Application of the Trio-Tri-Star Carpal Wrist for use in a Solar Array Tracking Mechanism for the Momentum-eXchange/Electrodynamic Reboost (MXER) Tether Concept

This paper describes the application of the Trio-Tri-Star Carpal Wrist to the Momentum Exchange Electro-Dynamic Re-boost (MXER) tether, an advanced space transportation concept being developed by the In-Space Propulsion Technology Office at NASA s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Dr. Joseph Bonometti and Mr. Kirk Sorensen are the principal engineers. In the paper, a brief overview of the MXER concept is given, with an emphasis on the design problem that this wrist is designed to address. The Trio-Tri-Star Carpal Wrist, a three degree of freedom parallel manipulator, invented by Dr. Stephen J. Canfield of Tennessee Tech University, is described with an overview of wrist geometry, kinematics, and stress analysis. A working model of the wrist was assembled at MSFC using Dr. Canfield s prototype to demonstrate its operation. Finally, a design description and supporting analysis of a MXER flight concept wrist is given, with recommendations for future development work.

TRIO: Turbulent Response in Oxygen

This project was designed to build on the results from the successful launch of the Turbulent Oxygen Mixing Experiment (TOMEX) mother-daughter (instrumented and chemical-release) payload (21.126) that was launched in October 2000 from the White Sands Missile Range. The overall science objective was to investigate the evolution of the atmospheric response. at altitudes between 80 and 120 km, to the presence of unstable regions with vertical scales of the order of 1 to 10 km. TRIO was designed to use Na lidar measurements from the MAUUMALT observation on MAUI with a launch of a payload from Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF), located on Kauai. During this project, Aerospace participated in a Mission Initiation Conference. put together a science requirements document. performed a site visit to PMRF. prepared a CDR document. and developed a production and calibration procedure for one of the payload instruments. the 3-channel photometer. Unfortunately. NASA decided to terminate the program because of unforeseen (by NASA) range costs. This CDR document represents our view of this project at termination and provides a roadmap to perform this experiment should it be proposed again.

A Trio of Gamma-Ray Burst Supernovae: GRB 120729A, GRB 130215ASN 2013ez, and GRB 130831ASN 2013fu

We present optical and near-infrared (NIR) photometry for three gamma-ray burst supernovae (GRB-SNe): GRB 120729A, GRB 130215A/SN 2013ez, and GRB 130831A/SN 2013fu. For GRB 130215A/SN 2013ez, we also present optical spectroscopy at t - t Sub 0) = 16.1 d, which covers rest-frame 3000-6250 A. Based on Fe ii 5169 and Si ii 6355, our spectrum indicates an unusually low expansion velocity of approximately 4000-6350 km s-1, the lowest ever measured for a GRB-SN. Additionally, we determined the brightness and shape of each accompanying SN relative to a template supernova (SN 1998bw), which were used to estimate the amount of nickel produced via nucleosynthesis during each explosion. We find that our derived nickel masses are typical of other GRB-SNe, and greater than those of SNe Ibc that are not associated with GRBs. For GRB 130831A/SN 2013fu, we used our well-sampled R-band light curve (LC) to estimate the amount of ejecta mass and the kinetic energy of the SN, finding that these too are similar to other GRB-SNe. For GRB 130215A, we took advantage of contemporaneous optical/NIR observations to construct an optical/NIR bolometric LC of the afterglow. We fit the bolometric LC with the millisecond magnetar model of Zhang & Mészáros (2001, ApJ, 552, L35), which considers dipole radiation as a source of energy injection to the forward shock powering the optical/NIR afterglow. Using this model we derive an initial spin period of P = 12 ms and a magnetic field of B = 1.1 10(exp 15) G, which are commensurate with those found for proposed magnetar central engines of other long-duration GRBs.

Lumley's PODT definition of large eddies and a trio of numerical procedures

Lumley's 1967 Moscow paper provided, for the first time, a completely rational definition of the physically-useful term 'large eddy', popular for a half-century. The numerical procedures based upon his results are: (1) PODT (Proper Orthogonal Decomposition Theorem), which extracts the Large Eddy structure of stochastic processes from physical or computer simulation two-point covariances, and 2) LEIM (Large-Eddy Interaction Model), a predictive scheme for the dynamical large eddies based upon higher order turbulence modeling. Earlier Lumley's work (1964) forms the basis for the final member of the triad of numerical procedures: this predicts the global neutral modes of turbulence which have surprising agreement with both structural eigenmodes and those obtained from the dynamical equations. The ultimate goal of improved engineering design tools for turbulence may be near at hand, partly due to the power and storage of 'supermicrocomputer' workstations finally becoming adequate for the demanding numerics of these procedures.

An Evolving Trio of Hybrid Stars: C 111

Our goal is to understand the behavior of the outer atmosphere in this intermediate stage to create a comprehensive picture of atmospheric evolution. In the hybrid phase, the large-scale magnetic dynamo activity decays and hydrodynamic processes assume importance. Some hot plasma is still confined close to the star by magnetic loops, yet the confining field is breaking open, the atmosphere can escape through these open field lines, and the diffuse corona may be warm. There may well be a more extended and variable transition process. It remains for FUSE to identify the controlling parameters of the hybrid stars. It shows the positions of our 3 targets in the color-magnitude diagram where it is seen that they are at the extreme end of the hybrid region. Originally we had been awarded the hybrid star Iota Aur, but due to newly imposed pointing constraints of FUSE, that target was not accessible. And so we substituted Iota Dra, a giant of mass similar to our other targets but less evolved. In addition, Iota Dra was recently found to harbor a sub-stellar objects, possibly a planet, and so it could reveal the stellar environment of the planet. This substitution was accepted.

Plants, plant pathogens, and microgravity--a deadly trio

Plants grown in spaceflight conditions are more susceptible to colonization by plant pathogens. The underlying causes for this enhanced susceptibility are not known. Possibly the formation of structural barriers and the activation of plant defense response components are impaired in spaceflight conditions. Either condition would result from altered gene expression of the plant. Because of the tools available, past studies focused on a few physiological responses or biochemical pathways. With recent advances in genomics research, new tools, including microarray technologies, are available to examine the global impact of growth in the spacecraft on the plant's gene expression profile. In ground-based studies, we have developed cDNA subtraction libraries of rice that are enriched for genes induced during pathogen infection and the defense response. Arrays of these genes are being used to dissect plant defense response pathways in a model system involving wild-type rice plants and lesion mimic mutants. The lesion mimic mutants are ideal experimental tools because they erratically develop defense response-like lesions in the absence of pathogens. The gene expression profiles from these ground-based studies will provide the molecular basis for understanding the biochemical and physiological impacts of spaceflight on plant growth, development and disease defense responses. This, in turn, will allow the development of strategies to manage plant disease for life in the space environment.

An evolving trio of hybrid stars: C111

Hybrid stars are a class of cool, luminous single stars originally identified based on the appearance of their ultraviolet IUE spectra. C IV emission is present (signifying temperatures of at least lo5 K), and asymmetric emission cores of Mg I1 are found, accompanied by absorption features at low and high velocities, indicating a massive stellar wind and circumstellar material. Many members of this class have been identified and X-rays have been detected from most hybrids. They represent the critical evolutionary state between coronal-like objects and the Alpha Ori-like objects and assume a pivotal role in the definition of coronal evolution, atmospheric heating processes, and mechanisms to drive winds of cool stars.

HD 28109 Hosts A Trio of Transiting Neptunian Planets Including A Near-Resonant Pair, Confirmed By ASTEP From Antarctica

We report on the discovery and characterization of three planets orbiting the F8 star HD 28109, which sits comfortably in TESS ’s continuous viewing zone. The two outer planets have periods of 56 . 0067 ±0 . 0003 d and 84 . 2597 + 0 . 0010 −0 . 0008 d, which implies a period ratio very close to that of the first-order 3:2 mean motion resonance, exciting transit timing variations (TTVs) of up to 60 min. These two planets were first identified by TESS , and we identified a third planet in the TESS photometry with a period of 22 . 8911 ±0 . 0004 d. We confirm the planetary nature of all three planetary candidates using ground-based photometry from Hazelwood , ASTEP , and LCO , including a full detection of the ∼9 h transit of HD 28109 c from Antarctica. The radii of the three planets are R b = 2 . 199 + 0 . 098 −0 . 10 R ⊕, R c = 4 . 23 ±0 . 11 R ⊕, and R d = 3 . 25 ±0 . 11 R ⊕; we characterize their masses using TTVs and precise radial velocities from ESPRESSO and HARPS, and find them to be M b = 18 . 5 + 9 . 1 −7 . 6 M ⊕, M c = 7 . 9 + 4 . 2 −3 . 0 M ⊕, and M d = 5 . 7 + 2 . 7 −2 . 1 M ⊕, making planet b a dense, massive planet while c and d are both underdense. We also demonstrate that the two outer planets are ripe for atmospheric characterization using transmission spectroscopy, especially given their position in the CVZ of James Webb Space Telescope . The data obtained to date are consistent with resonant (librating) and non-resonant (circulating) solutions; additional observations will show whether the pair is actually locked in resonance or just near-resonant.

Pallasites - Metal composition, classification and relationships with iron meteorites

A comparative study was conducted of the metal composition of 34 pallasites in order to shed further light on the origin of these meteorites. Concentrations of Au, As, Co, Ga, Ge, Ir, Ni, and W in pallasitic metal were determined. Most pallasites are found to have similar compositions indicating a close genetic relationship, and are designated as main group. The Eagle Station Trio is unrelated to the main group as indicated by higher Ni, Ge, and Ir and lower As, Au, and Ga contents in the metal, and olivine richer in Fe and Sc and poorer in Mg and Mn. The trio of Springwater, Rawlinna and Phillips County have metal compositions appropriate to high-Ni main group members, but their fayalite contents suggest they are not closely related to it. Pavlodar and Glorieta Mountain appear to be unique pallasites, and Brenham an anomalous main group member. Krasnoyarsk is classified as a main group member. Main group pallasites have metal compositions which overlap those of IIIAB iron meteorites on a Ga-Ge plot, and they have similar Au, As, Cr, Ir, Ni and W contents to high-Ni IIIAB irons.

An integrated software suite for surface-based analyses of cerebral cortex

The authors describe and illustrate an integrated trio of software programs for carrying out surface-based analyses of cerebral cortex. The first component of this trio, SureFit (Surface Reconstruction by Filtering and Intensity Transformations), is used primarily for cortical segmentation, volume visualization, surface generation, and the mapping of functional neuroimaging data onto surfaces. The second component, Caret (Computerized Anatomical Reconstruction and Editing Tool Kit), provides a wide range of surface visualization and analysis options as well as capabilities for surface flattening, surface-based deformation, and other surface manipulations. The third component, SuMS (Surface Management System), is a database and associated user interface for surface-related data. It provides for efficient insertion, searching, and extraction of surface and volume data from the database.

Spectroscopic studies of the solar corona at X-ray wavelengths

The spatial distribution of emission in several X-ray lines is discussed with emphasis on temperature dependence and association with active regions. Results are presented for the trio of helium-like O VII lines which demonstrate (1) a spatial variation in the density-dependent forbidden-to-intersystem line ratio, and (2) a strong spatial variation in the intensity of the O VII resonance line relative to the optically forbidden transitions. The second effect appears to be caused by resonance scattering by material in the line of sight.

Siderophiles in the Brachina meteorite - Impact melting

Oxygen isotope ratios, siderophile abundances, and siderophile ratios for the Brachina meteorite (a chassignite) are compared with data reported for various chassignites, shergottites, nakhlites, pallasites, iron meteorites, chondrites, lunar low-Ti basalts, and terrestrial basalts. The results show that Brachina is different in origin from other shergottites, nakhlites, and chassignites. It is suggested that all the chassignites, shergottites, and nakhlites could have formed on Mars in an impact event about 180 million yr ago and that Brachina may have been ejected from Mars as a large tektitelike impact-melt blob consisting of Chassigny-like target material and a small amount of Eagle Station trio-like pallasite material.

Investigation of surface tension phenomena using the KC-135 aircraft

The microgravity environment of the KC-135 aircraft was utilized in three experiments designed to determine the following: (1) the feasibility of measuring critical wetting temperatures; (2) the effectiveness of surface tension as a means of keeping the cushioning heat transfer liquid in the furnace during ampoule translation; and (3) whether a non-wetting fluid would separate from the ampoule wall under low gravity conditions. This trio of investigations concerning surface phenomena demonstrates the effectiveness of the KC-135 as a microgravity research environment for small-scale, hand-held experiments.

The progenitor of SN 1987A - Spatially resolved ultraviolet spectroscopy of the supernova field

Careful deconvolution of spatially resolved IUE ultraviolet spectra shows that only two of the three stars detected in plate material before 1987 are now present near the site of SN 1987A. The separation, magnitudes, and spectra of these two are consistent with their identification as star 2 and star 3 of the Sanduleak -69 deg 202 trio. The clear implication is that star 1, the 12th mag B3 I star, has disappeared, and it may be identified as the progenitor of SN 1987A.

Electrochemical measurements and thermodynamic calculations of redox equilibria in pallasite meteorites - Implications for the eucrite parent body

The intrinsic oxygen fugacity (IOF) of olivine separates from the Salta, Springwater, and Eagle Station pallasites was measured between 850 and 1150 C using oxygen-specific solid zirconia electrolytes at 100,000 Pa. Thermodynamic calculations of redox equilibria involving equalibrium pallasite assemblages are in good agreement with the experimental results and provide a lower limit to pallasite redox stability; others involving disequilibrium assemblages, suggest that pallasites experienced localized, late-stage oxidation and reduction effects. Consideration of the redox buffer metal-olivine-orthopyroxene utilizing calculated Eucrite Parent Body (EPB) mantle phase compositions indicates that small redox gradients may have existed in the EPB. Such gradients may have produced strong compositional variation within the EPB. In addition, there is apparently significant redox heterogeneity in the source area of Eagle Station Trio pallasites and Bocaiuva iron meteorites.

The optical very large array and its moon-based version

An Optical Very Large Array (OVLA) is currently in early prototyping stages for ground-based sites, such as Mauna Kea and perhaps the VLT site in Chile. Its concept is also suited for a moon-based interferometer. With a ring of bi-dimensionally mobile telescopes, there is maximal flexibility in the aperture pattern, and no need for delay lines. A circular configuration of many free-flying telescopes, TRIO, is also considered for space interferometers. Finally, the principle of gaseous mirrors may become applicable for moon-based optical arrays. Fifteen years after the first coherent linkage of two optical telescopes, the design of an ambitious imaging array, the OVLA, is now well advanced. Two 1.5 m telescopes have been built and now provide astronomical results. Elements of the OVLA are under construction. Although primarily conceived for ground-based sites, the OVLA structure appears to meet the essential requirements for operation on the Moon.

Abundance inhomogeneities and atmospheric structure in CN-bimodal globular cluster giants

It has been suggested by several authors that the sodium and aluminum abundance variations correlating with CN-band strength, frequently observed in CN-bimodal globular cluster giants, could be spurious manifestations of different temperature structures in the 'CN-strong' and 'CN-weak' stars, caused by different molecular line blanketing related to the C, N, and O trio. For stellar parameters generally appropriate to giants in the intermediate metallicity CN-bimodal cluster M4, we demonstrate through new model atmosphere calculations, employing opacity sampling and spherical geometry, that the observed abundance anomalies cannot be the result of atmospheric temperature structure. Our results using spherical geometry are compared to identical calculations performed with plane-parallel geometry: the effects of atmospheric extension on derived abundances for all lines considered amount to less than 0.1 dex.
