User interactive electric propulsion software design

As electric propulsion technology matures from laboratory development to flight application, mission planners and spacecraft designers are increasingly required to determine the benefits and integration issues of using this propulsion capability. A computer software tool for supporting these analyses is presented. This tool combines detailed analytical models describing electric propulsion engine performance and subsystem design, and a software structure that is highly user interactive and adaptable. The software design methodology used to develop this software tool is presented in this paper.

Multi-user, interactive, annotated flow-chart applet

This paper describes a web-based documentation tool that has been developed for use by a team of collaborators who are developing interacting components within a system. It consists of a Java applet in the form of a flow chart with additional test that can be viewed by clicking on the desired component. The text, positions, and linkages of the components may be edited by the user and saved to the server. The concept could easily be applied to other collaborative work. Using the techniques and code segments described here, a programmer should be able to customize a similar applet for his own use in a few days time.

Spacelab user interaction

The results of the third and final phase of a study undertaken to define means of optimizing the Spacelab experiment data system by interactively manipulating the flow of data were presented. A number of payload applicable interactive techniques and an integrated interaction system for each of two possible payloads are described. These interaction systems have been functionally defined and are accompanied with block diagrams, hardware specifications, software sizing and speed requirements, operational procedures and cost/benefits analysis data for both onboard and ground based system elements. It is shown that accrued benefits are attributable to a reduction in data processing costs obtained by, generally, a considerable reduction in the quantity of data that might otherwise be generated without interaction. One other additional anticipated benefit includes the increased scientific value obtained by the quicker return of all useful data.

A computer program for processing impedance cardiographic data: Improving accuracy through user-interactive software

This report contains the source code and documentation for a computer program used to process impedance cardiography data. The cardiodynamic measures derived from impedance cardiography are ventricular stroke column, cardiac output, cardiac index and Heather index. The program digitizes data collected from the Minnesota Impedance Cardiograph, Electrocardiography (ECG), and respiratory cycles and then stores these data on hard disk. It computes the cardiodynamic functions using interactive graphics and stores the means and standard deviations of each 15-sec data epoch on floppy disk. This software was designed on a Digital PRO380 microcomputer and used version 2.0 of P/OS, with (minimally) a 4-channel 16-bit analog/digital (A/D) converter. Applications software is written in FORTRAN 77, and uses Digital's Pro-Tool Kit Real Time Interface Library, CORE Graphic Library, and laboratory routines. Source code can be readily modified to accommodate alternative detection, A/D conversion and interactive graphics. The object code utilizing overlays and multitasking has a maximum of 50 Kbytes.

ROCOPT: A user friendly interactive code to optimize rocket structural components

ROCOPT is a user-friendly, graphically-interfaced, microcomputer-based computer program (IBM compatible) that optimizes rocket components by minimizing the structural weight. The rocket components considered are ring stiffened truncated cones and cylinders. The applied loading is static, and can consist of any combination of internal or external pressure, axial force, bending moment, and torque. Stress margins are calculated by means of simple closed form strength of material type equations. Stability margins are determined by approximate, orthotropic-shell, closed-form equations. A modified form of Powell's method, in conjunction with a modified form of the external penalty method, is used to determine the minimum weight of the structure subject to stress and stability margin constraints, as well as user input constraints on the structural dimensions. The graphical interface guides the user through the required data prompts, explains program options and graphically displays results for easy interpretation.

TIGER: A user-friendly interactive grid generation system for complicated turbomachinery and axis-symmetric configurations

The issue of time efficiency in grid generation is addressed by developing a user friendly graphical interface for interactive/automatic construction of structured grids around complex turbomachinery/axis-symmetric configurations. The accuracy of geometry modeling and its fidelity is accomplished by adapting the nonuniform rational b-spline (NURBS) representation. A customized interactive grid generation code, TIGER, has been developed to facilitate the grid generation process for complicated internal, external, and internal-external turbomachinery fields simulations. The FORMS Library is utilized to build user-friendly graphical interface. The algorithm allows a user to redistribute grid points interactively on curves/surfaces using NURBS formulation with accurate geometric definition. TIGER's features include multiblock, multiduct/shroud, multiblade row, uneven blade count, and patched/overlapping block interfaces. It has been applied to generate grids for various complicated turbomachinery geometries, as well as rocket and missile configurations.

A hybrid symbolic/finite-element algorithm for solving nonlinear optimal control problems

The general code described is capable of solving difficult nonlinear optimal control problems by using finite elements and a symbolic manipulator. Quick and accurate solutions are obtained with a minimum for user interaction. Since no user programming is required for most problems, there are tremendous savings to be gained in terms of time and money.

Use of symbolic computation in robotics education

An application of symbolic computation in robotics education is described. A software package is presented which combines generality, user interaction, and user-friendliness with the systematic usage of symbolic computation and artificial intelligence techniques. The software utilizes MACSYMA, a LISP-based symbolic algebra language, to automatically generate closed-form expressions representing forward and inverse kinematics solutions, the Jacobian transformation matrices, robot pose error-compensation models equations, and Lagrange dynamics formulation for N degree-of-freedom, open chain robotic manipulators. The goal of such a package is to aid faculty and students in the robotics course by removing burdensome tasks of mathematical manipulations. The software package has been successfully tested for its accuracy using commercially available robots.

SSME LOX post flow analysis/fluid structure interaction. Volume 2: Fluid structure interaction

The progress made in resolving the computational issues associated with modeling high temperature and pressure viscous flows in advanced propulsion systems is documented. An overview of adaptive computational methods for various classes of fluid-structure interaction problems is presented. The key features associated with several approaches are outlined and the advantages/disadvantages of each are summarized. A mathematical formulation is presented for general fluid-structure interaction problems with a moving domain. The two adaptive approaches are discussed used in solving the benchmark problems. The first scheme is a user interactive scheme which is quite versatile and easy to implement but requires an excessive amount of monitoring by the operator and is computationally inefficient. The second method is a new, local remeshing method for handling a general class of fluid-structure interaction problems. This method couples many of the attractive features of other approaches into a computationally efficient and versatile method. The results obtained for two test cases are presented. Results from both the user interactive and local remeshing procedure are described. The current status of the project and future goals to be completed are summarized.

Knowledge based automated scheduling and planning tools for IUE

The International Ultraviolet Explorer has been successfully operated as a real time user-interactive space observatory for twelve years. It is expected to continue operation for up to five additional years, but under increasing constraints. The option to operate IUE in a more automated, non user-interactive mode is under consideration. A sophisticated software system to support such an operation is a clear requirement. The conceptual framework of such a system is described. Results of a preliminary tests are presented for which a hypothetical four day schedule of space-craft activities at a time resolutions as low as ten minutes was generated.

SEAPAK user's guide, version 2.0. Volume 2: Descriptions of programs

The SEAPAK is a user-interactive satellite data analysis package that was developed for the processing and interpretation of Nimbus-7/Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) and the NOAA Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data. Significant revisions were made since version 1.0, and the ancillary environmental data analysis module was greatly expanded. The package continues to be user friendly and user interactive. Also, because the scientific goals of the ocean color research being conducted have shifted to large space and time scales, batch processing capabilities for both satellite and ancillary environmental data analyses were enhanced, thus allowing for large quantities of data to be ingested and analyzed.

Vortex information display system program description manual

A vortex information display system is described which provides flexible control through system-user interaction for collecting wing-tip-trailing vortex data, processing this data in real time, displaying the processed data, storing raw data on magnetic tape, and post processing raw data. The data is received from two asynchronous laser Doppler velocimeters (LDV's) and includes position, velocity, and intensity information. The raw data is written onto magnetic tape for permanent storage and is also processed in real time to locate vortices and plot their positions as a function of time. The interactive capability enables the user to make real time adjustments in processing data and provides a better definition of vortex behavior. Displaying the vortex information in real time produces a feedback capability to the LDV system operator allowing adjustments to be made in the collection of raw data. Both raw data and processing can be continually upgraded during flyby testing to improve vortex behavior studies. The post-analysis capability permits the analyst to perform in-depth studies of test data and to modify vortex behavior models to improve transport predictions.
