Extended virtual element method for the Laplace problem with singularities and discontinuities

In this paper, we propose the extended virtual element method (X-VEM) to treat singularities and crack discontinuities that arise in the Laplace problem. The virtual element method (VEM) is a stabilized Galerkin formulation on arbitrary polytopal meshes, wherein the basis functions are implicit (virtual)—they are not known explicitly nor do they need to be computed within the problem domain. In this work, suitable projection operators are used to decompose the bilinear form on each element into two parts: a consistent term that reproduces the first-order polynomial space and a correction term that ensures stability. A similar approach is pursued in the X-VEM with a few notable extensions. To capture singularities and discontinuities in the discrete space, we augment the standard virtual element space with an additional contribution that consists of the product of virtual nodal basis (partition-of-unity) functions with enrichment functions. For discontinuities, basis functions are discontinuous across the crack and for singularities a weakly singular enrichment function that satisfies the Laplace equation is chosen. For the Laplace problem with a singularity, we devise an extended projector that maps functions that lie in the extended virtual element space onto linear polynomials and the enrichment function, whereas for the discontinuous problem, the consistent element stiffness matrix has a block-structure that is readily computed. An adaptive homogeneous numerical integration method is used to accurately and efficiently (no element-partitioning is required) compute integrals with integrands that are weakly singular. Once the element projection matrix is computed, the same steps as in the standard VEM are followed to compute the element stabilization matrix. Numerical experiments are performed on quadrilateral and polygonal (convex and nonconvex elements) meshes for the problem of an $\textit{L}$-shaped domain with a corner singularity and the problem of a cracked membrane under mode III loading, and results are presented that affirm the sound accuracy and demonstrate the optimal rates of convergence in the $\textit{L}^2$ norm and energy of the proposed method.

Thermal energy of a charm-meson molecule in a pion gas

The thermal corrections to the propagator of a loosely bound charm-meson molecule in a pion gas are calculated to next-to-leading order in the heavy-meson expansion using a zero-range effective field theory. Ultraviolet divergences in the charm-meson-pair self energy are canceled by corrections to the charm-meson-pair contact vertex. Terms that are singular at the charm-meson-pair threshold can be absorbed into thermal corrections to the rest energies and kinetic masses of the charm-meson constituents. The remaining terms reduce to a thermal correction to the binding momentum that is proportional to the pion number density and suppressed by the pion/charm-meson mass ratio. The correction gives a tiny decrease in the binding energy of the charm-meson molecule relative to the charm-meson-pair threshold in the pion gas and a change in its thermal width that is small compared to the thermal widths of the charm-meson constituents. These results are encouraging for the prospects of observing X(3872) and $T$$^{+}_{cc}$ (3875) in the expanding hadron gas produced by heavy-ion collisions.

The LHCb state $P^{Λ}_{ψs}$(4338) as a triangle singularity

We present a model for the J/ψ Λ spectrum in B – → J/ψ Λ $\bar{p}$ decays, including the $P^{Λ}_{ψs}$(4338) baryon recently observed by the LHCb collaboration. We assume production via triangle diagrams which couple to the final state via non-perturbative interactions which are constrained by heavy- quark and SU 3 -flavor symmetry. The bulk of the distribution is described by a triangle diagram with a color-favored electroweak vertex, while the sharp $P^{Λ}_{ψs}$(4338) enhancement is due to the ψs triangle singularity in another diagram featuring a 1/2 – baryon consistent with Σ c (2800). We predict a comparable $P^{Λ}_{ψs}$(4338) signal in η c Λ, and anticipate possible large isospin mixing effects ψs through decays to J/ψ Σ 0 and η c Σ 0 .

On Partially Massless Supergravity

Here we investigate a possible supersymmetric extension for the massive gravity in the lowest non-trivial order. For this purpose we construct a cubic interaction vertex for massive spin-2 and massive spin-3/2 fields restricting ourselves with the terms containing no more than one derivative. In-particular, we look for the possibility to have a non-singular partially massless limit for spin-2 that would corresponds to the partially massless supergravity.

Emergent magnetic monopole dynamics in macroscopically degenerate artificial spin ice

Magnetic monopoles, proposed as elementary particles that act as isolated magnetic south and north poles, have long attracted research interest as magnetic analogs to electric charge. In solid-state physics, a classical analog to these elusive particles has emerged as topological excitations within pyrochlore spin ice systems. We present the first real-time imaging of emergent magnetic monopole motion in a macroscopically degenerate artificial spin ice system consisting of thermally activated Ising-type nanomagnets lithographically arranged onto a pre-etched silicon substrate. A real-space characterization of emergent magnetic monopoles within the framework of Debye-Hückel theory is performed, providing visual evidence that these topological defects act like a plasma of Coulomb-type magnetic charges. In contrast to vertex defects in a purely two-dimensional artificial square ice, magnetic monopoles are free to evolve within a divergence-free vacuum, a magnetic Coulomb phase, for which features in the form of pinch-point singularities in magnetic structure factors are observed.

Landau diagrams in AdS and S-matrices from conformal correlators

Quantum field theories in AdS generate conformal correlation functions on the boundary, and in the limit where AdS is nearly flat one should be able to extract an S-matrix from such correlators. We discuss a particularly simple position-space procedure to do so. It features a direct map from boundary positions to (on-shell) momenta and thereby relates cross ratios to Mandelstam invariants. This recipe succeeds in several examples, includes the momentum-conserving delta functions, and can be shown to imply the two proposals in based on Mellin space and on the OPE data. Interestingly the procedure does not always work: the Landau singularities of a Feynman diagram are shown to be part of larger regions, to be called ‘bad regions’, where the flat-space limit of the Witten diagram diverges. To capture these divergences we introduce the notion of Landau diagrams in AdS. As in flat space, these describe on-shell particles propagating over large distances in a complexified space, with a form of momentum conservation holding at each bulk vertex. As an application we recover the anomalous threshold of the four-point triangle diagram at the boundary of a bad region.

Accurate numerical, integral methods for computing drift-kinetic Trubnikov-Rosenbluth potentials

A novel numerical method is employed to compute the integral form of the axi-symmetric Trubnikov-Rosenbluth potentials. Two methods for quadrature in pitch-angle are described and their convergence properties are studied. Careful attention is given to quadrature over a singular Green's function. Here it is shown that an infinite series representation of the Green's function can be used more efficiently than its closed form involving complete elliptic integrals. Then a collocation method in speed, with its associated quadrature scheme, is laid out and its convergence properties are studied. Using the proposed scheme, accurate low-order moments of the field collision operator are obtained using relatively few velocity space degrees of freedom. The scheme is showcased by solving for the equilibrium, axi-symmetric bootstrap current in tokamaks. A C 0 Gauss-Lobatto-Legendre finite element pitch-angle basis with vertex nodes at the trapped/passing boundary is shown, in the context of the integral methods used, to be much more efficient than the more common Legendre polynomial expansion.
