Resolution of wide-angle X-ray scattering from a thermoplastic composite

Wide-angle X-ray scattering from a polyetheretherketone/carbonaceous-fiber composite has been resolved using a curve-fit procedure. This resolution yielded under-curve areas for crystalline, amorphous, and fiber scatter which could be used as the basis for an estimation of crystallinity.

Wide-angle X-ray scattering study of heat-treated PEEK and PEEK composite

Samples of poly(etheretherketone) (PEEK) neat resin and APC-2 carbon fiber composite were subjected to various heat treatments, and the effect of quenching and annealing treatments was studied by wide-angle X-ray scattering. It is found that high-temperature treatments may introduce disorder into neat resin and composite PEEK when followed by rapid cooling. The disorder is metastable and can revert to ordered state when the material is heated above its glass transition temperature and then cooled slowly. The disorder may result from residual thermal stresses.

X-Ray-Scattering Measurements Of Strain In PEEK

Internal stress relieved by heating above glass-transition temperature. Report describes wide-angle x-ray scattering and differential scanning calorimetry of specimens of poly(etheretherketone) having undergone various thermal treatments. Wide-angle x-ray scattering particularly useful in determining distances between atoms, crystallinity, and related microstructurally generated phenomena, as thermal expansion and strain. Calorimetric measurements aid interpretation of scattering measurements by enabling correlation with thermal effects.

Estimation of crystallinity in a model thermoplastic composite

Crystallinities as low as 16 percent have been estimated by determination of the interplanar spacing on PET/carbonaceous filament composites with resin content of aobut 25 percent w/w using wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) in the angular range 2 theta = 16-18 deg. The diffraction pattern of the carbonaceous reinforcements masks the major reflections of the resin, and the resin content and the crystallinity are kept low to make the simulation reasonable.

ESR Measurement Of Crystallinity In Semicrystalline Polymers

Photogenerated free radicals decay at different rates in crystalline and amorphous phases. Degree of crystallinity in polymer having both crystalline and amorphous phases measured indirectly by technique based in part on electron-spin-resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. Accuracy of crystallinity determined by new technique equals or exceeds similar determinations by differential scanning calorimetry, wide-angle x-ray scattering, or measurement of density.
