TES: A modular systems approach to expert system development for real-time space applications

A major goal of the Space Station era is to reduce reliance on support from ground based experts. The development of software programs using expert systems technology is one means of reaching this goal without requiring crew members to become intimately familiar with the many complex spacecraft subsystems. Development of an expert systems program requires a validation of the software with actual flight hardware. By combining accurate hardware and software modelling techniques with a modular systems approach to expert systems development, the validation of these software programs can be successfully completed with minimum risk and effort. The TIMES Expert System (TES) is an application that monitors and evaluates real time data to perform fault detection and fault isolation tasks as they would otherwise be carried out by a knowledgeable designer. The development process and primary features of TES, a modular systems approach, and the lessons learned are discussed.

Open Data, Models, and Codes for Vanadium Redox Batch Cell Systems: A Systems Approach Using Zero-Dimensional Models

Abstract In this paper, we study, analyze, and validate some important zero-dimensional physics-based models for vanadium redox batch cell (VRBC) systems and formulate an adequate physics-based model that can predict the battery performance accurately. In the model formulation process, a systems approach to multiple parameters estimation has been conducted using VRBC systems at low C-rates (~C/30). In this batch cell system, the effect of ions' crossover through the membrane is dominant, and therefore, the capacity loss phenomena can be explicitly observed. Paradoxically, this means that using the batch system might be a better approach for identifying a more suitable model describing the effect of ions transport. Next, we propose an efficient systems approach, which enables to help understand the battery performance quickly by estimating all parameters of the battery system. Finally, open source codes, executable files, and experimental data are provided to enable people's access to robust and accurate models and optimizers. In battery simulations, different models and optimizers describing the same systems produce different values of the estimated parameters. Providing an open access platform can accelerate the process to arrive at robust models and optimizers by continuous modification from the users' side.

Nonlinear systems approach to control system design

Consider some of the control system design methods for plants with nonlinear dynamics. If the nonlinearity is weak relative to the size of the operating region, then the linear methods apply directly. Fixed-gain design may be feasible even for significant nonlinearities. It may be possible to find a single gain which provides adequate control of the linear models at several perturbation points. If the nonlinearity is restricted to a sector, that fact may be used to obtain a fixed-gain controller. Otherwise, a gain may have to be associated with each perturbation point Pi. A gain schedule K(p(v)) is obtained by connecting the perturbation points by a function, say p(v), of the scheduling parameter v (i.e., speed). When the scheduling parameter must be multidimensional, this approach is difficult; the objective is to develop an easier procedure.

Predictability of weather and climate in a coupled ocean-atmosphere model: A dynamical systems approach

A dynamical systems approach is used to quantify the instantaneous and time-averaged predictability of a low-order moist general circulation model. Specifically, the effects on predictability of incorporating an active ocean circulation, implementing annual solar forcing, and asynchronously coupling the ocean and atmosphere are evaluated. The predictability and structure of the model attractors is compared using the Lyapunov exponents, the local divergence rates, and the correlation, fractal, and Lyapunov dimensions. The Lyapunov exponents measure the average rate of growth of small perturbations on an attractor, while the local divergence rates quantify phase-spatial variations of predictability. These local rates are exploited to efficiently identify and distinguish subtle differences in predictability among attractors. In addition, the predictability of monthly averaged and yearly averaged states is investigated by using attractor reconstruction techniques.

A simulator evaluation of an automatic terminal approach system

The automatic terminal approach system (ATAS) is a concept for improving the pilot/machine interface with cockpit automation. The ATAS can automatically fly a published instrument approach by using stored instrument approach data to automatically tune airplane avionics, control the airplane's autopilot, and display status information to the pilot. A piloted simulation study was conducted to determine the feasibility of an ATAS, determine pilot acceptance, and examine pilot/ATAS interaction. Seven instrument-rated pilots each flew four instrument approaches with a base-line heading select autopilot mode. The ATAS runs resulted in lower flight technical error, lower pilot workload, and fewer blunders than with the baseline autopilot. The ATAS status display enabled the pilots to maintain situational awareness during the automatic approaches. The system was well accepted by the pilots.

A Systems Approach to the Physiology of Weightlessness

A systems approach to the unraveling of the complex response pattern of the human subjected to weightlessness is presented. The major goal of this research is to obtain an understanding of the role that each of the major components of the human system plays following the transition to and from space. The cornerstone of this approach is the utilization of a variety of mathematical models in order to pose and test alternative hypotheses concerned with the adaptation process. An integrated hypothesis for the human physiological response to weightlessness is developed.

A LEAN SYSTEMS APPROACH TO IMPROVING MAINTENANCE OUTPUT AND CONFIGURATION MANAGEMENT

The purpose of this capstone paper is to apply a lean systems approach to the current maintenance planning program in the Assembly/Disassembly Organization. This capstone will take a two-pronged approach to address both output rate in maintenance planning and accurate configuration management resulting from maintenance work orders. In short, the current system suffers from waste in the planning process due lack of procedures to address varying maintenance packages, including maintenance packages which include changes to configuration managed systems. The capstone will detail a lean systems approach to proper characterization of maintenance jobs and integration of change management into the maintenance process in order to retain proper control of the systems used to produce in this nuclear facility.

A systems approach to the physiology of weightlessness

A general systems approach to conducting and analyzing research on the human adaptation to weightlessness is presented. The research is aimed at clarifying the role that each of the major components of the human system plays following the transition to and from space. The approach utilizes a variety of mathematical models in order to pose and test alternative hypotheses concerned with the adaptation process. Certain aspects of the problem of fluid and electrolyte shifts in weightlessnes are considered, and an integrated hypothesis based on numerical simulation studies and experimental data is presented.

Overview of the NASA Systems Approach to Crashworthiness Program

The NASA Aviation Safety Program was developed in response to the federal government's goal to reduce the fatal accident rate for aviation by 80% within 10 years. Accident Mitigation is a primary element of the Aviation Safety Program. The overall Accident Mitigation goal is to provide technology to the air transport industry to enable a decrease in the rate of fatalities and injury from crash loads and from in-flight and post-crash explosion and/or fire. Accident Mitigation is divided into two main elements - Fire Prevention and Systems Approach to Crashworthiness. The Systems Approach to Crashworthiness goal is to develop and promote technology that will increase the human survival rate or reduce the fatality rate in survivable accidents. The technical background and planning, selected technical activities, and summary of future efforts will be presented in this paper.
