Coaxial airblast atomizers

An experimental investigation was performed to quantify the characteristics of the sprays of coaxial injectors with particular emphasis on those aspects relevant to the performance of rocket engines. Measurements for coaxial air blast atomizers were obtained using air to represent the gaseous stream and water to represent the liquid stream. A wide range of flow conditions were examined for sprays with and without swirl for gaseous streams. The parameters varied include Weber number, gas flow rate, liquid flow rate, swirl, and nozzle geometry. Measurements were made with a phase Doppler velocimeter. Major conclusions of the study focused upon droplet size as a function of Weber number, effect of gas flow rate on atomization and spray spread, effect of nozzle geometry on atomization and spread, effect of swirl on atomization, spread, jet recirculation and breakup, and secondary atomization.

A study of thin liquid sheet flows

This study was a theoretical and experimental investigation of thin liquid sheet flows in vacuum. A sheet flow created by a narrow slit of width, W, coalesces to a point at a distance, L, as a result of surface tension forces acting at the sheet edges. As the flow coalesces, the fluid accumulates in the sheet edges. The observed triangular shape of the sheet agrees with the calculated triangular result. Experimental results for L/W as a function of Weber number, We, agree with the calculated result, L/W = the sq. root of 8We. The edge cross sectional shape is found to oscillate from elliptic to 'cigar' like to 'peanut' like and then back to elliptic in the flow direction. A theoretical one-dimensional model was developed that yielded only elliptic solutions for the edge cross section. At the points where the elliptic shapes occur, there is agreement between theory and experiment.

Formation and Migration Energies of Interstitials in Silicon Under Strain Conditions

Simulation calculations are conducted for Si substrates to analyze formation and diffusion energies of interstitials under strain condition using statics methods .based on a Stillinger-Weber type potential function. Defects in the vicinity of the surface region and in the bulk are examined, and the role played by compressive and tensile strains on the energetics of interstitials is investigated. Results indicate that strain alters defect energetics which, in turn, modifies their diffusion characteristics.

Absolute and Convective Instability of a Liquid Jet

The existence of absolute instability in a liquid jet has been predicted for some time. The disturbance grows in time and propagates both upstream and downstream in an absolutely unstable liquid jet. The image of absolute instability is captured in the NASA 2.2 sec drop tower and reported here. The transition from convective to absolute instability is observed experimentally. The experimental results are compared with the theoretical predictions on the transition Weber number as functions of the Reynolds number. The role of interfacial shear relative to all other relevant forces which cause the onset of jet breakup is explained.

On the wind force needed to dislodge a drop adhered to a surface

The dislodging by dynamic pressure forces of a drop adhered by surface tension to a plane is considered. The method involves the numerical solution of the integrodifferential equation describing the drop shape and the obtaining of the critical Weber number as a function of contact angle hysteresis. The study assumes high-Reynolds-number free-streamline separation from the drop.

Dynamics and Statics of Nonaxisymmetric Liquid Bridges

Theoretical and experimental investigation of the stability of nonaxisymmetric and nonaxisymmetric bridges contained between equal and unequal radii disks as a function of Bond and Weber number with emphasis on the transition from unstable axisymmetric to stable nonaxisymmetric shapes, are conducted. Numerical analysis of the stability of nonaxisymmetric bridges between unequal disks for various orientations of the gravity vector is performed. Experimental and theoretical investigation of large (nonaxisymmetric) oscillations and breaking of liquid bridges are also conducted.

Stability Limits and Dynamics of Nonaxisymmetric Liquid Bridges

Theoretical and experimental investigation of the stability of nonaxisymmetric and nonaxisymmetric bridges contained between equal and unequal radii disks as a function of Bond and Weber number with emphasis on the transition from unstable axisymmetric to stable nonaxisymmetric shapes. Numerical analysis of the stability of nonaxisymmetric bridges for various orientations of the gravity vector for equal and unequal disks. Experimental and theoretical investigation of large (nonaxisymmetric) oscillations and breaking of liquid bridges. This project involves both experimental and theoretical work. Static and dynamic experiments are conducted in a Plateau tank which makes a range of static Bond numbers accessible.

Vapor ingestion in a cylindrical tank with a concave elliptical bottom

An approximate analytical technique is presented for estimating the liquid residual in a tank of arbitrary geometry due to vapor ingestion at any drain rate and acceleration level. The bulk liquid depth at incipient pull-through is defined in terms of the Weber and Bond numbers and two functions that describe the fluid velocity field and free surface shape appropriate to the tank geometry. Numerical results are obtained for the Centaur LH2 tank using limiting approximations to these functions.

On the probability density function of the squared envelope of a sum of random phase vectors

Weber et al. (1980) have found that a generic problem arises in the study of multiuser FHMA/MFSK systems. According to this problem, the presence of the other channel users acts as interference to reception of the desired user's transmission. The present investigation is concerned with a recursive solution in which the recursion parameter is the number of vectors in the sum. A mathematical characterization of such a solution is presented, taking into account the simple two-vector case in which a well-known closed form result is possible. Some numerical results are also discussed. It is pointed out that the considered recursive solution provides a break in the bottleneck associated with the exact computation of the error probability performance of multiuser FHMA/MFSK systems and single access MFSK systems corrupted by multitone jamming.

An analysis of a nonlinear instability in the implementation of a VTOL control system

The contributions to nonlinear behavior and unstable response of the model following yaw control system of a VTOL aircraft during hover were determined. The system was designed as a state rate feedback implicit model follower that provided yaw rate command/heading hold capability and used combined full authority parallel and limited authority series servo actuators to generate an input to the yaw reaction control system of the aircraft. Both linear and nonlinear system models, as well as describing function linearization techniques were used to determine the influence on the control system instability of input magnitude and bandwidth, series servo authority, and system bandwidth. Results of the analysis describe stability boundaries as a function of these system design characteristics.

Convective and absolute instability of a viscous liquid jet

The effect of viscosity on the capillary instability of a liquid jet is examined. The critical Weber number for convective instability is determined as a function of Reynolds number and comparison is made with the inviscid limit. It is shown that certain waves that are neutral in the inviscid case exhibit growth for finite Reynolds numbers.

Free-streamline analysis of deformation and dislodging by wind force of drops on a surface

Free-streamline theory is used to analyze the deformation and dislodging by wind pressure of drops of liquid adhered by surface tension to a solid surface. The critical Weber number for droplets to be dislodged is determined as a function of advancing and receding contact angle. Graphical results for drop shape are in good agreement with observation.

Upper cut-off rigidity for corotation anisotropy during solar activity cycles 20 and 21

At the Eleventh International Conference on Cosmic Rays in 1969, the results of a study of the solar diurnal variations of solar rays observed during the ascending phase of solar activity cycle twenty was discussed. The diurnal variation, observed underground during 1965-68 period, and results from an extraterrestrial anisotropy having a continuously increasing upper cut-off rigidity R sub c were reported. However, the coupling functions applicable to underground telescopes were controversial then. This situation has improved now. Those results wsere re-examined and extended to cover the period 1965-78. The coupling functions given by Murakami et al. for underground muons and those given by Lockwood and Weber for neutron monitors were used showed that a great deal of care should be exercised in the value of R sub c was calculated. Although numerical values of R sub c are a little different, the trend for 1965-68 period remains unchanged. Highest value of R sub c occur in 1970 and the lowest value occurs in 1976.
