Variable Frequency Drive (VFD): Emphasizing Energy Savings and Efficiency in Industrial Applications

This project explores the energy saving potential of using a VDA in an industrial pumping application. A 24-horsepower pump, 3-phase centrifugal pump powered by 480V AC supply analyzed under variable frequency control using an ABB ACS880-31-052A-5 VFD. by modulating the motor speed between 30Hz and 60Hz, the VFD enables precise control of power consumption based on system set speed. The article is intended for public cause of the poster session and presentation session. INL/Exp-25-86570

HDF5 in the exascale era: Delivering efficient and scalable parallel I/O for exascale applications

Accurately modeling real-world systems requires scientific applications at exascale to generate massive amounts of data and manage data storage efficiently. However, parallel input and output (I/O) faces challenges due to new application workflows and the state-of-the-art memory, interconnect, and storage architectures considered in exascale designs. The storage hierarchy has expanded with node-local persistent memory, solid-state storage, and traditional disk and tape-based storage, thus requiring efficiency at each layer and much more efficient data movement among these layers. This paper discusses how the ExaHDF5 project improved the I/O performance and data management for exascale architectures by enhancing HDF5, a widely used parallel I/O library. The team developed an Asynchronous I/O Virtual Object Layer (VOL) connector that allowed overlapping I/O with computation. They also created a Cache VOL to complement asynchronous I/O by incorporating fast storage layers, such as burst buffer and node-local storage, into the parallel I/O workflow through caching and staging data. Additionally, the team enabled data aggregation and I/O at the node level by using a Subfiling Virtual File Driver (VFD). To demonstrate superior I/O performance with HDF5 at exascale, the ExaHDF5 team collaborated with several exascale applications. In this paper, we show I/O performance improvements for three applications: Cabana (a particle-based simulation library), EQSIM (a regional earthquake simulation software), and E3SM (a climate system modeling library).

ELM 1016706669-AA B581 GDE01 Generator Summary pg 4-5 only

The table below shows the general load breakdown for 581GDE01. Although the total connected load exceeds the generator’s 150kW nameplate capacity, the normal configured load during standby power mode is less, which was measured at 81kW, or 54%, during preventive maintenance activities on 12/12/24. The generator’s available spare capacity must account for dynamically changing loads that can increase the total power demand at any time. If the two online VFD’s are operated at full speed the actual standby mode load is estimated to increase by 38kW, which would bring the total configured load during standby power mode to 119kW, or 79%, still within 581GDE01’s acceptable capacity. Per the LLNL Site 200 Generator Consolidation Final Study 2022, “Standby Emergency Generator nameplate ratings are based upon operation with varying load averaging 70% of the nameplate for 200 hours per year. Continuous loading between 70% and 100% will reduce a generator’s expected lifetime before a major overhaul. This is never a problem with Laboratory machines because of conservative application of generators and the reliability of the normal power system combines to keeps the load and hours down”. To achieve optimal performance and prolong generator life, the recommended generator loading is between 40% and 70%, optimally at 70%, which 581GDE01 appropriately falls within.

Electrical Validation Testing for ORPC MHK Generator, Modification 6: ORPC SBV for MHK Generator System (CRADA Final Report)

For the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) 2016 Small Business Voucher for Marine and Hydrokinetic (MHK) System, Second Round 2016, ORPC intends to work with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to perform dynamometer testing of the MHK generator systems and its associated controls and inverters. ORPC will provide the generator, variable frequency drives (VFD), controls, and inverter for this testing. NREL will utilize the NREL Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF) and dynamometer facilities at the National Wind Technology Center (NWTC) for this work. Modification 6: Additionally, NREL will conduct a feasibility study for implementing passive DC rectification at the turbine.

The Ozone Monitoring Instrument: Overview of 14 Years in Space

This overview paper highlights the successes of the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) on board the Aura satellite spanning a period of nearly 14 years. Data from OMI has been used in a wide range of applications and research resulting in many new findings. Due to its unprecedented spatial resolution, in combination with daily global coverage, OMI plays a unique role in measuring trace gases important for the ozone layer, air quality, and climate change. With the operational very fast delivery (VFD; direct readout) and near real-time (NRT) availability of the data, OMI also plays an important role in the development of operational services in the atmospheric chemistry domain.
