New layered quaternary Zintl pnictide oxides Ba 2 Zn 2 Pn 2 O ( Pn = Sb, Bi): Discovery, crystal structures, band engineering, and transport properties

Three new heteroanionic oxypnictides, Ba 2 Zn 2 Sb 2 O, Ba 2 Zn 2 Bi 2 O, and the solid solution Ba 2 Zn 2 Sb 2−x Bi x O (x ≈ 1.1–1.6), have been synthesized and structurally characterized. They are isostructural with their Mn-bearing analog, adopting the Ba 2 Mn 2 Sb 2 O-type structure (space group P6 3 /mmc, No. 194), and feature a double-layered 2D $^{2}_{∞}$ [Zn 2 Pn 2 O] 2- substructure (Pn = Sb, Bi, Sb/Bi) composed of corner-sharing, distorted tetrahedral ZnPn 3 O units. Electronic structure calculations reveal a systematic progression from semiconducting Ba 2 Zn 2 Sb 2 O to metallic Ba 2 Zn 2 Bi 2 O as Bi content increases. These trends are corroborated by transport property measurements, with Ba 2 Zn 2 Sb 0.9(1) Bi 1.1 O exhibiting relatively low electrical resistivity, high Hall mobilities of ∼160 cm 2 /V·s, and large Seebeck coefficients from 69 to 132 μV K −1 over the 300–600 K temperature range. Comparison with structurally related Zintl pnictides, such as SrIn 2 As 2 and PrZn 3 As 3 phases, situates Ba 2 Zn 2 Pn 2 O (Pn = Sb, Bi) within a broader family of heteroanionic oxypnictide Zintl compounds, highlighting their structural flexibility and amenability to band engineering. Finally, electronic structure and bonding considerations point to tunable semiconducting behavior and underscore the relevance of these materials for thermoelectric and topological applications.

Trickier than It Looks: Isomerization between Five- and Six-Coordinated Zinc in Heterometallic Li 2 Zn 2 Molecule

This report describes the synthesis and characterization of two hetero bi metallic Li–Zn coordination isomers [Li 2 Zn 2 (tbaoac) 6 ] (tbaoac = tert -butyl acetoacetato) that have been isolated separately by the same stoichiometric reaction run in different organic solvents. The 6-coordinated zinc isomer ( 6-Zn ) was synthesized in acetone with high yield, while the 5-coordinated one ( 5-Zn ) was readily obtained from ethanol. The 5-Zn isomer has a low solubility in organic solvents such as alkanes and haloalkanes, while its 6-Zn counterpart exhibits a good solubility in almost all common solvents. Two isomeric molecules feature similar centrosymmetric tetranuclear cyclic assemblies, which are different in their arrangement of tbaoac ligands. While all ligands act as μ 2 -type in the structure of 5-Zn , the two tbaoac groups chelating Li appear as μ 3 -type in 6-Zn , thus providing an additional coordination for Zn ions. However, the real structural transformation between these isomers was shown to be more complex than simply making or breaking a couple of Zn–O bonds. X-ray single-crystal structure analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, multinuclear NMR, DART mass spectrometry, ICP-OES analysis, and TGA have been employed for the characterization of the isomers. The combination of powder X-ray diffraction and 1 H NMR investigation revealed that 6-Zn isomer can be quantitatively transformed to 5-Zn in ethanol, while the reverse conversion instantly takes place in acetone.

Luminescent Zn 2 GeO 4 :Mn 2+ Nanoparticles with High Quantum Yield for Salivary Protein Detection

Zinc germanate doped with Mn 2+ (Zn 2 GeO 4 :Mn 2+ ) is known to be a green luminescence phosphor with many applications in biosensing and bioimaging. This study presents a simple method for creating small size Zn 2 GeO 4 :Mn 2+ nanoparticles using a combination of the coprecipitation–molten salt synthesis method. These nanoparticles exhibit bright green luminescence under UV excitation. After surface functionalization, these nanoparticles were then used to develop a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET)-based immunoassay. This immunoassay shows a detection range of 5–20 ng/mL of C-reactive protein (CRP), which suggests its potential for simple solution CRP detection and broader applications in protein biosensing.

SABRE-SHEATH hyperpolarized 15 N 2 -imidazole for Zn 2+ sensing

Zinc ions are essential for numerous biological functions and activities. Accordingly, Zn 2+ sensors are crucial in biomedical research to understand the role of Zn 2+ in health and disease. Here, we demonstrated the viability of SABRE-SHEATH hyperpolarized 15 N 2 -imidazole, providing an NMR signal enhancement of 45 700 fold (p = 2.15%), as a probe for Zn 2+ sensing by monitoring the Zn-imidazole interaction using NMR and extracted a LOD of 1.3 mM. This study is one of the first demonstrations of SABRE-SHEATH hyperpolarized 15 N as a sensor of other non-hyperpolarized species, which promises chemical sensing without penetration-depth limitations.

New Trick for an Old Dog: From Prediction to Properties of “Hidden Clathrates” Ba 2 Zn 5 As 6 and Ba 2 Zn 5 Sb 6

The zinc–antimony phase space has been heavily investigated due to the structural complexity and abundance of high-performing thermoelectric materials. Consequentially, the desire to use zinc and antimony as framework elements to encage rattling cations and achieve phonon-glass-electron-crystal-type properties has remained an enticing goal with only two alkali metal clathrates to date, Cs 8 Zn 18 Sb 28 and K 58 Zn 122 Sb 207 . Guided by Zintl electron-counting predictions, here we explored the Ba–Zn–Pn (Pn = As, Sb) phase space proximal to the expected composition of the type-I clathrate. In situ powder X-ray diffraction studies revealed two “hidden” compounds which can only be synthesized in a narrow temperature range. The ex situ synthesis and crystal growth unveiled that instead of type-I clathrates, compositionally close but structurally different new clathrate-like compounds formed, Ba 2 Zn 5 As 6 and Ba 2 Zn 5 Sb 6 . These materials crystallize in a unique structure, in the orthorhombic space group Pmna with the Wyckoff sequence i 2 h 6 gfe. Single-phase synthesis enabled the exploration of their transport properties. Rattling of the Ba cations in oversized cages manifested low thermal conductivity, which, coupled with the high Seebeck coefficients observed, are prerequisites for a promising thermoelectric material. Potential for further optimization of the thermoelectric performance by aliovalent doping was computationally analyzed.

Water or Anion? Uncovering the Zn 2+ Solvation Environment in Mixed Zn(TFSI) 2 and LiTFSI Water-in-Salt Electrolytes

Applications of aqueous zinc batteries for grid-scale energy storage are limited by their poor reversibility and the competing water splitting reaction. The recent invention of a water-in-salt (WIS) electrolyte concept provides a new route enabling a stable and highly reversible aqueous zinc battery chemistry. In the present work, a mixed zinc bis(trifluoromethane sulfonyl)imide (Zn(TFSI) 2 ) and LiTFSI WIS electrolyte was studied using X-ray total scattering, X-ray absorption, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in conjunction with classical molecular dynamics simulations. It was found that, in the highly concentrated WIS electrolyte consisting of 1 m Zn(TFSI) 2 and 20 m LiTFSI, Zn 2+ cations are mainly solvated by six waters in their first solvation shell, while the TFSI – anions are completely excluded. This ion solvation picture is fundamentally different from the previous understandings. The results suggest that additional studies are needed to fully understand the unusual stability and reversibility of zinc-WIS electrolyte-based batteries.

NASICON Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 Enables Quasi-Two-Stage Na + and Zn 2+ Intercalation for Multivalent Zinc Batteries

Identifying positive electrode materials capable of reversible multivalent electrochemistry in electrolytes containing divalent ions such as Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ , and Zn 2+ at high operating potentials remains an ongoing challenge in “beyond lithium-ion” research. In this paper, we explore the Zn 2+ charge-storage mechanism of a vanadium-based Na + superionic conductor (NASICON), Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 . By using X-ray synchrotron techniques to unravel potential-dependent structure–property relationships, we ascribe the reversible electrochemical behavior of Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 to a quasi-two-stage intercalation process that involves both Na+ and Zn 2+ . Initial charging of Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 leads to a Na + -extracted phase corresponding to Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 , whereas subsequent discharge results predominantly in Na + intercalation followed by Zn 2+ intercalation. Operando X-ray diffraction of Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 was used to study the phase changes associated with the first charge/discharge process, and ex situ measurements were used to precisely link the changes in the crystal structure to a quasi-two-stage intercalation of Na + and Zn 2+ . The corresponding changes in the V-oxidation state, V-O coordination, and the presence of Zn 2+ were confirmed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The results of this work present a comprehensive understanding of the charge-storage properties for a well-established NASICON structure that confers both the high capacity (~100 mA h g -1 ) and high potential (1.35 and 1.1 V vs Zn/Zn 2+ ).

Advancing Heteroanionicity in Zintl Phases: Crystal Structures, Thermoelectric and Magnetic Properties of Two Quaternary Semiconducting Arsenide Oxides, Eu 8 Zn 2 As 6 O and Eu 14 Zn 5 As 12 O

Two novel quaternary oxyarsenides, Eu 8 Zn 2 As 6 O and Eu 14 Zn 5 As 12 O, were synthesized through metal flux reactions, and their crystal structures were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. Eu 8 Zn 2 As 6 O crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbca, featuring polyanionic ribbons composed of corner-shared triangular [ZnAs 3 ] units, running along the [100] direction. The structure of Eu 14 Zn 5 As 12 O crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2/m and its anionic substructure can be described as an infinite “ribbonlike” chain comprised of [ZnAs 3 ] trigonal-planar units, although the structural complexity here is greater and also amplified by disorder on multiple crystallographic positions. In both structures, the O 2– anion occupies an octahedral void with six neighboring Eu 2+ cations. Formal electron counting, electronic structure calculations, and transport properties reveal the charge-balanced semiconducting nature of these heteroanionic Zintl phases. High-temperature thermoelectric transport properties measurements on Eu 14 Zn 5 As 12 O reveal relatively high resistivity (ρ 500K = 8 Ω·cm) and Seebeck coefficient values (S 500K = 220 μV K –1 ), along with a low concentration and mobility of holes as the dominant charge-carriers (n 500K = 8.0 × 10 17 cm –3 , μ 500K = 6.4 cm 2 /V s). Magnetic studies indicate the presence of divalent Eu 2+ species in Eu 14 Zn 5 As 12 O and complex magnetic ordering, with two transitions observed at T 1 = 21.6 K and T 2 = 9 K.

Unprecedented lattice volume expansion on doping stereochemically active Pb 2+ into uniaxially strained structure of CaBa 1- x Pb x Zn 2 Ga 2 O 7

Lone pair cations like Pb 2+ are extensively utilized to modify and tune physical properties, such as nonlinear optical property and ferroelectricity, of some specific structures owing to their preference to adopt a local distorted coordination environment. Here we report that the incorporation of Pb 2+ into the polar “114”-type structure of CaBaZn 2 Ga 2 O 7 leads to an unexpected cell volume expansion of CaBa 1- x Pb x Zn 2 Ga 2 O 7 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1), which is a unique structural phenomenon in solid state chemistry. Structure refinements against neutron diffraction and total scattering data and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the unusual evolution of the unit cell for CaBa 1- x Pb x Zn 2 Ga 2 O 7 is due to the combination of the high stereochemical activity of Pb 2+ with the extremely strained [Zn 2 Ga 2 O 7 ] 4- framework along the c -axis. The unprecedented cell volume expansion of the CaBa 1- x Pb x Zn 2 Ga 2 O 7 solid solution in fact is a macroscopic performance of the release of uniaxial strain along c -axis when Ba 2+ is replaced with smaller Pb 2+ .

Decorin is a Zn(2+) Metalloprotein

Decorin is ubiquitously distributed in the extracellular matrix of mammals and a member of the proteoglycan family characterized by a core protein dominated by Leucine Rich Repeat motifs. We here demonstrate that decorin extracted from bovine tissues under denaturing conditions or produced in recombinant "native" form by cultured mammalian cells, has a high affinity for Zn(2+). Binding of Zn(2+) to decorin is demonstrated by Zn(2+) chelating chromatography and equilibrium dialyses. The Zn(2+) binding sites are localized to the N-terminal domain of the core protein that contains 4 Cys residues in the spacing reminiscent of a Zn finger. A recombinant 41 amino acid long peptide representing the N-terminal domain of decorin has full Zn(2+) binding activity and binds two Zn(2+) ions with an average K(D) of 3 x 10(exp -7) M. Biglycan, a proteoglycan that is structurally closely related to decorin contains a similar high affinity Zn(2+) binding segment, whereas the structurally more distantly related proteoglycans, epiphycan and osteoglycin, did not bind Zn(2+) with high affinity.

Zn 2+ -mediated catalysis for fast-charging aqueous Zn-ion batteries

Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs), renowned for their safety, high energy density and rapid charging, are prime choices for grid-scale energy storage. Historically, ion-shuttling models centring on ion-migration behaviour have dominated explanations for charge/discharge processes in aqueous batteries, like classical ion insertion/extraction and pseudocapacitance mechanisms. However, these models struggle to account for the exceptional performance of AZIBs compared to other aqueous metal-ion batteries. Here, in this study, we present a catalysis model elucidating the Zn 2+ anomaly in aqueous batteries, explaining it through the concept of adsorption in catalysis. Such behaviour can serve the charge/discharge role, predominantly dictated by solvated metal cations and cathode materials. First-principles calculations suggest optimal adsorption/desorption behaviour (water dissociation process) with the Zn 2+ -vanadium nitride (VN) combination. Experimentally, AZIBs implementing VN cathodes demonstrate fast-charging kinetics, showing a capacity of 577.1 mAh g -1 at a current density of 300,000 mA g -1 . The grasp of catalysis steps within AZIBs can drive solutions beyond state-of-the-art fast-charging batteries.

Energy coupling and stoichiometry of Zn 2+ /H + antiport by the prokaryotic cation diffusion facilitator YiiP

YiiP from Shewanella oneidensis is a prokaryotic Zn 2+ /H + antiporter that serves as a model for the Cation Diffusion Facilitator (CDF) superfamily, members of which are generally responsible for homeostasis of transition metal ions. Previous studies of YiiP as well as related CDF transporters have established a homodimeric architecture and the presence of three distinct Zn 2+ binding sites named A, B, and C. In this study, we use cryo-EM, microscale thermophoresis and molecular dynamics simulations to address the structural and functional roles of individual sites as well as the interplay between Zn 2+ binding and protonation. Structural studies indicate that site C in the cytoplasmic domain is primarily responsible for stabilizing the dimer and that site B at the cytoplasmic membrane surface controls the structural transition from an inward facing conformation to an occluded conformation. Binding data show that intramembrane site A, which is directly responsible for transport, has a dramatic pH dependence consistent with coupling to the proton motive force. A comprehensive thermodynamic model encompassing Zn 2+ binding and protonation states of individual residues indicates a transport stoichiometry of 1 Zn 2+ to 2–3 H + depending on the external pH. This stoichiometry would be favorable in a physiological context, allowing the cell to use the proton gradient as well as the membrane potential to drive the export of Zn 2+ .

Exploring the phase space of Zn 2 SbN 3 , a novel semiconducting nitride

The novel semiconductor Zn 2 SbN 3 is one of a growing list of ternary nitrides with promise for optoelectronic and energy applications. Previous work by Arca et al. [Materials Horizons, 2019, 6, 1669–1974] first reported synthesis of this material, but did not explore the effects of growth conditions on material formation. In this work, we present a semi-automated study of the relationship between growth conditions and crystallinity via high-throughput RF sputtering and a custom X-ray diffraction analysis routine. Zn 2 SbN 3 is found to crystallize in a wide range of growth conditions, and the formation of several contaminant phases is examined. Electron microscopy of these secondary phases, caused both by off-stoichiometry and by growth conditions, provides insight into the growth mechanisms of Zn 2 SbN 3 . Furthermore, computational work relates this material to other Zn-based ternary nitrides and offers an explanation for the difficulty of growing cation-ordered material despite the wide range of growth conditions explored.

Area-Scalable Zn 2 SnO 4 Electron Transport Layer for Highly Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Modules

The development of a scalable chemical bath deposition (CBD) process facilitates the realization of electron-transporting layers (ETLs) for large-area perovskite solar modules (PSMs). In this work, a method to prepare a uniform and scalable thick Zn 2 SnO 4 ETL by CBD, which yielded high-performance PSMs, is reported. This Zn 2 SnO 4 ETL exhibits excellent electrical properties and enhanced optical transmittance in the visible region. Moreover, the Zn 2 SnO 4 ETL influences the perovskite layer formation, yielding enhanced crystallinity, increased grain size, and a smoother surface, thus facilitating electron extraction and collection from the perovskite to the ETL. Zn 2 SnO 4 thereby yields PSMs with a remarkable photovoltaic performance, low hysteresis index, and high device reproducibility. The champion PSM exhibited a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 22.59%, being among the highest values published so far. In addition, the CBD Zn 2 SnO 4 -based PSMs exhibit high stability, retaining more than 88% of initial efficiency over 1000 h under continuous illumination. This demonstrates that CBD Zn 2 SnO 4 is an appropriate ETL for high-efficiency PSMs and a viable new process for their industrialization.

Reversible (De)Intercalation of Hydrated Zn 2+ in Mg 2+ -Stabilized V 2 O 5 Nanobelts with High Areal Capacity

The rechargeable aqueous zinc ion battery (ZIB) is regarded as one of the most promising candidates for large-scale energy storage applications due to its low-cost and eco-friendly properties. However, the development of a suitable cathode operating with high areal capacity and uncovering the relevant reaction mechanisms remain challenging. Herein, the application of Mg 0.26 V 2 O 5 ∙0.73H 2 O (MVO) nanobelts as a ZIB cathode is demonstrated. In situ FT-IR reveals the shift of OH stretching from 3350 cm -1 to 3200 cm -1 , corresponding to the hydration shell of Zn 2+ , while in situ Raman suggests the interlayer charges creening effect, which would boost the intercalation of hydrated Zn 2+ . Density function theory reveals that the hydrated Zn 2+ can lower the Coulombic repulsion at the electrode-electrolyte interface and circumvents the desolvation penalty of hydrated Zn 2+ during the (de)intercalation process. Additionally, excellent structure stability and large interlayer spacing guarantee the highly reversible (de)intercalation of hydrated Zn 2+ . Therefore, the MVO nanobelts exhibit a high areal capacity of 2.12 mAh cm -2 at 0.05 A g -1 , outstanding cycling stability of 2500 cycles at 10 A g -1 with a mass loading of 5 mg cm -2 . Finally, it is believed that the use of hydrated intercalation charge carriers will boost further studies in other multivalent rechargeable batteries.

Radiation-induced reaction kinetics of Zn 2+ with e S - and Cl 2 ˙ - in Molten LiCl–KCl eutectic at 400–600 °C

We report molten chloride salts are currently under consideration as combined coolant and liquid fuel for next-generation molten salt nuclear reactors. Unlike complementary light-water reactor technologies, the radiation science underpinning molten salts is in its infancy, and thus requires a fundamental mechanistic investigation to elucidate the radiation-driven chemistry within molten salt reactors. Here we present an electron pulse radiolysis kinetics study into the behaviour of the primary radiolytic species generated in molten chloride systems, i.e., the solvated electron (e S - ) and di-chlorine radical anion (Cl 2 ˙- ). We examine the reaction of e S - with Zn 2+ from 400–600 °C (E a = 30.31 ± 0.09 kJ mol -1 ), and the kinetics and decay mechanisms of Cl 2 ˙- in molten lithium chloride-potassium chloride (LiCl–KCl) eutectic. In the absence of Zn 2+ , the lifetime of e S - was found to be dictated by residual impurities in ostensibly “pure” salts, and thus the observed decay is dependent on sample history rather than being an intrinsic property of the salt. The decay of Cl 2 ˙- is complex, owing to the competition of Cl 2 ˙- disproportionation with several other chemical pathways, one of which involves reduction by radiolytically-produced Zn + species. Overall, the reported findings demonstrate the richness and complexity of chemistry involving the interactions of ionizing radiation with molten salts.

A unique class of Zn 2+ -binding serine-based PBPs underlies cephalosporin resistance and sporogenesis in Clostridioides difficile

Treatment with β-lactam antibiotics, particularly cephalosporins, is a major risk factor for Clostridioides difficile infection. These broad-spectrum antibiotics irreversibly inhibit penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are serine-based enzymes that assemble the bacterial cell wall. However, C. difficile has four different PBPs (PBP1-3 and SpoVD) with various roles in growth and spore formation, and their specific links to β-lactam resistance in this pathogen are underexplored. Here, we show that PBP2 (known to be essential for vegetative growth) is the primary bactericidal target for β-lactams in C. difficile. PBP2 is insensitive to cephalosporin inhibition, and this appears to be the main basis for cephalosporin resistance in this organism. We determine crystal structures of C. difficile PBP2, alone and in complex with β-lactams, revealing unique features including ligand-induced conformational changes and an active site Zn 2+ -binding motif that influences β-lactam binding and protein stability. The Zn 2+ -binding motif is also present in C. difficile PBP3 and SpoVD (which are known to be essential for sporulation), as well as in other bacterial taxa including species living in extreme environments and the human gut. We speculate that this thiol-containing motif and its cognate Zn 2+ might function as a redox sensor to regulate cell wall synthesis for survival in adverse or anaerobic environments.
