Transverse Mode Dynamics of VCSELs Undergoing Current Modulation

Transverse mode dynamics of a 20-micron-diameter vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) undergoing gain switching by deep current modulation is studied numerically. The direct current (dc) level is set slightly below threshold and is modulated by a large alternating current (ac). The resulting optical pulse train and transverse-mode patterns are obtained numerically. The ac frequency is varied from 2.5 GHz to 10 GHz, and the ac amplitude is varied from one-half to four times that of the dc level. At high modulation frequencies, a regular pulse train is not generated unless the ac amplitude is large enough. At all modulation frequencies, the transverse spatial profile switches from single-mode to multiple-mode pattern as the ac pumping level is increased. Optical pulse widths vary in the range 5-30 ps. with the pulse width decreasing when either the frequency is increased or the ac amplitude is decreased. The numerical modeling uses an approximation form of the semiconductor Maxwell-Bloch equations. Temporal evolution of the spatial profiles of the laser (and of carrier density) is determined without any assumptions about the type or number of modes. Low-threshold, single-transverse-mode, 940-nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser with a mode filter and half-wavelength cavity

We demonstrate a structure for a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) with a mode filter and half-wavelength (λ/2) cavity. The effects of λ/2- and λ-cavities on the threshold current are studied. The thickness and etched diameter of the mode filter are optimised to achieve single-transverse-mode output. The results show that when changing from λ-cavity to λ/2-cavity, the threshold current of the VCSEL decreases by 30.7% (from 0.85 mA to 0.65 mA). In addition, for the mode-filter thickness of 80 nm, and the etched diameter of 2.5 μm, the side mode suppression ratio reaches 90 dB, which meets the requirement of single-transverse-mode output. The VCSELs with the optimised design can overcome many difficulties and have great potential in 3D face recognition. (paper)

Simulation of Transverse Modes in Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers

An approximation to the Maxwell-Semiconductor Bloch equations is solved for the transverse modes of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers. A finite-difference algorithm will be used to calculate the detailed time evolution of the transverse mode profiles of VCSELs. Effects of pumping current and refractive index profiles will be investigated.

Frequency stabilization and transverse mode discrimination in injection-seeded unstable resonator TEA CO2 lasers

Longitudinal mode selection by injection has been demonstrated as a viable technique for TEA-CO2 lasers with pulse energies of a Joule or greater. Once reliable generation of single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) pulses is obtained, the characteristics and the causes of intrapulse frequency variation can be studied. These include the effect of the decaying plasma, the thermal gradient due to the energy dissipation associated with the laser mechanism itself, and the pressure shift of the center frequency of the laser transition. The use of the positive-branch unstable resonator as an efficient means of coupling a discharge with large spatial dimensions to an optical cavity mode introduces another concern: namely, what can be done to emphasize transverse mode discrimination in an unstable resonator cavity while maintaining high coupling efficiency. These issues are discussed in this paper, and relevant experimental results are included.

Transverse mode analysis for free-space laser beams using Bayesian analysis

Reliable and rapid assessment of the transverse mode quality of a free-space laser beam has a wide range of applications in laser development, research, and utilization. It has become even more important with recent advances in developing orbital angular momentum photon beams across a broad spectral region. In this work, a general modal analysis method for a free-space multimode laser beam has been developed based on Bayesian analysis. After transforming mode decomposition into a linear system problem, a Gaussian probabilistic model is used to find a closed-form solution. The method is found to be robust with the presence of Gaussian noise. Prior knowledge about the mode content can be incorporated into the method to improve the solution for situations when coherent disturbances or contamination are present in the laser beam. This method can be used to analyze the mode content for laser beams in different bases, such as Hermite–Gaussian (HG) modes and Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) modes. Three applications of this method are presented: a detailed modal analysis of the beam image from the incoherent intensity addition of HG modes and two examples of mode decomposition using the complex wavefront from the coherent superposition of HG and LG modes. The feasibility of this method is demonstrated using various simulation results. Based on digital images of a laser beam recorded without complex wavelength-limiting optics, in principle, this method can be used in a wide wavelength range from infrared to ultraviolet, and possibly x ray.

Transverse Mode Dynamics of Broad-Area Edge- and Surface-Emitting Lasers

This paper reports new results of our recent theoretical and simulational research in broad-area diode lasers. In a broad-area edge- or surface-emitting laser, the large space dimension in the direction transverse to the propagation direction requires an adequate treatment of inhomogeneities of the relevant physical quantities, such as laser field intensity and electron-hole carrier densities. The density inhomogeneity requires gain and refractive index nonlinearities across the laser structure to be included. All these features can be captured by a set of space-time resolved partial differential equations, the so-called effective Bloch equations established recently. We have solved this set of equations for both edge-emitting and surface-emitting lasers. This allows us to investigate temporal dynamics of transverse mode structures in these lasers. The influence of the transverse pumping profile and geometrical structure of the devices will be reported for VCSELs, as well as the complex temporal competition dynamics of different modes.

Interaction of a turbulent-jet noise source with transverse modes in a rectangular duct

A turbulent jet was used to excite transverse acoustic modes in a rectangular duct. The pressure spectrum showed asymmetric singularities (pressure spikes) at the resonant frequencies of the duct modes. This validates previously published theoretical results. These pressure spikes occurred over a range of jet velocities, orientations, and inlet turbulence levels. At the frequency of the spike, the measured transverse pressure shape matched the resonant mode shape.

Transverse Mode Dynamics of VCSELs Through Space-Time Domain Simulation

Modeling and simulation are important to understand laser operation and to optimize and design device functions. Numerical simulation of VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers) has been largely based on solving time-independent Helmholtz equation or time dependent coupled mode equations. There are various advantages for choosing these approaches. However, the disadvantages are also apparent. The former cannot handle dynamical mode competition seen in VCSELs, while the latter assumes a given type and number of modes a priori. Furthermore, the microscopic physics of heterstructures and electron-hole plasma is very often represented by a few parameters such as linear gain coefficients and the linewidth enhancement factor. These are over simplification of space and frequency (wavelength) dependent gain and refractive index functions. When the space-time dynamical operation of VCSELs becomes important, these simple approximations become questionable. In this paper, we apply a recently developed model for edge-emitting lasers to a gain guided VCSEL for space-time domain simulation. This model takes into account the actual nonlinear dependence of gain and refractive index on frequency and carrier density within the frame work of the effective Bloch equations. The corresponding partial differential equations are solved directly by finite difference methods. Laser behavior with increasing pumping current is investigated in detail. Special attention is paid to the dynamical competition of the transverse modes.

Longitudinal and transverse modes of slosh wave excitation in rotating dewar associated with gravity jitters

Characteristics of slosh waves based on the dynamical behavior of oscillations at the liquid-vapor interface have been investigated. Twelve case studies of slosh wave excitation due to various frequencies of gravity jitters under different rotating speeds of the propellant tank and different levels of background gravity environment have been simulated. The study shows that slosh waves excited inside the spacecraft propellant tank are characterized by the lowest frequency of the waves initiated, frequencies of the gravity jitters imposed on the propellant system, the levels of background gravity environment, and dewar rotating speeds. Conditions for suppression and amplification of the slosh waves are discussed.

Transverse Mode Electron Beam Microwave Generator

An electron beam microwave device having an evacuated interaction chamber to which are coupled a resonant cavity which has an opening between the resonant cavity and the evacuated interaction chamber and an electron gun which causes a narrow beam of electrons to traverse the evacuated interaction chamber. The device also contains a mechanism for feeding back a microwave electromagnetic field from the resonant cavity to the evacuated interaction chamber in such a way as to modulate the direction of propagation of the electron beam, thereby further amplifyjng the microwave electromagnetic field. Furthermore, provision is made for coupling the electromagnetic field out of the electron beam microwave device.
