Two Polymorphs of BaZn 2 P 2 : Crystal Structures, Phase Transition, and Transport Properties

Here, the novel α-BaZn 2 P 2 structural polymorph has been synthesized and structurally characterized for the first time. Its structure, elu-cidated from single crystal X-ray diffraction, indicates that the compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic α-BaCu 2 S 2 structure type, with unit cell parameters a = 9.7567(14) Å, b = 4.1266(6) Å, and c = 10.6000(15) Å. With β-BaZn 2 P 2 being previously iden-tified as belonging to the ThCr 2 Si 2 family, and with the precedent of structural phase transitions between the α-BaCu 2 S 2 type and the ThCr 2 Si 2 type, the potential for the pattern to be extended to the two different structural forms of BaZn 2 P 2 was explored. Thermal analysis suggest that a first order phase transition occurs at ~1123 K, whereby the low-temperature orthorhombic α-phase transforms to a high-temperature tetragonal β-BaZn 2 P 2 ; the structure of which was also studied and confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Preliminary transport properties and band structure calculations indicate that α-BaZn 2 P 2 is a p-type, narrow-gap semiconductor with a direct bandgap (Eg) of 0.5 eV. The Seebeck coefficient, S(T), for the material increases steadily from the room temperature value of 119 µV/K to 184 µV/K at 600 K. The electrical resistivity of α-BaZn 2 P 2 is relatively high, on the order of 40 mΩ·cm, and the ρ(T) dependence shows gradual decrease upon heating. Such behavior is comparable to those of the typical semimetals or degenerate semiconductors. Although the observed values of the as-synthesized samples are not optimal, the carrier concentration can apparently be tuned to fall between the values of metals and semiconductors, thus providing an open window for optimizing this phase towards achieving an enhanced thermoelectric figure of merit zT. The calculated indirect band gap for the β-BaZn 2 P 2 phase is Eg = 0.03 eV which is about an order of magnitude lower than that of α-BaZn 2 P 2 . It is expected that the cage-like structural motif and layered structure possessed by α-BaZn 2 P 2 and β-BaZn 2 P 2 phases, respectively, would promote the realiza-tion of a low thermal conductivity in both compounds.

Evolution of structure and transport properties of the Ba 8 Cu 16 P 30 clathrate-I framework with the introduction of Ga

Two type-I clathrates were synthesized by introducing Ga into the framework of the Ba 8 Cu 16 P 30 type-I clathrate. The introduction of minute amounts of Ga, 1.9% Ga/M total (where M total = Cu + Ga), resulted in the disturbance of the completely ordered Pbcn superstructure of Ba 8 Cu 16 P 30 . Ba 8 Cu 15.43(2) Ga 0.3 P 30.26(3) crystallizes in a partially ordered orthorhombic Pmna clathrate-I superstructure with five out of 15 framework sites being jointly occupied by metal+phosphorus. Increasing the Ga content resulted in all framework sites being occupied by metal + phosphorus in the archetype cubic Pm n clathrate-I crystal structure of Ba 8 Cu 14.5(3) Ga 1.3 P 30.2(4) with 8.2% Ga/M total . A combination of energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy, and single crystal x-ray diffraction was used to determine the structures alongside the compositions. The positional disorder was verified by 31 P solid state NMR spectroscopy. Characterization of the transport properties indicated that the Ga-substituted samples exhibit higher Seebeck coefficients and electrical resistivities compared to its pristine counterpart, in line with the expected reduction of the hole concentration due to Ga/Cu substitution. Moderate improvements in the thermoelectric power factor and overall figure-of-merit were observed for samples with 6.9% and 3.8% Ga/M total as compared to those for the pristine Ba 8 Cu 16 P 30 clathrate. Finally, band structure calculations shed light on how Ga substitution affects the electronic structure and thermoelectric properties of studied clathrates.

Water transport properties of virtual fractal porous media: Implications for the unsaturated transport properties of cement-based materials

Cement-based materials are more and more recognized as fractal materials. From a practical point of view, fractality means that the pore size distribution can be described using fractal scaling law (i.e. power functions). Here, the simplest scaling law making use of a single fractal dimension was used to generate simple and virtual fractal porous media (based on bundles of parallel cylindrical pores). The capillary curve and permeability (relative and intrinsic) of the virtual porous media were then estimated through theoretical and numerical approaches. The results show that: (1) although bereft of any physical basis, van Genuchten equation bears some fractal information; (2) although highly flexible, van Genuchten equation fails to perfectly fit the capillary curves and can thus generate error in inverse analysis (for intrinsic permeability evaluation) and (3) there seems to be a relation between the intrinsic permeability and van Genuchten pressure parameter.

Anisotropic magnetic and transport properties of orthorhombic o-Pr 2 Co 3 Ge 5

Abstract The crystal structure, electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), heat capacity, and anisotropic magnetic and resistivity measurements are reported for Sn flux grown single crystals of orthorhombic Pr 2 Co 3 Ge 5 (U 2 Co 3 Si 5 -type, Ibam ). Our findings show that o -Pr 2 Co 3 Ge 5 hosts nearly trivalent Pr ions, as evidenced by EELS and fits to temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements. Complex magnetic ordering with a partially spin-polarized state emerges near T sp = 32 K, with a spin reconfiguration transition near T M = 15 K. Heat capacity measurements show that the phase transitions appear as broad peaks in the vicinity of T sp and T M . The magnetic entropy further reveals that crystal electric field splitting lifts the Hund’s rule degeneracy at low temperatures. Taken together, these measurements show that Pr 2 Co 3 Ge 5 is an environment for complex f state magnetism with potential strongly correlated electron states.

Ab initio Molecular Dynamics Assessment of Thermodynamic and Transport Properties in (K,Li)Cl and (K, Na)Cl Molten Salt Mixtures

Molten salt mixtures are integral part of highly important technological applications such as nuclear reactors. However, due to inherent difficulties associated with experiment at high temperatures and the intrinsic complexity of liquid-phase multi-component systems, understanding their properties at a molecular level remains a challenge. Here, we report on an ab initio molecular dynamics investigation on structural, electronic, transport, and thermal properties of two common molten salt mixtures, (K, Li)Cl and (K,Na)Cl, at five different compositions and three temperatures. Most of the properties were found to depend on both composition and temperature. While properties, like atomic charges, show additive behaviors, other properties, such as electrical conductivity, show considerable deviations from additivity. We shall show that the mixing of the molten salt mixtures is mainly driven by entropy, and that the KCl and LiCl mix better than KCl and NaCl. Our computational results are in general consistent with available experimental data. Comparison with available theoretical data is also provided.

Heat transfer and transport property contrast effects on the compressible Rayleigh-Taylor instability

In extreme environments, the Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) may occur under large variations in density and temperature and with fluid transport properties strongly dependent on temperature. Direct numerical simulations of the 3D fully compressible RTI are conducted, examining the idealized configuration of a hotter, less dense fluid pushing against a colder, denser fluid. Various temperature ratios and transport property configurations are explored to examine how heat conduction, large variations in transport properties, and sudden changes in transport properties can affect the evolution of the mixing layer. Nonuniform fluid expansion and contraction induced by heat transfer can significantly affect local density differences and overall instability growth, causing profile asymmetries about the initial interface for flow and mixing statistics. The departures from classical self-similar development of the instability along with misalignment between regions of mixing and regions of most intense turbulent activity caused by both heat transfer and transport property contrasts are examined. After sudden changes in fluid transport properties, which may occur as a result of rapid heating (e.g., in inertial confinement fusion), the flow quickly responds and begins to relax towards quasi-self-similar late-time evolution. For many dynamical quantities such as vorticity and dissipation, this late-time evolution resembles that of the configuration that already started with the final transport property magnitudes, suggesting that these quantities depend only on the transport properties and not on past flow history, provided that the density field distributions for the flows remain similar. On the other hand, the mixing evolution after the transport property change is unique, implying that both property magnitudes and previous history are impactful on the mixing. In conclusion, these simulations demonstrate how various temperature-related effects are extremely important to consider in compressible RTI flows with large temperature variations.

COWALKER:EFFECTIVE TRANSPORT PROPERTIES OF COMPOSITE MATERIALS

SF-23-026 This software computes effective transport properties of composite materials involving fibers and nanoparticles using a random-walk algorithm that efficiently scales to an arbitrary number of processes and cores. Effective transport properties (thermal, electrical) are key to bridge the microstructure of complex materials with its macroscopic behavior. Traditional approaches either use effective medium approximations (closed mathematical expressions that are approximation for certain conditions) or continuum simulation models such as finite element or finite volume, which require the generation of a mesh for each configuration explored. cowalker leverages the equivalence between laplacian or heat equation-based models and random walks to compute the asymptotic transport properties from an ensemble of first sojourn times of a random walker moving through the composite material. This allows us to directly define a composite material as a collection of particles and use algorithms developed for molecular dynamics to quickly compute the intersection of the walker with the different interfaces in the material. cowalker is developed in C++, and it relies on the GNU Scientific Library for random generation. cowalker is currently delivered as source code, so the GSL library is not included in cowalker's distribution. A more userfriendly version, cowalker.jl is currently in development and will be released as part of cowalker.

Synthesis and transport properties of epitaxial Bi (111) films on GaAs (111) substrates

In recent decades, the growth of ultrathin epitaxial bismuth (Bi) films on various substrates has garnered interest due to their unique electronic properties. We report upon the growth and electrical transport properties of epitaxial Bi (111) films in the thickness range of 5–32 nm deposited directly on GaAs (111) substrates, without a buffer layer. The quality of Bi films is found to depend on conditions for substrate treatment using Ar + ion-milling and annealing. Substrates milled at low ion beam currents display poor surface reconstruction after annealing, which hinders the growth of high-quality films. In contrast, substrates milled under optimized conditions led to reconstructed surfaces upon annealing, resulting in epitaxial Bi films with predominantly single-domain orientation. Although epitaxial films formed in both cases, transport measurements indicated significantly higher conductivity for films grown on optimally treated substrates. Measurements at low temperatures suggest that the transport properties are dominated by a surface state with high mobility electrons. Magneto-transport measurements suggest that conductivity and mobility improve progressively with increasing film thickness. For the thinnest 5 nm film, a hole-like state emerges, presumably as the electron-like state is gapped out. These results provide a robust methodology for growing high-quality epitaxial Bi films on GaAs (111) and offer insights into their unique transport properties and our ability to tune them.

Effect of heterostructure engineering on electronic structure and transport properties of two-dimensional halide perovskites

Organic-inorganic halide perovskite solar cells have attracted much attention due to their low-cost fabrication, flexibility, and high-power conversion efficiency. More recent efforts show that the reduction from three- to two-dimensions (2D) of organic–inorganic halide perovskites promises an exciting opportunity to tune their electronic properties. Here, we explore the effect of reduced dimensionality and heterostructure engineering on the intrinsic material properties, such as energy stability, bandgap and transport properties of 2D hybrid organic–inorganic halide perovskites using first-principles density functional theory. We show that the energy stability of engineered perovskite heterostructures is significantly enhanced. The heterostructures with improved stability also show excellent transport properties similar to their bulk counterparts. Furthermore, these layered chemistries demonstrate the advantage of a broad range of tunable bandgaps and high-absorption coefficient in the visible spectrum. The proposed 2D heterostructured material holds potential for nano-optoelectronic devices as well as for effective photovoltaics.

Hydration and transport properties of cesium hydroxide and mixed cesium hydroxide–sodium nitrite aqueous solutions

Here, this study explores the hydration and transport properties of aqueous cesium hydroxide (CsOH) solution, with or without 1 molar (M) sodium nitrite (NaNO 2 ). Historic studies of electrolyte solutions indicate that Cs + ions decrease viscosity and increase diffusion rates, whereas OH − ions have the opposite effect. Here, the influence of OH − was dominant in CsOH solutions, leading to increased viscosity and reduced diffusion rates. There was a linear relationship between diffusion coefficients and water activity, emphasizing the significant role of ion–water interactions in determining transport properties. This may be because the interaction between Cs + and the anions is weak even when they are in direct contact with each other. The weakness of the ion-pairing was established through thermodynamic analysis. The findings suggest that ion-pairing is not the only important interaction controlling transport properties when ion-pairing is weak. Nonetheless, ion-pairing or obstructions did result in more sluggish transport properties as electrolyte concentrations increased. Overall, the research enhances the understanding of the complexities underlying ion interactions in multicomponent solutions.

Enhancement of 2D topological semimetal transport properties by current annealing

Observation of intrinsic quantum transport properties of two-dimensional (2D) topological semimetals can be challenging due to suppression of high mobility caused by extrinsic factors introduced during fabrication. We demonstrate current annealing as a method to substantially improve electronic transport properties of 2D topological semimetal flakes. Contact resistance and resistivity were improved by factors up to 2 × 10 6 and 2 × 10 4 , respectively, in devices based on exfoliated flakes of two topological semimetals, ZrSiSe and BaMnSb 2 . Using this method, carrier mobility in ZrSiSe was improved by a factor of 3800, resulting in observation of record-high mobility for exfoliated ZrSiSe. Quantum oscillations in annealed ZrSiSe appeared at magnetic fields as low as 5 T, and magnetoresistance increased by a factor of 10 4 . We argue that a thermal process underlies this improvement. Finally, Raman spectroscopy and analysis of quantum oscillations in ZrSiSe indicate that the phonon modes and Fermi surface area are unchanged by current annealing.
