Comprehensive Measurement of the Reactor Antineutrino Spectrum and Flux at Daya Bay

This Letter reports the precise measurement of the reactor antineutrino spectrum and flux based on the full dataset of 4.7 ×10 6 inverse-beta-decay candidates collected at Daya Bay near detectors. Expressed in terms of the inverse-beta-decay yield per fission, the antineutrino spectra from all reactor fissile isotopes and the specific 235 U and 239 Pu isotopes are measured with 1.3%, 3%, and 8% uncertainties, respectively, near the 3 MeV spectrum peak in reconstructed energy, reaching the best precision in the world. The total antineutrino flux and isotopic 235 U and 239 Pu fluxes are precisely measured to be 5.84 ± 0.07, 6.16 ± 0.12, and 4.16 ± 0.21 in units of 10 −43 cm 2 /fission. These measurements are compared with the Huber-Mueller model, the reevaluated conversion model based on the Kurchatov Institute measurement, and the latest summation model (SM2023). Furthermore, the Daya Bay flux shows good consistency with the Kurchatov Institute and SM2023 models but disagrees with the Huber-Mueller model. The Daya Bay spectrum, however, disagrees with all model predictions.

Phase transition in two-dimensional monolayer (1L)-molybdenum disulfide induced by atomic S-basal plane gliding via synchrotron X-ray monochromatic beam radiation for superior electronic performance

Here, in this work, we report a novel approach to reduce the channel resistance by inducing a phase transition behavior from 2H to 1T in a monolayer MoS 2 (1L-MoS 2 ) by a synchrotron X-ray monochromatic beam (mono-beam) radiation. The effects of the biphase structure by the mono-beam on the 1L-MoS2 film were investigated using Raman spectra, photoluminescence (PL) spectra, scanning tunneling microscopy, and scanning tunneling spectroscopy, respectively. Through material characterization, we identified that the lateral sliding of S-vacancies along the S-plane in the 1L-MoS 2 is the key reason for the origin of unidirectional phase transition. The precise phase engineering triggered by the mono-beam radiation process allows the realization of field-effect transistors (FET) with 2X improvement in mobility toward a high on/off ratio (~10 8 ) and a near-ideal subthreshold swing of ~88 mV per decade. The validity of the phase engineering could be further extended for its application as a memory device, exhibiting a gate tunable conduction modulation behavior and a high resistance ratio of ~10 2 at a gate bias of 5 V with endurance of ~100 cycles. Furthermore, an artificial neural network using the synaptic weight update with accuracy of ~93 % was achieved.

Contrasting age-dependent leaf acclimation strategies drive vegetation greening across deciduous broadleaf forests in mid- to high latitudes

Increasing leaf area and extending vegetation growing seasons are two primary drivers of global greening, which has emerged as one of the most significant responses to climate change. However, it remains unclear how these two leaf acclimation strategies would vary across forests at a large spatial scale. Here, in this study, using multiple satellite-based datasets and field measurements, we analysed the temporal changes (Δ) in maximal leaf area index (LAI max ) and length of the growing season (LOS) from 2002 to 2021 across deciduous broadleaf forests (DBFs) in the middle to high latitudes. Contrary to the widely held assumption of coordination, our results revealed a negative correlation between ΔLAI max and ΔLOS. Notably, the trade-offs between ΔLAImax and ΔLOS were strongly explained by stand age. Younger DBFs, with lower baseline LAI max , predominantly located in eastern Asia, displayed an increase in LAI max with small changes in LOS. This acquisitive strategy facilitated younger DBFs to grow more photosynthetically efficient leaves with low leaf mass per area, enhancing their light use efficiency. Conversely, older DBFs with a higher baseline LAI max , primarily located in North America and Europe, extended their LOS by increasing leaf mass per area. This conservative strategy facilitated older DBFs to produce thicker, but less photosynthetically efficient leaves, resulting in decreased light use efficiency. Our findings offer new insights into the contrasting changes in leaf area and growing season length and highlight their divergent impacts on ecosystem functioning.

Nitrogen fixation in Pampinifervens , a new species-rich genus of Aquificaceae that inhabits a wide pH range in terrestrial hot springs

Members of the Aquificota play important roles in hydrogen, sulfur, and carbon cycles in geothermal systems as ubiquitous and abundant chemolithoautotrophs; however, their roles in the nitrogen cycle are poorly defined. Here, we show that Aquificaceae isolate T-2 T from Tengchong, China, fixes nitrogen based on growth with dinitrogen as the sole nitrogen source and incorporation of 15 N atoms when grown with 15 N 2 . We further show evidence that suggests its nitrogen fixation (nif) genes are transcribed in situ in a nearby spring. We propose the name Pampinifervens diazotrophicum gen. et sp. nov., with strain T-2 T (= JCM 35475 T = DSM 116324 T ) as the nomenclatural type. Its close relative designated Pampinifervens florentissimum sp. nov. T-8 T (= CGMC 1.5214 T = JCM 33569 T ) does not fix nitrogen but respires nitrate. Analysis of 104 metagenome-assembled genomes from 84 metagenomes allowed us to circumscribe the genus Pampinifervens and identify at least 16 sympatric Pampinifervens species that dominate the Aquificaceae populations in diverse hot springs in southwest China, with distinct species globally. Analysis of these Pampinifervens genomes revealed variable presence of nif and denitrification genes and frequent gene loss and horizontal transfer. Genes for pH homeostasis were also present in Pampinifervens genomes, with a proliferation in species from Tengchong, consistent with the wide pH growth range of both Pampinifervens isolates and the prevalence of Pampinifervens in both alkaline and acidic springs. The dynamic evolution of nif and denitrification genes, along with pH homeostasis genes, may facilitate the diversification of Pampinifervens into diverse springs with different nitrogen availability.

Electrodepositing Textured Sn Film as a Highly Reversible Anode for Aqueous Batteries

Electrodepositing metal materials in large capacity, at low potential, and with high reversibility serves as the foundation for any aqueous rechargeable battery chemistry to realize the promises of high energy, low cost, and high safety. However, such a foundation is not solid because of the natural tendency of metals to form irregular, nonplanar, and often dendritic morphologies during electrochemical crystallization, which is further amplified in an acidic environment due to the faster kinetics of the coupled proton and mass-transport processes between hydrated metal ions and free metal atoms. As a typical representative, tin metal (Sn 0 ) has potential to achieve high energy in acidic batteries, but its nonuniform large-particle morphology, obtained from traditional electrodeposition, leads to dead Sn 0 formation and deteriorating reversibility, accompanied by the sustained hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and active Sn 0 loss. Here, in this study, we report quaternary onium salts as effective interfacial cocations that, via selective adsorption, steadily texturize Sn 0 deposition along the (211) plane, which is intrinsically inert to the HER, thus regulating the film deposition process by favoring the formation of planar Sn 0 film. Such Sn 0 film brings exceptional reversibility in acidic electrolytes, which translates into sustained cycling stability at applicable areal capacities in both anode-half cells (similar to 1500 deposition/dissolution cycles at 5 mAh cm -2 ) and full cells (350 charge/discharge cycles at 5 mAh cm -2 ). Textured electrodeposition with intrinsic HER-suppression capability provides a universal solution for diverse metal anode materials in rechargeable energy-dense aqueous batteries.

China’s carbon sinks from land-use change underestimated

The size and attribution of the regional net carbon flux from land-use change (LUC) activities (E LUC ) are often highly debated, especially in regions such as China, which has experienced decades-long extensive reforestation activities. Here, in this work, using a LUC dataset incorporating remote-sensing and national forest inventory data with two modelling approaches, we show that E LUC in China shifted from a carbon source to a sink in the 1990s, contributing to a net cumulative CO 2 removal of 2.0 Pg C during 1981–2020. From 2001 to 2020, the average E LUC was -0.14 Pg C yr -1 , accounting for over one-third of the national land carbon sinks. Forest-related LUC activities contributed greatly to national carbon fluxes, while non-forest-related activities played a dominant role in certain areas. Our findings suggest that the carbon sinks from LUC activities in China may be largely underestimated in global assessments, underscoring the need to develop region-specific modelling for evaluation and potential regulation.

Branched-chain amino acid specialization drove diversification within Calditenuaceae ( Caldarchaeia ) and enables their cultivation

Many thermophiles that are abundant in high-temperature geothermal systems have never been cultivated and are poorly understood, including deeply branching members of the archaeal phylum Thermoproteota. Here, we describe the genome-guided cultivation of one such organism, Calditenuis ramacidaminiphagus, and show that it has evolved a heterotrophic metabolism focused on branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs). Initially, fluorescence in situ hybridization and nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry (FISH-nanoSIMS) showed that Cal. ramacidaminiphagus assimilated amino acids rapidly in casamino acid-amended enrichment cultures. Metagenome and metaproteome analyses showed a high abundance and expression of BCAA transporter genes, suggesting a BCAA-focused metabolism. This inference was supported by the subsequent enrichment of Cal. ramacidaminiphagus in BCAA-fed cultures, reaching 2.66×10 6 cells/mL and 48.7% of the community, whereas it was outcompeted when polar amino acids were included. Metabolic reconstruction and metaproteomics suggest that BCAAs are channeled into the mevalonate pathway for lipid biosynthesis and fuel ATP production through the TCA cycle coupled with aerobic respiration and through production of branched-chain organic acids by overflow metabolism. Ancestral state reconstructions and phylogenetic analyses of 62 Caldarchaeales genomes revealed multiple horizontal transfers of BCAA transporters to the ancestor of the genus Calditenuis. Our study highlights the crucial role of BCAAs in the early evolution and niche of this genus, and suggests a high degree of resource partitioning even within low-diversity thermophilic communities.

The electroweak precision constraints of the 2HDM+S

The 2HDM+S is the singlet extension of the Two-Higgs-Doublets Model (2HDM). The singlet field and its mixing with the 2HDM Higgs sector lead to new contributions to the electroweak precision observables, in particular, the oblique parameters. In this paper, we performed a systematic study of the impacts of each mixing angle to the oblique parameters. We adopted the mixing angles and physical Higgs masses as our parameters, which allows a mapping when specific symmetry structure of the Higgs potential and various theoretical considerations are taken into account. We identify five benchmark cases, where at most one mixing angle is nonzero and analyze the 95\% C.L. allowed parameter space by the oblique parameters. In the alignment limit of the 2HDM, we find that other than the usual mass relations of $m_H\sim m_{H^\pm}$ or $m_A\sim m_{H^\pm}$, electroweak precision measurements also impose an upper limit on the neutral Higgs masses. In the cases with nonzero singlet mixing with the 2HDM Higgses $H$ or $A$, we find approximate mass relations of $c^2_{\alpha_{HS}} m_{H} + s^2_{\alpha_{HS}}m_{h_S} = m_{H^\pm}$ or $c^2_{\alpha_{AS}} m_{A} + s^2_{\alpha_{AS}}m_{A_S} = m_{H^\pm}$. Those relations are universal to the 2HDM+S models, with or without further symmetry assumption. We also study the non-alignment limit of the 2HDM+S, which typically has tighter constraints on the masses and mixing angles. At the end, we examine the complementarity between the electroweak precision analyses and the Higgs coupling precision measurements.

Three-Dimensional Helical-Rotating Plasma Structures in Beam-Generated Partially Magnetized Plasmas

Azimuthal structures emerging in beam-generated partially magnetized plasmas are investigated using three-dimensional particle in cell-Monte Carlo collision simulations. Two distinct instability regimes are identified at low pressures. Furthermore, when the gas pressure is sufficiently high, quasineutrality is attained and 2D spiral-arm structures form as a result of the development of a lower-hybrid instability, resulting in enhanced cross-field transport. At lower pressures, quasineutrality is not achieved and a 3D helical-rotating plasma structure forms due to development of the diocotron instability. Analytical formulas are proposed for the critical threshold pressure between these regimes and for the rotation frequency of the helical structures. Preliminary experimental verification is provided.

From Spin to Pseudospin Symmetry: The Origin of Magic Numbers in Nuclear Structure

Magic numbers lie at the heart of nuclear structure, reflecting enhanced stability in nuclei with closed shells. While the emergence of magic numbers beyond 20 is commonly attributed to strong spin-orbit coupling, the microscopic origin of the spin-orbit potential remains elusive, owing to its dependence on the resolution scale and renormalization scheme of nuclear forces. Here, we investigate the evolution of nuclear shell structure with varying momentum resolution in nuclear interactions derived from chiral effective field theory, using the similarity renormalization group to link different scales. We uncover a novel transition from spin symmetry to pseudospin symmetry as the resolution scale decreases, during which magic numbers emerge naturally. A similar pattern is found in calculations using relativistic one-boson-exchange potentials, underscoring the robustness of the phenomenon. This establishes a direct connection between realistic nuclear forces with a high resolution scale and effective nuclear forces at coarse-grained scales, offering a first-principles explanation for the origin of magic numbers and pseudospin symmetry in nuclear shell structure and new insights into the structure of exotic nuclei far from stability

Properties of Heavy Cosmic Nuclei Phosphorus, Chlorine, Argon, Potassium, and Calcium: Results from the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer

We report the unique properties of cosmic phosphorus (P), chlorine (Cl), argon (Ar), potassium (K), and calcium (Ca) fluxes in the GV to TV rigidity range collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) on the International Space Station. With a total of one million events collected over 13.5 years, we observed that the rigidity dependencies of the five fluxes are well described by the sums of a primary cosmic ray component and a secondary cosmic ray component. The abundance ratios of all five elements to Si at the source are accurately determined independent of cosmic ray propagation. The source abundance of Ar and Ca (even-𝑍 elements) is larger than P, Cl, and K (odd-𝑍 elements). The secondary components of the P and the Cl fluxes are each ∼1/3 of the F flux, and the secondary components of the Ar, K, and Ca fluxes are each ∼1/2 of the F flux. The twenty elements measured by AMS, from He to Ca and Fe, can be categorized into four classes, two primary and two secondary, based on their rigidity dependence.

New level scheme and lifetime measurement of the 13/2 + state in 209 Po

The level structure of 209 Po has been studied by in-beam 𝛾-ray spectroscopy with the 209 Bi ⁢( 6 Li ,𝛼⁢2⁢𝑛) 209 Po reaction at beam energies of 28, 30, 34 MeV. The level scheme of 209 Po is expanded by the 𝛾−𝛾 coincidence measurement, where 27 new transitions and 23 new levels are observed. The lifetimes of 13/2 − , 17/2 − , and 23/2 + states are obtained and are consistent with the previous work, while the one of the 13/2 + state is measured for the first time. A configuration-interaction-shell-model calculation is performed, and its results are compared with the experimental results for 209 Po , with an emphasis on the coupling between the single valence neutron hole and the even-even core of 210 Po . A systematic comparison of the 13/2 + state in N = 125 chain is also studied in the current work.

First Measurement of Missing Energy due to Nuclear Effects in Monoenergetic Neutrino Charged-Current Interactions

We present the first measurement of the missing energy due to nuclear effects in monoenergetic, muon neutrino charged-current interactions on carbon, originating from 𝐾 + → 𝜇 + ⁢𝜈 𝜇 decay at rest (𝐸 𝜈 𝜇 = 235.5 MeV), performed with the J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at the J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source liquid scintillator based experiment. Toward characterizing the neutrino interaction, ostensibly 𝜈 𝜇 ⁢𝑛 → 𝜇 − ⁢𝑝 or 𝜈 𝜇 ⁢ 12 C → 𝜇 − ⁢ 12 N, we define the missing energy as the energy transferred to the nucleus (𝜔) minus the kinetic energy of the outgoing proton(s), 𝐸 𝑚 ≡ 𝜔−∑ 𝑇 𝑝 , and relate this to visible energy in the detector, 𝐸 𝑚 = 𝐸 𝜈 𝜇 ⁡(235.5 MeV) − 𝑚 𝜇⁡ (105.7 MeV) + [𝑚 𝑛 − 𝑚 𝑝⁡ (1.3 MeV)] − 𝐸 vis . The missing energy, which is naively expected to be zero in the absence of nuclear effects (e.g., nucleon separation energy, Fermi momenta, and final-state interactions), is uniquely sensitive to many aspects of the interaction, and has previously been inaccessible with neutrinos. The shape-only, differential cross section measurement reported, based on a (77 ± 3)% pure double-coincidence kaon decay-at-rest signal (621 total events), provides detailed insight into neutrino-nucleus interactions, allowing even the nuclear orbital shell of the struck nucleon to be inferred. The measurement provides an important benchmark for models and event generators at hundreds of MeV neutrino energies, characterized by the difficult-to-model transition region between neutrino-nucleus and neutrino-nucleon scattering, and relevant for applications in nuclear physics, neutrino oscillation measurements, and Type-II supernova studies.

U-Surf: a global 1 km spatially continuous urban surface property dataset for kilometer-scale urban-resolving Earth system modeling

High-resolution urban climate modeling has faced substantial challenges due to the absence of a globally consistent, spatially continuous, and accurate dataset to represent the spatial heterogeneity of urban surfaces and their biophysical properties. This deficiency has long obstructed the development of urban-resolving Earth system models (ESMs) and ultra-high-resolution urban climate modeling, over large domains. Here, we present U-Surf, a first-of-its-kind 1 km resolution present-day (circa 2020) global continuous urban surface parameter dataset. Using the urban canopy model (UCM) in the Community Earth System Model as a base model for satisfying dataset requirements, U-Surf leverages the latest advances in remote sensing, machine learning, and cloud computing to provide the most relevant urban surface biophysical parameters, including radiative, morphological, and thermal properties, for UCMs at the facet and canopy level. Generated using a systematically unified workflow, U-Surf ensures internal consistency among key parameters, making it the first globally coherent urban canopy surface dataset. U-Surf significantly improves the representation of the urban land heterogeneity both within and across cities globally; provides essential, high-fidelity surface biophysical constraints to urban-resolving ESMs; enables detailed city-to-city comparisons across the globe; and supports next-generation kilometer-resolution Earth system modeling across scales. U-Surf parameters can be easily converted or adapted to various types of UCMs, such as those embedded in weather and regional climate models, as well as air quality models. The fundamental urban surface constraints provided by U-Surf can also be used as features for machine learning models and can have other broad-scale applications for socioeconomic, public health, and urban planning contexts. We expect U-Surf to advance the research frontier of urban system science, climate-sensitive urban design, and coupled human–Earth systems in the future. The dataset is publicly available at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.11247598 (Cheng et al., 2024).

Charged Higgs search in 2HDM

In this paper, we present a comprehensive study of the collider search limits on the charged Higgses in the four types of Two Higgs Double Models (2HDM). In addition to constraints from flavor physics measurements, we include both the LEP charged Higgs search channels, as well as the LHC search results on the light and heavy charged Higgses. We consider both the conventional charged Higgs search channels of H ± → τν, cs, cb, tb, and the latest search results on the exotic decay channels H ± → AW ± /HW ± . We find that H ± → AW ± /HW ± are complementary to the conventional fermionic channels for m H ± < m t . For heavy H ± , H ± → AW ± /HW ± extend the reach of tan β beyond that of H ± → tb in the Type-L 2HDM. We also present the combined reach of all the neutral and charged Higgs searches.

Measurement of the phase between strong and electromagnetic amplitudes in the decay J/ψ → ϕη

The first direct measurement of the relative phase between the strong and electromagnetic amplitudes for a J/ψ decaying into a vector-pseudoscalar final state is performed using 26 energy points of e + e − annihilation data between 3.00 GeV and 3.12 GeV. The data sets were collected by the BESIII detector with a total integrated luminosity of 452 pb −1 . By investigating the interference pattern in the cross section lineshape of e + e − → ϕη, the relative phase between the strong and electromagnetic amplitudes of J/ψ decay is determined to be within [133°, 228°] at 68% confidence level.

Au assisted smooth ultrathin epitaxial ZnO film grown by pulsed laser deposition on sapphire(0001)

High quality ZnO has applications in photonics and electronics. Literature has shown that continuous, but rough ZnO film can be grown on sapphire substrate by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). In this work, ZnO and Au were co-deposited by PLD on sapphire(0001) substrates from a single ZnO target overlaid with an Au strip that serves as a catalyst. The reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) patterns show paired double stripes from sample of ZnO-Au where the difference of in-plane lattice parameters between ZnO and Au is 11.4 %. The two-dimensional (2D) reciprocal space maps constructed from azimuthal RHEED (ARHEED) patterns reveal parallel epitaxial relationship between ZnO and Au in the continuous ZnO-Au film on sapphire substrate. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) cross section images and energy dispersive spectroscopy maps show a minute amount of Au nanocrystals distributed in the entire ultrathin ZnO film. Atomic force microscopy shows the root-mean-square roughness of the surface of ultrathin ZnO film with Au is in the sub-nm range. The ARHEED and TEM results show that a couple of atomic percentages of Au co-deposited with ZnO catalyzes the growth of smooth ultrathin epitaxial ZnO film.

Dithieno[3,2-c:3′,2′‑ h ][2,6]naphthyridine-4,9(5H,10H)-dione-Based Conjugated Polymers for High Stable n‑Type Organic Electrochemical Transistors

Amide/imide-based conjugated polymers have been utilized as n-type OECT materials and have demonstrated promising device performance. However, their performance remains insufficient in terms of both efficiency and stability, which limits their practical applications. The development of conjugated polymers based on amide and imide groups represents a promising approach to address this issue. Here, in this study, we introduced dithieno[3,2-c:3′,2′-h][2,6]naphthyridine-4,9(5H,10H)-dione (TVTDA) into the design of the OECT materials for the first time. By copolymerizing it with (E)-2,2′-(ethene-1,2-diyl)bis(thiophene-3-carbonitrile), we prepared two polymers, TVTDA-2CNTVT-ST and TVTDA-2CNTVT-BR, which contain linear or branched ethylene glycol side chains, respectively. OECT devices based on these polymers demonstrate n-type charge transport characteristics, achieving promising μC* values of 7.17 and 26.5 F cm –1 V –1 s –1 for TVTDA-2CNTVT-ST and TVTDA-2CNTVT-BR, respectively. The higher electron mobility and μC* of TVTDA-2CNTVT-BR can be attributed to its mixed edge-on and face-on stacking mode, larger crystalline coherence length, and larger domain size in the thin film. To our delight, the OECT devices based on both polymers exhibit good operational stability after operating in an aqueous solution for 2000 s, with current retention rates exceeding 93%, representing the high level among the OECT devices based on amide/imide-conjugated polymers. Our study demonstrates that the TVTDA unit holds great potential for constructing high-performance n-type OECT materials.
