Modifications to the relationship between the magnetic field and weak Zeeman features in the spectra of astrophysical masers

Numerical solutions are presented for the equations of radiative transfer for astrophysical masers in a magnetic field to describe the observed weak circular polarization of H2O and SiO masers. Previously unrecognized intensity-dependent effects are found to produce circular polarization which resembles that of the usual Zeeman effect. Astrophysical H2O, SiO, and perhaps other masers are likely to be radiatively saturated with rates for stimulated emission that are within 1-2 orders of magnitude of the Zeeman frequency. Under these conditions, the circular polarization found here tends to be larger (but can be smaller) and may be of opposite sign from that given by the standard treatment for polarized Zeeman spectra.

Mesospheric Observations and Modeling of the Zeeman Split 233.9 GHz O-18O-16 line

Observations made from Kitt Peak, AZ, of the 233.9 GHz emission line of O-18O-16 in the upper stratosphere and lower mesosphere are reported. A good model fit to the line is obtained by incorporation of pressure and temperature broadening effects, as well as a Zeeman splitting algorithm that uses a standard geomagnetic field model and a paramagnetic Hamiltonian description of the molecular energy states. These observations are used, along with the well known O-18O-16 mixing ratio, to establish absolute calibration for observations of other chemical species from Kitt Peak. Repeated measurements show no change in this absolute calibration between observation dates. The wide magnetic splitting (+/-1.8 MHz) exhibited by this line with only six Zeeman components provides a unique test of middle atmosphere Zeeman effect model calculations, supporting the use Of 02 lines by microwave atmospheric sounders to measure pressure and temperature.

Zeeman Tuning Rates in the v3 Band of NO2

Zeeman spectra of the v3 fundamental (at approximately 1620 c/m) of nitrogen dioxide (14N02) have been recorded with magnetic fields of approximately 500 Gauss using a FTS (at the Kitt Peak National Observatory), as well as a tunable diode laser. At low magnetic fields the Zeeman effect is small compared to the spin-rotation interaction, and the Zeeman tuning rates are expected to be linear with magnetic field. Measured tuning rates of the Q-branch (KA = 2 - 9, N = 2 - 6) sigma transitions are compared to those expected for 2Sigma transitions in low magnetic fields, 2mu ogB/(2N+l). These measurements are required in the data analysis of an ultra-sensitive (pptv) in situ detector based on magnetic-rotation spectroscopy.

Zeeman observations of W Sgr

A new precise method for measuring magnetic fields on Zeeman plates of the southern Cepheid 'W Sgr' is reviewed. Ten plates over the 7.6(d) period of pulsation show two extrema in the measured values of the effective magnetic field. The method has a precision of + or - 0.4 microns in the Zeeman shift corresponding to + or - 50 Gauss (g). A negative spike of -220 g occurred at the time of arrival of the compressional wave of pulsation at the stellar surface. A positive field of +270 g occurred at the phase of most rapid contraction near the temperature minimum of the pulsation cycle.

Performance of the Zeeman analyzer system of the McDonald Observatory 2.7 meter telescope

The paper describes a multichannel photoelectric Zeeman analyzer at the coude spectrograph of the McDonald 2.7 m reflector. A comparison of Lick and McDonald observations of HD 153882 reveals no significant difference in slopes or zero points of the two magnetic fields indicating that the systematic scale difference of 30-40% is probably instrumental in origin. Observations of the magnetic variable beta Cor Bor revealed a more nearly sinusoidal magnetic curve with less internal scatter than the photographically determined field measures of the Lick and Mauna Kea Zeeman systems. Investigation of periodicity in the secularly varying magnetic minima of beta Cor Bor did not yield evidence of previously noted periodicities other than that expected from the time structure of the data sampling.

Stabilized Zeeman split laser

The development of a stablized Zeeman split laser for use in a polarization profilometer is discussed. A Hewlett-Packard laser was modified to stabilize the Zeeman split beat frequency thereby increasing the phase measurement accuracy from the Hewlett-Packard 3 degrees to an accuracy of .01 degrees. The addition of a two layered inductive winding converts the laser to a current controlled oscillator whose frequency is linearly related to coil current. This linear relationship between coil current and laser frequency permits phase locking the laser frequency to a stable crystal controlled reference frequency. The stability of the system is examined and the equipment operation procedures are outlined.

Zeeman Tuning Rate for Q Branch Transitions in the v3 Band of NO2

Zeeman tuning rates have bee a measured for Q branch transitions in the v3 band of NO2(approx.1610/cm) for magnetic fields of up to 564 Gauss. The average measured tuning rate is 0.1815(53) x 10(exp -3)/cm/Gauss with no dependence on Ka within the approx. equal to 3% standard deviation. Despite significant ,pin-rotation interaction between several of the observed levels the result agrees with the simple linear model for Honda case (be molecules (tuning rate = 2muogs = 0.18696 x 10(exp -3)/cm/Gauss) which neglects the spin-rotation interaction between different J states. The Zeeman effect is analyzed in a full treatment of the Hamiltonian, including spin-rotation interaction, in order to account for the agreement with 2muogs and to explore the onset of spin-rotation effects in the spectra as the magnetic field is increased.

[Probing Planck-scale Physics with a Ne-21/He-3 Zeeman Maser]

The Ne-21/He-3 Zeeman maser is a recently developed device which employs co-located ensembles of Ne-21 and He-3 atoms to provide sensitive differential measurements of the noble gas nuclear Zeeman splittings as a function of time, thereby greatly attenuating common-mode systematic effects such as uniform magnetic field variations. The Ne-21 maser will serve as a precision magnetometer to stabilize the system's static magnetic field, while the He-3 maser is used as a sensitive probe for violations of CPT and Lorentz symmetry by searching for small variations in the 3He maser frequency as the spatial orientation of the apparatus changes due to the rotation of the Earth (or placement on a rotating table). In the context of a general extension of the Standard Model of particle physics, the Ne-21/He-3 maser will provide the most sensitive search to date for CPT and Lorentz violation of the neutron: better than 10(exp -32) GeV, an improvement of more than an order of magnitude over past experiments. This exceptional precision will offer a rare opportunity to probe physics at the Planck scale. A future space-based Ne-21/He-3 maser or related device could provide even greater sensitivity to violations of CPT and Lorentz symmetry, and hence to Planck-scale physics, because of isolation from dominant systematic effects associated with ground-based operation, and because of access to different positions in space-time.

Probing Planck-Scale physics with a Ne-21/He-3 Zeeman maser

We completed a search for a sidereal annual variation in the frequency difference between co-located Xe-129 and He-3 Zeeman masers. This search sets a stringent limit of approximately 10(exp -27) GeV on boost-dependent Lorentz and CPT violation involving the neutron. A paper reporting this result has been accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters. We also completed detailed modeling and design of the next-generation dual-noble-gas Zeeman maser for an improved test of Lorentz and CPT violation, and begin construction of this device.

Zeeman effect of As II.

Spectrograms of As electrodeless-discharge tubes operated in a field of 24,025 G have given Zeeman patterns for 232 As II spectral lines from 2361 to 10,556 A and yielded 80 Lande g factors, of which more than half are new. There is agreement between these and the g values calculated by least-squares fitting for single configurations or for multiconfigurations, where configuration interaction is noticeable. All of the measured g values as well as the energy levels are used in the fitting process.

Zeeman effect of P II.

An investigation was conducted of the Zeeman effect of PII because it provides unique J-value assignments together with a sensitive check on the accuracy of wave functions obtained from least-squares fitting of energy levels. About forty new lines were added to the spectrum, and g values were obtained for 76 levels of PII. By incorporating this new experimental material in a systematic program of least-squares calculations, supplemented by ab initio calculations, it was possible to complete the description of the 3p5p and 3p5d configurations.

Zeeman effect in the X-ray star candidates HD 77581 and theta super 2 Orionis.

The discovery of Zeeman effects is reported in HD 77581 and theta super 2 Orionis, optical candidates for the X-ray sources Vela XR-1 and 2U 0525-06, respectively. The maximum longitudinal magnetic fields recorded were -10,000 G in HD 77581 and +1500 G in theta super 2 Ori. Various polarimetric data are also given, including evidence for a variable linear polarization in HD 77581.
