Manipulating Cu vacancy in Yb triangular lattice Materials: Investigating the quantum disordered compound CuYbSe 2 and spin glass Cu 2.73 ⁢YbP 2

Yb-based triangular lattice materials have attracted significant attention due to their potential for hosting exotic magnetic quantum states. In this paper, we report the structural, magnetic, and thermodynamic properties of two Yb triangular lattice compounds with vacancy disorder at nonmagnetic Cu sites: CuYbSe 2 and Cu 2.73 ⁢YbP 2 . Single-crystal x-ray diffraction determines notable Cu-site vacancies in both materials. Unlike a single Cu site with 0.5 occupancy in CuYbSe 2 , Cu 2.73 ⁢YbP 2 only presents 27% vacancies on one of three Cu sites. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate dominant antiferromagnetic interactions between Yb 3+ ions. The effective magnetic moment is consistent with an effective spin-1/2 state of Yb 3+ . CuYbSe 2 exhibits strong magnetic anisotropy between in-plane and out-of-plane directions with the estimated exchange interactions 𝐽 𝑎 /𝑘 B = 6.48 K and 𝐽 𝑐 /𝑘 B = 2.55 K. No magnetic ordering is observed down to 0.4 K, supporting its quantum disordered ground state and candidacy as a quantum spin liquid. In contrast, Cu 2.73 ⁢YbP 2 shows clear evidence of spin freezing at 4.5 K in both magnetization and heat capacity data, indicating a spin glass state. The field-induced magnetic orders are found in CuYbSe 2 . These results highlight the critical role of structural vacancies in perturbing Yb-based triangular lattices. In conclusion, we demonstrate that while the intrinsic Yb triangular lattices are comparable, the presence of Cu vacancies can fundamentally alter the magnetic ground state—tuning the system between quantum disordered and spin glass behavior.

Materials Data on YbP by Materials Project

YbP is Halite, Rock Salt structured and crystallizes in the cubic Fm-3m space group. The structure is three-dimensional. Yb3+ is bonded to six equivalent P3- atoms to form a mixture of corner and edge-sharing YbP6 octahedra. The corner-sharing octahedral tilt angles are 0°. All Yb–P bond lengths are 2.90 Å. P3- is bonded to six equivalent Yb3+ atoms to form a mixture of corner and edge-sharing PYb6 octahedra. The corner-sharing octahedral tilt angles are 0°.

Variations of the earth's magnetic field and rapid climatic cooling: A possible link through changes in global ice volume

A possible relationship between large scale changes in global ice volume, variations in the earth's magnetic field, and short term climatic cooling is investigated through a study of the geomagnetic and climatic records of the past 300,000 years. The calculations suggest that redistribution of the Earth's water mass can cause rotational instabilities which lead to geomagnetic excursions; these magnetic variations in turn may lead to short-term coolings through upper atmosphere effects. Such double coincidences of magnetic excursions and sudden coolings at times of ice volume changes have occurred at 13,500, 30,000, 110,000, and 135,000 YBP.

Fault identification using multidisciplinary techniques at the Mars/Uranus Station antenna sites

A fault investigation was performed at the Mars and Uranus antenna sites at the Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex in the Mojave desert. The Mars/Uranus Station consists of two large-diameter reflector antennas used for communication and control of deep-space probes and other missions. The investigation included interpretation of Landsat thematic mapper scenes, side-looking airborne radar transparencies, and both color-infrared and black-and-white aerial photography. Four photolineaments suggestive of previously undocumented faults were identified. Three generally discrete morphostratigraphic alluvial-fan deposits were also recognized and dated using geomorphic and soil stratigraphic techniques. Fourteen trenches were excavated across the four lineaments; the trenches show that three of the photolineaments coincide with faults. The last displacement of two of the faults occurred between about 12,000 and 35,000 years ago. The third fault was judged to be older than 12,000 years before present (ybp), although uncertainty remains. None of the surface traces of the three faults crosses under existing antennas or structures; however, their potential activity necessitates appropriate seismic retrofit designs and loss-prevention measures to mitigate potential earthquake damage to facilities and structures.

Responding to Climate Change: Adelie Penguins Confront Astronomical and Ocean Boundaries

Long-distance migration enables many organisms to take advantage of lucrative breeding and feeding opportunities during summer at high latitudes and then to move to lower, more temperate latitudes for the remainder of the year. The latitudinal range of the Ad lie penguin spans ~ 22 deg. Penguins from northern colonies may not migrate, but due to the high latitude of Ross Island colonies, these penguins almost certainly undertake the longest migrations for the species. Previous work has suggested that Adelies require both pack ice and some ambient light at all times of year. Over a 3-yr period, which included winters of both extensive and reduced sea ice, we investigated migratory routes and characteristics and wintering locations of Adelie Penguins from two colonies of very different size on Ross Island, Ross Sea, the southernmost colonies for any penguin. We acquired data from 3-16 Geolocation Sensors affixed to penguins each year at both Cape Royds and Cape Crozier in 2003-2005. Migrations averaged 12,760 km, with the longest being 17,600 km, and were in part facilitated by pack ice movement. Trip distances varied annually, but not by colony. Penguins rarely traveled north of the main sea ice pack, and used areas with high sea-ice concentration, ranging from 75-85%, about 500 km inward from the ice edge. They also used locations where there was some twilight (2-7 hr with sun greater than 6 below horizon). We review how Adelie Penguin migration has likely changed since withdrawal of the West Antarctic Ice 35 Sheet across the Ross Sea beginning 12,000 yBP. If sea ice extent in the Ross Sea sector decreases, as predicted by climate models, we can expect change in wintering areas, the location of which ultimately may be limited more by the availability of adequate light for visual foraging than by the availability of suitable pack-ice.
