High-pressure structural behavior and elastic properties of U3Si5: A combined synchrotron XRD and DFT study

We present an integrated experimental and theoretical study of the structural behavior of U 3 Si 5 at highpressure conditions using angle-dispersive synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) in a diamond anvil cell (DAC) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. On increasing pressure, the ambient hexagonal structure of U 3 Si 5 with space group P6/mmm remains stable up to 16.7 GPa, the maximum pressure tested with DAC. The bulk modulus and the a- and c-axial moduli of U 3 Si 5 were experimentally determined to be 126 ± 4 GPa, 173 ± 8 GPa and 79.7 ± 4.3 GPa, respectively. Thus an anisotropy in the axial compressibility of U 3 Si 5 is observed with its c-axis being more compressible than the a-axis. Our DFT calculation results are in general agreement with the experimental values, including reproducing the compressibility anisotropy. A comparison of the bulk modulus of U 3 Si 5 to those of other U-Si compounds reveals a general trend that the bulk modulus of U-Si decreases with increasing U/(U+Si) ratio.

Post-irradiation examination of low burnup U 3 Si 5 and UN-U 3 Si 5 composite fuels

Here this work presents post-irradiation examination data on UN-U 3 Si 5 and U 3 Si 5 fuels at low burnup (i.e., <10–15 GWd/tHM) with Kanthal AF® cladding. The results suggest good irradiation performance for both the silicide and nitride-silicide composite pellets. Optical microscopy revealed that the pellet-cladding gap is still open, and limited axial cracking was observed only in UN-U 3 Si 5 pellets. Microcracking was isolated to the U 3 Si 5 phase in all cases and was observed in pre-irradiation and depleted pellets, indicating that it was not irradiation induced. The fission gas release was minimal for the calculated fission density achieved (2.6 – 3.15 × 10 20 fiss/cm 3 ). No fission gas bubbles were observed in the optical metallography. These results suggest acceptable swelling and fission gas behavior for both the single phase and composite compositions.

Phase equilibria of advanced technology uranium silicide-based nuclear fuel

The phases in uranium-silicide binary system were evaluated in regards to their stabilities, phase boundaries, crystal structures, and phase transitions. The results from this study were used in combination with a well assessed literature to optimize the U-Si phase diagram using the CALPHAD method. A thermodynamic database was developed, which could be used to guide nuclear fuel fabrication, could be incorporated into other nuclear fuel thermodynamic databases, or could be used to generate data required by fuel performance codes to model fuel behavior in normal or off-normal reactor operations. The U 3 Si 2 and U 3 Si 5 phases were modeled using the Compound Energy Formalism model with 3 sublattices to account for the variation in composition. The crystal structure used for the USi phase was the tetragonal with an I4/mmm space. Above 450°C, the U 3 Si 5 phase was modeled. The composition of the USi 2 phase was adjusted to USi 1.84 . The calculated invariant reactions and the enthalpy of formation for the stoichiometric phases were in agreement with experimental data.
