Large Eddy Simulation of Flow in Turbine Cascades Using LEST and UNCLE Codes

During the period December 23, 1997 and December August 31, 2004, we accomplished the development of 2 CFD codes for DNS/LES/RANS simulation of turbine cascade flows, namely LESTool and UNCLE. LESTool is a structured code making use of 5th order upwind differencing scheme and UNCLE is a second-order-accuracy unstructured code. LESTool has both Dynamic SGS and Sparlart's DES models and UNCLE makes use of URANS and DES models. The current report provides a description of methodologies used in the codes.

Unrealized Critical Lanthanide Extraction from Sea Algae Mining (UNCLE SAM): Domestic production of critical minerals from seawater

The UNCLE-SAM project, under the Biotechnologies to Ensure a Robust Supply of Critical Materials for Clean Energy program, examined the biomining applications of seaweeds for sustainable, domestic production of critical mineral feedstocks. The ocean is a vast reserve of mineralogical wealth including rare earth elements (REEs) and platinum group metal (PGMs). These elements, categorized as “critical minerals”, are used in telecommunication devices, lasers, LED lighting, turbine generators, electric car motors, jet engine alloys, and many other applications. These critical elements are increasingly vital to a thriving, efficient and sustainable society. However, only a few countries in the global market currently produce and export REEs, leading to potential geopolitical supply disruptions. Marine macroalgae, often referred to as seaweeds, bioconcentrate critical minerals from seawater, including REEs and PGMs. Marine algae cultivation can generate a significant amount of biomass with minimal freshwater, fertilizer, and land requirements. In summary, the UNCLE-SAM project successfully evaluated the technological feasibility for marine macroalgal cultivation as a feedstock for critical minerals, explored the biological capacity of different seaweeds to provide economically relevant domestic mineral production, assessed processing techniques for thermal co-conversion of seaweeds into renewable fuel and mineral feedstocks, and executed techno-economic and lifecycle assessments for identifying the most critical gaps in our current understanding to move the technology into commercially relevant deployment. Further development of this technology could transform the bioproduct and REE mining industries and catalyze the development of a more sustainable future.

Materials Data on UNCl by Materials Project

UNCl is Matlockite structured and crystallizes in the tetragonal P4/nmm space group. The structure is three-dimensional. U4+ is bonded in a 4-coordinate geometry to four equivalent N3- and five equivalent Cl1- atoms. All U–N bond lengths are 2.25 Å. There are four shorter (3.12 Å) and one longer (3.33 Å) U–Cl bond lengths. N3- is bonded to four equivalent U4+ atoms to form a mixture of edge and corner-sharing NU4 tetrahedra. Cl1- is bonded in a 5-coordinate geometry to five equivalent U4+ atoms.

Sensitivity of the active neutron coincidence collar response during simulated and experimental fresh fuel assay

Verification of the fissile (and fertile) content in fresh nuclear fuel assemblies is conducted by the IAEA to enforce the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty using the UNCL (Uranium Neutron Collar — Light Water Reactor Fuel). The UNCL uses an uncorrelated AmLi neutron source to interrogate the fuel, producing a signal of coincident fission neutrons (Doubles rate) used to assay 235 U content of the fuel. The cost of producing calibration assemblies and limited availability of diverse commercial assemblies at any one time historically restricted the ability to explore the full parameter space experimentally. Monte Carlo simulations can overcome this, but introduce additional sources of uncertainty. In this work, the sensitivity of simulations and measurements to various parameters is assessed for a reference 1616 PWR assembly of uniform 3.2% enrichment. Uncertainty contributions in this evaluation include: simulated AmLi neutron source spectrum, AmLi neutron emission rate, AmLi anisotropicity, high density polyethylene (HDPE) density, the precise position of the fuel assembly within the detector, and experimentally the statistical uncertainty. The overall total systematic uncertainty estimate for the simulation of the absolute/relative Doubles rates responses are estimated to be approximately 2.0%/1.5%, and for experimental measurements systematic uncertainty reduces to 1.1%. This analysis supports further work using the relative Doubles rates in place of measurements for updating and extending the UNCL analysis methodology as systematic uncertainty is reasonably small.

Modernizing the active neutron collar poison rod correction using simulations to enhance PWR fresh fuel verification

The declared inventory of 235 U in fresh, low enriched uranium, nuclear fuel assemblies is routinely verified by nuclear safeguards inspectorates using the UNCL (Uranium Neutron Collar – Light Water Reactor Fuel) nondestructive assay instrument. The trend in modern fuels is towards higher initial enrichment, which in turn requires a larger number of burnable poison pins with higher Gadolinia concentration to hold down the initial reactivity. UNCL assay error for modern fuel assemblies typically exceeds 10%. The traditional algorithm used to correct the response for burnable poison content needs revision to achieve accuracy comparable to the $\sigma_\text{R}$ of 4.5% expected for poison-free assemblies. Here we review the problem and use a large set of 287 Monte Carlo simulations based on an experimentally benchmarked model corresponding to the 16×16 PWR array used in Brazilian Angra type II and III fuel. Simulated relative responses are used to evaluate the functional form of the poison correction and determine parameters optimal for 16×16 PWR assemblies. This update is conducted using between 4–24 Gadolinia pins ranging 2–11 wt% Gd 2 O 3 with assemblies having mean enrichments ranging 2.5%–5%. Experimental validation of the updated coefficients using seven measurements shows bias is reduced by an order of magnitude and $\sigma_\text{R}$R reduced from 10% to less than 2%. Two updated sets of coefficients are provided, the most accurate of which is directly useable in the existing analysis code (INCC) in use by inspectorate at fuel fabrication facilities.

Strengthening Technical Safeguards of Fresh Fuel Through International Cooperation

Over time, nuclear fuel designs have shifted towards having higher initial enrichments and a greater number of burnable poison rods. This enables increased burnup for commercial reasons. These changes have made safeguards measurements of the 235 U content in modern fresh fuel more challenging. This is addressed here through a re-evaluation of the UNCL (Uranium Neutron Collar–Light Water Reactor Fuel)poison rod correction factor. Coefficients of the poison rod correction factor were updated by simulating response of AngraII PWR fuel with a wide range of both burnable poison rods and Gd 2 O 3 contentper rod. Benchmark comparisons are made to experiments performed at Resende (Brazil) and CNEN/LASAL in Brazil. By updating these coefficients, while maintaining the same mathematical form to allow INCC to be used without software modification,it was possible to reduce error in experimental 235 U linear density assay by an order of magnitude.

A Father’s Day Tribute Father-son Nobel Prize-winning physicists worked together at the Lab

Partners in physics during the World War II years, father and son Niels and Aage Bohr worked side by side on the Lab’s top-secret effort to create the first atomic bombs. Arriving in Los Alamos in late 1943, Aage was just 21 years old. He had been studying physics to follow in the footsteps of his father, who had won a Nobel Prize in 1922. Aage’s higher education, however, had been interrupted by the rapid spread of Nazism in Europe. The Bohrs, who had Jewish heritage, fled their native Denmark to escape persecution, eventually arriving in Los Alamos to aid in the creation of weapons that would help end the war. Their story is part of the collections at the National Security Research Center, which is the Lab’s classified library and also houses unclassified historic materials. While at Los Alamos, Niels and Aage were accorded VIP status because of the family’s scientific renown and given new names to protect their identities: Aage was James Baker, while his father was Nicholas Baker, but the scientific community called him Uncle Nick. Whether called Niels and Aage or Nick and Jim, father and son were inseparable.

Correct Interpretations of ENDF-102 Definitions for Resonance Effects

My Uncle Willie circa 1600 wrote “What’s in a name; a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” I fear in this case we have a somewhat similar problem in that we may be using the same word but are not using the same definition; specifically, the word Unresolved. The simplest physics definition as it applies to neutron resonances, is the energy point where we can no longer see/measure ALL – let me repeat that – ALL - of the individual resonances. That seems simple and clear, but the question is: how to represent resonances beyond this point in order to accurately reproduce the effects we have seen in measurements and expect/need to reproduce in our applications. We know there are more, unseen resonances, otherwise we wouldn’t say Unresolved. The ENDF approach is well defined in ENDF-102 and simple: for ENDF data the only way to represent Unresolved data is by using a theoretical model to define the distribution of resonances, including those that are too narrow to measure (i.e., are unresolved). It is important to note that in ENDF this is the one and only Unresolved model, e.g., there is no provision in ENDF to accurately define individually ALL resonances above the Resolved energy range – by ALL here I mean both those that we can measure and those that we cannot individually measure, but that theory and integral measurements tells us are present. An alternative approach, which would appear to be equally valid, would be to include the latest measured data as tabulated energy expendent data extending upwards in energy above the Resolved energy range. In this approach the evaluation would not include an ENDF style Unresolved energy range; it would only include a Resolved resonance region, followed by tabulated higher energy points, representing the resonances that could be measured beyond the Resolved range. But an important point to note: By listing these resonances above the resolved energy one admits that at least some resonances in this energy range are missing as Unresolved; i.e., they are too narrow or overlapping to measure. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate that the later approach, while done with good intentions, and appearing to be valid/adequate in plots, does not meet the need of our engineering applications. Why? As we will see below, of these two possible approaches, only the ENDF use of a model to statistically include the missing, i.e., unresolved, resonances, can meet our engineering needs to reproduce the integral effects we have measured and understand. Only with this statistical model can we predict and include in our calculated results the important effects of temperature (Doppler broadening), and energy integrals (self-shielding). Below I will first present results using two ENDF/B-VIII.1 evaluations, U235 and U238, that use the correct ENDF-102 definition of an Unresolved resonance region, using a statistical model to include the effects of resonances that theory predicts are present, but are too narrow to measure. These two evaluations reproduce the expected temperature (Doppler) and energy integral (self-shielding) effects that we expect. Next I will present results using one ENDF/B-VIII.1 evaluation, 26-Fe-56, that does not use an ENDF-102 Unresolved resonance region; instead above its Resolved energy range it lists many tabulated energy points, that look like measured data, but by definition, since they are included above the ENDF Resolved energy range there are missing Unresolved resonances, i.e., there are missing the resonances that are too narrow to resolve, i.e., are unresolved. My conclusion, and I hope yours, is that the below figures illustrate that this approach does not reproduce the temperature and energy integrals that we expect and need to accurately calculate results for our fission reactor calculations. As such this approach should not be used in ENDF formatted evaluations.

Computation of rotor-stator interaction using the Navier-Stokes equations

The numerical scheme presented belongs to a family of codes known as UNCLE (UNsteady Computation of fieLd Equations) as reported by Whitfield (1995), that is being used to solve problems in a variety of areas including compressible and incompressible flows. This derivation is specifically developed for general unsteady multi-blade-row turbomachinery problems. The scheme solves the Reynolds-averaged N-S equations with the Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model.

Developing A Web-based User Interface for Semantic Information Retrieval

While there are now a number of languages and frameworks that enable computer-based systems to search stored data semantically, the optimal design for effective user interfaces for such systems is still uncle ar. Such interfaces should mask unnecessary query detail from users, yet still allow them to build queries of arbitrary complexity without significant restrictions. We developed a user interface supporting s emantic query generation for Semanticorganizer, a tool used by scient ists and engineers at NASA to construct networks of knowledge and dat a. Through this interface users can select node types, node attribute s and node links to build ad-hoc semantic queries for searching the S emanticOrganizer network.

A recent spin-off from flight deck adaptive automation research at NASA Langley Research Center is a biocybernetic invention referred to informally as MindShift. When using the MindShift technology, a person is able to play off-the-shelf Nintendo Wii games enhanced with biofeedback, which is used to improve self-regulation of physiological functioning. Therefore, the user experiences the challenge of regulating their physiological responses during gameplay in addition to the intended challenges presented in the video game. The research projects being conducted under the supervision of Dr. Alan Pope and Chad Stephens at NASA Langley Research Center examine the effects of interacting with the MindShift invention technology on subjects' self-regulation of heart rate and brainwave activity, performance in the games, performance on cognitive tasks, and subjective experience of effort (i.e., workload). The MindShift invention's effects are being compared to the effects of interacting with the games without the MindShift technology and to the effects of interacting with commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) brain-computer interface (BCI) technology, specifically the Mattel Mind Flex and the Uncle Milton Star Wars Force Trainer. A 32-channel electroencephalograph system is used to record subjects' brainwave and electrocardiographic activity. The potential for biofeedback game system applications is wide-ranging - from a more engaging form of clinical biofeedback training to a new challenge for avid gamers. Consequently, research needs to be conducted to fully understand the effects that these new games have on a person's physiological and psychological functioning. Biocybernetic technology like MindShift developed from the idea that operators of critical systems such as aerospace systems could hone their stress management and attention skills in biofeedback-augmented leisure activities while off-the-job in order to positively affect their on-the-job performance. This human performance enhancement technology is applicable to skill training on manually controlled critical tasks, such as unmanned aerial vehicle teleoperation, thus enabling the training of cognitive skills to be concurrent with manual skills. Furthermore, this type of technology can apply to medical and clinical uses of biofeedback by serving as an additional form of clinical biofeedback training that may be particularly useful for those with ADHD.
