Normal Component of Induced Velocity for Entire Field of a Uniformly Loaded Lifting Rotor with Highly Swept Wake as Determined by Electromagnetic Analog

Values of the normal component of induced velocity throughout the entire field of a uniformly loaded r(rotor at high high speed are presented in the form of charts and tables. Many points were found by an electromagnetic analog, details of which are given. Comparisons of computed and analog values for the induced velocity indicate that the latter are sufficiently accurate for engineering purposes.

Low-speed static longitudinal and lateral stability characteristics of two low-aspect-ratio wings cambered and twisted to provide a uniform load at a supersonic flight condition

A delta wing and a tapered sweptback wing of aspect ratios 1.56 and 2.00, respectively, both of which were cambered and twisted so as to provide a uniform load distribution for a supersonic flight condition, were tested in combination with a fuselage at Reynolds numbers between 384,000 and 1,550,000 in order to determine the low-speed lift-drag and static stability characteristics of such wings.

Tensile testing grips ensure uniform loading of bimetal tubing specimens

Tensile testing grip uniformly distributes stresses to the internal and external tube of bimetal tubing specimens. The grip is comprised of a slotted external tube grip, a slotted internal tube grip, a machine bolt and nut, an internal grip expansion cone, and an external grip compression nut.

Design curves for non-linear analysis of simply-supported, uniformly-loaded rectangular plates

Design curves for the non-linear analysis of simply-supported rectangular plates subjected to uniform normal pressure loads have been developed. These curves yield the center deflection, center stress and corner stress in non-dimensionalized form plotted against a dimensionless parameter describing the load intensity. The results presented are based on extensive non-linear finite element analysis employing the ARGUS structural analysis program. Plates with length to width ratios of 1, 1.5, 2, 3 and 4 are included. The load range considered extends to 1000 times the load at which the behavior of the plate becomes significantly non-linear. Over the load range considered, the analysis shows that the ratio of center deflection to plate thickness for a square plate is less than 16 to 1, whereas linear theory would predict a center deflection 400 times the plate thickness. Likewise, the stress is markedly lower than would be predicted by linear theory. The present results are shown to be in excellent agreement with the classical linear theory up to a central deflection to plate thickness ratio of about one-half. In the non-linear regime the present results for deflection and stress are in very good agreement with the analytical and experimental work of other investigators.

Determination of mean camber surfaces for wings having uniform chordwise loading and arbitrary spanwise loading in subsonic flow

The field of a uniformly loaded wing in subsonic flow is discussed in terms of the acceleration potential. It is shown that, for the design of such wings, the slope of the mean camber surface at any point can be determined by a line integration around the wing boundary. By an additional line integration around the wing boundary, this method is extended to include the case where the local section lift coefficient varies with spanwise location (the chordwise loading at every section still remaining uniform). For the uniformly loaded wing of polygonal plan form, the integrations necessary to determine the local slope of the surface and the further integration of the slopes to determine the ordinate can be done analytically. An outline of these integrations and the resulting formulas are included. Calculated results are given for a sweptback wing with uniform chordwise loading and a highly tapered spanwise loading, a uniformly loaded delta wing, a uniformly loaded sweptback wing, and the same sweptback wing with uniform chordwise loading but elliptical span load distribution.

Large deflections of circular isotropic membranes subjected to arbitrary axisymmetric loading

Circular membranes with fixed peripheral edges, subjected to arbitrary axisymmetric loading are analyzed. A single governing differential equation in terms of radial stress is used. This nonlinear governing equation is solved using the finite difference method in conjunction with Newton-Raphson method. Three loading cases, namely (1) uniformly loaded membrane, (2) a membrane with uniform load over an inner portion, and (3) a membrane with ring load, are analyzed. Calculated central displacement and the central and edge radial stresses for uniformly loaded membrane, agree extremely well with the classical solution.
