uranium concentrations determined by isotope dilution, none of the tabs displayed a high enough analytical background to affect the isotope ratio measurements.

Developing Inorganic Resins for Radium and Actinium Generators and Purifications

The inorganic, normal-phase sorbents alumina, titania, and zirconia were evaluated and screened for the separation of Ba, La, 228 Ra, 228 Ac, and 212 Pb in a dilute acid matrix. The results show that the sorbents are capable of fractionating the ions between pH 1–8. Acetate and total metal ion concentrations were experimentally evaluated as factors that could affect retention using La and Ba surrogates. Pseudo-second order rate constants were derived and the uptake of La was determined to be endothermic. A stationary zirconia column was used to isolate Ba from La and Ra from Ac/Pb; elution profiles of each separation are presented. The utility and implications of these sorbents are discussed with respects to large-scale production of 225 Ac from radium targets. This work was published in 2020 and in 2022.
