Investigation of the approach used in the unresolved resonance region

The typical practice used in Monte Carlo neutron transport codes in the unresolved resonance region (URR) is to take advantage of the probability table (PT) approach. Cross sections are sampled from PTs and used as needed, along with generated average cross sections. The PTs are generated based on cross-section calculations performed using the single-level Breit–Wigner approximation. Although the approach used in the URR seems plausible, a detailed examination was needed to understand the benchmark results obtained using specific tests.

Rossi-alpha Analysis of CURIE Experiment

Critical assembly measurement and operations are crucial to the development of benchmark data to support research into criticality safety, radiation-detection development, and the overall application of nuclear technologies. Accurate nuclear data are needed for accurate predictive simulations, and validation using critical experiments is an important part of the nuclear data pipeline. The accuracy of nuclear data are improved using more robust and targeted measurements. In particular, the intermediate energy range of uranium is of great interest. LANL has successfully performed the Zeus series of experiments on the Comet assembly to investigate the intermediate energy range for HEU with various moderators. A successor to these experiments is the benchmark for the Critical Unresolved Region Integral Experiment (CURIE), designed to be sensitive to the unresolved resonance region (URR). This experiment is designed using polytetrafluoroethylene, more commonly known as Teflon, moderators. The CURIE experiment was successfully conducted at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC). The Rossi-alpha method was used to evaluate the propensity of the CURIE configurations to sustain fission chains by estimating the prompt neutron decay constant α. This work evaluates the α at delayed critical using Rossi-alpha for different Teflon moderator thicknesses in the CURIE experiment. These results will help improve understanding of the CURIE benchmark experiments.

A consistent, Bayesian, approach to the cross section probability distribution in the unresolved resonance region

The cross sections of neutron-induced reactions can be divided into three energy ranges: the resolved resonance region (RRR), the unresolved resonance region (URR), and the fast region. In general, the cross sections in the URR show significant fluctuations that cannot be predicted and cannot be experimentally resolved, thus, it is commonly assumed that the cross section at a specific energy is given by a probability distribution function (PDF) over a range of values that can span several orders of magnitude. The current methodology used to describe such behavior is to construct the PDF by stochastically generating resonance ladders and numerically measuring the PDF. The resonance ladders are sampled using known resonance statistical properties and average resonance widths and spacings extrapolated from the RRR. Although this is a standard and widely used technique, it is computationally very expensive, therefore, an alternative, analytical, approach would be preferable due to the considerable speed up of the computational time in real life applications. Moreover, the current methodology does not take into account existing experimental data, such for total and capture cross sections, that are available for many nuclei. Finally, this approach was developed to be used in reactor-scale applications and it is not suited for use in single-event applications. In this work we will rethink the entire approach to the PDF construction using a Bayesian mindset. This will allow us to provide a different definition of the PDF that allows a much faster calculation of the higher-temperature PDFs and a proper combination of theoretical and experimental PDFs following the probability theory. We will also show that our definition is well suited for single-event applications and we will make an explicit connection between our method and the standard approach. We do this by showing that the central limit theorem applies and our method leads to the same PDF obtained with the standard methodology, for a large number of events per history.

Multiple Critical Unresolved Region Integral Experiment (MCURIE): A Proposed Integral Critical Experimental Framework for Unresolved Region and Intermediate Energies

The Critical Unresolved Region Integral Experiment (CURIE) critical experiment was performed at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) at the Device Assembly Facility (DAF) at the Nevada Nuclear Security Sites (NNSS) in 2020. The objective of CURIE was to improve the quality of integral nuclear data in the uranium-235 ( 235 U) unresolved resonance region (URR) by performing benchmark integral experiments that were sensitive to the URR energy ranges. The CURIE experiment was evaluated for the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) handbook and the benchmark evaluation was accepted in 2022. The URR is a region within the intermediate neutron energy range (the intermediate energy ranges from 0.7 eV to 100 keV). The observed resonance structure in neutron cross sections is due to discrete energy levels in the nucleus and are characterized by resonance parameters. In the URR region, the resonance parameters are only partially resolved as the resolution of the experiment techniques becomes comparable to the average width of the resonances themselves, and the resonances are so close to one another that the structure cannot be determined empirically. The ENDF/B-VIII.0 and JEFF-3.3 nuclear data libraries define the URR as beginning at 2.25 keV and continuing until 25 keV. There are minimal intermediate neutron energy benchmarks available in the ICSBEP benchmark handbook, and aside from CURIE there are none that are highly sensitive in the URR energy region. There is a current need for additional experiments sensitive to the URR energy region. There is a new proposed subgroup for the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development and Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD NEA) Working Party on International Nuclear Data Evaluation Cooperation (WPEC), so any new models or information will need experimental validation and testing. The NEA Working Party on Nuclear Criticality Safety (WPNCS) recent experimental needs and priority list includes intermediate energy 235 U and 238 U experiments, as does the recent Integral Experiments to Address Nuclear Criticality Safety Needs Meeting (May 2023). A variant on the original CURIE experiment called the Multiple Critical Unresolved Region Integral Experiment (MCURIE) is proposed to provide further investigation of the intermediate and URR energy region for uranium. MCURIE will utilize existing fuels at NCERC but use alternative moderators and reflectors to modify the neutron absorption, scattering, and fission spectra of the experiments, allowing for precise targeting of nuclear data sensitivities. The overall goal of MCURIE is to develop a framework for designing and performing integral benchmark experiments with high sensitivities in the intermediate and URR energy regions for nuclear data validation.

DANCE and NEUANCE measurements of 233 U(n, γ) (Q4 Report to NCSP on FY2022)

Uranium-233 plays an important role in the Th-U fuel cycle, which has been proposed as an alternative to the U-Pu fuel cycle due to its reduced amount of transuranium elements. The available experimental 233 U(n,γ) cross section data in the literature are scarce [1, 2, 3], from which the capture to fission ratio is shown in figure 1. In 2008, the 233 U(n,γ) cross section was investigated at LANL using the DANCE detector combined with a PPAC, however the statistics in the keV regime were inadequate for a reliable extraction of the cross section at 100 keV. Large discrepancies are found between the evaluations, especially in the Unresolved Resonance Region (URR), see figure 1. An accurate measurement of the 233 U(n,γ) cross section is required by the NCSP to complete the neutron-induced cross section data; a new evaluation reported the need of 233 U capture data.

Sensitivity-based Experiment Design Optimization for a Molybdenum Critical Experiment

A lack of intermediate molybdenum benchmarks in the ICSBEP has been identified by LANL, Y-12, and IRSN. This lacking adversely effects criticality safety operations and leaves new differential molybdenum data unvalidated. NCERC is proposing a series of intermediate integral experiments to better the understanding of molybdenum systems. Using MCNP6.2 with the ENDF/B-VIII.0 nuclear data library a single unmoderated and four moderated system designs were identified using a sensitivity optimization method. Each proposed system was found to be at least twice as sensitive to the 95 Mo capture cross section in the URR as the sole existing intermediate molybdenum benchmark in the ISCBEP handbook. The addition of a new molybdenum sensitive intermediate system would improve future nuclear data evaluations.

Rossi-alpha Analysis of CURIE Experiment [Slides]

Critical assembly measurement and operations are crucial to the development of benchmark data. Knowledge of the prompt neutron lifetime informs on the state of the system’s neutron spectrum. Rossi-alpha analysis can give us time-dependent information on the system. Teflon was selected, via genetic algorithm, as a moderator to target the URR in uranium for CURIE. Rossi-alpha measurements of the assembly's approach to critical using He-3 detectors estimated the prompt neutron decay constant (α) at delayed critical. α values of several subcritical measurements were then used to predict the α value at delayed critical.

Advancements in nuclear data evaluations in the unresolved resonance region [Slides]

Minimal updates to current capabilities (SAMMY/AMPX) and to the ENDF format are proposed to include threshold reaction for outgoing charged-particle channels in the URR formalism. If average resonance parameters are reported, probability tables for newly defined reactions channels may be needed, implemented, and tested. Nuclear data evaluation of n+ 35 Cl reactions can be considered the best case to apply the proposed updates.
