Measurement of the VH,H → ττ process with the ATLAS detector at 13 TeV

A measurement of the Standard Model Higgs boson produced in association with a W or Z boson and decaying into a pair of τ-leptons is presented. This search is based on proton-proton collision data collected at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb -1 . For the Higgs boson candidate, only final states with at least one τ-lepton decaying hadronically (τ→hadrons+ν τ ) are considered. For the vector bosons, only leptonic decay channels are considered: Z→ℓℓ and W→ℓν ℓ , with ℓ=e,μ. An excess of events over the expected background is found with an observed (expected) significance of 4.2 (3.6) standard deviations, providing evidence of the Higgs boson produced in association with a vector boson and decaying into a pair of τ-leptons. The ratio of the measured cross-section to the Standard Model prediction is μ$_{VH}^{ττ}$=1.28$_{-0.29}^{+0.30}$(stat.)$_{-0.21}^{+0.25}$(syst.). This result represents the most accurate measurement of the VH(ττ) process achieved to date.

Neuroanatomical and cognitive correlates of visual hallucinations in Parkinson’s disease and dementia with Lewy bodies: Voxel-based morphometry and neuropsychological meta-analysis

Visual hallucinations (VH) are common in Parkinson's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies, two forms of Lewy body disease (LBD), but the neural substrates and mechanisms involved are still unclear. We conducted meta-analyses of voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and neuropsychological studies investigating the neuroanatomical and cognitive correlates of VH in LBD. For VBM (12 studies), we used Seed-based d Mapping with Permutation of Subject Images (SDM-PSI), including statistical parametric maps for 50% of the studies. For neuropsychology (35 studies), we used MetaNSUE to consider non-statistically significant unreported effects. VH were associated with smaller grey matter volume in occipital, frontal, occipitotemporal, and parietal areas (peak Hedges' g -0.34 to -0.49). In patients with Parkinson's disease without dementia, VH were associated with lower verbal immediate memory performance (Hedges' g -0.52). Both results survived correction for multiple comparisons. Here, abnormalities in these brain regions might reflect dysfunctions in brain networks sustaining visuoperceptive, attention, and executive abilities, with the latter also being at the basis of poor immediate memory performance.

The molecular basis of the neutralization breadth of the RBD-specific antibody CoV11

SARS-CoV-2, the virus behind the COVID-19 pandemic, has changed over time to the extent that the current virus is substantially different from what originally led to the pandemic in 2019–2020. Viral variants have modified the severity and transmissibility of the disease and continue do so. How much of this change is due to viral fitness versus a response to immune pressure is hard to define. One class of antibodies that continues to afford some level of protection from emerging variants are those that closely overlap the binding site for angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) on the receptor binding domain (RBD). Some members of this class that were identified early in the course of the pandemic arose from the VH 3-53 germline gene (IGHV3-53*01) and had short heavy chain complementarity-determining region 3s (CDR H3s). Here, we describe the molecular basis of the SARS-CoV-2 RBD recognition by the anti-RBD monoclonal antibody CoV11 isolated early in the COVID-19 pandemic and show how its unique mode of binding the RBD determines its neutralization breadth. CoV11 utilizes a heavy chain VH 3-53 and a light chain VK 3-20 germline sequence to bind to the RBD. Two of CoV11’s four heavy chain changes from the VH 3-53 germline sequence, $Thr^{28}_{FWRH1}$ to Ile and $Ser^{31}_{CDRH1}$ to Arg, and some unique features in its CDR H3 increase its affinity to the RBD, while the four light chain changes from the VK 3-20 germline sequence sit outside of the RBD binding site. Antibodies of this type can retain significant affinity and neutralization potency against variants of concern (VOCs) that have diverged significantly from original virus lineage such as the prevalent omicron variant. We also discuss the mechanism by which VH 3-53 encoded antibodies recognize spike antigen and show how minimal changes to their sequence, their choice of light chain, and their mode of binding influence their affinity and impact their neutralization breadth.

Molecular recognition requires dimerization of a VHH antibody

Camelid heavy-chain-only antibodies are a unique class of antibody that possesses only a single variable domain (termed VHH) for antigen recognition. Despite their apparent canonical mechanism of target recognition, where a single VHH domain binds a single target, an anti-caffeine VHH has been observed to possess 2:1 stoichiometry. Here, the structure of the anti-caffeine VHH/caffeine complex enabled the generation and biophysical analysis of variants that were used to better understand the role of VHH homodimerization in caffeine recognition. VHH interface mutants and caffeine analogs, which were examined to probe the mechanism of caffeine binding, suggested caffeine recognition is only possible with the VHH dimer species. Correspondingly, in the absence of caffeine, the anti-caffeine VHH was found to form a dimer with a dimerization constant comparable to that observed with VH:VL domains in conventional antibody systems, which was most stable near physiological temperature. While the VHH:VHH dimer structure (at 1.13 Å resolution) is reminiscent of conventional VH:VL heterodimers, the homodimeric VHH possesses a smaller angle of domain interaction, as well as a larger amount of apolar surface area burial. To test the general hypothesis that the short complementarity-determining region-3 (CDR3) may help drive VHH:VHH homodimerization, an anti-picloram VHH domain containing a short CDR3 was generated and characterized, which revealed it also existed as dimer species in solution. These results suggest homodimer-driven recognition may represent a more common method of VHH ligand recognition, opening opportunities for novel VHH homodimer affinity reagents and helping to guide their use in chemically induced dimerization applications.

Parameter dependencies of the separatrix density in low triangularity L-mode and H-mode JET-ILW plasmas

Abstract The midplane electron separatrix density, n e,sep , in JET-ILW L-mode and H-mode low triangularity deuterium fuelled plasmas exhibits a strong explicit dependence on the averaged outer divertor target electron temperature, n e,sep ∼ T e,ot −1/2 . This dependence is reproduced by analytic reversed two point model (rev-2PM), and arises from parallel pressure balance, as well as the ratio of the power and momentum volumetric loss factors, (1 − f cooling )/(1 − f mom-loss ). Quantifying the influence of the (1 − f cooling ) and (1 − f mom-loss ) loss factors on n e,sep has been enabled by measurement estimates of these quantities from L-mode density (fueling) ramps in the outer horizontal, VH(C), and vertical target, VV, divertor configurations. Rev-2PM n e,sep estimates from the extended H-mode and more limited L-mode datasets are recovered to within ±25% of the measurements, with a scaling factor applied to account for use of T e,ot , an averaged quantity, rather than flux tube resolved target values. Both the (1 − f cooling ) and (1 − f mom-loss ) trends and recovery of n e,sep using the rev-2PM formatting are reproduced in EDGE2D-EIRENE L-mode-like and H-mode-like density scan simulations. The general lack of a divertor configuration effect in the JET-ILW n e,sep trends can be attributed to a significant influence of main chamber recycling, which has been shown in the EDGE2D-EIRENE results to moderate n e,sep with respect to changes in divertor neutral leakage imposed by changes in the divertor configuration. The unified n e,sep vs T e,ot trends can, however, be broken if large modifications to the divertor geometry (e.g. complete removal of the outer divertor baffle structure) are introduced in the model. The more pronounced high-field side high density region formation in the VH(C) configuration with reduced clearance to the separatrix does not appear to have a significant influence on the outer midplane separatrix and pedestal parameters when mapped to T e,ot , although conditions at the inner midplane could not be assessed.

Differential cross-section measurements of Higgs boson production in the H → τ + τ - decay channel in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Differential measurements of Higgs boson production in the τ-lepton-pair decay channel are presented in the gluon fusion, vector-boson fusion (VBF), VH and $t\overline{t}H$ associated production modes, with particular focus on the VBF production mode. The data used to perform the measurements correspond to 140 fb -1 of proton-proton collisions collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Two methods are used to perform the measurements: the Simplified Template Cross-Section (STXS) approach and an Unfolded Fiducial Differential measurement considering only the VBF phase space. For the STXS measurement, events are categorized by their production mode and kinematic properties such as the Higgs boson’s transverse momentum (${p}_{\textrm{T}}^{\textrm{H}}$ ), the number of jets produced in association with the Higgs boson, or the invariant mass of the two leading jets (mjj). For the VBF production mode, the ratio of the measured cross-section to the Standard Model prediction for m jj > 1.5 TeV and ${p}_{\textrm{T}}^{\textrm{H}}$ > 200 GeV (${p}_{\textrm{T}}^{\textrm{H}}$ < 200 GeV) is ${1.29}_{-0.34}^{+0.39}$ (${0.12}_{-0.33}^{+0.34}$ ). This is the first VBF measurement for the higher-${p}_{\textrm{T}}^{\textrm{H}}$ criteria, and the most precise for the lower-${p}_{\textrm{T}}^{\textrm{H}}$ criteria. The fiducial cross-section measurements, which only consider the kinematic properties of the event, are performed as functions of variables characterizing the VBF topology, such as the signed ΔΦ jj between the two leading jets. The measurements have a precision of 30%–50% and agree well with the Standard Model predictions. These results are interpreted in the SMEFT framework, and place the strongest constraints to date on the CP-odd Wilson coefficient ${c}_{H\overset{\sim }{W}}$ .

2HDM neutral scalars under the LHC

Two Higgs Doublet Models (2HDM) provide a simple framework for new physics models with an extended Higgs sector. The current LHC results, including both direct searches for additional non-Standard Model (SM) Higgs bosons, as well as precision measurements of the SM-like Higgs couplings, already provide strong constraints on the 2HDM parameter spaces. In this paper, we examine those constraints for the neutral scalars in the Type-I and Type-II 2HDM. In addition to the direct search channels with SM final states: H/A → ff¯¯¯, VV, Vh, hh, we study in particular the exotic decay channels of H/A → AZ/HZ once there is a mass hierarchy between the non-SM Higgses. We found that H/A → AZ/H Z channel has unique sensitivity to the alignment limit region which remains unconstrained by conventional searches and Higgs precision measurements. This mode also extends the reach at intermediate tβ for heavy mA that are not covered by the other direct searches.

Multi-objective surrogate-assisted calibration of CPFEM models using macroscopic response and in situ EBSD measurements of grain reorientation trajectories

Crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM) models are widely used to simulate the deformation behaviour of polycrystalline materials, but their calibration is often limited by their high computational cost and the non-convexity of the optimisation landscape. Here, this study develops a multi-objective surrogate-assisted calibration workflow that couples a multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) with an adaptively trained deep neural network (DNN) surrogate model to efficiently identify CPFEM parameters from experimental data. The workflow is demonstrated on three crystal plasticity (CP) formulations of increasing complexity — Voce hardening (VH), two-coefficient latent hardening (LH2), and six-coefficient latent hardening (LH6) — using in situ electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) measurements of Alloy 617 under uniaxial tensile loading. The CPFEM models are calibrated against the experimentally observed stress–strain response and reorientation trajectories of eight grains, then validated against eight additional trajectories and overall texture evolution. Across the CP formulations, the macroscopic response was reproduced reliably, while differences emerged in the robustness and accuracy of the grain-scale predictions. Including grain reorientation trajectories in the multi-objective calibration improved texture evolution predictions and filtered out physically inconsistent parameter sets that can arise from calibrating against only the stress–strain data. The workflow also demonstrates good transferability of calibrated parameters from a low- to a high-fidelity microstructural model. These results provide practical guidance for integrating in situ microstructural data into CPFEM through efficient, repeatable, and physically meaningful multi-objective calibration.

Search for Higgs Boson Decay to a Charm Quark-Antiquark Pair in Proton-Proton Collisions at s = 13 TeV

A search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a charm quark-antiquark pair, $H → c\bar{c}$, produced in association with a leptonically decaying $V (W \text{or} Z)$ boson is presented. The search is performed with proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13\,\text {TeV}$ collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 . Novel charm jet identification and analysis methods using machine learning techniques are employed. The analysis is validated by searching for $Z → c\bar{c}$ in $VZ$ events, leading to its first observation at a hadron collider with a significance of 5.7 standard deviations. The observed (expected) upper limit on $σ(VH)\mathscr{B}(H → c\bar{c}$) is 0.94 (0.50$^{+0.22}_{– 0.15}$)pb at 95% confidence level (C.L.), corresponding to 14 (7.6$^{+3.4}_{–2.3}$) times the standard model prediction. For the Higgs-charm Yukawa coupling modifier, $κ_c$, the observed (expected) 95% C.L. interval is 1.1 < |$κ_c$| < 5.5 (|$κ_c$| < 3.4), the most stringent constraint to date.

Study of High-Transverse-Momentum Higgs Boson Production in Association with a Vector Boson in the qqbb Final State with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter presents the first study of Higgs boson production in association with a vector boson (V=W or Z) in the fully hadronic qqbb final state using data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb –1 . The vector bosons and Higgs bosons are each reconstructed as large-radius jets and tagged using jet substructure techniques. Dedicated tagging algorithms exploiting b-tagging properties are used to identify jets consistent with Higgs bosons decaying into $b\bar{b}$. Dominant backgrounds from multijet production are determined directly from the data, and a likelihood fit to the jet mass distribution of Higgs boson candidates is used to extract the number of signal events. The VH production cross section is measured inclusively and differentially in several ranges of Higgs boson transverse momentum: 250–450, 450–650, and greater than 650 GeV. The inclusive signal yield relative to the standard model expectation is observed to be μ=1.4$^{+1.0}_{–0.9}$ and the corresponding cross section is 3.1±1.3⁢(stat)$^{+1.8}_{–1.4}$(syst.) pb.

Neutronics Analysis of Shielding Material Alternative to Tungsten Carbide in the FESS-FNSF Facility

Neutron transport calculations have been performed on advanced shielding materials. Metal hydrides and borohydrides were evaluated to find an alternative to tungsten carbide (WC), which is used in the in-vessel components. The study was conducted using a 22.5° sector and a detailed 360° geometry of the Fusion Energy System Studies-Fusion Nuclear Science Facility (FESS-FNSF) using OpenMC and FENDL-3.2b nuclear data library. Here, the neutronics analysis in this article was concentrated on calculating total nuclear (neutron and photon) heating at the magnet and the radiation damage of the inboard vacuum vessel (IBVV). For example, yttrium hydride (YH 2 ) and vanadium hydride (VH 2 ) showed lower radiation damage values compared to WC and other metals. Whereas alternative shielding materials did not show a significant change in the magnet nuclear heating.

Direct selection of functional fluorescent-protein antibody fusions by yeast display

Antibodies are important reagents for research, diagnostics, and therapeutics. Many examples of chimeric proteins combining the specific target recognition of antibodies with complementing functionalities such as fluorescence, toxicity or enzymatic activity have been described. However, antibodies selected solely on the basis of their binding specificities are not necessarily ideal candidates for the construction of chimeras. Here, we describe a high throughput method based on yeast display to directly select antibodies most suitable for conversion to fluorescent chimera. A library of scFv binders was converted to a fluorescent chimeric form, by cloning thermal green protein into the linker between VH and VL, and directly selecting for both binding and fluorescent functionality. This allowed us to directly identify antibodies functional in the single chain TGP format, that manifest higher protein expression, easier protein purification, and one-step binding assays.

Report Summarizing the Mechanical Properties of a Large ODS Ferritic Alloy Ingot by Forging at High Temperatures for Future Mother Tube Production

Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) ferritic alloys are considered the benchmark fuel cladding and core structural material in advanced nuclear energy reactors that require high-temperature strength and creep properties and resistance to radiation damage. The ODS ferritic alloys including 14YWT are produced by mechanical alloying (MA), which is time-consuming and is associated with high manufacturing costs that are not beneficial to being used in advanced nuclear energy reactors. This report summarizes the accomplishments in FY24 in the INM program for producing an ODS ferritic alloy by high-deformation, high-temperature processing of reactive and ferritic alloy powders for advanced reactor fuel cladding applications. Following four hot forging experiments, it was concluded that several significant challenges were encountered that were difficult to overcome. These challenges were related to using high annealing temperatures for pressure assisted sintering processes to produce dense microstructures, but the high annealing temperatures result in long range diffusion of Ti through the bcc Fe lattice and react with the YIG particles that are distributed on the prior surfaces of the ferritic alloy powders. In addition, it was determined that the high deformations induced by forging at high temperatures were not very effective for fracturing the reactive YIG particles into smaller particles and distributing them into the interior of the ferritic alloy powders. Spark plasma sintering was attempted for shortening the time at high temperatures, which led to full densification but the microstructure characterization results still showed that Ti atoms diffused over long distances in the bcc Fe lattice and reacted with the YIG particles. Finally, a short 30 minute high intensity ball milling experiment was conducted on blended 14WT and YIG powders for inducing severe deformations that caused the initially spherical powders of 14WT decorated with the YIG particles on the surfaces to transform to flakes and fracturing of YIG particles into smaller particles that were incorporated into the bcc Fe lattice. Two forgings were performed with the high intensity milled powders: first annealing for 20 minutes at 850ºC followed by forging and second annealing for 20 minutes at 1,100ºC followed by forging. At 850ºC, Ti atoms are effectively immobile, thus allowing for densification albeit incomplete. The deformation by forging after annealing for 20 minutes at 1,100ºC favored dynamic recrystallization processes that led to nano-size grains with very high stored energy due to high dislocation density. The corresponding VH data showed significant hardening that correlated with estimated strengthening of ~1650 MPa. This hybrid processing approach combining high intensity ball milling of powder with annealing and forging showed the most promise for producing an oxide dispersing strengthened ferritic alloy.

Detecting Heavy Neutral SUSY Higgs Bosons Decaying to Sparticles at the High-Luminosity LHC

In supersymmetry (SUSY) models with low electroweak naturalness (natSUSY), which have been suggested to be the most likely version of SUSY to emerge from the string landscape, higgsinos are expected at the few hundred GeV scale, whilst electroweak gauginos inhabit the TeV scale. For TeV-scale heavy neutral SUSY Higgs bosons H and A, as currently required by LHC searches, the dominant decay modes of H,A are gaugino plus higgsino provided these decays are kinematically open. The light higgsinos decay to soft particles, so are largely invisible, whilst the gauginos decay to W, Z or h plus missing transverse energy (ET). Thus, we examine the viability of H,A→W+ET, Z+ET and h+ET signatures at the high luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) in light of large standard model (SM) backgrounds from (mainly) tt¯, VV and Vh production (where V=W,Z). We also examine whether these signal channels can be enhanced over backgrounds by requiring the presence of an additional soft lepton from the decays of the light higgsinos. We find significant regions in the vicinity of mA∼1–2 TeV of the mA vs. tanβ plane, which can be probed at the high luminosity LHC, using these dominant signatures by HL-LHC at 5σ and at the 95% confidence level (CL).

Rare Higgs Processes at CMS and Precision Timing Detector Studies for HL-LHC CMS Upgrade

This thesis describes the search for two rare Higgs processes. The first analysis describes the CMS Run 2 search for $H$ $\rightarrow$ $\mu$$\mu$ decays, with 137.3 fb$^{-1}$ of data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The analysis targeted four different Higgs production modes: the gluon fusion (ggH), the vector boson fusion (VBF), the Higgs-strahlung process (VH), and the production in association with a pair of top quarks (ttH). Each category used a dedicated machine learning based classifier to separate the signal from the background processes. A combined fit from all these categories saw a slight excess in the data corresponding to 3.0 standard deviations at $M$$_{H}$ = 125.38 GeV, and gave the first evidence for the Higgs boson decay to second-generation fermions. The best-fit signal strength and the corresponding 68% CL interval was found to be +0.17?????? = 1.19 $_{-0.39}^{+0.41}$ (stat)$_{-0.16}^{+0.17}$(syst) at $M$$_{H}$ = 125.38 GeV. The second analysis describes the CMS Run 2 search for 𝐻𝐻 → 𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏 with highly boosted Higgs bosons. This analysis used a dedicated jet identification algorithm based on graph neural networks (ParticleNet) to identify boosted H→ bb jets. This search targeted the gluon fusion and the vector boson fusion HH production modes, and put constraints on the allowed values of the various Higgs couplings as: 𝜅𝜆 ∈ [−9.9, 16.9] when 𝜅𝑉 = 1, 𝜅2𝑉 = 1; 𝜅𝑉 ∈ [−1.17, −0.79] ∪ [0.81, 1.18] when 𝜅𝜆 = 1, 𝜅2𝑉 = 1; 𝜅2𝑉 ∈ [0.62, 1.41] when 𝜅𝜆 = 1, 𝜅𝑉 = 1. A scenario with 𝜅2𝑉 = 0 was excluded with a significance of 6.3 standard deviations for the first time, when other H couplings are fixed to their SM values. The combined observed (expected) 95% upper limit on the HH production cross section was found to be 9.9 (5.1) × SM. Finally, this thesis also discusses the planned MIP Timing Detector (MTD) upgrade for CMS at the HL-LHC. The MTD will be a time-of-flight (TOF) detector, designed to provide a precision timing information for charged particles using SiPMs + LYSO scintillating crystals, with a time resolution of ∼30 ps. This thesis describes several R&D tests that have been performed for characterizing the sensor properties (time resolution, light yield, etc.) and optimizing the sensor design geometry. This thesis also contains a description of mock test setups for cooling the sensors, since it is known to be an effective way of mitigating the increased dark current rates in the sensors due to radiation damage.
