Structure and magnetism in epitaxial Fe 1 + x VSb nanocomposite films

The combination of ferromagnetism and semiconducting behavior offers an avenue for realizing novel spintronics and spin-enhanced thermoelectrics. Here we demonstrate the synthesis of doped and nanocomposite half-Heusler Fe 1+x VSb films by molecular beam epitaxy. For dilute excess Fe (x < 0.1), we observe a decrease in the Hall electron concentration and no secondary phases in x-ray diffraction. Magnetotransport measurements suggest weak ferromagnetism that onsets at a temperature of T c ≈ 5 K. For higher Fe content (x > 0.1), ferromagnetic Fe nanostructures precipitate from the semiconducting FeVSb matrix. The Fe/FeVSb interfaces are epitaxial, as observed by transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction. Further, magnetotransport measurements suggest proximity-induced magnetism in the FeVSb from the Fe/FeVSb interfaces, or superparamagnetically coupled Fe-rich clusters, at an onset temperature of T c ≈ 20 K.

Carrier-interference ratios for frequency sharing between frequency-modulated amplitude-modulated-vestigial-sideband television systems

For just perceptible interference, an FM television signal interfering with another FM television signal must have an average signal power that is 26 to 37 db less than the wanted signal power. For an AM-VSB television signal interfering with an FM television signal, the AM-VSB television's sync peak average power must be 18 to 31 db below the FM television signal's average power. Also, when an FM television signal interferes with an AM-VSB signal, the average signal power of the FM signal should be 56 to 59 db below the sync peak average power of the AM-VSB television signal. The range of power ratios occur as a result of different TV scenes used in the tests and different FM-signal frequency deviations used. All tests were performed using 525 line, system M, color-television signals.

Controlling Vibronic Coupling in Chlorophyll Proteins: The Effects of Excitonic Delocalization and Vibrational Localization

Vibrational-electronic (vibronic) coupling plays a critical role in excitation energy transfer in molecular aggregates and pigment-protein complexes (PPCs). But the interplay between excitonic delocalization and vibronic interactions is complex, often leaving even qualitative questions as to what conceptual framework (e.g., Redfield versus Forster theory) should be used to interpret experimental results. To shed light on this issue, we report here on the interplay between excitonic delocalization and vibronic coupling in site-directed mutants of the water soluble chlorophyll protein (WSCP), as reflected in 77 K fluorescence spectra. Experimentally, we find that in PPCs where excitonic delocalization is disrupted (either by mutagenesis or heterodimer formation), the relative intensity of the vibrational sideband (VSB) in fluorescence spectra is suppressed by up to 37% compared to the native protein. Furthermore, numerical simulations reveal that this effect results from the localization of high-frequency vibrations in the coupled system; while excitonic delocalization suppresses the purely electronic transition due to H-aggregate-like dipole-dipole interference, high-frequency vibrations are unaffected, leading to a relative enhancement of the VSB. By comparing VSB intensities of PPCs both in the presence and absence of excitonic delocalization, we extract a set of “local” Huang-Rhys (HR) factors for Chl a in WSCP. More generally, our results suggest a significant role for geometric effects in controlling energy-transfer rates (which depend sensitively on absorption/fluorescence line shapes) in molecular aggregates and PPCs.

Comparison of biofuel life-cycle GHG emissions assessment tools: The case studies of ethanol produced from sugarcane, corn, and wheat

The use of alternative fuels, particularly bio-based fuels, has been an important strategy to achieve greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions compared to petroleum-based fuels. However, discrepancies between results obtained by using different attributional life-cycle assessment (LCA) tools have challenged the credibility of the individual assessments, and as result, the progress towards or compliance with GHG mitigation targets. The objective of this study was to identify the main differences and commonalities in methodological structures, calculation procedures, and assumptions for the major commercial biofuel, ethanol, across three public LCA tools, BioGrace (EU), GHGenius (Canada), and GREET (U.S.), and a research-oriented fourth, the Virtual Sugarcane Biorefinery (VSB), a Brazilian platform for sugarcane ethanol assessments. The calculated emissions across models ranged from 16 to 45 for sugarcane, 43-62 for corn, and 45-68 g CO 2 eq MJ -1 for wheat ethanol. Harmonizing the three public models with VSB assumptions for sugarcane ethanol produced in Brazil, the range was reduced to 16-17 g CO 2 eq MJ -1 for sugarcane ethanol. Agricultural production (e.g., N 2 O emissions from fertilizers; energy and fuel use; straw field-burning; and limestone application) and ethanol shipping were found to be the major causes for variations for differences calculated for sugarcane ethanol. Similarly, harmonizing BioGrace and GHGenius calculations using GREET assumptions for U.S. corn ethanol generated nearly identical results (models varied within a 3% range). The coproduct treatment method was found to be the most influential parameter in the variations calculated for both corn and wheat ethanol. The application of the tools as part of GHG emissions accounting requirements is often defined via regulations and differences and/or conflicting assumptions set-forth in these models lead to most differences observed. Our study provides recommendations for promoting transparency in LCA calculations and assumptions across the tools used in research and development or for regulatory tools regarding biofuels.

Missileborne Artificial Vision System (MAVIS)

Several years ago when INTEL and China Lake designed the ETANN chip, analog VLSI appeared to be the only way to do high density neural computing. In the last five years, however, digital parallel processing chips capable of performing neural computation functions have evolved to the point of rough equality with analog chips in system level computational density. The Naval Air Warfare Center, China Lake, has developed a real time, hardware and software system designed to implement and evaluate biologically inspired retinal and cortical models. The hardware is based on the Adaptive Solutions Inc. massively parallel CNAPS system COHO boards. Each COHO board is a standard size 6U VME card featuring 256 fixed point, RISC processors running at 20 MHz in a SIMD configuration. Each COHO board has a companion board built to support a real time VSB interface to an imaging seeker, a NTSC camera, and to other COHO boards. The system is designed to have multiple SIMD machines each performing different corticomorphic functions. The system level software has been developed which allows a high level description of corticomorphic structures to be translated into the native microcode of the CNAPS chips. Corticomorphic structures are those neural structures with a form similar to that of the retina, the lateral geniculate nucleus, or the visual cortex. This real time hardware system is designed to be shrunk into a volume compatible with air launched tactical missiles. Initial versions of the software and hardware have been completed and are in the early stages of integration with a missile seeker.

Digital modulation schemes for high speed transmission through low bandwidth lowpass analog links

Existing NTSC (National Television System Committee) standard will be phased out and replaced with HDTV (High Definition Television) standard within the next 10 years. Accordingly, the existing video network system operated by NASA will become obsolete and requires either replacement or modification to accommodate digital transmission. Network replacement is extremely expensive, hence, several digital modulation schemes are investigated in this report to accomplish digital transmission over existing analog links saving NASA from the cost of network replacement. There are two competing transmission systems available for HDTV transmission over limited bandwidth channels. The cost and performance of the two competing schemes are remarkably similar. However, the input data rate in such a case is limited to 40 Mbit/s. Transmission of higher data rates is possible using simple signal processing techniques. On the other hand, a third transmission system, multilevel pulse amplitude modulation (M-PAM) is proposed. M-PAM is the first stage of the well known M-VSB. This M-PAM scheme is much simpler and uses the channel more efficiently. The three schemes are compared and preliminary conclusions were made. Despite of several similarities, each modulation scheme has it unique merits. To determine the suitability of each scheme, more investigations and laboratory tests for all schemes are needed.

Focal Plane Arrays of Voltage-Biased Superconducting Bolometers

The 200-micrometer to 3-mm wavelength range has great astronomical and cosmological significance. Science goals include characterization of the cosmic microwave background, measurement of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect in galaxy clusters, and observations of forming galaxies. Cryogenic bolometers are the most sensitive broadband detectors in this frequency range. Because single bolometer pixels are reaching the photon noise limit for many observations, the development of large arrays will be critical for future science progress. Voltage-biased superconducting bolometers (VSBs) have several advantages compared to other cryogenic bolometers. Their strong negative electrothermal feedback enhances their linearity, speed, and stability. The large noise margin of the SQUID readout enables multiplexed readout schemes, which are necessary for developing large arrays. In this paper, we discuss the development of a large absorber-coupled array, a frequency-domain SQUID readout multiplexer, and an antenna-coupled VSB design.
