Dynamical phase transition in a strongly hybridized phonon-triplon chain

In this article, we study a dimerized spin-1/2 chain, such as CuGeO 3 , hosting triplon excitations coupled to optical phonons under weak terahertz laser driving. Both phonons and triplons weakly lose energy into the surrounding baths, forming a non-equilibrium steady state. In the strong phonon-triplon coupling regime, phonons near the two-triplon continuum hybridize strongly with triplons. Using mean-field Lindblad dynamics, we show that strong hybridization induces sharp first-order phase transitions—either single or simultaneous double—in the emission spectrum, mainly due to nonlinearities in the chain and the instantaneous breaking of spatial inversion symmetry, as captured by the phonon displacement. Using mean-field Floquet analysis of harmonic modes in both sectors, we analytically confirm the existence of these phase transitions. Furthermore, we map the complete steady-state phase diagram by varying key control parameters and provide experimentally relevant parameters for observing these transitions in laser-driven CuGeO 3 .

Localized triplons and site stuffing in the quantum dimer magnet BiYbGeO5

Thermodynamic and muon spin relaxation measurements have recently highlighted BiYbGeO5 as a new example of a rare-earth-based quantum dimer magnet with isolated Yb3+ spin-1/2 dimers. However, direct spectroscopic evidence of the triplet excitations and measurements of the structural disorder are lacking. In this work, polycrystalline BiYbGeO5 was synthesized using conventional high-temperature solid-state methods and investigated via high-resolution neutron powder diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering. Diffraction measurements down to 58 mK reveal no signatures of magnetic order and indicate that nearly 20% of Yb3+ sites are replaced by nonmagnetic Bi3+, introducing significant structural disorder. Inelastic neutron scattering shows dispersionless triplon excitations, consistent with localized, noninteracting spin dimers. Fits to the triplet excitation spectrum with an XXZ-type anisotropic exchange give 𝐽XX=0.100⁢(1)⁢meV and 𝐽Z=0.202⁢(1)⁢meV. These findings establish BiYbGeO5 as a structurally disordered but magnetically well-isolated quantum dimer system, providing a model platform for studying the resilience of entangled spin states to site dilution.

BCS-BEC crossover in a (t 2g ) 4 excitonic magnet

The condensation of spin-orbit-induced excitons in t 2 g 4 electronic systems is attracting considerable attention. At large Hubbard U , antiferromagnetism was proposed to emerge from the Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) of triplons ( J eff = 1 ). Furthermore, we show that even at intermediate U regimes, the spin-orbit exciton condensation is possible leading also to staggered magnetic order. The canonical electron-hole excitations (excitons) transform into local triplon excitations at large U , and this BEC strong coupling regime is smoothly connected to the intermediate U excitonic insulator region. We solved the degenerate three-orbital Hubbard model with spin-orbit coupling ( λ ) in one dimension using the density matrix renormalization group, while in two dimensions we use the Hartree-Fock approximation (HFA). Employing these techniques, we provide the full λ versus U phase diagrams for both one- and two-dimensional lattices. Our main result is that at intermediate Hubbard U , increasing λ at fixed U the system transitions from an incommensurate spin-density-wave metal to a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) excitonic insulator, with coherence length r coh of O ( a ) and O ( 10 a ) in 1 d and 2 d , respectively, with a being the lattice spacing. Further increasing λ , the system eventually crosses over to the BEC limit (with r coh ≪ a ).

Dynamical properties of a driven dissipative dimerized $S$ =1/2 chain

We consider the dynamical properties of a gapped quantum spin system coupled to the electric field of a laser, which drives the resonant excitation of specific phonon modes that modulate the magnetic interactions. Here, we deduce the quantum master equations governing the time-evolution of both the lattice and spin sectors, by developing a Lindblad formalism with bath operators providing an explicit description of their respective phonon-mediated damping terms. We investigate the nonequilibrium steady states (NESS) of the spin system established by a continuous driving, delineating parameter regimes in driving frequency, damping, and spin-phonon coupling for the establishment of physically meaningful NESS and their related nontrivial properties. Focusing on the regime of generic weak spin-phonon coupling, we characterize the NESS by their frequency and wave-vector content, explore their transient and relaxation behavior, and discuss the energy flow, the system temperature, and the critical role of the type of bath adopted. Our study lays a foundation for the quantitative modeling of experiments currently being designed to control coherent many-body spin states in quantum magnetic materials.

Large-𝑁 SU(4) Schwinger boson theory for coupled-dimer antiferromagnets

Here, we develop a systematic large-𝑁 expansion based on the Schwinger boson representation of SU(4) coherent states of dimers for the paradigmatic spin-1/2 bilayer square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. This system exhibits a quantum phase transition between a quantum paramagnetic state and a Néel order state, driven by the coupling constant 𝑔 = 𝐽′/𝐽, which is defined as the ratio between the interdimer 𝐽′ and intradimer 𝐽 exchange interactions. We demonstrate that this approach accurately describes static and dynamic properties on both sides of the quantum phase transition. The critical coupling constant 𝑔 𝑐 ≈ 0.42 and the dynamic spin structure factor reproduce quantum Monte Carlo results with high precision. Notably, the 1/𝑁 corrections reveal the longitudinal mode of the magnetically ordered phase along with the overdamping caused by its decay into the two-magnon continuum. The present large-𝑁 SU(4) Schwinger boson theory can be extended to more general cases of quantum paramagnets that undergo a quantum phase transition into magnetically ordered states.
