Inaugural Technologist in Communities Scanning Tour: Automated and Electrified On-Demand Mobility (Follow-On Summary Report: April 24-25, 2023) [Slides]

In 2023, the Technologist in Communities (TIC) program hosted its inaugural scanning tour across the American Southwest, with a goal of investigating the region's leading public mobility systems and their integration with on-demand public mobility services. The scanning tour concept was inspired by and named after a U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration practice of hosting "scanning tours," both domestically and abroad, to explore innovative transportation practices throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. Guided by the idea that "seeing is believing," scanning tours created opportunities for government and industry representatives to collectively experience new technologies and best practices firsthand. In 2023, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) followed suit by leading the inaugural TIC scanning tour. TIC, part of the Technology Integration program within the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Vehicle Technologies Office, supports positive energy and mobility outcomes in communities across rural to urban contexts. TIC enables technical experts to work directly with leaders and stakeholders in communities and assist them in implementing promising new technologies. This first TIC scanning tour invited NREL, DOE, and industry experts to survey innovative public mobility practices and their integration into public transit systems across the Southwest. The tour's goals included examining the state of innovation in public mobility in cities, communities, and airports; facilitating collaboration between entities; and sparking potential new partnerships. The following report summarizes key findings from the scanning tour.

Modeling evacuation demand during no-notice emergency events: Tour formation behavior

Disastrous events have been drastically increasing – both in frequency and destructive capacity – over the past few years. While advance-notice events have received a great deal of attention in the literature of disaster management, not much attention so far has been given to the no-notice events mainly because of the scarcity of data. As an attempt to address this critical gap, the current study proposes a disaggregate evacuation demand framework to understand evacuees’ travel behavior in case of no-notice emergency events. Here, the proposed framework comprises four main steps of evacuation decision, evacuation planning, tour formation, and activity schedule update. This article is dedicated to the introduction of the framework structure and elaboration on the tour formation step. In this step, we first estimate the total number of intermediate stops, travel time, and distance of the evacuation tours for those who decide to evacuate through a joint modeling structure and then, determine the type of each intermediate stop (if any). It is found that a broad range of factors including evacuees’ demographic profiles, built-environment attributes, and characteristics of the disastrous event plays a significant role in people’s evacuation behavior during no-notice emergency events. The findings of this study can assist responsible agencies in understanding evacuees’ complex behavior, and consequently, in devising effective strategies to alleviate economic damages and casualties resulted by such events.

Oppenheimer biographer tours Lab while movie is filmed locally

While a Hollywood movie crew filmed the Oppenheimer movie in Los Alamos these past few weeks, a special guest stopped by the Lab in between takes and chats with big-name actors. Director Thom Mason invited Kai Bird, co-author of American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, to LANL while Bird was in town. The film’s director, Christopher Nolan, wrote the screenplay based on Bird’s Pulitzer Prize-winning biography, published in 2005. Oppenheimer was a physicist and the Lab’s first director of its wartime mission to secretly create the atomic bombs and help end World War II.

A Guided Tour of ab initio Nuclear Many-Body Theory

Over the last decade, new developments in Similarity Renormalization Group techniques and nuclear many-body methods have dramatically increased the capabilities of ab initio nuclear structure and reaction theory. Ground and excited-state properties can be computed up to the tin region, and from the proton to the presumptive neutron drip lines, providing unprecedented opportunities to confront two- plus three-nucleon interactions from chiral Effective Field Theory with experimental data. In this contribution, I will give a broad survey of the current status of nuclear many-body approaches, and I will use selected results to discuss both achievements and open issues that need to be addressed in the coming decade.
